1. Xanadu 2. The Fountain of Lamneth 3. 2112 4. Cignus X-1/Hemispheres 5. Bastille Day 6. The Necromancer 7. Limelight 8. The Trees 9. Working Man 10. La Villa Strangiato Rush has so many great songs whittling it down to ten is hard. All the ones on your list I also like. My own list is likely to change at some point depending on my mood or which songs I've listened to most recently.
Pete, you rock! Top 10: 1. Red Barchetta 2. Subdivisions 3. Natural Science 4. 2112 5. The Analog Kid 6. The Trees 7. The Spirit Of Radio 8. Time Stand Still 9. Limelight 10. Dreamline The next 10: 11. Vital Signs 12. Force Ten 13. The Pass 14. Roll The Bones 15. Driven 16. Closer To The Heart 17. Tom Sawyer 18. Animate 19. Red Sector A 20. Double Agent R.I.P. Neil.
Excellent list. RUSH are my top band of all time, so although I have a clear 1 through 3 the next 7 can and do fluctuate all the time. 10. Beneath, Between, Behind 09. Marathon 08. Jacob's Ladder 07. Animate 06. YYZ 05. Free Will 04. Red Barchetta 03. By-Tor and the Snowdog 02. La Villa Strangiatto 01. Xanadu Honoraries: Finding My Way, In The End, Natural Science, The Fear Trilogy, Show Don't Tell, The Pass, Bastille Day, and about 250 other songs.
Got a feeling William that, like me, you may be from the older generation. Hence, you fit in No 10. So I'm hip with your top 5. Camera Eye needs a place up there too, witness the Cleveland Live version. Something For Nothing rarely gets a look in and yet it epitomizes the Rush creed.
And about 250 songs :)) I agree, By-Tor... nice song, beautiful bass play as always... I used to love Animate, but I overplayed the song, respect your pick
1. The Camera Eye 2. Jacob's Ladder 3. Xanadu 4. The Weapon 5. Main Monkey Business 6. Lakeside Park 7. 2112 Suite 8. Red Sector A 9. Leave That Thing Alone 10. Hemispheres Suite
Some of my favorites are: YYZ, Subdivisions, Fly By Night, Xanadu, The Camera Eye, 2112, The Spirit of Radio. That's all for now. I have a lot to listen to still. Haven't checked out all of their records yet.
1. Xanadu 2. Byr Tor And The Snow Dog 3. La Villa Strangiato 4. 2112 5. Hemispheres 6 Jacobs Ladder 7. Losing It 8. The Fountain Of Lamneth 9. Natural Science 10. Marathon
@Daniel Malec its all about whats my favorite rather then best, people have different taste in music and nothing is set in stone for what is best estra. In my mind i think Losing It is a very underated song from that album and deserved more praise.
Nice list, Pete. Mine: 10. Red Barchetta 9. Freewill 8. Anthem 7. Analog Kid 6. Xanadu 5. A Farewell to Kings 4. La Villa Starangiato 3. The Camera Eye 2. Natural Science 1. Hemispheres
Pete, You are Awesome for doing this page! And thank you for doing everything that you do! My FAVE RUSH.. This took some contemplating.. 10. Red Sector A 9. Enemy Within 8. 2112 Suite 7. Trees 6. Red Barchetta 5.YYZ 4. Cygnus X-1 3. Xanadu 2. Natural Science 1. Subdivisions! What a Wonderful Band!
Thank you and God bless you Pete. I’m from a generation before you. That great Woodstock era. Favorite bands are Tull, Procul Harum, Airplane Doors , etc. , saw Zeppelin at the Fillmore perform their entire first album just before it was released in 1969. Was just 17! Love heavy .. love Sabbath. This is to put my comments in perspective. I always kind of liked Rush. Saw this review of yours today. How did I miss La Villa Strangius ( forgive if my spelling is off) I just listened to it for about the 10 th time. It turns me into a goosebump and tears. Not only my favorite Rush; one of the best pieces of music I’ve ever heard. And I have heard a lot. And now realize there may be still a lot more. As Procul Harum sang “ Still there will be more”
Rush is way hard because of all of the phases they went through. But here it goes: 1. 2112 2. Distant Early Warning 3. The Trees 4. Subdivisions 5. By-Tor and the Snow Dog 6. Time Stands Still 7. Xanadu 8. Tom Sawyer 9. Cygnus X-1 Book II 10. Sweet Miracle HMs: Mission Anthem Closer to the Heart Lessons Dreamline The Analog Kid Far Cry Cygnus X-1 Circumstances Man, I could go on…
Xanadu, Subdivisions, Cygnus X-1: Hemispheres and the Voyage, La Villa Strangiato, Red Barchetta, YYZ, Anthem, 2112, Passage to Bangkok, Tom Sawyer... idk, so many My favourite phase is definitely from 2112 to Signals, both included. All the albums in this era are so solid and super original and incredible for me.
1.Color of Right (Test for Echo) 2.Limelight (Moving Pictures) 3. Red Barrchetta (Moving Pictures) 4.2112 (2112) 5.Farewell to the Kings (Farewell to the Kings) 6.Spirit of Raidio (Perminit Waves) 7.Freewill (Perminit Waves) 8.Working Man (Rush) 9.Lavilla Strangiato (Hemispheres) 10.Faithless (Snake and Arrows)

