  • Andrei Illarionov, the former chief economic adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, tells CNN's Jim Sciutto that he thinks imposing a "smart embargo" on Russia, where money accumulated by countries dependent on Russian gas and oil is not given back to Putin, could end the war in Ukraine quickly. #CNN #News

I think Russia is a great country with a lot of potential and he dreamed of a democratic Russia, which is focusing on it‘s economy. But a regime like Putins is not for Russians or Russia anymore, but for a small elite, that is obsessed with their power. The sad thing is, they will loose a lot of smart young people, because all people that criticise the regime have to flee the country or get jailed or worse.

Nato ( James Baker ) promised in 1990 they would not expand to the east. The did. Russia is surrounded by American and Nato soldiers and military bases. Nato and America were behind the coup in 2014 in Ukraine. So now they also want Ukraine, the backyard of Russia. Like Noam Chomsky said ; ' No Russian president would allow Ukraine to join a hostile military alliance'. Nato and America are agressors. America bombed Vietnam, Korea, Laos, Cambodia, Chili, Salvador, Nicaragua , Guatemala, Panama, Brasil, Indonesia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia etc. Obama bombed 23 countries with drones. America used chemical weapons in Vietnam ( Agent Orange and Napalm ), and in Iraq ( depleted uranium in Fallujah, google Fallujah babies ). America did 40 regime changes in the world. Operation Condor, Operation Mongoose ,Operation Northwoods etc. America was behind the coup in Ukraine in 2014. America financed , armed and trained neo-nazi's of the Azov Battalion and C14 Ukraine. Just like they trained and financed the Taliban in Afghanistan to fight the Russians. America armed and trained ISIS according to the American General Michael Flynn. Since 2014 the Azov Battalion and C14 Ukraine are killing Russians in Ukraine. Zelensky is in the Pandora Papers, jailed many critics, banned Russian language and culture and closed 3 tv stations. They don't care about the people in Ukraine. It is all about the expansion of Nato and making billions with the military industrial complex ,and 'weakening' the 'enemy' Russia. Not to mention that the fallout of this would have a profound economic impact on these countries, which would ripple into world economics as well.
Lets not forget how the US turns a blind eye to a lot what happens in OPEC states because of the economic ramifications. Its a very similar situation for Europe. But at least they scramble to disconnect themselves from the dependency on Russian fossil fuels, but it takes time...

I’ve never received money or goods from Putin either. I’m not going to go into the economic impact because that’s been well covered by Ganiscol. But even if the economic impact would only be minor, they still couldn’t cut off Russian gas immediately or thousands will freeze to death next winter, or die from food poisoning from being unable to cook their food. You can’t just say oh well bad luck to that. They must have a suitable replacement ready first.
Think about the chaos when the Texas electric grid went down last year. That lasted 17 days and killed up to 700 people. Now imagine that lasting 3 months, or longer if it’s a very cold winter, in densely populated cities. Lots of them. Tens of thousands would die.

This man is very smart. I think he is "intimatly informed" as to Putins thinking, but also the regime as a whole.🤔 I think this man gave great insight & knowledge on a "completely tangible way" to not only defund putins war machine. But the Russian Regime behind putin, as well. Also, I feel he has thought of a great way to bring the negativity surrounding the putin regime down, in that way. He's also raised the positivity factor, by identifying a way of REBUILDING, renormalizing and BETTERING the lives of the Ukrainian people! And so, I think this is a great way to go about the situation.

I think a peace deal is very simple , Russia and Ukraine needs to extend the cease-fire at the steel plant until Ukraine forces leave and they can return to Kiev or western Ukraine , they need to extend the cease-fire , I still don't think Russia is to blame for the war because this should have been solved in 2014 when Russian demands were ignored , now that the war started , it needs to end and we need to remove the sanctions on Russia
I am a democrat and I voted for Biden and I think his doing a great but we need a long term plan were we remove sanctions on nations like Russia or Iran or Cuba and we focus on our domestic issues , sanctions on other nations have achieved nothing and sanctions are immoral , these sanctions are the wrong policy and they have done nothing to improve our own economy
We need to stop all domestic drilling in this country and we need to import oil , its cheaper , its cleaner and it helps create jobs in this country , from shipyard workers to exporting oil drilling technology , we have the best technology when it comes to oil drilling equipment in America , we could also convert some of our steel factories in order to sell drilling equipment .
we need to remove sanctions on Russia because NATO needs Russian oil , Ukraine could have done more to prevent this war but now the war needs to stop , Russia can return areas under its control to Ukraine and Ukraine needs to stop its attacks on Donetsk and Lugansk , these two cities support Putin and they have the right to support Putin without being discriminated and they have the right to leave Ukraine if they vote to leave
Instead of creating a new world order based on trade , our sanctions have created a world disorder , we only have ourselves to blame . The war needs to stop but both Russia and Ukraine need a peace deal where both sides can improve relations in the future , Russia can return Mariupol as a show of goodwill and Ukraine would allow more independence to Donetsk and Luhansk since these two cities support Putin . A peace deal would also benefit NATO , because they can continue imports of Russian oil and it would benefit Ukraine and Europe

The smart embargo is an interesting idea. On the face of it, you would imagine that it simply wouldn’t work. You tell the Russians that you’ll continue paying for their oil & gas, but the money is going into an escrow account that doesn’t release any funds until Russian troops withdraw from Ukraine. Surely the Russians would just say “no, that violates our agreement” and turn off the supply? Well, probably - but maybe not. Who else are they going to sell to? Would it put yet more pressure on Putin to end this nonsense? “Dude, we have a billion dollars a day accumulating but we can’t touch it until this war is over….” I don’t know. Who knows how Putin thinks? And Europe would have to be ready to transition completely away from Russian energy, because there is every chance they’ll just turn it off.

    • @robertlock622
      @robertlock622 2 года назад +2

Turning off the supply is not necessarily very simple for Russia, and could be very expensive in terms of replacing capital equipment when they come to turn it back on. Also they are very dependent on western companies for oil services, so if they turn the supply off they may be un-able to turn it back on without Western help. They might be persuaded to continue supply while some of the revenue entered an escrow account (at least potentially the operating profit proportion). Would be worth a try.

Yes, absolutely. One can imagine how rich and powerful a EU with Russia included would be.
EU as it is already is capable of being a superpower, if the pieces are put together correctly.
However - a EU with Russia, Ukraine etc as member states would not just be one of the superpowers, it would be the absolute number one superpower on the planet.
If this war wouldn't have happened - Ukraine joining before Russia could have been one of the steps for Russia to join.
Probably if Ukraine joins we'd already make russian one of the EU languages - so after that whats more logical than for Russia to join next after their "little brother" nation already went ahead and joined - and their language is already a working language of EU?
Unfortunately, with this Invasion all of that went to hell. Ukrainians are suffering horribly, Russians also got it fairly bad (and for them it will just get worse from here), even EU is having some losses from it.
And after this, Russia will basically become a client state of China.
