Your videos have convinced me that flat roofs in an area that gets a lot of rain is a very bad idea. Even the slightest of angles would have made a massive difference.
Yeah where I live flat roofs normally have a slight slope but a neighbour had their flat garage roof replaced badly and it's a permanent pond now. Sooner or later I think it will be a problem.
Depending on when it was built and what the code was at the time - unknown - but modern single-slope roof codes require a minimum grade, like 2:12 (two inches of pitch for every 12 inches of distance between the eave (low edge) and peak or ridge (high edge). Thanks for taking us along your journey.

As a retired carpenter have you considered when redoing the roof, put a slight picth on the roof, with a heayvier gutter system. Since roof is demoed it would be easier too handle, and in long haul will save the possibilities of future issues.

Exactly had the same thoughts : what are you gonna do with all this precious wood panels and beams ? It can be reused to make the new roof (with a slop this time), saving materials and money.
Exactly! I cringe at some of the stuff I see go straight to the bin! They are always saying how great the old wood is compared to what you get now days, & it's free! Your hard work is commendable for SURE! Time will go by & you will have a great house for alot less $. I hope.
Really a shame…I get it that they are probably too tired to think about stockpiling and reusing wood, but I bet a local furniture maker would take it off their hands.
Yessss! Im new here so I just binge watched all the videos and now I have to wait for the new ones! I really sit down for them with a snack:) longer would be fun!

Idk if somebody else already said it, but please take of your gloves/anything that’s dangling while using the saw or any other power tool! If your glove gets in the blade, your whole hand automatically goes in there too! Be safe (from a carpenter girl)! 🫶🏼
So true, got that advice drilled into me from a young age. If it spins, no gloves, no loose sleeves, no long hair, and NEVER jewelry. That last one... had it happen to a coworker and now I can't ever wear rings again.
Jenna, Hammer Tip: it is easier to pull nails, if you put a block of wood under the nose of the Hammer. you get more leverage that way, and the nails come out way easier. I know right now that you're hammering them back out, but if you hammer them out just enough to get the claw under the head first, then you can use the block trick to pull them out the rest of the way. glad you were able to save the large Chimney. you guys are doing an Awesome Job! 😀

As a civil engineer from Brazil, I confess I'm loving seeing the different construction methods applied elsewhere. Particularly the roof. It's very interesting to see how flat it is!! Maybe because rainfall rates in Brazil are much higher, it's very rare to see a roof like that...
The flat roof is more a matter of the mid century modern style popular when the home was built. Their area gets much rain. It would contribute to there being few of these houses remaining.
It's totally fine for places like California, Arizona, etc. and those places were growing rapidly at the time this house was built, so buildings of this style were popular, but it was a truly terrible idea to do something like this in the rainy Pacific Northwest. It looks great, but we have far too much rainfall and fog condensation to make it practical. This was around the time in history when we stopped being as regionally-specific with our architecture and construction, and as you can see it leads not just to cultural loss, but structural loss as well