Here is my list: 21 Jacob's Ladder 20 After Image 19 Closer to the Heart 18 Mystic Rhythms 17 Madrigal 16 Red Sector A 15 Working Man 14 Tom Sawyer 13 Subdivisions 12 Countdown 11 Different Strings 10 Spirit of Radio 9 Anthem 8 Losing It 7 Natural Science 6 La Villa Strangiato ( Pink Pop) 5 In the End 4 Farewell to Kings 3 Vital Signs 2 Xanadu ( Exit Stage Left ) 1 Witch Hunt
Wow, witch hunt is weird no. 1, but it’d funny because out of every Rush song, (not live) both your top 2 go the longest without hitting the snare drum
Been listening to RUSH since '81. I got into them with Exit...Stage Left. Saw them many times. They are probably my favorite band. (The Who, Pink Floyd & Genesis float around the top spot as well). Very hard to pick as I truly enjoy all their albums. 1. La Villa Strangiato 2. Middletown Dreams 3. Available Light 4. Ghost Rider 5. Red Barchetta 6. Xanadu 7. Losing It 8. By-Tor and the Snow Dog 9. Natural Science 10. The Camera Eye HM.... Finding My Way, Anthem, Fly By Night, Bastille Day, Lakeside Park, 2112, A Passage To Bangkok, Cygnus I & II, Freewill, Jacob's Ladder, Limelight, Subdivisions, Analog Kid, Red Sector A, Between The Wheels, The Big Money, Marathon, Territories, Force Ten, Lock & Key, Show Don't Tell, Chain Lightning, Bravado, Ghost Of A Chance, Driven, Time & Motion, Ceiling Unlimited, Nocturne, Armor & Sword, Caravan, Headlong Flight. ;-)
1. Tom Sawyer - never gets old sentimental value also 2. Limelight 3. Xanadu 4. Red Barchetta 5. Fly By Night 6. Anthem 7. Working Man 8. 2112 9. Farewell to Kings 10. YYZ
10 A Farewell to Kings....9 YYZ....8 Necromancer....7 Freewill....6 By Tor and the Snow Dog....5 Cygnus X 1 .....4 2112...3 Hemispheres....2 Xanadu....1 La Villa Strangiato
@@brucefranklin6295 it is the most radio friendly song on my list for sure. I love the chords in the pre chorus , which sound like a leftover/afterthought of Hemispheres. The guitar solo is pretty kick ass too !
It was 40 years ago tomorrow night when Rush rocked the Gardens London, Ontario, Canada. I was a teen -aged hard rocker who was blown away by their musicianship. I knew right then, Rush were the real thing and would forever travel the world. It was a proud Canadian moment actually. Ever since, I have followed Rush far and faithfully thru all changes and phases. Bless em. In honor of our gifted and beloved nerds...and that amazing show four decades ago, here's my fave Rush songs. Thanx. :) 1/ La Villa Strangiato 2/ Xanadu 3/ Cygnus x-1 Book 2 - Hemispheres 4/ Natural Science 5/ Overture/Temples of Syrinx 6/ Limelight 7/ The Necromancer 8/ Witch Hunt 9/ Bytor and the Snow Dog 10/ Mission )O(
10. Cold Fire 9. Between The Wheels 8. Losing It 7. La Villa Stangiato 6. Afterimage 5. The Camera Eye 4. The Pass 3. Red Sector A 2. The Analog Kid 1. Subdivisions
Best band in the world. I got a chance to meet Geddy Lee during his book tour and he was amazing. My top 10 Rush songs would go like this 1. Bravado 2. Available Light 3. Between The Wheels 4. Faithless 5. Witch Hunt 6. Wish Them Well 7. A Farewell To Kings 8. Natural Science 9. Virtuality 10. La Villa Strangiato
I recently did a top 20 for a friend. Here it is 1-20... 2112 Spirit of the Radio Tom Sawyer Anthem Trees (Live) Limelight Witch Hunt Jacob's Ladder La Villa Strangiato Subdivisions Roll The Bones Working Man Free Will Closer To The Heart (Live) Show Don't Tell The Big Money Finding My Way A Passage To Bangkok Available Light Vital Signs I know you are not thrilled with Presto, but I really like it. To me it was the first time Alex came back. Available Light is my favorite from that album. It is synth heavy, but I love its progginess and the melody and words. I know my Rush songs are a little more traditional popular favorites, but I love how we both have Witch Hunt in the top 10. Great song!
My top 10 (as of December 3, 2018) 10: The Way The Wind Blows (Snakes And Arrows) 9: The Pass (Presto) 8: Kid Gloves (Grace Under Pressure) 7: Middletown Dreams (Power Windows) 6: Natural Science (Permanent Waves) 5: Vital Signs (Moving Pictures) 4: The Fountain Of Lamneth (Caress Of Steel) 3: Xanadu (A Farewell To Kings) 2: 2112 (2112) 1: Hemispheres (Hemispheres) Honourable Mentions, one per album Rush: Here Again Fly By Night: Anthem Caress Of Steel: Lakeside Park 2112: Something For Nothing A Farewell To Kings: Cinderella Man Hemispheres: Circumstances Permanent Waves: Entre Nous Moving Pictures: The Camera Eye Signals: Digital Man Grace Under Pressure: The Enemy Within Power Windows: Manhattan Project Hold Your Fire: Mission Presto: Presto Roll The Bones: Bravado Counterparts: Animate Test For Echo: Resist Vapour Trails: Earthshine Snakes And Arrows: Malignant Narcissism Clockwork Angels: The Garden
So, so late to this. Love Rush to pieces. They were my very first entry into the world of progressive rock. Still can't believe the news I heard last month. Really hurts. Funny thing, I was initially introduced to Rush through their '80s and '90s stuff. Loved it, of course. The proggier '70s stuff crossed my path a few years down the line, and it changed...everything. I own all their studio stuff, minus Vapor Trails, Snakes and Arrows, Clockwork Angels, and the EP of covers they did. Love all of it, though I love the '70s and '80s stuff the most. This is hard. I know my absolute #1 favorite song from Rush; it pretty much hit (and hypnotized) me the first time I ever heard it. The rest of the songs on this roughly-made list are not in any particular order: 10. Bastille Day 9. Distant Early Warning 8. Beneath, Between and Behind 7. The Spirit of Radio 6. La Villa Strangiato 5. Cygnus X-1: Book One 4. Time Stand Still 3. The Analog Kid 2. 2112 title track/suite 1. Xanadu (absolutely, Pete!) WAY too many honorable mentions...
Very hard to do a top 10 with this band so much good stuff, stretching 40 plus years. But here goes 1. Cygnus x1 2. Xanadu 3. Mystic Rhythms 4 Analog Kid 5 Closer To the Heart 6 Time Stands still 7 The Trees 8 Circumstances 9 2112 10 What your doing
