Agreed, but somehow the video still projects them as a bottom-line focused company. Doesn’t make sense. And that NDA is such regular practice - not indicative of anything nefarious
Important correction: Counterstrike wasn't made by Valve. It was a mod for Half-Life that Valve bought from the creators. It's also funny that Blizzard missed the opportunity to do the same with Dota, and Valve bought that too. So, an eye for good shit is also a part of Valve's arsenal.

I am so happy I was able to be a part of the TF2 glory days. It saddens me that experiences like that aren't really possible anymore, just to think of the friendships that came of that.
And they ruined TF 2 too. As far back as the Spy VS sniper update when careful considerations and design went out the window for "sidegrades" (Some of which were strictly better than what they replaced), the death of the art style they propped up as a guiding post, game balance, etc. Fucking shame.

I feel like Valve is the case study of a company that captured lightning in the bottle and now refuse to try new thing because they are too afraid to ruin that image
Usually when a company... 1) Stops releasing games that the fans ask for, in fact beg for... 2) Breaks consumer protection laws 3) When caught, spends millions in legal fees and court costs to avoid giving refunds...the very reason they're in court to begin with 4) Inevitably loses only to continue breaking consumer protection laws and ends up in court again...and loses again 5) Then finally releases a game, except it's a disgraceful pile of shit pay to win game that nobody wants (Artifact) Amazing reputation is long gone. Just the lawsuits alone and Valve's choices are enough. It would have been much cheaper to simply pay the fines and give people refunds. A company once known for making amazing games is now known for being run by nothing but fat greedy assholes.
It's not that they refuse to try new things in fact quite the opposite they always want to revolutionize for example with half life hl1 revolutionized story telling in fps, hl2 physics and alyx vr. Behind the scenes they are constantly making prototypes but get bored or don't like how it's going and scrap it
Valve is like the ice cream machine at McDonalds that is always out of order. There is a documentary on it but in a nut shell, McDonalds makes more money with a broken machine in constant repair that it would if it was up an running. Money is made by exclusive repair people and taking a cut. They point out that other fast food places have their own ice cream machines from the same company, but they are not breaking down.
Uhh... Valve have tried making a sequel and got a huge backlash from the game community. Now after the sequel success valve take the community word and never to make a sequel. Thats what i remember back in 2008.

valve is probably the only big gaming company that is dumping money to advance the progress of gaming on linux. all their games have linux ports, and their vr headsets are the only ones that work native on linux. i can appreciate them for that
Tell what you want on their gaming development schedules and “anti-consumer” [fucking better than the other platforms by longshots] practices; Valve has and will continue to throw millions and work hard in R&D to push gaming to new extremes and accessibility, if it’s anything Valve loves, it’s community driven accessibility and supporting such ventures of modding, and Linux is open-source, literally the core concept of easily modified OS is something valve shares with games and no wonder they support it. They have faults but they aren’t a Bethesda or EA, theyre focused on technology than games, evident by the fact they are working with multiple companies in VR and even fucking BIC’s (Brain-Interfacing Computers) to advance such technologies to its best potential, and Alyx proved that by starting the push into VR AAA games.
This is because they are worried about Microsoft having control of windows and being a big gaming company at the same time. It's not because they are a good guy.

@@brutusb8004 Ah yes, the 'if you defend a things right to exist then you must like it' angle. No, I think it's trash but if there's a market for it then it should be sold. I like games some people would say are very boring but it appeals to a minority of people who are very passionate about it.
What’s funny about Artifact was that, because its reach was so small, people were able to get away with streaming hardcore pornography on Twitch despite putting “Artifact” in their stream titles
that trend started with fans of livestreamer "forsen" when he got banned. Artifact was always a meme in the community, being a dead game on release and all, so they chose that to entertain themselves until forsen got unbanned.
I think that (despite Artifact existing) Valve cares about the quality of their games, and they don't really want to chance it by making another game in one of their critically acclaimed series because they might not be able to outdo what they've already done in their prime, and it will just backfire horrendously.
It's never happening, friend. It's been over 15 years of waiting. Most of the original devs, artists and writers who worked on HL2 and Episodes 1+2 are long gone. Not only that, there are 3 generations of consoles and young gamers who never experienced a Valve game being released. And no I don't count HL: Alyx, because the entire thing is a tech demo gimmick majority of gamers will never play. All it proved was Valve games are dead, and modern gamers don't care about a sequel to a 20 year old franchise, that they know the developer doesn't care about finishing, or respect their fans enough to communicate with.
Half life 3 won’t come until valve comes up with a huge innovation for the game, half life one showed off good levels and an interesting story shown in creative ways along with groundbreaking software and changed the industry. Half life two had incredible physics and graphics, another great story and many innovations that changed the industry and Alyx is the best vr game and probably going to be the new model for very shooters. Half life 3 will have to wait for something big to change in the game industry.
That's a a really good comment. Yeah you can really trace a large part of the success in each two games for the new stuff they brought forth. A Half-Life 3 with a good story and upgraded graphics would not satisfy everyone, although many fans would like it. Maybe Valve could be at the forefront of applying the huge developments in machine learning we have these days for stuff like AI, or maybe realistic speech synthesis, or something...
That's BS. The reason hl3 hasn't come out or maybe will never come out is that they've become too lazy to make the commitment to undertake a project of that scale. Steam has become a gravy train letting Valve employees slack without producing anything new and meaningful.
It's because they don't wanna do a project like Half Life or Half Life 2 again, it took them 2 years to develop the first one and 6 on the second one, they just don't wanna do a massive project like that again.
@Flatline I mean, I thought it was pretty self explanatory...you can be as nice as you like but you will never be big. If you want to be big then you need to build on a dirty foundation, then work on your image after the fact...

