"King: A Life": New Bio Details FBI Spying & How MLK's Criticism of Malcom X Was Fabricated

- We speak in depth with journalist Jonathan Eig about his new book, King: A Life, the first major biography of the civil rights leader in more than 35 years, which draws on unredacted FBI files, as well as the files of the personal aide to President Lyndon Baines Johnson, to show how Johnson and others partnered in the FBI’s surveillance of King and efforts to destroy him, led by director J. Edgar Hoover. Eig also interviewed more than 200 people, including many who knew King closely, like the singer, actor and activist Harry Belafonte. The book has also drawn attention for its revelation that King was less critical of Malcolm X than previously thought.

It seems like J. Edgar Hoover is one of the most evil men that ever walked the earth.
Yes, I think so too.
You can feel the Satan in him
Not Surprised.
he was truly despicable and sinful
Many more this was a systematic problem in the govt the USA govt upholds racism because it's a part of the American fabric from the beginning and needed to keep the whites unified from having a civil war. A permanent black bottom class keeps whites unified by having a permanent bottom class that they can blame for all society ills
Malcolm X is finally getting the recognition he deserves after so many years, the best part is how Black People kept his Legacy Alive if it wasn't for them he could have easily become another Forgotten Part of History swept under the rugs no joke.
What I realized is Malcom X was more dangerous to the establishment then any other black figure, his last speech the bullet or the ballot was the draw.
@@thegunner971
Believe it or not, MLK was killed because he began to move more toward separation. In a 1967 video interview, he made a very damning statement about American society and even the white Americans that famously marched with him in Selma.
@@thegunner971 Now black people have been voting for the same people since the 60s and their lives are worse in every way because of it
Brother Malcolm (R.I.P) and Brother Medger Evers (R.I.P).
Malcolm's words cant so easily be manipulated into fake agendas. The man litterally said there is no difference between democrats and Republicans. Didnt he said the black mans greatest enemy is the liberal? Hes was right af. It will always be up to black folk to keep malcolm alive. The powers that be cant let those words run rampant.
And still, Hoover is honored in this country. Also, the more I learn about Haley the more disappointed I am. I’m almost ashamed I ever respected him.
Haley lost all cool points with me, what a lying Sambo
I still like to believe that Hoover and all the devils that followed his racist deeds in this stolen land, will burn eternally. That justice continues to bring me joy.

Hoover was a total SCUMBAG. Just like the sleaze who wrote that EVIL letter.

Echos of Macarthism.
Rest in peace Dr. Martin Luther King.
Rest in peace, Malcolm X.
They were victims of their own government, like Assange and many others.
Thanks for this excellent video
Democracy Now , an independent and brave beam in the sea of corrupt news.
Don't ever compare Assange with Dr King. Assange received his information by email. Where's the fight for justice in that....
Where do you think Julian Assange is from? I'll give you 3 guesses and a hint. Hint - he isn't from the US. Assange is also a right wing head of a hacking organization who decided to politically support the same people who then turned on him. They are not the same and shame on you for even attempting to make the argument that there is some sort of equivalency.
I'm deeply saddened to hear of RFK's approval of the surveillance of King. It's a blemish on his memory and the country.
I’m not surprised at all!
I saw a documentary saying RFK allowed it because he needed Hoover to cover John Kennedys tracks for one of Jack's many affairs.
Hoover said he would do it but only if RFK allowed him to wiretap King
Never, under any circumstance, trust a Kennedy.
This whole mf a blemish. I hate when ppl pretend they live in a country of angels when me and my ppl were brought here on ships. It's not a blemish. It's the true nature and don't treat it otherwise. We tire of that.

It could be plainly stated Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were killed after they both changed and expanded their ideologies.
Yep killed by the same people who were bailing out BLM rioters three years ago. Division is always their MO and go to
(Beware using "change" so loosely, i.e. expansion = addition ≠ subtraction. THEY didn't change; their appeal to WHITE PEOPLE was beginning to change.)
Absolutely!
Especially the antiwar stance they both took.
Yep. They were killed because of their power to unite the working class against capitalism.
since they Aired out King then they need to stop playing games and Expose Hoover do all his terrible deeds to everyone.
They never Will because it Will expose the extensive level of surveillance that the Government places upon people they consider enemy combatants.
Absolutely!
How did they do that
Hoover had the dirt on the entire government and some suspicious mob stances. Can't expose him. The whole country might fall apart if all his dirt got exposed.
He will be exposed when he has to stand before the real courts of heaven.
I will admit, I've done exactly what Amy discusses at the beginning, which is put MLK Jr on such a pedestal that he doesn't get to be a human with flaws & doubts.
This interview really humanized him, & amazingly that also makes his efforts even more heroic. Coping with depression, hospitalized, targetted by foes & friends...& yet MLK Jr kept putting one foot in front of the other to clear a path every one of us can follow. Amazing human being who sacrificed everything for his vision of justice. Case in point, he didn't live to see his 40th birthday. But his work, his words & his vision will live forever.
Wonderful interview, thanks so much Amy!
DemocracyNow has been front line with telling the true story of MLK as well as Malcolm X
It’s pathetic to realize the country hasn’t changed much
Yes it is. Sad and shameful
25:48 Now that I have grown older, I realize that that both Dr. King and brother Malcolm X were modern day prophets. It's really too bad hat the powers to be of their day were too arrogant, 25:48 ignorant,😢 and power driven to to realize the messages that they were sent here to tell us. Nope. Roots was totally fake
In Roots he wrote that white people actually went into Africa and rounded up slaves. White people came to the coast to pick up slaves, they never captured us. Our own fellow Africans caught and delivered us to the ships.

