"On day one, you will sound like this.": Makes sound.
Me on day one: *crying*
I play guitar and piano.
Bought a Dizi to learn. I can't even make a tone on purpose dude XD
When I was in grade school, I had a western style flute for band class. I didn't learn how to actually get it to make proper sound for a week because I missed the first couple of classes and the teacher refused to help catch me up. Nothing wrong with being a little slow on getting where you need to be.
@@h3lblad3 Teacher sounds like a dick to be honest.
I have deformed thumbs as a birth defect. One reason I care about playing the instruments I own are cause he, and a few others actually took the time to teach me ways to play with my thumbs as they are, OR even alter the instrument with makeshift grips and stuff to help me.
Good teachers teach; great ones inspire.
I bought wei wuxian's dizi (that could make a sound) nd me now, be panicking cuz i cant make a sound...
Me too 😂😭
"...easier if you have experience with western flute..."
Me, a drum player: *chuckle* I'm in danger.
Me, a guy with a midi keyboard and a DAW 😂
Bro me too I’m a drummer
Me, not even an intermediate violinist yet: welp im ded
Me a lyrist
Me, who didn't play any instruments
when you're willing to learn so you can play Wuji, who else is obsessed with "The Untamed" :>
Guilty
Real talk is it worth watching and why?
@@kennyg7071 I loved it. It's an interesting look at how the public perception of someone doesn't always match up with reality, while also being a beautifully shot, high production value drama with lots of interesting characters and fight sequences.
However, it is made for a Chinese audience. As a Westener I found it tricky to follow in places as I didn't know all the cultural references and struggled to keep track of the fact everyone has three names. I did have to check the wiki more than once.
It's not going to be for everyone, but it's worth giving it a go, for sure.
Literally meeee.
No need to call me out like that
Here because I bought a Dizi flute after watching The Untamed and just wanted to play Wuji but I don't know where to start dfjbjerergie
Update: I gave up

Flute is actually easy..... ngl
Me :*catches a vaps and decides to buy a flute i saw on amazon thinking it would be easy speezy to play.
Me now: * has to watch a video cause no sound is coming out*
lol my story also. I didn't even know the difference between western one and chinese one. Just ordered and now have to find on youtube how to play the chinese one.
Hit the vape then play like a smoking dragon lol
True hahahaha

It's time for my lovely neighbours to hear a beautiful sound of Wu Ji... or at least my attemts to make a beautiful sound of Wu Ji
Lmao my neighbors can relate
My family is feeling this pain.
Oh my goooosh it was so hard ! at first i thought my Dizi was broken or something but after trying it for a while i got a super nice sound.
Same here!! Only... I'm juuuust now making 1 sound haha! I have a long way to go yet!
XxxBlackDiamond same!!!!!
XxxBlackDiamond me too just got mine yesterday
me too haha! with practice let's get better!
@Shadow红 Yusarin Have you gotten it yet? If not, you can do it!! :>
having the same problem on my shinobue q~q
Man... I played a flute when I was at school. Never touched it for more than 20 years. Today I've got my dizi and can't make any sound, haha. But at this age I have enough patience to learn how to play it. Thanks for the lesson!
Ksanter X do you like Coraline? Coraline is the best!!!
@@chrollium6111 she is!
How are you doing
"if you tighten up the chest you're gonna faint soon"
oh, I just thought the flute is called dizi because playing it makes me dizzy.
My biggest issue is I start unconsciously whistling when I go to figure out how to make the flute sound..
Me:starts testing around *unconsciously whistles into the flute* I'm making sound!!
Roommate: you know your whistling right?
Exactly my situation. :(
Bahahah. I kept Doing that as well.
I have tried numerous instruments, only really finding any sort of sucess in violin because I had a teacher.
But this gentleman with his super easy to understand directions helped me astronomically, and I think has been more help than literally any other source when trying to learn.
Thanks Mak Jo Si!
