      It is because they are doing the work themselves. Which means they can only tackle so much within a reasonable time frame. If they had a crew come in an knock this out in less than a week than they could get a permit for the entire roof. Unless there are structural reasons why they don't want the frame uncapped without tying half of it back in before proceeding.

      @@holly5207 Yeah, because probably then they can demand even more permits and $$$. The government where I live is horribly corrupt in this exact way--so much so, that 100% of new investment, new builds/business etc. usually goes to surrounding cities instead because it's so much cheaper and easier--and that leads me to believe that many other municipalities have the same problem. Entrenched scumbags and their lackeys ruining everything, basically. They always retire rich, while the cities they mismanaged fall further into decay.

  • @mariarose2488
    @mariarose2488 6 месяцев назад +1346

    Can't tell why people are upset or claiming that they are basically just building a new house. This place has structural problems so wanting them to salvage rotten, water-damaged wood is just unrealistic. What they are doing is necessary and we have barely began to see all that they will do to honour the original house.
    The fact that they are keeping some of the momentos and pictures of what the house used to look like, that they want to keep the pool instead of filling it in, and that they even proceeded with such a loaded and complicated project in the first place is proof enough that they are the right people for this task.
    Everyone is allowed to express opinions and disagree with the things they do but you don't have to be rude or borderline harassing about it. People are weird about other people changing or renovating things. It probably comes from a mindset of ''that could have been mine and I liked it as it was before'' or ''I could do this so much better", but this is their house. It doesn't belong to you which is on you for not buying it (or probably not even being aware of its existence) before them.
    Instead of giving unsolicited advice or hating on them, go be productive. Buy your own house and fix it your way or become a director for reno projects since you know best and want to be in control. If not, then remember that you wouldn't even know about this project if she hadn't have posted. It is a privilege to get to get a peek into their lives and home. Don't ruin this for them and the people who are curious and invested in the final result of their home.

    The people complaining that you guys are taking down too much of the house clearly don’t understand the extensive amount of damage, rot and hazards this house has/ had. To fix up a house that is damaged to this level requires you to take everything down to the absolute BARE. BONES. And if the bones are damaged, it’s the most structurally important element that needs to be fixed. What makes this difficult is that there’s some things in the house that aren’t damaged, but are attached to the things that are damaged. Meaning the usable bits still need to be removed to get to the damaged parts. Yes, it’s upsetting to see all the characteristics of the house go (I’m still mourning the wood panelling), but it’s more important to have a house that won’t fall apart than to maintain every piece of its prior self. I think it’s clear that you guys are trying to maintain the house’s structure best you can while still making it your own. most other people would demolish the house and just build on the lot.

      Thank you I think you answered my question. When they started cutting the support beams in half and taking them down I kind of got sick because the support beams look like they’re in great condition and they’re very expensive to replace so I was like why are they doing that I will saythat even if they have to come down because of what’s underneath them, they should’ve had people helping them get them down in one piece so that they could reuse them at some point don’t you think?

    • @TinaP1234

      The tragedy of this house is how long it was left in disrepair by the estate. I am not sure if the house was stuck in some kind of legal limbo for years after the owner died, but the ants and the major water damage could have been avoided.

    • @spiltmjlk
      @spiltmjlk 6 месяцев назад +8

      @@MoNaBookworm there’s definitely ways to salvage some pieces but when they’re so difficult to remove they end up damaged from trying to knock/ rip them out. sadly a lot of the larger pieces look like there’s small parts of it with damage which makes the whole piece unsalvageable because of the risk of the rot spreading and leaving the wood weak ://

      I agree. I did feel, and still do, that the panelling should have been salvaged and reused as it was in great shape. But it's genuinely impressive that this couple didn't just raze the whole thing and start over. You're right--most people would've done exactly that. Honestly though the best thing they did was take out a couple of trees. The view from that house is worth every penny it cost, to me anyway. So beautiful.

      Just deal with the flood hazard first. You didn't say what caused it but if you can prevent a recurrence, take care of that--re-do plumbing, drainage, install a sump pump, fix whatever you can. One thing at a time. Then, remind yourself that the house just survived a flood and it's still standing. Odds are, it will still stand longer than your lifespan as long as you do basic exterior diligence--make sure the roof is good, that sort of thing. Make a financial plan and start saving, and try not to worry about the foundation.

    Always keep a jacket and a raincoat in the car for every person. A spare pair of socks and shoes is not a bad idea either. It saves misery. Keep in mind while you are tearing down this scary structure that it has stood for what, seventy years? It has borne the snow load and the rain. Yeah, it wasn't built right, but it worked. The main problem is the flat roof, which will ALWAYS eventually leak. If the roof had had even a little pitch on it, that structure might have stood for a couple of centuries. Many a backwoods cabin or farm house has stood for a couple of centuries being built by the farmer who lived in it, and built out of whatever rough materials were at hand. You could lean some plywood against those windows to protect them from getting hit.

      I fully get where you are coming from but there are times when "safety" causes more problems than the safety it offers. If we're talking about roofers that are working with sheets of metal roofing on steep slippery angles and they're not moving that much, definitely. But there are a lot of times that when you are moving alot, going up and down ladders, not going near the edge that much, carrying loads of smaller or even hard to carry loads, having a tethered harness can be a huge hazard for tripping and cost a lot of time getting in and out of it as you leave your tethered area. There are some jobs such as tower climbers that specifically DONT tether in until they have manually climbed hundreds of stories because the effort of managing the harness would make the trip to the top physically impossible. At the end of the day it's *their* call to make and maximum levels of safety isnt always the best course.

    However, one thing you might not be aware of is a genie lift. You could probably get a rental company to sponsor you, or genie lift themselves. Seriously though, it's basically a hand crank fork lift that you can roll around inside. Would have been perfect for those beams, push it up, cut where you want, crank it down, pick it up from arm level. They're not super expensive and we use them to put everything from gantry cranes to machine tools together. Very very useful.

      At some point (50% for fires in some places in the US), the entire house has to come down and be rebuilt to current code. I'm not sure where they are in demolition percentage, but it keeps getting closer, especially with plans to change structure in other parts of the house.
      That house is far from meeting current code, particularly for earthquake-prone PNW. There were no joist hangers holding up the roof, for example. The rest of the house in places they want to keep are very likely to have the same issues. There are newer requirements for foundation attachment, for wall shear resistance, and possibly sturdier foundations with more rebar and possibly stronger concrete.
      If you want to see the kind of things that have to be done in the PNW, AwesomeFramers build a lot of new houses there in the US. There are a lot of energy-related requirements, such as exterior insulation required on new houses, depending on which code is being used. The single-pane windows also won't pass.
