  • How to use Layers for lighting in digital art: In this video i talk about using layers to apply color to your shadows and highlights and how this can improve the lighting in your digital art. i took cues from movies and music videos and applied them to digital art. it is good practice to study movies to improve your art style and expand your knowledge in order to become a better artist. i shall be making more photoshop tutorials on lighting and color within the next weeks.

Quick Notes (For Myself and anyone who needs):
1:43 Base color- more of desaturated colors (middle of color wheel in photoshop)
3:31 Shadow- multiply effect, pick color on the upper part of wheel
4:06 Light- linear dodge, or color dodge, pick color on darker part of wheel
-From here he experiments with different colors for shadow and light-
10:55 Highlights -pick lighter tones (could try the marquee tool he uses) he uses soft brush for this
12:49 Bounce Light- just paints color in areas he picks for effect (uses marquee tool) w/ soft airbrush
If I messed up let me know what it is below and I'll edit it in.

I might add (in shadow)- non saturated and brighter colors on multiply; (in light ) linear dodge [or add (glow) clip studio] - Darker, saturated colors

I will append you list with other tips that i wish i had known earlier:
The lightest darks are darker than the darkest lights
Ambient occlusion will always be the darkest spots in the scene
Counterintuitively shadows should be warmer and highlights should be colder
Things get lighter greyer less contrasted and more desaturated as they go back in space
Conversely, things closer to the camera are higher contrast more vibrant color with bolder darks
Specular highlights in the immediate foreground off reflective surfaces will always be the brightest things in the scene aside from visible light sources
Things in shadow have less visual fidelity
In line drawing the boldest lines should represent the darkest shadows

Good stuff. Just a recommendation as someone who kinda uses the same method, instead of clipping masks, use a single layer for it and save selections instead in the alpha channels. It might not seem like a big deal, it certainly isn't in this case, but when you have multiple characters and whole complicated background, having clipping masks like that adds up, slows down the software, and at least I'd always be scrolling up and down trying to find the layers.
With selections you can just ctrl click with the light layer selected and paint in like it would be a clipping mask, it also helps a lot to have all the selections in a different window (channel one). Ctrl+h to hide the selection dots if you want.

Hi Mohammed! I loved the video! I just have one question... is there a reason why you aren't using adjustment layers to color the shadows and lighting? For example using a solid color adjustment layer could help you change the color of the layer without having to use the hue and saturation tool. Or when shading you could also use "x" with the adjustment layer to erase or color in more easily. I'm just wondering if there's a specific reason, I don't want to criticize your way of working because everybody has a different way to work.

Linear dodge makes the colors brighter and saturated, overlay mixes the colors a bit depending on their calues