You're the only person who put Mystic Rhythms on your list - good stuff ! Here is my list: 20 After Image 19 Closer to the Heart 18 Mystic Rhythms 17 Madrigal 16 Red Sector A 15 Working Man 14 Tom Sawyer 13 Subdivisions 12 Countdown 11 Different Strings 10 Spirit of Radio 9 Anthem 8 Losing It 7 Natural Science 6 La Villa Strangiato ( Pink Pop) 5 In the End 4 Farewell to Kings 3 Vital Signs 2 Xanadu ( Exit Stage Left ) 1 Witch Hunt
Really Smart for some reason I read these lists... I was reading a rolling stone article ranking all 160 odd rush songs. Witch hunt was ranked in the 60s I think.... in the description it was described as the weakest song on a moving pictures. I stopped reading then and there.
10. Cinderella Man 9. Fountain of Lamneth 8. Circumstances 7. Xanadu 6. By-Tor & Snow Dog 5. Analog Kid 4. Camera Eye 3. Natural Science 2. 2112 1. Cygnus X1 Book II Too many honorable mentions to list. Love the lists! Keep ‘em coming!
So many great songs to choose from. My personal favourite is actually (1) 'Middletown Dreams' ! I also love the live versions from All the World's a Stage of (2) Lakeside Park and (3) In the End. (4) Red Barchetta is another favourite as well as (5) Mystic Rhythms .
10. Circumstances 09. 2112 08. Hemispheres 07. The Necromancer 06. Xanadu 05. Working Man 04. La Villa Strangiato 03. Subdivisions 02. Anthem 01. Limelight
I love all Rush but my top 10 1 Cygnus X-1 2 Fountain of Lamneth 3 Jacobs Ladder 4 Hemispheres 5 Xanadu 6 Camera Eye 7 Natural Science 8 Between the Wheels 9 Countdown 10 2112
Every dog should get their due: John Rutsey's drumming on Working Man is crisp and to the fore. Great song indeed. But you nailed it sir with Xanadu! About a third of the way thru Neil Peart tosses in that eight-beat fill ENTIRELY off his snare. I was hooked. Thank you for all your work.
Rush is my all time favourite band, so creating a top 10 list was a very tough job. I still managed to do it, so here's my opinion! 10. Tom Sawyer 9. The Garden 8. YYZ 7. The Camera Eye 6. The Spirit Of Radio 5. 2112 4. Freewill 3. Subdivisions 2. The Anarchist HM: The Fountain Of Lamneth, Natural Science, The Enemy Within, Far Cry, Clockwork Angels. 1. Xanadu
1) Mystic Rhythms (particularly the R30 Version, Geddy's vocal. Just superb) 2) Scars 3) Tai Shan (I love travel and Asian cultures and such, always loved this song. I know it's a hugely hated one but it's a big deal to me. HYF was my very first Rush album) 4) Resist (particularly the Rush in Rio stripped down performance, beyond perfect lyrics. It's Neil, what else can you expect?) 5) Alien Shore 6) red lenses 7) Cut To The Chase (THAT HIGH PITCHED SQUEAL AT 2 : 44 ALEX DOES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SOLO! MOTHER OF GOD, GREATEST TONE AND THING I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE!!!) 8) Making Memories 9) Heresy 10) The Analog Kid
You are correct: any RUSH ‘favorites’ list will change often! I cant do it because I love all of their music but there are a few Rush songs that are special for me- they hit that nerve , they never get old. In no order: 1)Ghost Of A Chance 2)Earthshine 3)Limelight 4)Fly By Night R.I.P. N.P.
01. Xanadu 02. Dreamline 03. Ghost of a Chance 04. Available Light O5. The Garden 06. Mystic Rhythms 07. Jacob’s Ladder 08. The Camera Eye 09. Losing It 10. Faithless
Here's a list: 1. Subdivisions 2. Countdown 3. The Pass 4. The Camera Eye 5. Red Barchetta 6. The Spirit of Radio 7. The Analog Kid 8. Entre Nous 9. Time Stand Still 10. Cygnus X-1 Book II
I think you'll appreciate this newly released cut: 💥THE GIRL WHO LISTENED TO RUSH💥 From the back of the stadium She’s easy to see Standing up at the stage In her Starman tee From Anthem to Limelight To YYZ She’s the girl who listened to Rush And all of the rockers And all of the heshers Well they dreamed of the day That they might get her And drive her away In a Red Barchetta She’s the girl who listened to Rush Philosophers and ploughmen They can’t resist her call They cannot choose Not to decide So they've got no choice at all They've gotta love her No she doesn’t say "Pert" And she doesn’t say "Part" Yeah, she knows it’s "Neil Peert" ‘Cause he’s close to her heart Say a prayer for John Rutsey He was there at the start She’s the girl who listened to Rush Philosophers and ploughmen They can’t resist her call They cannot choose Not to decide So they've got no choice at all They've gotta love her Why don’t girls ever listen to Rush? Excited to dig in!
New watcher to your channel and just loving the lists and wealth of amazing band knowledge. Had to add my list and as everyone points out, tough to narrow it down: 10 Freeze(part 4 of fear) 9 Grand Designs 8 The Pass 7 Freewill 6 Countdown 5 Limelight 4 Cygnus X1 3 Different Strings 2 Natural Science 1 Cygnus X1 Book 2 HM goes to everything else! Ok these: 2112 Fly by Night Spirit of Radio Subdivisions By Tor and the Snow Dog La Villa Strangiato Entre Nous Vital Signs Between the Wheels The Camera Eye The Garden The Bravest Face Tom Sawyer Xanadu Lakeside Park The Necromancer Fountain of Lamneth Middletown Dreams Bravado Carnies
My list changes constantly, and since I live a few minutes from Lakeside Park in St Catharines, that song's there by default. My first big concert was 1988 with Rush at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Hold Your Fire was the tour, Time Stand Still was the single. It sneaks in my list sometimes. First exposure was my brother's Moon copy of the debut (given away at local Woolco!), and All The World's A Stage on my aunt's 8-track. Anything from those too.
@@grantkgoacher What do you think of my List ? How would you rank them ? 20 After Image 19 Closer to the Heart 18 Mystic Rhythms 17 Madrigal 16 Red Sector A 15 Working Man 14 Tom Sawyer 13 Subdivisions 12 Countdown 11 Different Strings 10 Spirit of Radio 9 Anthem 8 Losing It 7 Natural Science 6 La Villa Strangiato ( Pink Pop) 5 In the End 4 Farewell to Kings 3 Vital Signs 2 Xanadu ( Exit Stage Left ) 1 Witch Hunt