Me: makes awful squeaking noises
You were the one who actually explain how to play it step by step other just started playing songs
This is very difficult
Even 7 yrs old in my country can do this within 7 days

How do you keep the sound? I keep losing mine and I can’t seem to keep my long tones...Also, how does vibrato world on the dizi?
I hear it's just breath works.
i think my flute is broken lol.....

I just got a F key dizi. F from "Freaking difficult to blow" 😡
Seriously, this key thing makes it easier?
+Fellipe Muniz hahahaha! some shorter ones are harder to blow, did you use TAPE instead of membrane? makes life much easier for new blowers, / players, haha!
@@Chiinnature hey!!! A little bit too late but what kind of tape can I use? 😣
I have a f key dizi too and it sounds absolutely amazing once you get used to making the sound (this comment was 4 years ago so i'm guessing you already know😂)
@@Chiinnature PLEASE HELP why isnt my dizi making any sound when inblow?? Im ready to smash the damn thing..it shouldnt be this damn hard
.please help..How do I inorove blowing so im not just soinning my wheels..how do I focus air.like youbsay??.and why do we cover the membrane hole?? I did I'm just wondering why..will it not make a sound if you don't??
@@Chiinnature if when I blow it sounds scratchy or grainy and inconsistent does that mean there is a small hole in the membrane covering somewhere i can't see? Can i put a second ouecd of membrane over that one to compensate?
My dizi flute doesnt make that same noise. I can make a noise but it sounds really high pitch n scratchy. It sounds like a train stopping. Idk if thats normal but is it broken or did i put the membrane wrong???
membrane is wrong, try using tape first
Chiinnature thank you! Ill try and see if it works.!
Am I the only one who panicked that my instrument might be defective coz I cant even make a sound LOL
This was so great! I was making sound in minutes! Not good sound, but I'm getting there!
i just bought my dizi flute in C that cost $15. It took me 1 hourse to produce the sound after watching this video, and god damnits so hard! ahahahaha ima try learn this my self. ahahaha
Same
This guys is so cute! And he teaches well! :)
Is it really possible to learn how to play the dizi on your own via vids & books? Or to really learn, do you need a proper one to one tuition i wonder? Don't know if it's true but i heard their was a legendary dizi player who was completely self taught.
Hey it's not like middle school flutes it's pretty damn harder xD it's been about 15mins i tried it and only made a clean 3 scale note.
I think i'll come back later, hoping inll still have the muscle memory ! Can't wait to do basic songs with it xD
I'm a clarinet player and I was wondering why I got a sound so quickly, then I remembered clarinets sit next to flutes and I've spent years looking at them lol.
2:40 the fly flying around my room
I like how you teach. As for beginners like me.. I find it very usefull. Eventhough I still can't blow.. But, if I continue practice I believe I can❤
Keep it up
Pianist here.
3:25 is about all I've come out with after like 40 mins 😂
Edit: I got notes!! =D
Omg is so difficult. I almost give up plying on my flute until i saw your video. Thank you 😁
This is really helpful, thank you! I just got my first dizi two days ago, and after watching this, I actually managed to make clear sounds. I'm super happy right now. (I could make sounds before too, but not a clear note. It still sounds a bit harsh, I need to practice on adjusting the intensity of the airflow, but still, the difference is clear.)
i got my 1st dizi today... and my situation just like the description above... NO SOUND! LoL
“If you tight your chest you will faint” Me: listening to him saying that after I became conscious 😂
Is it normal to get dizzy while blowing? I have a g dizi.
My Flute doesn't sound like yours, someone if you have free flute. Please, I am willing to get it
Ok...I made a sound for a few sec. nd now I can't do it again...but im so happy atleast I get to make it sound..when i thought i can't, thank you! T^T
I was struggling so much until I found this video. I was able to make a noise, lol!