The way I would be so excited to take all those old beams and that glass, cut out all the bad parts and turn it into something new. I guess it's hard to tell without a close-up look, but so much of that looked salvageable.
Have any of your neighbours offered to help? If I were there, I would help not only because it's nice to, but also because it means the house gets done faster and the noise and stuff does too. You two are doing a great job and I hope to see you living in your home soon!
They have an amazing work ethic, great team work and a hecking adorable relationship! I love how Nick says the cutest things to her and they both just seem so genuine and nice. I love this series so much!!
Tip for the roof: I noticed when you were removing it there's A LOT of moss on the roof. Moss is murder for any roof, as it'll hold moisture. Moisture = weight. While you cannot remove the roof, do this to buy time 1. Wait for a week of like, no rain in the forecast. Then take off the tarp on the one part you can't pull and remove the moss. Afterward LEAVE IT UNCOVERED. Let it dry out. Then tarp it before it rains again. This will buy you some time . 2. Put some support beams inside for the roof. They make jack like ones in home Depot too. You can do both without a permit. That water will kill your roof and that tarp isn't helping
I love how nick is so supportive of jenna and always says "its so cute" to the things jenna does. It really melts my heart how you two just are just so sweet!😍
Regarding the trashcan water tanks... you can buy a super cheap submersible fish tank water pump (est $15) and some hose. Hook it up to power or battery pack and itll drain that 55 gallon trash can quickly. You could even wire it up to a cheap water sensor to kick on automatically.
I just love the way you two talk to each other and lift each other up through shared commitment to the project and laughter and excitement the whole way through!
A couple we used to hang out with when we were first married used to have a person who played bagpipes in their neighborhood. It was in a suburb of St. Louis, MO. We used to love to sit on their back porch and listen to them play.
It’s something bout seeing you all turn this beautiful old historic home into your owns that’s so amazing I can’t wait to see the final results it’s going to be a vibe 👏🏾
Love the pretty hammer Jenna. Also love you and Nick together! Especially love you guys taking apart and rebuilding this old home. Who knew how much I enjoyed watching you guys!🥰
watching you guys is so inspiring! Im still sitting here putting off emptying the dish washer though! Hope the roofers show up before any rain! cant wait until next week!
1:50 that roof shot looks just like whenever I look at seaweed at the beach. You could seriously take a slow-mo video of that and create amazing cinematic stock footage of the greatest untouched estuary mankind hasn’t destroyed yet and I would 100% believe you
You might look into a small sump pump to move water. You can stick a hose into a bucket, and the "exit" hose can lead outside so you don't have to haul it by hand. Could be used to take it off the roof too.
I think you are both doing an amazing job! I don't know what happened previously but where ever you found Nicky you found a good one! He's a keeper. Good luck with the rest of your renovations x
You really make it look so easy to work so much on a house. The view on the top of the house is so perfect. Maybe It’s not a good idea because of to much rain, but a roof top garden/terrasse area would be so perfect. Just sitting their with something to eat and watch the sunset. 🥰
So, does this mean we get a new roof next week?!?!? It’s cool seeing how things were built before plywood. Must have taken the carpenters so much longer.
You know plywood has been around for a long...long time? Like since 1797 with the first US patent being filed in 1865. Plywood has been used as a building material for a long time.
I don’t think they can do any more work on the roof until they redo the framing and structural supports. And before they can even do that they’ll need to remove the other half of the roof. It’s going to be a while until they get a new roof. I can’t wait to see how it looks though.
You have earned my respect. Taking an exsisting unwanted home and making it yours. I think people these days can be very wasteful. Its a beautiful home and will be spectacular once again when you are done .In a time where a lot of people want buy new. Your doing a great job
Flat roofs in the Pacific Northwest seems like a poor decision. I understand aesthetically why they made the choice, but man, maintenance should then be scheduled religiously.
@@brendasnow8255 it seems neither of the children of the original owner did anything to take care of the house, even the one in possession. it was a very grand house and the person in possession of it was unable to take care of it properly for whatever reason long before they passed. It’s a shame because a house like that should still have been a show place. I look forward to seeing Jenna bring it back to some of the old glory.
@@jnl.,where I live in England the houses around here were built between 1930s and 1960s and all have the original sloping tiled roofs. Many of the flat roofed garages ( mostly built later than the houses as an after thought) have had the roofs repaired or replaced. That said they must replace their flat roofs as they are a vital part of the design, but incorporate a small slope and keep them well maintained.
When maintained, they work extremely well in central/southern Arizona, New Mexico, and Southern California. It's dry most of the year, and as long as you keep the drains clear, the torrential rains will flush harmlessly down the gutters. Especially in the PNW, trees and squirrels dropping junk down the drains alone is enough reason to never install a flat roof. One interesting way of dealing with the flat roof craze I've seen in Northern California is to have a shallow pitched or gabled roof and a decorative parapet surrounding the roof to give the illusion of flatness. You still get the issue of the drains, but at least water doesn't want to accumulate in the middle of the roof.
Wednesday means Jenna and Nick day ❤ You two are lovely to watch, and your view is amazing 👏 I know the house will be equally amazing when you are done and I'm here for it 😀

I love watching this team. Nicky and Jenna work so well together. It's refreshing to see positives among all the negatives that are out there these days. Also nice that Drywall Dave pitches in as well. Nicky and Jenna will have a beautiful home to thoroughly enjoy together once it is completed.
You two make an amazing team. You're doing a great job on this house and Nikki is so intelligent. Please find a way to create an angle on your flat roof and have a vinyl coating added to it. That's what I did and it really made a difference. Always looking forward to your videos. 😁❤️

