      When I was in grade school, I had a western style flute for band class. I didn't learn how to actually get it to make proper sound for a week because I missed the first couple of classes and the teacher refused to help catch me up. Nothing wrong with being a little slow on getting where you need to be.

      @@h3lblad3 Teacher sounds like a dick to be honest.
      I have deformed thumbs as a birth defect. One reason I care about playing the instruments I own are cause he, and a few others actually took the time to teach me ways to play with my thumbs as they are, OR even alter the instrument with makeshift grips and stuff to help me.
      Good teachers teach; great ones inspire.

      @@kennyg7071 I loved it. It's an interesting look at how the public perception of someone doesn't always match up with reality, while also being a beautifully shot, high production value drama with lots of interesting characters and fight sequences.
      However, it is made for a Chinese audience. As a Westener I found it tricky to follow in places as I didn't know all the cultural references and struggled to keep track of the fact everyone has three names. I did have to check the wiki more than once.
      It's not going to be for everyone, but it's worth giving it a go, for sure.

I have managed to get stable sound after fooling around for a bit and I'm practising Do-Re-Mi at the moment. However, the clearest sound I can get is with the sound of an Air, (Sssss). Like I either hear myself blowing the air out of my lips or I just hear the weak sound of the air going inside the tube. Do you hear the air as well? Now, I wonder if it is a my fault or the problem lay with dizi flute (worth £13). I have used tape as a membrane as suggested by you. Appreciate your help Sifu :D

    Received my dizi flute yesterday, all the way from China to Sweden. A D key. I really love this flute. I have tried to play on both my mums recorder and her western concert flute but I never liked the sound and way of playing at the recorder and didn`t liked the buttons on the concert flute. The dizi flute is just the way I want it! When I have learnt this one I may be able to start play the other flutes. I am a total beginner and your videos really help a lot. I think I've started to learn how to blow in it but still I sometimes get that hissing, whistling sound. More practice and learning the notes and I hope I can try out some beginner songs soon. I will try to search for some flute teachers too. I guess I won´t find anyone playing the dizi flute but maybe it could work as well with a teacher that learns out for concert flute?

    Very helpful. Thanks much! -- Exactly what I have 'diagnosed' from my beginner's experience: that I have to concentrate on exact direction the air goes over, and into, the hole, and that I have to apply proper breathing for keeping the sound enough long and balanced. I also noticed that If I 'consult' a mirror it is easier for me to find proper position and shape of lips. And, finding this tutorial, I am so happy that I was on the right path in learning, following my sense of how it should be. Being that I am in love with Tao, it makes me even happier. So I am subscribing, expecting even more beautiful and useful things. (The dizi I am training on I have made myself, in A, following some tutorial, and using some old walking bamboo stick. It has beautiful sound I adore, when you play correctly.)

    What does that red knot which comes with the dizi mean and how to use it? I saw one player had it attached somehow to the flute, the other had it on the wall.

    • @Chiinnature
      @Chiinnature  7 лет назад +2

      that is.. garbage lol! toss it away

    • @Elena15441
      @Elena15441 7 лет назад

      So, why famous dizi players use this "garbage". I understand that for beginners it's not convenient to have it dangling from their flute. But it shall have some meaning. Red color? Knot pattern?

    • @Chiinnature
      @Chiinnature  7 лет назад +12

      well if you are just playing dizi, then the knot is useless, it's more like a decoration. But if you look at the knot itself, it is a cultural art pattern, and usually they give you a knot that looks like a diamond shape, which it is supposed to be a pattern that symbolize 如意 (Yue Yee) meaning that things go according to what you want, in another word "good luck" becaue your things can be done ontime, done right, and just to the right spot you want it to be finished. Smooth sail! Another reason to have the knot is to balance the dizi if your dizi's weight is kinda light on the far end, so it drags that end down a bit more, making your finger less "floaty". Some beginners cannot control the "grip" well and the dizi love to tilt up when you lift up the fingers, which doesn't happen to me or other advanced players of course, and that thing can help you put weight on the end, making it more "balanced" for you. Not really something a pro player will put on their dizi most of the time. If you look at the concerts and stuff, they don't put it on, unless it is a movie, lol!

    • @Elena15441
      @Elena15441 7 лет назад +1

      Thank you! Love the meaning of the knot!

    • @Chiinnature
      @Chiinnature  7 лет назад +2

      Welcome! These patterns all have some meanings behind, and I actually have 4 books here that has all those patterns for art reference purpose, lol! Btw, a new talkshow is up, enjoy that one if you have time to kill! Nice topic inspred by another fans, purpose of life! :)

    So... I recently bought a dizi, and it sounds like a kazoo. Also, to note, when I'm playing the notes they all sound a half step lower than concert pitch (it's a bass dizi in the key of g). Just concerned and confused.

    I would play regular flute as a kid. But it's not the same.. figured is something like so. 👍

    Regarding the new "D" dizi I just purchased...I assumed the bottom note would be D and that it would play the D major scale. Instead the bottom note is A and it plays the A major scale. Why is it referred to as a D instrument?

    I bought my dizi.. to the hope of hearing some chinese beautiful sonds,. But every time i tried to blow it sounds like fuck can't change notes even i finger those holes.. then I thought there is a problem with the flute and its fake, cause i bought n Alinexpress it for $15 something, now I see similar looking flutes has a much higher price like $300 dollar.. So i became hating my flute.. Now you gave me the hope my friend lex try with your lessions.. and peace...

    embouchure/blowing correctly. I can only only get a sound when blowing more aggressively and it sort of resembles a car horn.

    I have a problem. Is there a possibility that I bought a left-handed dizi by mistake? Because when hold her like a western flute (both hands near the right shoulder) there isn't any sound, eventhough I have played western flute for 5 years. But when I turn it and put both my hands near my left shoulder, the sound come out very easily. But the posture like that is so uncomfortable and it's really hard to become used to different movements of fingers. It's like switching my hands on a flute and try to play. Or I just blow into my dizi wrongly?
