2008 ST1300, the smoothest bike I've ever owned in 50 years of riding.
The heat "problem"? It's hit or miss with these; as is the dreaded deadly "wobble." I live in Birmingham AL, and we're no strangers to heat and humidity; my 2008 ST has had no heat issues; it's fine. I don't baby this bike, but I'm no hooligan either; there's no high-speed wobble with mine at any speed, with or without my Givi top box.
It is a heavy bike to push around.
So don't do it. That's why there is an engine down there. Use it. It IS a very balanced machine, and above 4mph you will not notice the weight while riding it.
As you can plainly see, there are ST detractors and there are others who love the crap out of it, the st-owners forum has about 15K members internationally, so yeah... it has a following, as do many other bikes.
If there is a "perfect" bike that is all things to all riders, I've never seen it.
Despite the reviewer's silly comment about "buttons", his naked hands, and his basic unfamiliarity with this machine, he hit the high points -- comfort, adjustable windscreen, adjustable seat (unless that was a comment here), fuel range, quickness and handling.
Look at some videos of police rodeos to see how these bikes can be maneuvered in tight spaces... it's up to you to practice, and it's not hard at all. As an MSF RiderCoach, I can do the U-turn box all day long, and I'm talking the smaller box. Practice. You should do that with every bike you own.
It's not for everyone; yeah it could use cruise control (there are several aftermarket options), heated grips / seat (there are options there too), bar risers, lower footpegs, highway pegs, saddlebag protection / tipover bars, RAM mounts, etc. Any or all of these can be added.
But you will be hard-pressed to find a legitimate sport-tourer at this price point today, with this level of range and comfort.
Don't be afraid of "high-mileage" examples; this V-four engine runs and runs and runs. And runs well, and smoothly.
Look at st-owners.com which has been around since the ST1100 was introduced; there is a wealth of information there.
The MAJOR thing to be aware of with used models is when they sit for a good while, the Secondary Master Cylinder gets pissy and will likely need to be replaced; it controls the Linked Braking System and will lock up the rear wheel if neglected. All of this and more is discussed and resolved on st-owners.
It's a great bike, and one I won't likely sell.
    Ever.

First, I'm 63, 5' 8, been riding since 10 yrs old, the st is sport touring, not quite a gold wing, not quite a cbr, I own a 2010 with 8k miles, bike is plenty fast for what's it intended. Handling is very good, yea it's a big bike so common sense tells u its especially heavy with full tank of gas in tight spots, adjustable height on seat, adjustable windshield which is phenomenal, wish it had a 6 spd for highway droning, brakes are strong, large tank permits 300 mile adventures before fillip, silky smooth, shaft drive, no cruise control or heated grips, I installed Oxfords which work fine, very comfortable ride, adjustable rear suspension, locking detachable bags, lmo it's a great bike for weekend trips, daytrip, u can carve pretty well but I wouldn't, maintenance is pretty minimal and not a arm and leg, very dependable, if u like a used st bike and not a cruiser type I would go with the honda, although I still like the old concours, I just can't deal with carburetors and storage and sucky fuel, honda is the way to go for this application, hope this helps those that are on the fence choosing.

    • @woodie62
      @woodie62 4 года назад +2

That's me, one of those on-the-fencers, looking more deeply into alternatives before my final choice.
Yes, I would consider slightly older bikes (4, 5 years back but no more) as long as I can trace the maintenance records. I looked hard at the Yamaha FJRs as well as the Contours and Goldwings. I even eyed the BMW R1250 GS but the ones I'd seen up close were older than my targeted age group. They wanted a little over $5k for each of 'em. I know the best way to know for sure when a bike is right for you is to test ride. That'll be the way from now on. Thanks for the heads up on the ST's you've had!!

@@woodie62 I have a 2006 model with about 105,000 miles on it. I love it. It is comfortable, low maintenance and gets the job done. I have done 1000+ miles in a day and use it regularly for commuting. The difference? What you put in the saddle bags! I wish Honda would still make them because I would get another but I don't need too.