King was moving in the direction of Malcolm which became obvious by his 1967 speeches
Dr King’s (R.I.P) tone after he came to Chicago because he had the opportunity to say with The Honorable Elijah Muhammad (R.I.P) but that part gets excluded.
No he wasn't
You have that backwards.
He was not. Malcolm X was moving in the direction of MLK. Martin Luther King Jr., on the other hand, began speaking against capitalism and was promoting democratic socialism, labor unions, and universal basic income for all when he was assassinated.

So grateful for your research and reports. It is important to be aware of how Power can so easily corrupt. We must watch that we ourselves do not become corrupt. Such an important responsibility.
Martin admitted he shouldve took some of Malcolm's approach. When he said he feels he led his people into a burning building he was saying that the approach he took was too soft and not and didnt worout as he thought and he wished he wouldve took more of a rebel stance with more fight.
Where did Dr King say that? His non-violent approach did work out. King's movement resulted in the Civil Rights Act.
and yet US schools are more segregated than ever before and we are still seeing a concerted effort to disenfranchize Black voters…
I disagree totally with your interpretation of the burning building statement.
Reparations! You forgot he was pushing for reparations for foundational black Americans!
The word foundational black Americans didn't exist and that word is another misnomer that is just as bad as calling yourself black smh. Some say our people will get to the point that they will stop participating in division and no longer identify themselves by a color let alone a color they are not. If anyone disagrees when you look in the mirror do you see black or do you see brown? Further black and white or those who classify themselves as that is political status.
@@iamtherealest2everdoit The fact that the word black and the word white according to blacks law dictionary from the 1600 and 1700 and 1800 and 1900; meant very racist and evil propaganda about black and blackness, yet pure holiness of its white counter part, is the main reason a distinction of our blackness and the fact that our ancestors were the first thing traded on the NYSE is necessary! Firstly white is snow and means the death cycle of vegetation lack of sunlight. Cancer is white, white sugar and white flour gives us diabetes. White skin burns in the sun. (I’ve never needed an ice bath from a day at the beach without sunscreen) White in an X-ray means sickness whereas black is open clear lungs, brain, heart, vasculature etc. Black is beautiful needs to be added to blacks law dictionary and blackness made legal. Lastly we were classified as slaves by the British and US governments back “when the word foundational black American didn’t exist”, and with the little freedom We have in this country telling us to fall in line with addressing a man with female pronouns or be made even more of a pariah in society, I find it highly problematic that the US government won’t recognize FBA and ADOS as a Status if we want to be addressed as such. Prove that the US government truly isn’t anti ADOS and FBA while being overtly pro everybody else with great respect to their foreign cultures. We are delineating ourselves as unique to this country being its literal foundation. I’m hoping that one day you embrace the blackness that was there with god in the beginning and he told that blackness to let the light come out. See you know the speed of light but what is the speed of darkness. Even light can’t escape a black hole! At the center of every star and galaxy are black holes that allow light to emanate from them melanin is a 18 Carbon chain molecule able to absorb light much light black holes do and have a black hue much liike charcoal. Remember the light comes from the darkness which is why the whitest man on the planet has two very dark skinned Africans as parents so please let’s not ever denigrate blackness or the word black ever again as a people on planet earth because there are black people all over this earth being colonized by white people who technically didn’t exist until the law of 1681 made it illegal for blacks and white to marry! White indentured servants and black slaves married one another before they United in rebellion for a year and the white race was created as a buffer class equipped with rights and authority over all black men and women, and for white people wishing to stay married to slaves they and their children were enslaved indefinitely! Before that whites were classified by the nation of birth or lineage! Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson were racist against the irish go look up the quotes! We black and we are proud!
@@iamtherealest2everdoit FBA is a term that other non FBA like because it excludes immigrant Africans. We live in a country that has disrespected us in so many ways and it’s our fault! We are behind because we don’t stick together! Segregation was not invited by us Sister Girl they created it and made us the others by controlling everything! Real where?
@@iamtherealest2everdoitlet me see what you know then…
If we aren’t FBA or black, what is our original heritage then? I’ll wait
@Chosen Sun I'm not sure if you knew we are the original native indigenous peoples of Tameri. Also known as America. Our original classification was American Indian according the our racist government. The problem is we have allowed the conquerors of these lands classify us. Then when they realized how much land we owned they misclassified us and told us we came from a land we did not. So we could not keep or reclaim our lands back.
This is all because reparations was just "too much" to give to those who built this nation.
🇺🇸is our reparation.

