Hey Momo! A tip, from someone who's just finished a costume degree - if you've got a costume that needs to be hand washed or dry-cleaned, you can mix up a spray bottle of 50% water and 50% vodka (make sure it doesn't have added sugar or anything though!) and it'll kill off any smell causing bacteria! :) And a few drops of an essential oil into that mixture can add a nice scent to it if you so wish. Just turn the garment inside out, mist it all over and let it air dry, and bam, your garment's freshened up - we do this during theatre shows when there isn't enough time to dry clean, I imagine it could be helpful if you have to wear the same outfit multiple days for a LARP. Another helpful thing - sweat pads. You can either buy them - or make them out of a few layers of calico; pin them into your costume and take em out at the end of the day, they're easy and don't take up too much room :)
Great, but please be careful when using essential oils because they don't dissolve/mix with water (no idea about vodka tho) so make sure to shake well before you spray it. Also, don't use essential oils if you have sensitive skin, break out easily, have breathing problems, or if it will come in contact with small children or animals. Hope this helps!
in my computer design class we got an assignment to trace over whatever pic we want with the design program and i found one of faline with her sword out and thought "perfect" so now you're one of my school projects
I'm doing a colonial reenactment and I'm making my own dress, and it's my first time sewing this period, and I'm making my own patterns, and my machines broken so I'm hand sewing(because accuracy), and the event is in 3 weeks. But I'm fine! HAHAHAHahaHahAhe heh
Oh man I feel you so hard, I had to hand sew a belt for a school project once. Satin on both sides with elastic for durability and weight, I basically had to sew the whole thing five times. And embroidery. Took me two weeks sewing every spare minute I had, but at least it looks amazing. I’ll probably wear it to a larp someday
I really love that you point out the step of taking selfies, cause for me this is probably the hardest step and having someone reassure me that it´s fine to be proud of what you created means the world to me :)
If you ever want help with costumes the cosplay community has boomed and there are so many groups out there to give help. I am a costumer and a commissioner and I am apart of the groups with other commissioners and gladly give help to people who ask. I thought you looked very beautiful in the outfit.
i am curious what do you do to make it easier to decide which colour palet to use? cause i have an idea i want to make but i am stuck on the colour palette?
@@magicmyth2635 This is late, so it might not help now, but I tend to have nature inspirations in my costumes so you could google, say "sunset color palette," or the website coolors.co is a palette generator that's helpful!
One of these days I'll use all your lovely tips and tricks for a LARP. I just play in so many modern LARPs right now it's not even funny. I will say the Pinterest board is a really helpful tool with those because it helps me figure out my characters aesthetic. My Vampire is Rockabilly Motorcycle Babe, while my Werewolf is Hot Topic Teen Witch.
I think my favorite part of costuming is how it changes with the character! My current character used to wear a lot of darker tones cause she was a sad bean, but her kit has evolved to include a lot more colors as she has learned to be happy!!!
oh my word i love that you referenced over the garden wall. I make ALL of my friends sit down and watch the whole thing with me. Such a good little show. Also, i adore your costume!! I have no skill (or patience) for sewing or making costumes but this is fun for me to watch and inspires me to sketch things out - which i am just recently picking up again. You are an amazing inspiration, Mo Mo!
'People don't really notice when they're there, but they notice when they're not there.' Literally my entire life.... And you are SO SO TALENTED, considering that I struggle to even thread a needle in the first place. Love you!
Let me just say, I made my own costume, and it was sooooo good. So, thank you so much! I love how mine turned out and I even thrifted 75% of my outfit. So literally all I have to say, is OMG thank you SO much!!!
Rewatching videos of you cause i enjoy them lot,Im quite amazed that you take some pride of your art to concept it and drae it down!thats actually one of the best things an artist/ costumer can do cause usually many are like idk hoe to draw i wont even try to draw!
Ahhhh, you were on the Scarborough Bluffs! I almost had a heart attack seeing you on those cliffs, but it was such a beautiful place to have your photoshoot.
Thanks!!! From a costume sewing co-LARPER (though european) it's nice to have a video developping the touhgts process behind designing a full costume, and encouraging people to make it from scratch! (or at least combining it with original pieces) It adds to the atmosphere and avoids having everyone turn up in the same dresses and costumes! You can really tell the story of your character with your costume, but the really fun and interesting thing is to see it evolving with your character, you might have a setback and get more dirty, or join a new group and slowly try to blend in with them.... Looking forward to see how yours evolves!!
