Gotta admit. This was the best executed video I’ve seen on this T case removal. I definitely feel confident I know what to do after watching this. And I’m gonna drain my trans fluid from mine first...lol’s.
Watching transmission fluid just flow outward in an attempt to cover everything is mesmerizing. Like it's alive or something. Sorry you had that mishap. Try doing it with a TF-727 transmission from a 'Cuda and forget to drain it first. Simply astounding!
Thank you for this video. This is about the only detailed video I can find on RUclips for the np242 removal. You helped a lot. I'm going to do change the transfer case on my 95 grand Cherokee. It has an np242. And I'm installing a new np242.
I snapped a cross member bolt while taking my trans out… im watching this to see if 1. Theres a gasket between tcase and transand 2 to see if i can just put my trans in then get my tcase in
Yes it definitely does. The engine mounds in this video were extremely worn so they had virtually no resistance when this was lowered . With fresh OEM rubber mounts it probably would not tilt as much but would recover from the tilting better. I couldn't imagine Urethane or sold mounds flexing very much so its possible they could be damaged. If you are concerned about the mounts you may not want to lower your trans quite as much.
Great video Dan. I am in the process of removing the engine of the 2000 XJ. I wanna know if I can pull the engine out with hoist from front with the transmission and transfer case attached. Do I need to have to remove the transfer case or does engine bay has enough room for everything to come out? It seems transfer case is wide but not sure until I do it. Any tip appreciated. The engine hoist has a tilt for adjustable angle.
@@ProjectDanH hi Dan thanks for the response. I attempted it couple weeks ago, engine transmission and transfer case came altogether without any issue using HF engine hoist. The most important thing I did was to use engine mount to lift the engine. I bolted the chain ends to rear mount hole on each sides. These lift points gave me a perfect balance to angle the engine to pull out from the front. Make sure you use ratchet strap to tie the far end of transfer case to hoist. This is to control the angle of whole thing as you pull it out gradually. Everything came out nice a tidy with the help of two teenagers. Your videos are inspirational to many of us. You rock.
HEY!! @ 7:55, you popped off the transfer case linkage. @ 8:14...that thick metal plate (with the two access holes for the bolts) on the side of the trans...how did you get the shaft out of there where it goes into the green bushing??? Do you just pop that out with a pry bar as well? That thing won't come out on mine and it's preventing me from lowering the trans.
I have grand Cherokee 1999 trying to take out my transfer case. Took out all the bolts which connected to the transmission and now the transfer case not coming out. ( Drive shafts are removed and every thing else.) Any idea why is it stuck?
Planning on doing the same swap on my 01 XJ found a Jeep at local junkyard with an np231 case with an SYE done to it, while doing the swap is there anything special I have to do to my Jeep as far as wiring?
The great thing about transfer cases is they don't require wiring! (Just your speedo wire, but it should plug right in) However You will need the np231 shifter. They have different notches
You may need to pop it into neutral to spin the driveshaft to get to the bolts.. other than that is shouldn't matter.. make sure the vehicle is secured.. don't want it to roll over you when you pull the shaft.
You dont have to remove the trans but its too high to get to all the bolts and you need room to get to the linkages, so you need to remove the driveshafts, and just lower the trans.
The 231 removes the exact same way as the 242. The only real difference between the two sets ups in terms of parts are the notches on the shifter lever. I haven't personally removed one from a manual but I would assume the out put of the transmissions should be the same and wouldn't affect the job. Thanks for watching!
Hey man it's me again. So I got the np242 transfer case replaced. Took me a day to do it. I also did the universal joints on the front and rear drive drafts. Reconnected all the lines. And then went to bed. Didn't test or drive the Jeep since the install. Now since I change the transfer case the Jeep stalls when I come to a stop... If I put it into neutral it will usually not stall. Do you think I pulled out or damaged one of the vacuum lines? It didn't do this before. it only started this after the transfer case job
This may be unrelated, how long was it sitting? did your battery get too drained? definitely check all the vacuum lines, make sure your alternator is generating enough amps, and check the neutral safety switch.. maybe you bonked it during the swap.
@@ProjectDanH I figured out what it was I'm sorry man. I'm a dumbass. The transmission oil level was low. which makes sense because when you take the transfer case out transmission oil comes out of the spline area. It wasn't empty but it was low. I topped up the transfer case but forgot to top up the transmission. I added ATF to the transmission and everything is all good. It runs extremely smooth now
@@ProjectDanH I know right hahaha. Here I am just disconnecting vacuum lines and doing all this other shit. And all I had to do was simply check the transmission fluid hahahahahaha. Something so simple that I didn't think of right away. Oh well it's fixed now I appreciate the help. I hope your channel brings you lots of success
I’m in the middle of removing my NP242D and was curious once removing the TC from the tranny, is the ATF+4 coming from the TC or Trans? Ive searched online and even called the dealership and haven’t found anything out! My original 242 decided to grenade itself on the freeway so I’m not sure if I need to top off the transmission fluid or not.
Project Dan H nice! Im doing the sye tomorrow. I ran out of daylight today. But have the crossmember off n everything ready to rock n roll tomm morning! I hope it goes well
Project Dan H please tell me what im doing wrong. I took the linkage off just like you did. But my trans/transfer case wont drop nearly as far as yours.
Haha... I was so mad! It took me all day to clean!!! I've heard there's a significant difference in off road strength. I guess there are more parts and more of a potential to break in the 242. I don't plan on doing any hard core crawling but I have a 231 so I figured I'll give it a shot. Thanks for watching!
actually you can swap in parts/case halves from a 242HD and the 242 can be made stronger than the 231...231 has cheaper and easier options for SYE kits though
Hi Dan, Great video ! I ended up here because today I’ve seen my tcase having a leak below the gasket (its made in rtv I guess...) any chance to fix it without pulling the whole thing down ?
Thank you! Are talking about the seal between the transmission and the transfer case? if so you gotta pull it. might as well put in an SYE while your at it. lol

do you really need to drop the transmission all the way down onto your exhaust like that?

Which is better np231 or np242? Please Dan can u clear my doubts?
They say 321 is stronger off road... I like 242 on road
That's why I don't use torches. I use oil and penetrating fluid because it actually works
Hey !! when you lower the transmission the engine trims backward! It is right for the engine mounts ?? or they will crack???
Yes it definitely does. The engine mounds in this video were extremely worn so they had virtually no resistance when this was lowered . I would def recommend removing the transfer case first. The weight and bulk would make it very difficult to maneuver.

a jack and basically any metric set of sockets and wrenches