I'm very glad to see The Necromancer on this list. I've always loved the song and it definitely never gets the kind of credit it deserves, mostly due to the stigma surrounding the album and the fact that it nearly killed the band's career.
1. Xanadu (A Farewell to Kings) 2. Red Barchetta (Moving Pictures) 3. La Villa Strangiato (Hemispheres) 4. 2112 (2112) 5. Spirit of Radio (Permanent Waves) 6. Natural Science (Permanent Waves) 7. Anthem (Fly by Night) 8. Bastille Day (Caress of Steel) 9. Something for Nothing (2112) 10 Freewill (Permanent Waves) HM: The Camera Eye (Moving Pictures) Cygnus X-1 Book 1 (A Farewell to KIngs) Cygnus X-1 Book 2 (Hemispheres) Working Man (Rush) Lakeside Park (Caress of Steel) Cinderella Man (A Farewell to Kings) Jacob's Ladder (Permanent Waves) The Weapon (Signals) Tom Sawyer and Limelight (Moving Pictures) be Top 10 but overplayed
Great list! Natural science, Anthem and Xanadu would make my list also. I love all eras of Rush but my sweet spot is with Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres.
1. Limelight 2. Fly by night 3. What your doing 4. Spirit of radio 5. camera eye 6. closer to the heart 7. working man 8. Tom Sawyer 9. freewill 10. Subdivisions
Almost every Rush song is in my fave top 10, equal to each other. It’s easier to do a top 10 of WORST songs as there are probably only around 10 of those anyway, and most of them are on Presto and Vapor Trails
10. YYZ 9. Twilight zone 8. Take a Friend 7. In The End 6. 2112, 5. Limelight 4. Lakeside Park 3. Working Man 2. The necromancer #1 Closer to the Heart
Nice list Pete, I know that, it changes all the time, so many great songs... :-) How is it today? :)) My list: 10. Headlong Flight 9. Countdown 8. Turn The Page 7. In The End 6. Best I Can 5. Cut To The Chase 4. Something For Nothing 3. Subdivisions 2. Red Barchetta 1. Natural Science
1. Limelight (Neil's lyrics! And his drum fill to end the song, wow!) 2. 2112 (The Temples of Syrinx made be a fan of this band) 3. Subdivisions 4. Twilight Zone (My fav. t.v. show, love this song) 5. A Passage to Bangkok 6. Spirit of the Radio 7. Animate 8. Closer to the Heart 9. Finding My Way 10. One Little Victory (Came out at a great time in my life)
Sidebar: Your comment about having heard Tom Sawyer enough made me think about the Stones' Can't You Hear Me Knocking, which I've also heard a million times, and it feels just as fresh and just as powerful for me today (12/30/2023) as it did over 50 years ago. I'm just getting into Rush, and don't know most of your Top 10. I know mostly Moving Pictures' songs, and think they are all great, so I have a lot to look forward to! I wonder how many will still be in my Top 10 in another 50 years.
Mine is 1. Hemispheres 2. Xanadu 3. La villa strangiato 4. Spirit of radio 5. Freewill 6. Fly by night 7. 2112 8. Yyz 9. Time stand still 10. Subdivisions
My Rush top ten: 10. Mystic Rhythms 9. The Body Electric 8. 2112 7. Xanadu 6. La Villa Strangiato 5. The Spirit Of Radio 4. Limelight 3. YYZ 2. Red Barchetta 1. I am a bit younger and newer fan to the band, so my list might include a few surprises lol 1. 2112 2. Limelight 3. Xanadu 4. Freewill 5. Afterimage 6. Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres 7. The Big Money 8. Anthem 9. Animate 10. BU2B
Really Smart Great list! Yeah I know all of those songs, I have listened to all of their studio albums and I am a huge fan so I know everything from there. I just mentioned that I am younger and newer because I don’t have a personal affinity with their early period, hence why some songs from 80s and beyond appear
Very solid list! For me, there's no objective top 10 for Rush. Any ten songs of theirs could be Top 10 worthy for me. Here are my ten personal favorites: 10. Cygnus X-1 Book One - The Voyage 9. Mystic Rhythms 8. The Trees 7. The Spirit Of Radio 6. The Camera Eye 5. By-Tor And The Snow Dog 4. The Necromancer 3. Jacob's Ladder 2. Beneath, Between & Behind 1. La Villa Strangiato
SO MANY amazing tracks!! It's hard to pick only 10. In no super real order: 10. Anthem 9. Fly by Night 8. 2112 7. Closer to the Heart 6. Cygnus X-1 Book 1 5. Cygnus X-1 Book 2 4. Limelight 3. Subdivisions 2. By-Tor and the Snow Dog 1. Workin' Them Angels
Rush is my favorite band of all time. I saw the band 125 times between 1982 - 2015 until their retirement. Although I never listen to them anymore, burnt out on them - discovering other artists at the moment. Always hard to pick their top 10 songs as they have written so many epic, classic and excellent pop songs. My fandom definitely favors the 70s and 80's era - in my opinion Rush's peak years in songwriting was '75 - '82. My first two songs are set in stone - Limelight and Subdivisions are by far the greatest songs they ever wrote - nothing else comes even close. That said, my 3 - 10 can change depending on my mood or when you ask me at any given moment. 1. Limelight (Moving Pictures) 2. Subdivisions (Signals) ----------------------------------- 3. Xanadu (A Farewell to Kings) 4. Natural Science (Permanent Waves) 5. The Necromancer (Caress of Steel) 6. The Analog Kid (Signals) 7. Witch Hunt (Moving Pictures) 8. Cygnus X1 (A Farewell to Kings) 9. Between The Wheels (Grace Under Pressure) 10. 2112 (2112)
My Top 10 1-Something For Nothing 2-Distant Early Warning 3-La Villa Strangiato 4-What You’re Doing 5-Finding My Way 6-Lakeside Park 7-In The End 8-Cygnus X-1 9-The Trees 10-Anthem
1 .La Villa Strangiato 2. Natural Science 3. Mission 4. Subdivisions 5. YYZ 6. Limelight 7. Xanadu 8. Working Man 9. Freewill 10 Leave that thing alone. Kept all the real long epics out. Like everyone says, depends what day it is or mood, I listen to it all! No order, just songs of Rush, ask me tomorrow and i probably will chose 10 different
Another fun top 10 list from Pete. Here are my Top 10: 1. 2112 2. Xanadu 3. Cygnus X-1 (Book II Hemispheres) 4. The Fountain Of Lamneth 5. Anthem 6. Jacob's Ladder 7. La Villa Strangiato 8. Natural Science 9. Closer to the Heart 10. YYZ