I realize the is an old post but heat coming off the engine can be reduced a great deal by installing the rubber trim for the fairing. It is available from Honda and yes, a little bit pricey.
It made a big difference on my 2005 ST. Best bike I ever owned. Also, if or when you replace the steering head bearings, do it with tapered bearings. Stable now at 40 mph with no hands. Enjoy until you get so old you have to get something that doesn't weigh as much.

I have over 120,000 miles on my 2003 ST1300. Replaced front wheel bearings and a few batteries and windscreens. These are really good on tire life. The adjustable screen is the best. The motor pulls way better than my 1200 Ducati Monster. Not in the same league (just 2x as heavy).
The only downside is no electronic cruise control. If you are coming off sport bikes you will drag the pegs a lot. Once I'm on it a while I don't drag them. I really needed an aftermarket seat. Butt I am heavy. Rocking a used Corbin seat. 2nd best money I ever spent.

Possibly the best bike Honda has ever made. I've had mine since 2010 and it's done more than 70000 miles - still looks fantastic, rides great, super comfortable, totally reliable. My 2005 model was so well engineered it even passes the London emission ULEZ zone - I had to get it independently certified, but it definitely qualifies. Dash and features look a bit dated now but still a fantastic ride.

There are FJRs , Connies and R1200RTs but imho ST1300 are the kings. Had two of them, first was an '06, sold that one with 72k miles on it and sold it only to get one with abs, so I found an '09 with abs and so far this one has 65k miles on it. Yes, they are heavy, need 6th gear, bluh bluh bluh but I tell you, they are fun, very, very reliable, fast and awesome bikes. I came across couple of st1300 riders while back, one with 180k and other with 280k miles and they were going to Alaska from somewhere in the Midwest I think without any worries as far as high mileage. These bikes will run 90 mph all they long, great on curvy roads, great brakes, decent gas mileage (40-45mpg), not a drop of oil loss/burn between 5k miles oil changes. Some complain they are running hot, high speed wobble etc. I've been in 100 deg weather rides and never ever noticed any issues (besides being 100 deg outside of course) and I always wear all gear, had both bikes well past 100 mph and no wobble whatsoever ( both with tour packs on them). There are so many choices out there but for me and many others, ST1300 are it.

Although this bike is real heavy with a full tank and packed bags as long as you think before you pull in somewhere as to how you are going to get out again like a semi driver does its perfectly fine. I commute every day and just love this machine. I actually enjoy going to work because of the ride.

I have a 2003 ST 1300 first year they came out with the redesign I knew the owner of the dealership he told me I had one of 500 in the United States at the time I bought it. It was an eye Turner at poker runs and guess what I didn't have to stop and get fuel every other stop like the other bikes did. The thing is awesome only have 29,000 mi on it wish I had time to ride. Five and a half gallons up top and another two and a half gallons of fuel below the seat. 125 horsepower only thing I did to mine was put handlebar risers on it. If you turn the knob on the dash it raises and lowers your headlights if you have someone on the back and the lights are too high.

I found a cheapest ST selling for 7000usd (average used price in my country is around 1000 usd converted price). A 2003 with 121k mileage on it. ST is known for a bulletproof engine and I wonder if it can survive for another 80k before major engine top build. What maintenance on the engine should be done first before enjoying the full potential of the ST and should I be worry about the reported wobble? My highway speed with Yamaha Royal star is always above 160kmh and Im planning to do more with the ST. Fall in love with the looks of it and the police and firefighter here still using it and they still even use the cbx750.

Did not like the bmw after years of a pan , too big / heavy/ silly electronic throttle / difficult to remove top box / reverse gear was useless , slightest incline and would not move, i can go on.
Service light came on ,dealer wanted £200 turn it off , nope . sell it.
Back on a ST again , it`s like back home.
It`s old school so i can fiddle with out a laptop to make things work.
As with the heat problem , my old 2002 one was red hot on my legs , this later one i have and just used in traffic is much better, did not notice it at all really, maybe they cured on later ones ?