I bought the Orange Box _just_ for Portal. Portal was probably the first game I remember being truly _psyched_ for leading up to it's release. Like, yeah, I would see other games in development in magazines, online, etc... But I would kinda just think, "That looks fun, I want that, I'll have to remember that one!" Or else I would get caught up in someone else's hype in the days leading up to a launch, even though I didn't know shit about the game (I was just excited that I was going to have a new game to play that someone else wanted to play rather than me bugging them to play something). More often than not my hype was for hardware, because I would usually get a game, look at the box, get pumped and then pop it into my computer that would then just smoke a little and fart comically at me. Portal was different. It was probably the first game I saw the trailer for on RUclips (before it came out), and I vividly remember that trailer. I was hooked from day one. I made sure my PC was up to the task leading up to it so I wouldn't get caught with my pants down, I drooled over every scrap of information I could find, and when I heard about how Portal was based on a college final project, I went out to find and download Narbacular Drop, and then I played the absolute shit out of it over and over and over waiting for Portal. I never became this hyped for any other game again, though Doom Eternal came close. Lmfao I remember getting the Orange Box and being a little annoyed. "What? I have to buy all these _other_ games to get Portal? Why can't I just pay, like, 15 bucks _just_ for Portal!? What the Hell is a Team Fortress? It basically just looks like RTCW multiplayer/ Wolf: ET? And _Half Life?_ Half life 2, and Half life 2: Episode 1? The fuck does that mean? Which should I play first? I'm confused." Usually when a company...
1) Stops releasing games that the fans ask for, in fact beg for...
2) Breaks consumer protection laws
3) When caught, spends millions in legal fees and court costs to avoid giving refunds...the very reason they're in court to begin with
4) Inevitably loses only to continue breaking consumer protection laws and ends up in court again...and loses again
5) Then finally releases a game, except it's a disgraceful pile of shit pay to win game that nobody wants (Artifact)
Amazing reputation is long gone.

What’s funny about Artifact was that, because its reach was so small, people were able to get away with streaming hardcore pornography on Twitch despite putting “Artifact” in their stream titles
Like seriously?
@@dragoonman1478 yeah, among many other things that were entirely unrelated

that trend started with fans of livestreamer "forsen" when he got banned. Artifact was always a meme in the community, being a dead game on release and all, so they chose that to entertain themselves until forsen got unbanned.
The ironic thing is, all they’d have to do is make HL3 or L4D3 and the hype around them would make them an absolute fortune
Can't make em if you can't count to 3
The thing is. They know that
I believe they make so much passive money through steam that they don't want to risk making anything really. Especially HL3.
I think that (despite Artifact existing) Valve cares about the quality of their games, and they don't really want to chance it by making another game in one of their critically acclaimed series because they might not be able to outdo what they've already done in their prime, and it will just backfire horrendously.

Maybe Valve could be at the forefront of applying the huge developments in machine learning we have these days for stuff like AI, or maybe realistic speech synthesis, or something...
hl3 will come out when the world has access to exo suits
Maybe with the Steam deck, we can have some hope...

So, based on your hypothesis, I propose that the first derivative of valve time is not a constant, but rather is increasing as time progresses. Something like a hyperbolic tangent. Tanh(x).
@@garisonhayne668 I would propose that Valve and time are relative to another but should be viewed as one (Valvetime) and when a game is epic enough it can actually warp and bend "Valvetime" thus slowing it down. I remember how pumped I was when the orange box came out. So many good games for such a good price.
I'm confused."
Then I played Portal, HL2, and then never finished episode 1 until over a decade later lmao. Got my money out of TF2, tho, which is good because the new freemium version sucks lol.