The Camera Eye Honorable mentions In the mood, Fly by Night, Beneath between and behind, By-tor and the snow dog, Bastille day, I think I’m going bald, lakeside park, A Passage to Bangkok, Xanadu, Closer to heart, Circumstances, Freewill, Entre Nous, Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Red Barchetta, Subdivisions, The Analog Kid, New World Man, Chemistry, Distance Early Warning, Big Money, Mystic Rhythms, Time Stand stills, Stick it out, Leave that thing alone, Caravan
I just don't understand why Power Windows doesn't get any love on any top lists. Another youtuber released his top ten list today and called it "cheesy". Besides the unbelievably transparent and still contemporary sounding production by Peter Collins, they are at an all time musical high on this record if you listen closely to the details. Don't be fooled because there are no ten minute epics on it. Would have been my number one. But your choices are also great... hard to find anything really crappy in their catalog.
I've tried, for years and years and years...like I said, I don't DISLIKE Power Windows and Hold Your Fire, but as you can see by my picks, you can tell how I like my Rush. I find those albums very 'light', and not my favorites by any means, but I don't dislike them.
1. The Spirit Of Radio 2. 2112 3. Tom Sawyer 4. Working Man 5. The Trees 6. Time Stand Still 7. A Passage To Bangkok 8. Marathon 9. Subdivisions 10. Limelight
I agree. I don't why people don't mention The song Here Again it is a very good song with a killer guitar solo by Alex . It's just a good deep cut to me.
It’s interesting I think that Rush is one of those bands which became much better “song” writers later in their careers (genesis being another). I grew up with early Rush but I have to give credit to great songwriting 1. Time stand still..... one of the only songs to explore the transient nature of life... astonishing poetic and lyrical capture of one part of being human.... never been done better... GENIUS 2. Nobody’s Hero Again, flawless vignette into the nature of heroism. 3. Losing it.....Hemingway, and everyone who ever faded away 4. Red sector A ..... choked me up every time. 5 distant early warning.....pertinent 6. Xanadu..... drug addiction expressed through metaphor!!! Brilliant 7. A farewell to kings oh that bass tone!! 8. 2112 .......
10. The Speed of Love 9. Lock and Key 8. Emotion Detector 7. Entre Nous 6. Limelight 5. Ghost of a Chance 4. La Villa Strangiato 3. Xanadu 2. Digital Man 1. Subdivisions These are really flexible to be honest, so ones I really wanted to put but just had to decide against would be: Finding My Way, Fly By Night, Anthem, Superconductor, Red Sector A, Countdown, The Big Money, Natural Science, and The Camera Eye.
Tough to pick 10: 1. 2112 2. The Necromancer 3. Xanadu 4. La Villa Strangiato (Live:Exit Stage Left version) 5. By-Tor & the Snow Dog 6. The Trees 7. Freewill 8. Camera Eye 9. Subdivisions 10. Red Sector A Total agreement with you Pete on the guitar solos on all the above. Lyrics on Necromancer make it a fav, same with 2112. Complexities on Xanadu, depth of Trees, Camera Eye; New direction alienated some fans with Subdivisions and Red Sector A, but really pulled off a major transformation most bands never survive.
1. Xanadu
2. The Fountain of Lamneth
3. 2112
4. Cignus X-1/Hemispheres
5. Bastille Day
6. The Necromancer
7. Limelight
8. The Trees
9. Working Man
10. La Villa Strangiato
Rush has so many great songs whittling it down to ten is hard. All the ones on your list I also like. My own list is likely to change at some point depending on my mood or which songs I've listened to most recently.
Nice list , i 'd only replace ' The Trees ' with ' Afterimage ' from Grace Under Pressure . . .
#5 for sure !
Yup. Good call
Only one song from Moving Pictures?
Lot of love for Caress of Steel, I like it

