Hey, just wanted to say a massive thanks for your awesome videos! I am learning Dizi as a complete beginner to Chinese instruments (I'm an english classical oboist) and your videos have helped me to understand more of the ethos and thinking in playing. For the first time I've not even though about sheet music and analysis and let the music itself lead me.
Honey Bee Thanks for the comment! Yes there, let the music lead you and go auto-mode to unleash the music talent. Don't let yourself be limited by the stupid paper! LOL!
I feel you - I once got a dizi as a child, by some traveling friend of my dad's. Sadly, he only left it for me and we didn't know to cover the hole so assumed it was only a toy that didn't really work....
I caught on quite quickly! In just three hours I went from not knowing how to blow to being here already! ^^ I can now play the 7 keys! This is my first instrument, Is an F Dizi okay? (It's the one I've been using!)
I got my Dizi on Wednesday and love your videos. Though I feel it’s easier to play with the eyes closed to feel the sound and where I‘m blowing wrong. I had years of recorder experience, but never thought it would be this hard, especially with the Chinese notation system. Got a C key flute and love the deep sound in the lower notes. None of my neighbors tried to kill me yet, so I think the lessons help. :D Funnily you can get a very Irish sound out of those Dizis, since I still know some reels from my recorder and whistle days (an it’s hard to find simple Chinese music for Dizi that has no bass clef included).
Wow this was really helpful ,I bought a DIZI from Amazon the key of D And I'm trying to learn how to play it. Your video is really helpful Because I've been trying to learn all the Octives ,all the sounds. I think I'm gonna learn in no time. THANK YOU!
Chiinature, could you make a video on how to make higher notes, or even the highest not the easy ones but the advanced ones. Some of us have mastered the basic skills already, so we need some more introductions. Could you do that for us please?
Hello!. Your video helped me alot regarding dizi for a beginner like me.... Hope you have a F key music lesson too. Since I've got my F key yesterday. Waiting for more. Thank you 😊
great!!wish you good luck with your dizi! Use TAPE for the membrane hole, never fuck around membranes at the beginning, they bring you nothing but problems at first!
+Chiinnature So true. I was gifted a Dizi in C and took so much time putting the dimo, but when I saw your video, I took it off and put tape and it was so much easier!!! I am considering getting another Dizi or even a xiao to start easier with. I think you said a C is not easy. What key is easier? Thank you so much !!!!! Xie xie
Hello, I just got a Dizi in C key. Your videos have been a great help to me. My only problem is getting my fingers to sit right on the keys comfortably. It almost seems like my figures are too short. How do I place my hands so my fingers fit over the holes? Thanks.
you shouldnt get the C key dizi for the first one. It's really low so the hand patterns are really hard to masterize, and it requires better air fluid to make a sound
Also just started on learning to play the dizi, and same as you i got the c key dizi first hahaha and yeah it’s quite hard, should’ve bought the f key first haha
I know your comment was from a year ago-I’m not sure if you figured it out yet or if you still even play the dizi-but you have to blow softer, I find, to get the lower notes. Find the “sweet spot” in/on the blow hole and blow softer. The harder you blow, the higher the sound you’ll get. What I would do is make a sound from the blow hole, no fingers, hold the position, then cover each hole one by one, to see if I can get a sound out of each of them. Remember to blow softer for the bottom three holes.
@@sariasmith9126 I know this comment is years old but thank you! I just kept on going for it and after reading this and considering your tips I got my first low note.
Great stuff! Is it possible to get the music sheet for the first song you play? I want to have something to practice with and having you as a guideline :) By the way, I have a G dizi, that shouldn't be so different, right?
I love your lessons but I can't figure out how to place my fingers. I can play notes where only a couple holes are covered but when I try to cover all holes the sound comes out high. I don't know how hard to press or what part of the finger tip or top to use, help
Great lessons !! I’m a Canadian and I’ve never heard of this flute before, I was trying to get a Japanese flute when I stubbed across this one exactly and I started watching your videos to learn and I’m still having issues after a week of having the flute. Are there any breathing techniques I can learn? My neck keeps tensing up after about three minutes of trying to play but you have to know that I smoke.
smoking should not stop you from playing dizi, its mostly the method not right. Did you tape the membrane hole up before blowing? Use some clear tape on it and cover that membrane whole or else it won't make a sound.