Me2
Those are nice hammers! Martinez was very generous.
Tip for the roof: I noticed when you were removing it there's A LOT of moss on the roof. Moss is murder for any roof, as it'll hold moisture. Moisture = weight. While you cannot remove the roof, do this to buy time
Despite all the problems, that was a beautifully built roof!
I love how nick is so supportive of jenna and always says "its so cute" to the things jenna does. It really melts my heart how you two just are just so sweet!😍
I was waiting for the pink hammer bcs ive never seen one🤧 congratulations on your pink hammer🎉🤭
Jenna and Dave in matching outfits! So cute!
I hope you saving for reuse some of that structural hardwood. It's expensive and hard to source these days compared to when the house was built.
Regarding the trashcan water tanks... you can buy a super cheap submersible fish tank water pump (est $15) and some hose. Hook it up to power or battery pack and itll drain that 55 gallon trash can quickly. You could even wire it up to a cheap water sensor to kick on automatically.
i really have to say I'm stunned how nice you are always talking to each other... my nerves and my nice language would be GONE 🙈🤣🤣🤣
Bagpipe music makes me cry, and I'm not even Irish.
@@elizabetharmendariz6004 Happy tears or sad tears? Lol.
Lucky you!😻 Bagpipes are like cilantro, it’s in your DNA to either love them or hate them. I loooove them😻😻😻
There used to be an older man in my old neighborhood who would walk around the neighborhood playing the bagpipes every Sunday afternoon
I love the way yall talk to each other through such a frustrating and challenging experience.
Sooooo cute both of you together. What a team !!!!! Jenna and her hammer and Nicky and his tool belt. Invencible. 😂😂😂
So exciting watching your home get renewed!! Great videoing and editing!🥇🌟👑🩷
1:30 I can’t explain why but I *really* love this music track that you use. Love watching this journey, thanks for including us Jenna 💚
I've heard it before in a different variation (I liked it too). Kind of reminds me of some of the Motown stuff in the 70s.
I think they still have permit issues so it's gonna be a little while longer.
@@kirstenwaugh8473 oh yeah. Of course.
You have earned my respect. Taking an exsisting unwanted home and making it yours. I think people these days can be very wasteful. Its a beautiful home and will be spectacular once again when you are done .In a time where a lot of people want buy new. Your doing a great job
I just got food ready and needed a YT Video. perfect timing thank you
Literally same
oh my god same
me too breakfast b4 work
that view is insane.. what a dream. the pnw will always be my forever home (just a little further south from Vancouver though, in west WA)
Hi pro tip Jenna ! You must use the small V notch on the side of the Hammerhead to pull out the nails.
Just keep imagining the videos of her crocheting in the finished house.
Construction and renovation vlogs are somehow my favourite content so thank you for posting so much!
Don't throw away the chimney rocks use them to make a bbq grill or outdoor fireplace/pit!
As an person who lives in Asia houses made of wood will never cease to amaze me! Crazy how yall can just take your house apart with a hammer!!
Flat roofs in the Pacific Northwest seems like a poor decision. I understand aesthetically why they made the choice, but man, maintenance should then be scheduled religiously.
House was abandoned.
I blame the Californians. Flat roofs make sense there where it doesn't rain much and basically never snows.
Wednesday means Jenna and Nick day ❤ You two are lovely to watch, and your view is amazing 👏 I know the house will be equally amazing when you are done and I'm here for it 😀
Your channel is a hidden gem, glad I stumbled upon it!
Fantastic work.
Wow! I can definitely imagine the relief you guys will feel when the roof is replaced/water tight. On the bright side the views from your house are really amazing. 👍
Looked up the house on google earth. It's a very lovely neighbourhood, will make a lovely home!
so did I - found it after a bit of a search.
I love watching this team. Nicky and Jenna work so well together. It's refreshing to see positives among all the negatives that are out there these days. Also nice that Drywall Dave pitches in as well. Nicky and Jenna will have a beautiful home to thoroughly enjoy together once it is completed.
Don't forget killer Kelly 😊
I look forward to sitting down and watching these videos with dinner every Wednesday, anyone else do the same? 🥰
Yes i do!
It’s my Wednesday bedtime story 😂
Yes, it has become the Wednesday night reality home improvement show,2024 of course.
I commend them for taking on such a huge project, it may take awhile but they are making strides every week.
Another great video. We look forward to every Wednesday now! Love the pink hammer.
This house is literally build on love. And respect. ❤
Roof top decking, fencing , drainage system , Astro turf (artificial grass) , table, chairs, beers/wine + view = A potential wow!
You two make an amazing team. You're doing a great job on this house and Nikki is so intelligent. Please find a way to create an angle on your flat roof and have a vinyl coating added to it. That's what I did and it really made a difference. Always looking forward to your videos. 😁❤️
I can’t wait to see the rest of this house be worked on! ❤
I'm mesmerized by how methodically everything is being done. You should both be very proud of yourselves!
Great progress.
So glad your Dad is ok.
Thanks for sharing.
Just want to say your filming and editing skills are becoming top notch. And the view from the roof ❤ stunning and breathtaking.