I've only been watching your videos for the past week but you have honestly inspired me so much. You have brought back an old love of mine when I was seven of dressing up and role playing. I have convinced my fiancee to have a medieval wedding thanks to you. (He also loves role play but not as much as I do) Once we do our little hand fasting ceremony I'll link a picture that we took to this video. He is going to be a human knight and I will be an elven maiden. I love you so much Momo, thank you for all of your videos and wonderful banter.
I'm a dresser at a theme park and I can tell you a chemical we use to make costumes not smell gross and sanitize is called Fresh Again! It's very helpful if you don't want to wash delicate costumes, you do need to dilute it (like bleach) but it works :)
omg your cat booping you while sewing reminds me so much of my cat. She likes to watch when I'm sewing, but also, when I'm working with leather, she likes to steal it right from my hand.
Marius Meiser I just have this irrational fear(because I saw it happen in a movie) of my fingers getting sewn, like my hand slips and there goes my fingers. Probably should learn though.
With the machine you mean? I dont know XD The closest I got to that was when I was sawing some pieces of leather on a glove, while I was wearing it , but I still have all my fingers :D
Same, 16 and still 2 years to go to a LARP, nevertheless I still have my costume close to finishing :3. Depending on what LARP you wanna do, but sewing is always helpful :D
Marius Meiser, Yeah, I have already started practicing by making my own costumes and stuff. I am getting character stories and insporation ready. I know it's years away, but never to early to practice.
Momo!! I get so incredibly happy whenever i see you post a video! This video is really helpful because i"ve been wanting to get more into cosplay and larp and i"ve always found the costume making the most daunting part!! thank you for the tips!!
Mo Mo, I was wondering if you could tell me if you had sewn the pants for your second Bicolline video for your character in the battles? I searched the entire internet for something like it. All I found was low-quality (actually the weird stretching material that people use for costumes??) male pants...... Anyways, if you answer thanks! I love your videos!
I think if you're putting a costume together from pieces, it's important to find one piece that you see and just think "yes, this is the embodiment of my costume". On my current costume (general renaissance festival, the theme for the day I'm going is "Barbarian Invasion" but I'm thinking slightly more fantasy) I just found that piece today. A gorgeous (second hand) sleeveless top with lace up sides and a hood. It's black with a detailed fabric... Just amazing. Technically from a high end company that makes good quality clothes of a more historical/renaissance ish style, but I would be equally excited if it were a low quality piece. It's about finding the one piece (or fabric or other material) that just defines to costume.
Also a tip from a person who studies fashion, wash your material before even starting to cut or do anything with it.This will help you a lot because if you wash the already made costume it can shrink in different places and will just be awful
You have become more and more stunning as the years have passed. I'm very proud of you for what you've accomplished. Come LARP at Underworld with me. I'll show you around. Itll be a blasty blast!!
hi, i’m a boot maker etc. who burnt out on cowboys and renn faire . i think larp looks fun so am checking vids. thanks for your fun and informative site. i too did want to “ rush “ the finish for quite a while. search , FINISH LINE SYNDROME. especially the archery example. love your work.k
if you want fantastic patterns with accuracy like no zippers or funky looking shapes that don't look quite right, i suggest The Tudor Tailor, JP Ryan and Truly Victorian, i use them all the time when sewing garments
If you want to make a sample costume, go to a second hand store and buy sheets to use as sample fabric. Wash really well in hot water and sew. Also Joann fabrics has sales in their patterns to where they are $1.99. I have a Joann app and it helps to keep an eye on their sales.
The part about the leg hurting is so incredibly specific but it happened to me when I wore my costume to my local Ren Fest!!! It’s a little sad though because I bought it and didn’t make it 😭
am I the only minor who gets anxiety because you think about larp going out of style when you're finally old enough to go by yourself or is it just me- shit it's just me isn't it.
with me I tend to blend bit's of my reality with whatever fictional world I'm in. So for something like Skull and cross bones I knew from the get go if I ever did this I would go with the look of a runaway navel man's son. AKA a big coat that doesn't look like it fits quite right, long sash, two swords of varying quality (AKA one low ranking sword and one high ranking sword), a rather poor tricorn hat, flint locks, old distressed boots, and just that general look of a kid wo ran from home.
So the garbage bags are a good thing to use to mock up a garment but if you take those pieces and trace them on thick paper (like grocery store paper bags or builders paper if you're richer than i) then you have your own pattern peices that you can use again and again.
I gave up with a machine and began hand-sewing. It takes longer but there is more detail you can put in. If you do hand-sew, watch Bernadette Banner here on RUclips. She's amazing and has great tips!!!! She's who I learned from!