Can you offer any advice on someone like myself who has found a xindi flute in their house, how can I learn to play them? There are things for Dizi but this is 11 holes so not sure where to find the skills

Thank you for these brilliant videos - they're really helpful! Do you have any advice for playing the last note (the lowest one?) for a beginner? I always get stuck on that one, but it may just be a practice thing.
are you using tape or membrane? for the low note, you try to think about your belly lowest point and "flatten" out your air stream more, make it not "blowng" but more like just releasing air, slow and "weaker" stream of air will do the job. If you are using tape, it can be because the tape is too thick too.
+Chiinnature Thanks, your advice has helped a lot. I'm using normal clear tape, but if I continue to get any problems I'll look into getting better tape and I'll keep up the practice. Thanks again :)

When playing the lower notes, are there limitations with regards to playing notes out of key? When I play in the register higher than the lowest register there doesn't seem to be much of a problem, but when I get to the very low notes, it seems like if I do manage to play the note by partially covering the hole, it doesn't sound out very well. Is it just that there is a certain technique to partially covering the holes that I am not realizing, maybe also where I need to focus on my breathing and/or other aspects of technique, is this an inherent limitation of the dizi itself, or is it simply that I have a cheap dizi and I should not expect much from it? Thank you.
+1337M37ALH3AD you should be able to play it, and covering the holes is always fully covered, not partially covered. Cheap dizi? I have a 5 dollar dizi and it plays fine too. It could be the techniques of blowing because when you play the higher notes you will blow hard and when you play the lower notes, you might be blowing too hard or the airflow is too "narrow" and cause the trouble in making that sound. Try to make the airflow more spread out or wider and don't blow so hard, see if you can get it

do u mean the tape is the one we use normal stationary tape ? actually what is the function of the hole. can i have your contact?such as email or fb :) i hv alot to ask
the hole's purpose is to vibrate something and create the sound. without covering it up with "something", nothing is there for the air to vibrate on and the sound will not come out. You can have that hole taped with normal tape or use the membrane with the herb-glue. You can reach me by makjosi@chiinnature.com
Hi i love your videos! i have a dizi from Hong Kong (like 6 years ago) and i live in australia. I've been trying to find a case for mine on ebay and i can't find any that are of reasonable price. do you know any links?
duongooo There are a few reasons. 1. You don't know how to blow into the hole properly yet. 2. You didn't close the holes properly with your fingers. The pressure should be balanced with other fingers in unison. Neither too hard or too soft. Also, your don't have to use your fingertips to close the holes. Use any part of your fingers however you like and as long it does give you comfort.
If you are able to produce clear sound for the first 3 and not the rest, the reason is not holding the flute straight and in the proper position. It happened with me too , I was casually holding it while relaxing on bed. Stupid me. I received my Dizi yesterday. Pretty excited to learn it. I wish if i could find some online classes.
I think the above replies are correct but also check your airflow. There was something about the way I positioned my mouth and slowed down the airflow that finally allowed me to hit those notes.
I remember you replying to a comment in one of your videos saying that redmusicshop was a good place to buy a xiao. Does this also apply to the dizi? Thanks :D
I bought a dizi recently and used tape as a substitute for the dimo. However, when I try playing, all the notes sound the same, no matter which holes are open or closed! Do you think it's because something is wrong with my technique?
Maybe it's because I have no idea about air speed or anything like that, but for whatever reason, I can only seem to get the notes that are in the key of whatever dizi I'm playing (I have a C key and a G key). No high notes or low notes, just whatever key the dizi is in. I'm mainly focusing on stuff from soundtracks (and whatever I feel like making up at the time, but that doesn't happen much). I've been trying to play by ear (more or less), and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong if I'm unable to get the lower or higher notes. I'd really appreciate some help. Thanks!
SpongeX129 there is a huge difference. Western flutes aren't made of bamboo and they have a lot more holes and things. Dizis have a much simpler structure.
hey man Jo so,just thought I'd share a screw up that actually isn't too too bad,I was cleaning my dizi and somehow the cork managed to pop right out,but for some reason it still works rather well, just a different tune, don't know if you ever wanna try this on a cheap dizi be my guest and make a video on it
tell me about it,I had no clue what the heck it was so I took almost an hour to get it out thinking it wasn't support to be in there, now I don't know how to get it back in
chopstick thrower Well your flute is busted, LOL! It's supposed to be there so your dizi can have the right tune. Without the proper hands, you can't fix it back the right place because it is supposed to be fixed FIRST, then drill the holes and tune the holes for the correct sound. Now you have the plug out, then it means the plug is bad, you can't use that anymore. Best bet is get a wine cork plug and resize it to fit and plug it back in, hot glue or something it down, and then see if the pitch is right. Test one note (with 3 fingers down) and see if you get the note, then let the glue set and it should work.
much appreciated my friend, but just out of curiosity where should the cork be placed,i pushed it out without realizing where it was placed in the first place
Ok basically, you don’t exactly hear the notes. If you don’t know the ABCD notes then you have no chance of learning anything. You need to know your scales and then you can use jinpu and use numbers. Speaking of listening, learn to get the perfect pitch. It’s really important to.
sifu , i managed to get a stable sound from dizi but when i try to play the random combination of notes you play in this video, i go out of breath quickly and cannot finish the song.i dont know if im blowing so hard but what do you think is my problem ?
