  • We speak in depth with journalist Jonathan Eig about his new book, King: A Life, the first major biography of the civil rights leader in more than 35 years, which draws on unredacted FBI files, as well as the files of the personal aide to President Lyndon Baines Johnson, to show how Johnson and others partnered in the FBI’s surveillance of King and efforts to destroy him, led by director J. Edgar Hoover. Eig also interviewed more than 200 people, including many who knew King closely, like the singer, actor and activist Harry Belafonte. The book has also drawn attention for its revelation that King was less critical of Malcolm X than previously thought.

This interview really humanized him, & amazingly that also makes his efforts even more heroic. Coping with depression, hospitalized, targetted by foes & friends...& yet MLK Jr kept putting one foot in front of the other to clear a path every one of us can follow. Amazing human being who sacrificed everything for his vision of justice. Case in point, he didn't live to see his 40th birthday. But his work, his words & his vision will live forever.

Firstly white is snow and means the death cycle of vegetation lack of sunlight. Cancer is white, white sugar and white flour gives us diabetes. White skin burns in the sun. (I’ve never needed an ice bath from a day at the beach without sunscreen) White in an X-ray means sickness whereas black is open clear lungs, brain, heart, vasculature etc. Black is beautiful needs to be added to blacks law dictionary and blackness made legal. Lastly we were classified as slaves by the British and US governments back “when the word foundational black American didn’t exist”, and with the little freedom We have in this country telling us to fall in line with addressing a man with female pronouns or be made even more of a pariah in society, I find it highly problematic that the US government won’t recognize FBA and ADOS as a Status if we want to be addressed as such. Prove that the US government truly isn’t anti ADOS and FBA while being overtly pro everybody else with great respect to their foreign cultures. We are delineating ourselves as unique to this country being its literal foundation. I’m hoping that one day you embrace the blackness that was there with god in the beginning and he told that blackness to let the light come out. See you know the speed of light but what is the speed of darkness. Even light can’t escape a black hole! At the center of every star and galaxy are black holes that allow light to emanate from them melanin is a 18 Carbon chain molecule able to absorb light much light black holes do and have a black hue much liike charcoal. Remember the light comes from the darkness which is why the whitest man on the planet has two very dark skinned Africans as parents so please let’s not ever denigrate blackness or the word black ever again as a people on planet earth because there are black people all over this earth being colonized by white people who technically didn’t exist until the law of 1681 made it illegal for blacks and white to marry! White indentured servants and black slaves married one another before they United in rebellion for a year and the white race was created as a buffer class equipped with rights and authority over all black men and women, and for white people wishing to stay married to slaves they and their children were enslaved indefinitely! Johnson grew to resent King after his speech that opposed the Vietnam War. LBJ felt that he gave King a "victory" by signing off on Civil rights legislation and the Vietnam speech was a betrayal. For Johnson, the final straw was King's proposed Poor Peoples' March on Washington. This march was designed to mobilize poor people of all ethnicities and Johnson felt that this undermined his social policies.

It’s the target at which they aim while striving for excellence and are often disappointed by their own efforts, and the degree to which they miss the mark. LBJ should’ve known that the cure for his nightmares would’ve been to heed the admonition of the Dr. The need of mankind to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence: indeed! J Edgar Hoover represented the evil of violence, while MLK represented the goodness of peace. The fundamental changes MLK advocated were anathema to the goals of the duopoly government then; they are, and would be now. RIP Reverend Dr King. Propaganda has been the catalyst that has destroyed great organizations and individuals. As well as what could have been a poignant and profound alliances. Between two of the giant fighting for our independence, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. One can only imagine where we as a people would be today if these two great men hadn't been chopped down in their prime. It brings a tear to my eyes just imagining it. And I know that the two of them like old John Brown are a moldering in their Graves in disgust.

When “Beyond Vietnam” is read today, the failings of contemporary society in jettisoning Martin Luther King, Jr.s’ themes he highlighted in that speech are frightening. Rampant racism, gross materialism, and warmongering on scales that Dr. King probably could have imagined.
In terms of the relationship between Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, I think that this interview is a bit off the mark in downplaying Malcolm’s criticisms of the civil rights movement led by Dr. King. Looking at those criticisms today, besides the existence of a Black middle class that is larger than the Black middle class during the lives of both men, not much has changed. There are no leaders and champions of civil rights today who rise to the heroic brilliance of either man.
There are no surprises about John Kennedy's and Robert Kennedy’s antipathy toward Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement he led. Lyndon Johnson took that antipathy and raised it exponentially following the Riverside Church speech. J. Edgar Hoover was a despicable person, not much different from the extremists on the right today. Two themes that marked Hoover’s life were his hatred of those he disagreed with and his pandering to getting the “dirt" of those he opposed.