Had a 650 V-Strom, but felt I needed a bigger bike to keep up with my buds on long (600+ mile) rides. Wife said "No" to two bikes, but couldn't wait. Rode the ST to Tail of the Dragon with said buds ... the ST ate it up, but would have been so much more fun on the V-Strom. They both do the same thing, except for premium fuel and a few MPG less on the ST. I owed $$ on the ST, the wife still wasn't comfortable with two bikes, so I prayed, "Lord, don't need two bikes, and I don't care which one goes." Two days later the ST was driving off into the sunset, making someone very happy. I would have been extremely happy with either, and ST ownership, for even a year or so, was a great blessing.

Tyre pressure has to be correct, and if tank is full it will lean over a little fast. But it is very safe very smooth and very capable. Lots of them are for sale by people who don't fully appreciate its abilities. It's cheap enough to allow you have a 2nd or 3rd bike. I'm keeping mine. You can reduce pretty much all of it by removing or reducing the weight of the payload of the top accessory box, and or cranking up the rear suspension preload.
I only notice a slight weave when l am passing a semi after leaving its slipstream until l get to some clean air. Nothing scary at all, no mater what the speed. I use my top box all the time, l just keep light stuff in it.

The good points, great weather protection, great riding position, great brakes, bad points, handling issues with the front end, easily upset on rough roads, the dreaded pan weave caused by poor design by Honda who refused to accept there was an issue which was actually caused by too much air flow over the front screen and pushing down on the rear of the bike, said to be cured many riders who refused to accept that this was the best Honda could produce as a flagship tourer...... And the solution was .....increase the air flow between the front screen and and fairing by moving the bracket's holding screen further out from the fairing, thus increasing down pressure on the front, then there's the generator alternator which go the same as the previous model st1100, try getting a used one any where scarce to say the least, ok yes I know other manufacturers have issues too but at least they updated their model's to cure and improve them like fjr1300 who started life at the same time but continued to address issues from incarnation to incarnation ,then there's the gtr1400 again does all st1300 does but better, all in all Honda missed the boat with an opportunity to improve and or replace the the model i.e their answer was vfr1200 which never hit the mark as a replacement or as a sports tourer in its own right, well that's my two cents worth as some who had experience of some of the above, I've met some happy st1300 owners down the year's who had little or non of these issues maybe you'll be one too.

    • @davidryder3374
      @davidryder3374 6 лет назад +4

You make some good points, mori mori, and a couple inaccurate ones. The original ST had a 28amp alternator, so that obviously went tits-up at the first installation of anything pulling serious current, like electric clothing. '96 models and later had a 40amp alternator, which completely cured that problem.
The dreaded "Pan Weave" was caused by insufficient weight on the front tire, aggravated by the ST13 being a shorter wheelbase than the ST11 and the use of a topbox, which caught the wind at speed. Lean backwards a bit in the cockpit and that's just enough change to the front tire contact patch friction to start the process.
You're certainly correct that the VFR12 missed the target, but I don't think that target was replacement of the ST line. Honda always made room for both a SPORT tourer and a sport TOURER in their line, until recently.
I agree about the lack of updates...Honda has always been an arrogant company, from the standpoint of saying, "Here's our best shot, live with it," rather than accepting customer input and continuously improving their models throughout their lifespan. I currently own an 2001 ST1100 and an 2013 FJR1300, and the FJR is very obviously the flagship of Yamaha's line, with every iteration showing constant improvement and tuning. If Honda had any interest in keeping the ST13 relevant, they would've eventually offered it with cruise control and heated grips, two features which are pretty much required in any touring bike today. But ST's were never major sellers...in my dealership in the 90's, we would likely sell only one ST1100 per year. And with every buyer looking to purchase ADV-style bikes now, it's not hard to see why the ST line never got any attention from the Honda beancounters.