K Selim blowing the dizi, you should be doing it without using the chest muscles too much. Try to expand your tummy while blowing, softly, and blow with less air. You will improve over time for sure, don't rush yourself! :)
Thanks that was fast. Sifu, how can we get over anxiety during any type of conflict in streets. Even though i got bunch of experience about fighting and martial arts, i cannot seem to relax totally since i think like anything can happen anytime.Even againts a bully that is weaker than me i get anxious which is not so much of a problem but its not a good thing anyways. It came up to my mind while i was watching your self defence videos. Im so lucky that i found such a channel. Thanks.
K Selim Anxiety can be happening because of a lot of reasons. From your description, seems like you have soul fragments damaged in the past and not healed up yet, so the scary feeling comes very easily, and you are kinda "fragile" in that perspective. Best way to do is have us do soul-retrieve magic for you to fix the problem up. You can email me and we can talk about that if you like. (makjosi@chiinnature.com)
May I have a question? What kind of Dizi is easiest to play? I heard something about F, but I really want to buy D or C one. Never played flute before. Piano man here :)
all dizi is about the same, but it depends on your hand size, check this vid out on my other channel, new dizi vids coming up there! :) Get some insights form this vid and it should help! ruclips.net/video/Piv23CHk4YA/видео.html
Yes but you need different dizi in different keys to play it all, but then it's not that hard, also, dizi have more notes than shakuhachi, it's not so bad.
I ordered a d key dizi, but I only plan on practicing in low notes, in my opinion, high notes just aren't pleasant on the ears, nor very harmonizing at all.
I am confused...is there a variation of number notation and fingering of dizi? The one I came across in fingering chart for D key All holes covered 5 then 6,7,1,2,3,4 . For 4 is last 2 holes of the first 3holes covered. I see different key dizi has slightly different fingering chart. Any one can sort out my confusion?
Yare Yare try one of the first videos of this series to see how to blow correctly. And remember the hole after the blowing hole has to be either taped (normal office tape) or covered with the membrane (as a beginner myself I find the tape way easier). Everything else is just practice and you will have better or worse days. Love your avatar btw. :D you can also check flautist training because the basic blowing technique is nearly the same. I find it easier to start with short notes along the whole 7 note scale and get to the longer ones after I got the feel for each note, but that is a personal thing of mine, probably because I have recorder knowledge and that is how I started recorder practice.
@@Joraya. thx for help :D actually i figured out that i wasnt covering the 6th hole correctly and it was the only reson that it couldnt make sound OwO anyways u know mo dao zu shi?

hi sifu, what's the name of the 2 melodies you're playing, they sound amazing!
republic0316 No name, play the dizi as the music flows in, improvise!
do u mean the tape is the one we use normal stationary tape ? actually what is the function of the hole. can i have your contact?such as email or fb :) i hv alot to ask
the hole's purpose is to vibrate something and create the sound. without covering it up with "something", nothing is there for the air to vibrate on and the sound will not come out. You can have that hole taped with normal tape or use the membrane with the herb-glue. You can reach me by makjosi@chiinnature.com
Hi i love your videos! i have a dizi from Hong Kong (like 6 years ago) and i live in australia. I've been trying to find a case for mine on ebay and i can't find any that are of reasonable price. do you know any links?
s31ispudi7is just get some fabric and make a tube pouch for it, easy job done. No need to put them in a case, it's better without.
ok thanks!
I have a key of C dizi and I can only play 3 sounds. I cant reach the lower notes
same im trying to hit the lower notes but it just sounds airy
same!! do y’all know why that is? or anyone?
duongooo There are a few reasons.
Thanks :D
i guess so, have heard good stuff about it before
Alright, thank you so much
I need a lesson whit the key E for play the high notes good
how would you recommend a pattern to making up a melody
I bought a dizi recently and used tape as a substitute for the dimo. However, when I try playing, all the notes sound the same, no matter which holes are open or closed! Do you think it's because something is wrong with my technique?
tape air leakage or blow angle issue.