Thanks, your videos inspired me to get Dizi and learn an instrument. I much prefer deeper sound of Xiao but as I beginner, I decided to go with Dizi. I have managed to get stable sound after fooling around for a bit and I'm practising Do-Re-Mi at the moment. However, the clearest sound I can get is with the sound of an Air, (Sssss). Like I either hear myself blowing the air out of my lips or I just hear the weak sound of the air going inside the tube. Do you hear the air as well? Now, I wonder if it is a my fault or the problem lay with dizi flute (worth £13). I have used tape as a membrane as suggested by you. Appreciate your help Sifu :D
I bought dizi because i thought i can play this easily but dude im fainting
I have an F key dizi. When I blow into it with all holes open, I get A#5. Is this the correct note?
Received my dizi flute yesterday, all the way from China to Sweden. A D key. I really love this flute. I have tried to play on both my mums recorder and her western concert flute but I never liked the sound and way of playing at the recorder and didn`t liked the buttons on the concert flute. The dizi flute is just the way I want it! When I have learnt this one I may be able to start play the other flutes. I am a total beginner and your videos really help a lot. I think I've started to learn how to blow in it but still I sometimes get that hissing, whistling sound. More practice and learning the notes and I hope I can try out some beginner songs soon. I will try to search for some flute teachers too. I guess I won´t find anyone playing the dizi flute but maybe it could work as well with a teacher that learns out for concert flute?
So I finally go it to make a sound, I coughed and forgot wtf I was doing :)
THAT JUST HAPPENED TO ME RN 💔
Hahaha because og untamed i bought one hahahqh
Very helpful. Thanks much! -- Exactly what I have 'diagnosed' from my beginner's experience: that I have to concentrate on exact direction the air goes over, and into, the hole, and that I have to apply proper breathing for keeping the sound enough long and balanced. I also noticed that If I 'consult' a mirror it is easier for me to find proper position and shape of lips. And, finding this tutorial, I am so happy that I was on the right path in learning, following my sense of how it should be. Being that I am in love with Tao, it makes me even happier. So I am subscribing, expecting even more beautiful and useful things. (The dizi I am training on I have made myself, in A, following some tutorial, and using some old walking bamboo stick. It has beautiful sound I adore, when you play correctly.)
are there any Dizi flutes you recommend for beginners that I can purchase online? There are so many options so I'm not sure where to start off. Thank you !! :)
Wondering the same thing.
He has another video about choosing your dizi. Basically for beginners, he suggest getting an inexpensive one you can easily get on line from Amazon. The one he is using here looks like one from Amazon. Good luck !
Your videos are the best !!! Very clear explanations and you cover details others don't mention. Thank you very much !!!
“If you tighten up your chest you’re going to faint soon, ok?”
This tickled me so much
So I'm cosplaying wei wuxian at my next convention and I have the dizi and have 40 days to learn their song...oh boy
Lol good luck
i followed your instructions but i still struggle to produce a sound
1 hour later, i realized that blowing into the dizi is pretty much like whistling into the dizi... i guess i just need to keep at it
3:25 is absolutely me
This has been Thee most helpful video I have found so far .
I still can’t get a sound out of my brand new absolutely beautiful bamboo Walking Stick Flute - but I’ll get there .
I thought it was broken but I DiD get a sound once or twice .
So I Know it definitely works !
Hoping to be able to sit around a camp fire this summer and play a few flute tunes instead of playing guitar .
I want to surprise everyone!!
Haha
I will use my waking stick all day long and I won’t say a word about it being a flute .
Just want to surprise everyone and I will work at getting this right .
Not easy at all !!
Thanks again brother 🙏
I'm having a hard hitting the hole. And it's exactly what I've been troubling like 3:07 :/ It's difficult
Same dude 😭😭😭
After hours of frustration and blowing into it like a bagpipe it just clicked and I could play the dizi effortlessly....for 20 minutes before it unclicked :(
Same. I dunno what happened. I instantly got it. And was playing for about half and hour. Took a break, and came back like 40 mins later-- and was back to square one. 😂
I have a western flute background so it is easier for me to learn dizi ?