07. Animate
06. YYZ
05. Free Will
04. Red Barchetta

01. Xanadu
Honoraries: Finding My Way, In The End, Natural Science, The Fear Trilogy, Show Don't Tell, The Pass, Bastille Day, and about 250 other songs.
John Harvey The Camera Eye and Something For Nothing are underrated imo, just to say the least
And about 250 songs :)) I agree, By-Tor... nice song, beautiful bass play as always... I used to love Animate, but I overplayed the song, respect your pick
I was born on Bastille Day. Old Rush songs like certain smells bring back such great memories. Loving your shows! ✌
Here are 5 of my faves ever
Xanadu
Cygnus X - 1 both Book 1 and Book 2
La Villa Strangiato
The Fountain of Lamneth
Just a few
1. The Camera Eye

Favorite list i've read in the comments. Thumbs up!
I very much agree with The Camera Eye. Just fab.
Camera Eye... YES! The live version from Cleveland is first class.
The Camera Eye and Jacob’s Ladder some of the most underrated songs in their catalog
Some of my favorites are: YYZ, Subdivisions, Fly By Night, Xanadu, The Camera Eye, 2112, The Spirit of Radio. That's all for now. I have a lot to listen to still. Haven't checked out all of their records yet.
1. Xanadu
2. Byr Tor And The Snow Dog
3. La Villa Strangiato
4. 2112
5. Hemispheres
6 Jacobs Ladder
7. Losing It
8. The Fountain Of Lamneth
9. Natural Science
10. Marathon
Great to see By-Tor and the Snow Dog up near the top.
@Daniel Malec its all about whats my favorite rather then best, people have different taste in music and nothing is set in stone for what is best estra. In my mind i think Losing It is a very underated song from that album and deserved more praise.
Nice list, Pete. Mine:
10. Red Barchetta
9. Freewill
8. Anthem
7. Analog Kid
6. Xanadu
5. A Farewell to Kings
4. La Villa Starangiato
3. The Camera Eye
2. Natural Science
1. Hemispheres
Yay!!! So glad you included "Red Barchetta"!!
Amazing list
RIP Neil Peart
One of the greatest bands to ever exist. Three incredibly talented gentlemen.
Analog Kid - Rush sonic masterpiece that is underappreciated and timeless.
Just barely missed my top 10. Highly underrated song.
Dreamlike red barrachetta and bravado are great songs ! I will work on my list !
Pete, You are Awesome for doing this page! And thank you for doing everything that you do!

What a Wonderful Band!
One of my faves was always Dreamline, especially live with all the lasers going!
great video, great discussion, brings back memories (sweet memories....flashing very quickly by....)
Great list..... spirit of radio
Great list, Pete! I'm not sure I could do it, but mine would be mostly 70's stuff as well.
How did I miss La Villa Strangius ( forgive if my spelling is off)
I just listened to it for about the 10 th time. It turns me into a goosebump and tears. Not only my favorite Rush; one of the best pieces of music I’ve ever heard. And I have heard a lot.
And now realize there may be still a lot more.
As Procul Harum sang “ Still there will be more”
This is the best comments list of lists for Rush. Nice!
Rush is way hard because of all of the phases they went through. But here it goes:
1. 2112
2. Distant Early Warning
3. The Trees
4. Subdivisions
5. By-Tor and the Snow Dog
6. Time Stands Still
7. Xanadu
8. Tom Sawyer
9. Cygnus X-1 Book II
10. Sweet Miracle
HMs:
Mission
Anthem
Closer to the Heart
Lessons
Dreamline
The Analog Kid
Far Cry
Cygnus X-1
Circumstances
Man, I could go on…
Personally I hate Sweet miracle, but great list anyway
No Marathon?
Daniel Malec I don’t hate the meaning of the song, it’s the way he says surface that bugs me
Sweet Miracle is a song that made me break down and cry out loud. Once...just once.
Awesome selection, my friend. Yep, you can't go wrong with any selection. So many great tunes.
Thank you Pete thank you. I never thought the first album sounded like Zep and Im tired of everyone saying it.
1. Necromancer
2. Tom Sawyer
3. Here again
4. Earth Shine
5. Working them Angel's
6. Freewill
7. Anthem
8. Superconductor

10. Subdivisions
Xanadu, Subdivisions, Cygnus X-1: Hemispheres and the Voyage, La Villa Strangiato, Red Barchetta, YYZ, Anthem, 2112, Passage to Bangkok, Tom Sawyer... idk, so many
My favourite phase is definitely from 2112 to Signals, both included. All the albums in this era are so solid and super original and incredible for me.
Nice pick :-)
100% agree just add grace under pressure and that's the golden era of rush
1.Color of Right (Test for Echo)

1. Xanadu
2. La villa strangiato
3. Jacobs ladder
4. A farewell to kings
5. In the end

7 Natural Science
6 La Villa Strangiato ( Pink Pop)
5 In the End
4 Farewell to Kings
3 Vital Signs
2 Xanadu ( Exit Stage Left )
1 Witch Hunt
Wow, witch hunt is weird no. 1, but it’d funny because out of every Rush song, (not live) both your top 2 go the longest without hitting the snare drum
@@redpig6878 But 4 of your top 5 are very high up my list which makes it by far the best list I've seen
Been listening to RUSH since '81. I got into them with Exit...Stage Left. Saw them many times. They are probably my favorite band. (The Who, Pink Floyd & Genesis float around the top spot as well). Very hard to pick as I truly enjoy all their albums.
1. La Villa Strangiato
2. Middletown Dreams