Sounds like standard key under the E key
Maybe it's because I have no idea about air speed or anything like that, but for whatever reason, I can only seem to get the notes that are in the key of whatever dizi I'm playing (I have a C key and a G key). No high notes or low notes, just whatever key the dizi is in.
I'm mainly focusing on stuff from soundtracks (and whatever I feel like making up at the time, but that doesn't happen much). I've been trying to play by ear (more or less), and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong if I'm unable to get the lower or higher notes. I'd really appreciate some help. Thanks!
kanna Maybe make a video of yourself playing ?
Can I email it to you?
kanna
a video? youtube pls, too big for email
Are chines and western flutes the same or different?
SpongeX129 there is a huge difference. Western flutes aren't made of bamboo and they have a lot more holes and things. Dizis have a much simpler structure.
How do I blow the open note in low octave? Any tips?
hey man Jo so,just thought I'd share a screw up that actually isn't too too bad,I was cleaning my dizi and somehow the cork managed to pop right out,but for some reason it still works rather well, just a different tune, don't know if you ever wanna try this on a cheap dizi be my guest and make a video on it
*Mak Jo Si
chopstick thrower I have tried washing my dizi and the plug won't come out.. lol...
tell me about it,I had no clue what the heck it was so I took almost an hour to get it out thinking it wasn't support to be in there, now I don't know how to get it back in
chopstick thrower Well your flute is busted, LOL!
Thanks for these lessons but I have a problem. I get really light headed when I play it am I doing it wrong
blowing way too hard!
I feel like i'm blowing to hard, but when I blow softer my dizi does not make any sound. I have bass a key
Do you have the music score for melodies that you just played? :O
nope, play by the ear and mind, easy, that's how dizi should be learned too
Ok basically, you don’t exactly hear the notes.
(makjosi@chiinnature.com)
how should I start for the first time
omg its so hard to even make any sound let alone the different notes.
lol!! did you tape the dizi membrane hole?
May I have a question? What kind of Dizi is easiest to play? I heard something about F, but I really want to buy D or C one. Never played flute before. Piano man here :)
all dizi is about the same, but it depends on your hand size, check this vid out on my other channel, new dizi vids coming up there! :) Get some insights form this vid and it should help! ruclips.net/video/Piv23CHk4YA/видео.html
+Chiinnature Thanks, master. Thank you for the quick response. I hope I'll learn quickly from your lessons and lets tune some Naruto songs :)
+Chiinnature and one more question. Can dizi flute play all the tones? Because the china music is known for pentatonic scales...
Yes but you need different dizi in different keys to play it all, but then it's not that hard, also, dizi have more notes than shakuhachi, it's not so bad.
Wait where do I put the tape?
Hihi ! Are we supposed to hang anything on the dizi?
no need for beginner
When I play it makes good sound but it’s airy
is g key good for this stuff?
I dont get the breathing techique
more practice.listen more
When I cover all the holes, and try to reach the lowest notes, I get a very high pitched sound instead.
I managed to make a decent sound when the 4th hole is covered too, but I just can't make a sound when all of them is covered.
air leakage or not relax breathe/slower air flow
I ordered a d key dizi, but I only plan on practicing in low notes, in my opinion, high notes just aren't pleasant on the ears, nor very harmonizing at all.
Bro, where am i supposed to put the tape?
the hole next to the blow hole
we all where used to play with flute when i was in school. Yamaha flute to be more accurate hahahaha
Hahahaha I know how to play the western flute, recorder, clarinet, saxphone and almost everything except for the horns and trumpet style stuff! :)
and i can simulate a drum with my finger and a table......................NOT!!!
lol
deathangellink LOL! You saw my drumming video? Chinese Drum 101 for Everyone by Mak Jo Si, With Nice Drum Solo Music!
I cant cover 6 holes cuz theres no sound coming wtf my flute
Yare Yare try one of the first videos of this series to see how to blow correctly. And remember the hole after the blowing hole has to be either taped (normal office tape) or covered with the membrane (as a beginner myself I find the tape way easier). Everything else is just practice and you will have better or worse days. Love your avatar btw. :D
you can also check flautist training because the basic blowing technique is nearly the same.
Nice video, but it's difficult to get a good note. You speak cantonese or just chinese ?
I speak cantonese, and english
Chiinnature oh cool, i speak cantonese too, but from france, do you have time to give me some tips on my Dizi flute ? :)
Nicolas huynh
cool~ what tips you want to know about?
Lowest note doesnt play for me at all O.O
relax breathe. air flow slow.
:D
Thanks for watching man~