Johnson grew to resent King after his speech that opposed the Vietnam War. LBJ felt that he gave King a "victory" by signing off on Civil rights legislation and the Vietnam speech was a betrayal. For Johnson, the final straw was King's proposed Poor Peoples' March on Washington. This march was designed to mobilize poor people of all ethnicities and Johnson felt that this undermined his social policies.

As much as I love Alex Haley (probably b/c he wrote the autobiography of Malcolm X), he has lied so much I don’t know if I’m coming or going
Alex Haley is a complete liar (R.I.P). Roots was completely plagiarized and he was sued because of it. The Autobiography of Malcolm X contained chapters that expressed Malcolm’s (R.I.P) true thoughts towards the Honorable Elijah Muhammad (R.I.P) that were excluded after Malcolm’s death. There were at least 4 chapters that left out of the book. That were later sold at an auction of Alex Haley’s possessions.
I'm not aware of the historical inaccuracies
Alex Hailey, such a disappointment 😞
ITS NOT JUST HIM,SAYING THESE THINGS
The Reverend Dr MLK Jr was definitely a radical for his time. That’s why he was martyred! No great leader will try to achieve perfection. They know it’s a fool’s errand. It’s the target at which they aim while striving for excellence and are often disappointed by their own efforts, and the degree to which they miss the mark. LBJ should’ve known that the cure for his nightmares would’ve been to heed the admonition of the Dr. The need of mankind to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence: indeed! J Edgar Hoover represented the evil of violence, while MLK represented the goodness of peace. The fundamental changes MLK advocated were anathema to the goals of the duopoly government then; they are, and would be now. RIP Reverend Dr King. This is sooo good. Thank you...
Propaganda has been the catalyst that has destroyed great organizations and individuals. As well as what could have been a poignant and profound alliances. Between two of the giant fighting for our independence, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. One can only imagine where we as a people would be today if these two great men hadn't been chopped down in their prime. It brings a tear to my eyes just imagining it. And I know that the two of them like old John Brown are a moldering in their Graves in disgust.
When “Beyond Vietnam” is read today, the failings of contemporary society in jettisoning Martin Luther King, Jr.s’ themes he highlighted in that speech are frightening. Rampant racism, gross materialism, and warmongering on scales that Dr. King probably could have imagined.
In terms of the relationship between Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, I think that this interview is a bit off the mark in downplaying Malcolm’s criticisms of the civil rights movement led by Dr. King. Looking at those criticisms today, besides the existence of a Black middle class that is larger than the Black middle class during the lives of both men, not much has changed. There are no leaders and champions of civil rights today who rise to the heroic brilliance of either man.
There are no surprises about John Kennedy's and Robert Kennedy’s antipathy toward Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement he led. Lyndon Johnson took that antipathy and raised it exponentially following the Riverside Church speech. J. Edgar Hoover was a despicable person, not much different from the extremists on the right today. Two themes that marked Hoover’s life were his hatred of those he disagreed with and his pandering to getting the “dirt" of those he opposed.
You forgot Hoover's hatred of himself. He was also one of those DC people who only had male roommates all of his life.
@@darksaint0124 Hoover was a 360 degree nutcase and extremely dangerous top cop. Who knows what identity he really had and whether or not he had a sense of his sexuality? He didn’t like dirt. Pretty crazy stuff there. His trump card was blackmail.

This is an incorrect account of how his father died, though it is believed the KKK got his father cut in half by a train car, the KKK did harass his mother while she was pregnant with him. The lynching and murder of will brown several years before Malcolm's birth was a catalyst for his parents having g black nationalistic thought patterns and it may be what you are referring to
They've always used fear tactics and terror. Malcom's Father was a preacher as well as Martin's. So America it's time for you to ask yourself.. why do you fear & terrorize black people??? Seriously. Why?? Black people have received the most heinous treatment here for centuries, yet thru all the horrors we've never had it in our hearts to act out the evils back onto those that did such evils.
Did not know that. Wow.
@@wafflesmomforlife9215 that is not how his father died. She is probably thinking of the Omaha riot of 1919 in which will brown was accused and murdered in the same night by lynching and burning
@@wafflesmomforlife9215 I got this information out of a history book. I'd like to see the research before refuting it. The fact is, that the KKK committed such horrors with so many people, that it's altogether possible that they did it to both - the child that became Malcome X , and the child that become Will Brown.