Brenda Woods where did u go to get a costume degree? I’m looking at online schools.
This is awesome
Great tip!

Cat: " you look stressed" nose poke

Your grandmother's wedding dress is soo pretty!
Omg your cat touching your face when you were at thr sewing machine lol. 😹
Do you have a sea shanty play list?? 😊 I'd love to hear it. ❤
I love hearing advice and tips from “non-costumers” as it adds new perspectives we might not have thought of!
"This piece here is from my grandmother's wedding dress" HEART STOPS! *gasp* oh no she didn't! lol
dude her wedding dress was beautiful and looked like it fit you so well holy shit. but i guess its nice to have as apart of your art
Oooh I’m so sorry :(
How did it go?
Oh man I feel you so hard, I had to hand sew a belt for a school project once. Satin on both sides with elastic for durability and weight, I basically had to sew the whole thing five times. Right, I wouldn't have cut it at all

The sad bean became a happy bean!
Dear momo, thank you
because of the skull and crossbows video - i'm buying a ticket! IM PACKED WITH SEA SHANTIES ALREADY HOLY CRAP
Your cat is so friggin' cute and so are you
I love this costume! It's such a unique take on the classic pirate look!
STOP HATING YOURSELF YOU ARE AWESOME. TAKE MY LOVE. TAKE IT.
Your grandma's wedding dress is an awesome touch!
Hey Momo I love your LARPS and costumes. Also I love your bright and colourful nature so keep on doing what you love . :)
Apparently I watched this several years ago, and but I still love this!
oh my word i love that you referenced over the garden wall. I make ALL of my friends sit down and watch the whole thing with me. Such a good little show.

Could you give tips on how you made the tattered skirt look? Is it just layers of skirts ripped in different ways? Thank you!!!
Your photos look so beautiful! I really love this character design! You executed it so well!
Rewatching videos of you cause i enjoy them lot,Im quite amazed that you take some pride of your art to concept it and drae it down!thats actually one of the best things an artist/ costumer can do cause usually many are like idk hoe to draw i wont even try to draw!

I recommend the Medieval Tailor's Assistant from Sarah Thursfield if you want to make garments or cloth from 1200 to 1500.
I've only been watching your videos for the past week but you have honestly inspired me so much. You have brought back an old love of mine when I was seven of dressing up and role playing.

Sewing is one of my favorite things to do so I’m gonna love making larp costumes

You did an amazing job! I love the aesthetic with the white and pink.
LARPing sounds so much fun!!!
Is this a kpop fan I see?
Dammit it would be hella awkward if u aren't
omg your cat booping you while sewing reminds me so much of my cat. She likes to watch when I'm sewing, but also, when I'm working with leather, she likes to steal it right from my hand.
This is honestly still one of my favorite videos of yours. It really inspired me to start getting to work on stuff for next LARP season :)
Your costumes are so great I would love to draw them lol. The flow of this look is soooo cute
That gold dress at 00:15 is absolutely stunning!
That is the cutest cat I have ever seen
I still sew by hand :3 Maybe I should start learning how to use the machine XD or I will just stay with armor making XD
Marius Meiser

Wrapping paper is good and thin cheap white fabric is good for draping onto a mannequin
You enjoy Muppet's Treasure Island!! Clearly you are the best person!
Everything about this video is beautiful.

Just wanna say your grandma's wedding dress was sooo beautyfull
You can buy historic clothes from prior attire
I’m creating a Dystopia Rising character costume and I’m so gonna use this to help me make it lol
Wait... IS THAT THE RIDDLE ROOM IN TORONTO?!! I JUST WENT THERE FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH FRIENDS FOR CHRISTMAS!!!
you're so pretty and rock all these different hair colors that you've had
Mo Mo, chill. You're great & AMAZING. Keep on shining :)
Your cat!!! Ahhh so cute! This was another great video Momo. Great tips and information.

The part about the leg hurting is so incredibly specific but it happened to me when I wore my costume to my local Ren Fest!!! It’s a little sad though because I bought it and didn’t make it 😭
amazing mo mo!!!!!
I have a costume idea that’s basically a lot of 1/2 circle skirts so they’ll be pretty easy to see but I just don’t have the fabric to actually see it
This is a very interesting and also helpful video! Thanks! 😊
Thank you :D this really helped alot, i can now start making my costume for CoW17 :D
I. LOVED. THIS!
