The Rise & Fall of Valve

- Valve used to be the 'Good Guy' of game developers. From their outstanding hits in Half-Life, Team Fortress 2, Portal, Left 4 Dead and so on, they have dominated the PC market and revolutionized gaming. But somewhere along the way they had a fall from grace. They stopped selling games and started selling hats. Gambling, lawsuits, illegal activities, after 2011 Valve was getting involved in all kinds of shady stuff.
And it's time I filled you in on the Rise and Fall of Valve.

Valve is a company of two extremes. They are both the 'Good Guys' and the 'Greedy Corpos.'
I both respect and admire Valve in the past, but I find their current business practices despicable.
Despite all the Anti-Consumer things Valve has done, Half Life: Alyx is a great sign, because Valve actively made a game they knew wouldn't make shit loads of money. It was the first game made with passion as the focus instead of making shit loads of money. So for that, I think Valve is on the right track.

I will forever love valve for TF2, that's what started PC Gaming for me.
As long as Steam works and gives me an all-in-one storefront and archive for my PC games, all the stuff involving the games they actually make, I couldn't care less about.
Although when I say "works", I use that term kinda loosely. I've gone onto the Steam store actively looking to buy a game and come up empty because their storefront is such a massive clusterfuck. And their algorithms, which have on occasionally found for me absolute hidden gems, still haven't learned in 13 years that 'recommended for you because it's popular' has never, not once, resulted in a sale. It's just clogged up my shopping experience like an annoying salesman in a store.
Same for me but I gotta side eye valve for being a missing grandfather of gaming unless they're dead.
Same
First thing I ever registered on Steam, I couldn't even tell you how many I have now
You should love the people who created Team Fortress 2, not the greedy company that is destroying it
All I know is Left4dead 1 and 2 still play like new games for me. All these years later and they still amaze me with how great they are. So much fun too!
Constantly play each campaign all over again & enjoy it so much. Then replay them again.

Fucking shame.
I liked the bit about VALVE absolutely shaking the foundation of everything they get their hands on, Half Life Alyx made VR not a boring BeatSaber only machine

@@VitZ9 beatsaber doesn’t have an ending, half life alyx does
@@test_account939 It's still been largely forgotten. There are games with endings that are still being uploaded.
Important correction: Counterstrike wasn't made by Valve. It was a mod for Half-Life that Valve bought from the creators. It's also funny that Blizzard missed the opportunity to do the same with Dota, and Valve bought that too. So, an eye for good shit is also a part of Valve's arsenal.
Most of Valve games are from a mod
Dota 2 = warcraft frozen throne mod
Tf2 = Quake mod
CS = Half Life mod
I'm waiting for Dota world RPG they could do it, there are a lot of Dota 2 mod with good RPG elements and with the fall of DIABLO and other ARPG they could make more billions if they do that.
@@invoker6219 That's probably why they always encourage community support. I imagine Gabe knew he could use the consumer as an idea machine and capitalize on it while looking like the hero. It's the same problem with every industry now these days: The wrong people took over and theres nothing we can do about it.
I mean, as somethings grow, there are many other things that grow along with it.
In this case, Economies across major Countries increase and slightly drop by the minutes, either rushing or flowing to get that extra push on what drops.
The World is about money, now, more so than ever.
@@edwardrichtofen1252 people have finally discovered that money really does make the world survive.
I feel like Valve is the case study of a company that captured lightning in the bottle and now refuse to try new thing because they are too afraid to ruin that image
Ironically causing the image to be ruined.
Usually when a company...
1) Stops releasing games that the fans ask for, in fact beg for...
2) Breaks consumer protection laws
3) When caught, spends millions in legal fees and court costs to avoid giving refunds...the very reason they're in court to begin with
4) Inevitably loses only to continue breaking consumer protection laws and ends up in court again...and loses again
5) Then finally releases a game, except it's a disgraceful pile of shit pay to win game that nobody wants (Artifact)
Amazing reputation is long gone. Just the lawsuits alone and Valve's choices are enough. It would have been much cheaper to simply pay the fines and give people refunds. A company once known for making amazing games is now known for being run by nothing but fat greedy assholes.
It's not that they refuse to try new things in fact quite the opposite they always want to revolutionize for example with half life hl1 revolutionized story telling in fps, hl2 physics and alyx vr. Behind the scenes they are constantly making prototypes but get bored or don't like how it's going and scrap it
Valve is like the ice cream machine at McDonalds that is always out of order. There is a documentary on it but in a nut shell, McDonalds makes more money with a broken machine in constant repair that it would if it was up an running. Money is made by exclusive repair people and taking a cut. They point out that other fast food places have their own ice cream machines from the same company, but they are not breaking down.
Uhh... Valve have tried making a sequel and got a huge backlash from the game community. Now after the sequel success valve take the community word and never to make a sequel. Thats what i remember back in 2008.

You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain
I think a better quote for corporations would be "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself dance between being a villain and a super villain."
I don't like seeing this quote everywhere in YT comments. It promotes a very cynical and pessimistic perspective of life. It can realistically go either way. I've seen plenty of not-so-great people get their shit together and make very positive changes in their lives. There are also "evil" people who will probably never jump to the other end of the spectrum like Klaus Schwab, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, most politicians, etc. And there are very good people who will stay that way.
And yes, people change; that doesn't mean they have to change from good to evil or vice versa in every case though. The only constant in this universe is change. Everything is in a constant state of flux and motion. If something appears static, it's because it's changing so slowly (or even so quickly) that you can't see it with your current frame of mind, senses, etc.

@@garisonhayne668 I would propose that Valve and time are relative to another but should be viewed as one (Valvetime) and when a game is epic enough it can actually warp and bend "Valvetime" thus slowing it down. valve is probably the only big gaming company that is dumping money to advance the progress of gaming on linux. all their games have linux ports, and their vr headsets are the only ones that work native on linux. i can appreciate them for that
Tell what you want on their gaming development schedules and “anti-consumer” [fucking better than the other platforms by longshots] practices; Valve has and will continue to throw millions and work hard in R&D to push gaming to new extremes and accessibility, if it’s anything Valve loves, it’s community driven accessibility and supporting such ventures of modding, and Linux is open-source, literally the core concept of easily modified OS is something valve shares with games and no wonder they support it. They have faults but they aren’t a Bethesda or EA, theyre focused on technology than games, evident by the fact they are working with multiple companies in VR and even fucking BIC’s (Brain-Interfacing Computers) to advance such technologies to its best potential, and Alyx proved that by starting the push into VR AAA games.
This is because they are worried about Microsoft having control of windows and being a big gaming company at the same time. It's not because they are a good guy.

I believe they make so much passive money through steam that they don't want to risk making anything really. Especially HL3.
I think that (despite Artifact existing) Valve cares about the quality of their games, and they don't really want to chance it by making another game in one of their critically acclaimed series because they might not be able to outdo what they've already done in their prime, and it will just backfire horrendously.