4. Ghost Rider
5. Red Barchetta
6. Xanadu

5. Fly By Night
6. Anthem
7. Working Man
8. 2112

10 A Farewell to Kings....9 YYZ....8 Necromancer....7 Freewill....6 By Tor and the Snow Dog....5 Cygnus X 1 .....4 2112...3 Hemispheres....2 Xanadu....1 La Villa Strangiato
Might like to replace Freewill with one of a number of older songs, like Anthem or Passage to Bangkok,etc...,but I am sold on the rest of your list!
@@brucefranklin6295 it is the most radio friendly song on my list for sure. I love the chords in the pre chorus , which sound like a leftover/afterthought of Hemispheres. The guitar solo is pretty kick ass too !
@@lamnuck Don't get me wrong. I like the pre chorus too and overall I like it as a radio song, but the rest of your list is just killer.
Thanx. :)

4. Faithless
5. Witch Hunt

Working Man
Free Will
Closer To The Heart (Live)
Show Don't Tell
The Big Money
Finding My Way
A Passage To Bangkok
Available Light
Vital Signs
I know you are not thrilled with Presto, but I really like it. To me it was the first time Alex came back. Available Light is my favorite from that album. It is synth heavy, but I love its progginess and the melody and words.
I know my Rush songs are a little more traditional popular favorites, but I love how we both have Witch Hunt in the top 10. Great song!
My top 10 (as of December 3, 2018)
10: The Way The Wind Blows (Snakes And Arrows)
9: The Pass (Presto)
8: Kid Gloves (Grace Under Pressure)
7: Middletown Dreams (Power Windows)
6: Natural Science (Permanent Waves)
5: Vital Signs (Moving Pictures)

Test For Echo: Resist
Vapour Trails: Earthshine
Snakes And Arrows: Malignant Narcissism
Clockwork Angels: The Garden
Love The Way The Wind Blows
Great list. We're almost twins, I think. Great way to list them, really. A top ten with an honorable mention from every album. Genius.
The rest of the songs on this roughly-made list are not in any particular order:
10. Bastille Day
9. Distant Early Warning
8. Beneath, Between and Behind
7. The Spirit of Radio
6. La Villa Strangiato
5. Cygnus X-1: Book One
4. Time Stand Still
3. The Analog Kid
2. 2112 title track/suite
1. Xanadu (absolutely, Pete!)
WAY too many honorable mentions...
1. Jacob's Ladder
2. Subdivisions
3. Tears
4. Resist
5. Xanadu
6. Time and Motion
7. Mystic Rhythms
8. Animate
9. Force Ten
10. Driven
Great list
Very hard to do a top 10 with this band so much good stuff, stretching 40 plus years.
But here goes
1. Cygnus x1
2. Xanadu
3. Mystic Rhythms
4 Analog Kid
5 Closer To the Heart
6 Time Stands still
7 The Trees
8 Circumstances
9 2112
10 What your doing
You're the only person who put Mystic Rhythms on your list - good stuff ! Here is my list:
20 After Image
19 Closer to the Heart
18 Mystic Rhythms
17 Madrigal
16 Red Sector A
15 Working Man
14 Tom Sawyer

5 In the End
4 Farewell to Kings
3 Vital Signs
2 Xanadu ( Exit Stage Left )
1 Witch Hunt
Really Smart witch hunt is my number one
Really Smart cheers
Really Smart for some reason I read these lists... I was reading a rolling stone article ranking all 160 odd rush songs. Witch hunt was ranked in the 60s I think.... in the description it was described as the weakest song on a moving pictures. I stopped reading then and there.
10. Cinderella Man
9. Fountain of Lamneth
8. Circumstances
7. Xanadu
6. By-Tor & Snow Dog
5. Analog Kid
4. Camera Eye
3. Natural Science
2. 2112
1. Cygnus X1 Book II
Too many honorable mentions to list.
My (all time) favourite is also Xanadu. It's surprising that a lot of us puts that majestic, masterfully constructed epic as first.
10. Circumstances
09. 2112
08. Hemispheres
07. The Necromancer
06. Xanadu
05. Working Man
04. La Villa Strangiato
03. Subdivisions
02. Anthem
01. Limelight
I love all Rush but my top 10
1 Cygnus X-1
2 Fountain of Lamneth
3 Jacobs Ladder
4 Hemispheres
5 Xanadu
6 Camera Eye
7 Natural Science
8 Between the Wheels
9 Countdown
10 2112
Awwww. We gotta see the art, Pete. Bring back the LP art ay? Beauty. mt and 99 in L.A. big fans.
Time Stand Still, Closer to the Heart, Limelight, Roll the Bones, Nobody's Hero, Distant early warning, Subdivisions, Show don't tell, Fly by Night
I love your list!
I wrote an English paper in college about, "Witch Hunt!"
💜💫✌🏼🎵
Witch hunt is My favorite song. The lyrics are so relevant now. Epic chord progression.
Rush is my all time favourite band, so creating a top 10 list was a very tough job. I still managed to do it, so here's my opinion!
10. Tom Sawyer
9. The Garden
8. YYZ
7. The Camera Eye
6. The Spirit Of Radio
5. 2112
4. Freewill
3. Subdivisions
2. The Anarchist
HM: The Fountain Of Lamneth, Natural Science, The Enemy Within, Far Cry, Clockwork Angels.
1. Xanadu
1) Mystic Rhythms (particularly the R30 Version, Geddy's vocal. Just superb)
2) Scars
3) Tai Shan (I love travel and Asian cultures and such, always loved this song. I know it's a hugely hated one but it's a big deal to me. HYF was my very first Rush album)
4) Resist (particularly the Rush in Rio stripped down performance, beyond perfect lyrics. It's Neil, what else can you expect?)
5) Alien Shore
6) red lenses
7) Cut To The Chase (THAT HIGH PITCHED SQUEAL AT 2 : 44 ALEX DOES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SOLO! MOTHER OF GOD, GREATEST TONE AND THING I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE!!!)
8) Making Memories
9) Heresy
10) The Analog Kid
You are correct: any RUSH ‘favorites’ list will change often!
I cant do it because I love all of their music but there are a few Rush songs that are special for me- they hit that nerve , they never get old. In no order:
1)Ghost Of A Chance
2)Earthshine
3)Limelight
4)Fly By Night
R.I.P. N.P.
Ghost Of A Chance is so underrated!

