I had the same doubt as well, I think they use a pitch shifter to change the tuning mid song. Hence why they can use the Low D during the main song but then for the chorus and breakdowns, they can switch to the C

Check out @Niknocturnals cover of the song. In that he says to use a pitch shifter at a certain part. Hope that helps.