Yes, he says it in the beginning of the video
I'm crying rn I just started and it won't let me make a sound
Same here! I'm literally crying. it's so annoying I can't make a sound ༼;´༎ຶ ༎ຶ༽
ahhhh this is so difficult 😭😭😭
i swear it’s been hours and i still can’t do it i just keep whistling accidentally😓😓😓
What does that red knot which comes with the dizi mean and how to use it? I saw one player had it attached somehow to the flute, the other had it on the wall.
that is.. garbage lol! toss it away
So, why famous dizi players use this "garbage". I understand that for beginners it's not convenient to have it dangling from their flute. But it shall have some meaning. Red color? Knot pattern?
well if you are just playing dizi, then the knot is useless, it's more like a decoration. But if you look at the knot itself, it is a cultural art pattern, and usually they give you a knot that looks like a diamond shape, which it is supposed to be a pattern that symbolize 如意 (Yue Yee) meaning that things go according to what you want, in another word "good luck" becaue your things can be done ontime, done right, and just to the right spot you want it to be finished. Smooth sail! Another reason to have the knot is to balance the dizi if your dizi's weight is kinda light on the far end, so it drags that end down a bit more, making your finger less "floaty". Some beginners cannot control the "grip" well and the dizi love to tilt up when you lift up the fingers, which doesn't happen to me or other advanced players of course, and that thing can help you put weight on the end, making it more "balanced" for you. Not really something a pro player will put on their dizi most of the time. If you look at the concerts and stuff, they don't put it on, unless it is a movie, lol!
Thank you! Love the meaning of the knot!
Welcome! These patterns all have some meanings behind, and I actually have 4 books here that has all those patterns for art reference purpose, lol! Btw, a new talkshow is up, enjoy that one if you have time to kill! Nice topic inspred by another fans, purpose of life! :)
So... I recently bought a dizi, and it sounds like a kazoo. Also, to note, when I'm playing the notes they all sound a half step lower than concert pitch (it's a bass dizi in the key of g). Just concerned and confused.
I heard that D key is best for beginners :)
I heard that D key is best for beginners :)
God, I'm not getting a nice sound at all.... without any fingers, it's such a high pitched sound my ears hurt. Is this just me being bad or have I put on the membrane wrong...?
At least you’re getting a sound my guy, all I can do is blow air
same!! did u do it? since ur comment is from 10 months ago😭
Funny thing is..once you realize your finger is whistling, I guess that means you got it right 😅. Not sure why but mine did. 🤦♀️
I removed, it stopped..put back..whistling again .
Thanks for the advice.
I would play regular flute as a kid. But it's not the same.. figured is something like so. 👍
When you realise you've been blowing in tHe WRONG DAMN HOLE
@Spiritual White I got a 2 piece, bamboo one off of ebay, like aagess ago. In key of C, it was pretty cheap so the notes are ever so slightly flat.
Wait no not ebay, amazon sorry
my dizi wont even whistle it just blows air out, there's no cracks and tape over the membrane but no sound at all
not me watching this bcz im planning to buy a dizi after watching the untamed 😭🖐️
literally same 😭
I did the same NANAKABAN SHABAJAJABA
Regarding the new "D" dizi I just purchased...I assumed the bottom note would be D and that it would play the D major scale. Instead the bottom note is A and it plays the A major scale. Why is it referred to as a D instrument?
I bought my dizi.. to the hope of hearing some chinese beautiful sonds,. But every time i tried to blow it sounds like fuck can't change notes even i finger those holes.. then I thought there is a problem with the flute and its fake, cause i bought n Alinexpress it for $15 something, now I see similar looking flutes has a much higher price like $300 dollar.. So i became hating my flute.. Now you gave me the hope my friend lex try with your lessions.. and peace...
