I was a Marine Engineer during my time at sea and even all those years ago we were expected to hold a certificate one above the position filled. While steam ships were still in the fleet chief engineers were expected to hold both motor and steam certificates.
Same here. Deck cadet last 2015. Graduated 2017, went onboard as Junior 3rd officer last 2018. And now a full fledged 3rd officer finally. Now about to finish my first contract as 3/O. Lot of new experiences. Super blessed to have this opportunity being only 23yrs old. Nice vlog chief! Drone footage was awesome!
Bro if u don't mind can I know ur college name

I don't know why I cried at the last part of this video. I used to go onboard Chief as a Deck Cadet. I've been on 3 contracts. Yet I decided to stop for a while to think if seafaring is really for me. After watching this video, I found my answer. Thank you Chief!! Have a wonderful career 🙂
Well said Chief MAKOi, "perfect timing, or more importantly, having the patience to wait for it" God Bless!
Your right on all of that Chief. Two things I will never forget, getting my 3rd Mate rating and later my Unlimited Masters License. The bridge crews of 35 years ago were a lot different than today and frankly not as soft on the newbies. When I showed up the Captain asked who I was and I told him your new 3rd Mate. He never looked at me and told me to go measure the draft. Off I went with my pen and writing pad I did that 6 times, on the 7th time down the Chief Mate stopped me and asked point blank why the hell I was going and coming so damn much. I told him why. He started laughing so hard he bit his cigar into and told me that was his job and not mine. Furious I climbed back to the bridge to give the Captain a piece of my mind, for the first time that day he looked me in the eye and said, "Kid, it's your job to know your responsibilities, your watch starts at 0100." And that was that. Looking back I get the humor of it. You wanted to get angry and sometimes I did, but you learned from it.
Thanks for the insight Captain!
Trust me people, “The Chief” is speaking 100% truth!
I agree
Yep
Correct :)
D biro ang buhay marino, salute to all of u💙

What a fine young man.His parents must be proud.
When I was in elementary school in China, one of my class friend always talked about his big brother, who is the Second Mate ( 二副 ) on a merchant ship. He often talked about his big brother traveled to different countries, well known cities ... at that time China did not have many connections of any kind with the world, his stories inspired a lot of imaginations. One time, he brought a Japanese tape recorder to class, we were all amazed by the thing and he told us his brother bought it in Holland.
Such a good young man. His parents are very proud of him. 😃
That is one hell of a responsibility..
Pretty cool to see how serious these cadets take each task👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Napaka ganda ng pagka Sabi niyo po sir yung " perfect timing at having a patience" 🌱 5 years na po ako graduate ng BSMT Hindi pa po ako naka sampa sana soon Perfect timing

Congratulations to the young man who took over has 3rd Mate - well done son, have a long and interesting life at sea. I came ashore back in 2000 after some 37 years at sea on various ships, have fun!
Great advice Chief. After a career of 30 years in retail management that advice applies to more than just shipping. Safe travels.
Completed my day once again.. God bless always Chief!
I love the measured and soothing rhythm of the Chief's voice. I'll bet he is a good boss.
Nicely done, salamat po!
When I was a Naval officer in the 70s - 80s, we'd laugh at how ratty the merchant ships were, and how it seemed no one was on watch. Several times if we hadn't changed course we'd have collided with a merchant most likely on "autopilot," at least that's what it seemed like.
Nowadays, the merchant fleet has so many beautiful ships, such as the ones you show. And the level of professionalism appears higher than what I experienced in the military. Not a lot, but some.
Thanks for this reminder of sea life and a look inside what the merchant marine is like in modern times.
I just discovered your Channel
I am a retired Merchant Seaman after a 40 year career I retired October 30th 2019 I really love your channel
Chief, Thanks for showing the 3rd Officer (Mate) position as well as background information and, in part: responsibility, training, experience, timing, flexibility and... patience. Best wishes to you, JR, and the officers and crew. Keith

Excellent advice you give Chief. Applicable to just about everything we do in our working careers in most industries. Well done. Thank you.

Goood job sir. You deserve it
Thanks for this video . My Uncle William was a third mate on a US merchant marine ship during World war 2. Unfortunately his oil tanker was sunk by a German submarine in the north Atlantic with all hands lost. I wondered what he did on his ship.
Just a cadet learning to be officer, great knowledge
Brilliant as always. Keep them coming Chief.
Great video. I sent it to my 20yo nephew. He's still dreaming and doesn't understand that even when you're qualified, it doesn't mean you're going to get the job.
Another GREAT video! What a fine young man, he will go far, the right attitude and temperment along with a lot of drive. He is endowed with "Sticktoitiveness" keep at it and NEVER give up! Thanks again Chief for another inspiring, interesting and uplifting video.