💥THE GIRL WHO LISTENED TO RUSH💥
From the back of the stadium
She’s easy to see
Standing up at the stage
In her Starman tee
From Anthem to Limelight
To YYZ
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
And all of the rockers
And all of the heshers
Well they dreamed of the day
That they might get her
And drive her away
In a Red Barchetta
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
Philosophers and ploughmen
They can’t resist her call
They cannot choose
Not to decide
So they've got no choice at all
They've gotta love her
No she doesn’t say "Pert"
And she doesn’t say "Part"
Yeah, she knows it’s "Neil Peert"
‘Cause he’s close to her heart
Say a prayer for John Rutsey
He was there at the start
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
Philosophers and ploughmen
They can’t resist her call
They cannot choose
Not to decide
So they've got no choice at all
They've gotta love her
Why don’t girls ever listen to Rush? (X a lot)
But she listened to Rush!
The blacksmith and the artist
They can’t resist her call
You cannot choose
Not to decide
So you’ve got no choice at all
No you’ve got no choice at all
You’ve gotta love her!

Love your channel!
Excited to dig in!
Show Don't Tell and The Pass were the 2 singles off of Presto. You should revisit the song The Pass. It's dark and moody.
Rush's debut album is hard and AMAZING!!
New watcher to your channel and just loving the lists and wealth of amazing band knowledge. Had to add my list and as everyone points out, tough to narrow it down:
10 Freeze(part 4 of fear)
9 Grand Designs
8 The Pass
7 Freewill
6 Countdown

My list changes constantly, and since I live a few minutes from Lakeside Park in St Catharines, that song's there by default.
My first big concert was 1988 with Rush at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Hold Your Fire was the tour, Time Stand Still was the single. It sneaks in my list sometimes.
First exposure was my brother's Moon copy of the debut (given away at local Woolco!), and All The World's A Stage on my aunt's 8-track. Anything from those too.

I just made a playlist with your top 10! GREAT
I'm very glad to see The Necromancer on this list. I've always loved the song and it definitely never gets the kind of credit it deserves, mostly due to the stigma surrounding the album and the fact that it nearly killed the band's career.

Here are my ten personal favorites:

9. Mystic Rhythms
8. The Trees
7. The Spirit Of Radio
6. The Camera Eye
5. By-Tor And The Snow Dog
4. The Necromancer

1. Limelight (Moving Pictures)
2. Subdivisions (Signals)
-----------------------------------
3. Xanadu (A Farewell to Kings)

6. The Analog Kid (Signals)

The arrangement on La Villa Strangiato is just amazing. If not well rehearsed, it would be very easy to forget your place in that track....

Agreed - I love 70s Rush, but from a pure song writing perspective, they hit their peak in the 80s.
Virtual Graphics: I am with you. I listen to Power Windows often. Marathon and Mystic Rhythms are among my top two. Yours?
i love power windows
Virtual Graphics
With all due respect...nah
Worst Rush albums imo: 1) Vapor Trails, 2) Roll the Bones, 3) Hold Your Fire, 4) Power Windows, 5) Rush.

My Top 10:-
10. Subdivisions
9. Grand Designs
8. Available Light
7. Jacob's Ladder
6. Witch Hunt
5. Circumstances
4. Vital Signs
3. Afterimage
2. Limelight
1. Xanadu
I agree. I don't why people don't mention The song Here Again it is a very good song with a killer guitar solo by Alex . It's just a good deep cut to me.
It’s interesting I think that Rush is one of those bands which became much better “song” writers later in their careers (genesis being another).
I grew up with early Rush but I have to give credit to great songwriting
1. Time stand still..... one of the only songs to explore the transient nature of life... astonishing poetic and lyrical capture of one part of being human.... never been done better... GENIUS
2. Nobody’s Hero
Again, flawless vignette into the nature of heroism.
3. Losing it.....Hemingway, and everyone who ever faded away
4. Red sector A ..... choked me up every time.
5 distant early warning.....pertinent
6. Xanadu..... drug addiction expressed through metaphor!!! Brilliant
7. A farewell to kings oh that bass tone!!
8. 2112 .......
1.Cygnus X1
2.Hemispheres
3.La Villa Strangiatto
4.Freewill

7. Entre Nous
6. Limelight
5. Ghost of a Chance
4. La Villa Strangiato

1. Subdivisions
These are really flexible to be honest, so ones I really wanted to put but just had to decide against would be: Finding My Way, Fly By Night, Anthem, Superconductor, Red Sector A, Countdown, The Big Money, Natural Science, and The Camera Eye.
Tough to pick 10:
1. 2112
2. The Necromancer
3. Xanadu

5. By-Tor & the Snow Dog
6. The Trees
7. Freewill
8. Camera Eye
9. Subdivisions
10. Red Sector A
Total agreement with you Pete on the guitar solos on all the above. Lyrics on Necromancer make it a fav, same with 2112. Complexities on Xanadu, depth of Trees, Camera Eye; New direction alienated some fans with Subdivisions and Red Sector A, but really pulled off a major transformation most bands never survive.
