    If your bottom bolts are real bad i used a short heavy metal carbon tooth blade (hot knife through butter) in the sawzall. I removed top bolts then cut manifold in the middle between ports. I was able to tap the pieces of manifold to spin out of the way to access bottom studs much easier. ( didn't have access to cutting torch and had limited shop tools) ..
    I'm in the rust belt so every bolt was heated and sprayed cool on the old 97, managed to get them all backed out but 1 that was already broke. ... Don't forget your bag of cuss words lol.

      Heating them with a torch could of helped, but maybe not.

    Great video man , They really don't give you much room to work in there . Have a great weekend Thomas. 👍😀 1st comment and 1st like woo hoo.

      Yeah the engineers don't care if you have room to fix it, they don't have to work on it.

    SO curious how many hours total do you think this job took? I have to replace mine and I'm still on the fence if I want o tackle it :) Also great video on the process!

      It all depends on how rusty the nuts are. If it looks as bad as mine looked in my other video, pay someone. =)

    Just wondering, what would be the effect of driving this truck with not catiylac converter or muffler , coming straight from manifold , no straight pipe

    • @thomasfixit7931

      Probably a check engine light and loud noises.

    Hey man I have a 2006 F-150 XLT 5.4...shop I go to said it’ll cost 2500 because they have to take out the engine to get to it. Does that sound like BS?

      I would get an estimate somewhere else. You can probably get an estimate over the phone, try Firestone.

    Where did you get your exhaust manifold?

    • @thomasfixit7931
      @thomasfixit7931  4 года назад +1

      Advance Auto Parts, that finish comes off, it already has a rusty look. Should last the life of the truck though, it has 285,000 miles on the original motor. I bought it new and it has served me well.

    I mean. In THEORY it doesn't seem like too difficult of a job with my tools. But damn am I not looking forward to seeing what fresh rusted hell awaits me when i got to try and replace mine. Also, would a high temp coating of some kind assist with rust prevention on these manifolds? Or with the truck really being this old, is it even worth preventing the rust?

    • @thomasfixit7931
      @thomasfixit7931  4 года назад

      Rust on old trucks are usually really bad. If you replace, hopefully you only have to do it once. That was the factory manifold with over 280k miles on it.

    • @Nate.b6
      @Nate.b6 4 года назад

      Thomas Fix It mine is from factory with 220k on it right now. The rust is obviously bad but would you recommend sending the truck in to have heads resurfaced? It hasnt had the leak very long.

    What size tap did you use?

  • @reaperasylum
    @reaperasylum 2 года назад

    Bruh I did that but I drilled out the flanges on both sides and ran grade 8 bolts and lock washers instead and used manifold bolts instead of studs just so that if it happens again it'll be super easy next time. Good job though