You are an awesome teacher, I have tried a number of times on a western flute and didn't manage a note. I got a note with the dizi second time with your kissing tip. 🙂. So grateful, thank you. Have a good and peaceful day 💚🙏
So it took me 3 hours but I figured out it’s easier for me if I really face towards the end of it just barely touching it (I also accidentally taught myself how to whistle)
@Chiinnature Hi, i got my dizi on yesterday and try to make a sound 2 hours later i made my first sound. Your video is a great help thank you! 😊

Very good
God my dizi finally makes a clear sound !! Anymore screeching and ill definitely get disown by my parents and neighbors !! Well i cant help it its just too peaceful at night so ...gotta do a wei wuxian 🤭. Thank you very much for the lessons i really appreciate it .

you are so positive! Thanks, and nice video too
my dizi has a reed-like mouth piece, when i blow it, it sounds like a goose. or a saxophone. its meant to be in G but maybe its not the right kind
Did you get a Bawu or a Hulusi? www.easonmusicstore.com/categories/Bawu/24
Excellent! And thank you for sharing this video, my G flute just arrived this morning and thanks to you I can play 1st note now not too bad 😁😊
I am gonna buy one of those flutes full of buttons. I don't think my bamboo flute makes sounds, I end up whistling in it xD
For some reason I cant produce sound if my finger is covering the last hole (with all of the others covering as well) but if I take that one off then I can. Is there a problem or am I just doing something wrong?
LMAO I got a damn headache. I got some sound out, but I'ma try again later before I pass out.
I can't even make a sound 😂😂😢. I wanna cry lol. I actually put the membrane in the wrong way😂😂😂.
Appreciate the video, decided to order and mess around with a dizi since I'm kind of fond of the sound of the bamboo flute. Been playing around with it for about a a week and trying work on my
embouchure/blowing correctly. I can only only get a sound when blowing more aggressively and it sort of resembles a car horn.
I found an old flut similar to this at home. Im trying to make a sound, never being able to play a flute before, and this tutorial is very helpful to get started,. I hope i can have the patience
I just got my first key dizi. this is very helpful! thank you so much!
I find it's easier to make a sound when I clear the spit from the mouthpiece. After trying to make a sound after a solid hour, the blowhole gets very wet. Sounds grody, but true.
im glad I found this video. There are many songs I want to learn. Oh By the way, nice weaponry!
I just got my Dizi from Amazon today. If it wasn't for your videos, I wouldn't have been able to make a sound out of it. 😀
Same but I keep whistling
Too much punny jokes lololol. 5*.
Gosh! I didn't do it on purpose!
My dizi just just sounds like strong hair being blown inside of an empty tree lmfao
I have a problem. Is there a possibility that I bought a left-handed dizi by mistake? Because when hold her like a western flute (both hands near the right shoulder) there isn't any sound, eventhough I have played western flute for 5 years. But when I turn it and put both my hands near my left shoulder, the sound come out very easily. But the posture like that is so uncomfortable and it's really hard to become used to different movements of fingers. It's like switching my hands on a flute and try to play. Or I just blow into my dizi wrongly?
1:43 "Do not tighten up the chest. Otherwise you're gonna faint soon".
Someone should've told me about this before.
Well. I can play recorders and Irish whistles, but make some sound on THIS is black magic for me... :-)
I’m pretty sure this is a dumb question, but I ordered mine and it came with a crack all the way through 4 holes.... it’s not gonna work right? 💀😭 I’m returning it either way but I’d still like to know
hey i just bought a wei wuxiana flute and i think it's fake because it totally doesn't sound like dizi do i just think it's fake or am i doing something wrong?
I'm thinking of buying a Dizi, I used to play the clarinet. Is the clarinet similar to the flute?
I bought a bamboo flute because of untamed and I really love to learned.... But I can't create a sound 😭 😭 😭 😭
I'm not familier with ABCD key. I once learnt of Do Re Mi Fa.
But now I foget how to play low note .. can you guide me how to play?
