Ostrava is the best kind of hero. Someone who fights evil despite knowing he is inept, because it’s right. He’s scared, scared as all hell, but in the end he marches on.

Meanwhile I’m faced with an annoying as hell Ostrava in ds3 as an invader in the farron woods. I can’t tell if that’s an npc or a player because of his movements.
Ostrava was no coward, for it takes a truely brave soul to search for the truth and not accept the falsities that a lesser man would have just accepted at face value.
He asked for help and kept moving forward, that's brave and Wise. He knew he didn't have what it took to defeat his enemy but he still pushed regardless and ask for your help.
Cowardice is a state, not a trait.
Being brave is directly linked to cowardice. Bravery isn't a lack of fear, it's overcoming it and pushing on anyway.
Bravery and Cowardice are not mutually exclusive
The simple answer is gameplay. There used to be a game mode that suited the lore, where if you died in soul form your character was deleted.

Man, I feel so bad for Ostrava. When you talk to him in the Nexus he tells you about Boletaria and it's history with such a sense of longing and warmth. When you speak to him outside he's genuinely distraught at the horrors his kingdom has been subjected to. He fights on despite his shortcomings and when I finally saw him kill himself and come back as a Phantom, I really didn't want to fight him and be the one to end it all. What a tragic character. It shows surprisingly restrained writing for a Japanese narrative too, they usually over explain everything ("The truth is, I AM PRINCE ALLANT! FAAAATHHEEERRRRRRR!!!!!!") but this is all done in tiny bits of understated dialogue that are nearly all entirely optional.

Vaati could you cover how the three bosses in 1-1 1-2, and 1-3 are the heroes of Boletaria? I always found them to be epic, they guarded their king even after becoming demons and when killed even their spirits attempt to protect him as the three Black Phantoms.

I don't know why but Ostrava reminds me of Siegmeyer from Dark Souls.
Ostrava's fluted armor has grooves similar to catarina armor, only vertically to the catarina's horizontal. Both have Noble intent and inevitably fall into insurmountable odds only to have their honor witled down on each occurence. The chosen one seems to have an interesting affect on character driven npc's.
Daniel Caldwell nah, i think hes more related to oscar the fateless, it makes more sense, id say seignmeyer is more like biorr of the twin fangs, or solaire as biorr.
kevin rodriguez I remember thinking Ostrava when I saw Oscar for the first time, but Siegmeyer and Ostrava both are reliant on the chosen one on saving them
Its probably because Ostrava and Siegmeyer gets some help from the main character that drives them to the brink of madness since they had nothing left to lose.
Jack Book but think about it this way, you also have to save biorr, and biorr goes to sleep after you do every single time, both use a 2 handed claymore like sword in one hand, and both talk in a similar way. not to mention the bulky armor. on top of that it was originally planned to have oscar be saved as well, and at the end of the game have a fight against him but it was removed.
On my first playthrough of the demon souls remake, I made it to ostrava in the king's tower while he was injured. When I go to talk to him , I accidentally kill him with a shield bash when I meant to talk to him. I felt terrible until he came back as a black phantom and get one shotted.I deserved that.

That's good - I hope people understood what I was getting at! I was trying to imply that your quest wasn't for nothing, since you go on to kill the false king.
You could say Ostrava is kinda like Siegemyer in a way you keep saving him in his time of need

originally,if you died in soul form you would go to the menu and your save would be deleted,but this was removed because it would be too hard.
Unlike Ostrava, we are bound to the Nexus. Instead of dying in soul form and becoming a BP, we just respawn :p

Yea i wasnt to sure i know that once they wanted it if you died you had to hunt down another player to come back to life but i think they dropped that lol
+Najarala In tune with the lore, Black Phantoms arrive from someone who has not necessarily died, but lost HOPE, similar to Hollowing in Dark Souls.

Selen hollows from the death of her brother
Garl hollows out of revenge
The Three Knights of Allant hollow out of failure of duty
Ostrava hollows out of despair
It can be assumed that every other black phantom you encounter in-game also hollows because of their position in the world.
Your character never turned into a Black Phantom because you never lost hope, and continued to fight no matter what.
Ostrava will always be my favourite Npc in the souls series.

Between Ostrava’s tragic storyline and wealthy past, his aspiration for greatness is such an amazing story- a character that I truly love. I’ve rewatched this video sum 4 or 5 times, thank you for bringing his story to those of us who haven’t played Demon’s Souls.

It's a good theory, I tend towards believing the serpents are trying to serve their own ends, though. Your theory is just as likely, and sounds much cooler!
When I first saw him I though he was a powerful enemy due to the colored aura around him so I back stabbed him and when he was like "what are you doing" I was like oh shit and killed the dredglings to save him. A blue eyed knight then killed him.

Now I know why these are titled prepare to cry hahaha. Demon's Souls story feels way more personal/emotional than Dark Souls and especially dark souls 2...
Im not saying dakrsouls is better, but its a lot sadder in so many other ways. Seigmeyer. The lore and story behind the chaos sisters. etc.
Brolaire yeah that's true. But ds2 just doesn't do it for me with it's story, I just feel like DeS and ds1 do it so much better. I recently went back through ds1 and there's so much to love about that game!
Well, Dark Souls 2 felt much more personal for me because it introduces a very small but motivational story about the players past. You can see it in the intro. The curse took away everything from you, incluiding your family (which you could even have killed for souls because they MELT its a much more cruel metaphore than disappeareing slowly or becoming ash taken by the wind which could've implied they died first or left you... no... THEY MELT). Let's remember you don't lose your sanity in a second, its a process and in one of those blackouts (take Lucatiel for example) you could have killed them.
Also, its the first game that adresses the curse itself not the kindling of the fire or the age of darkW. We end up discovering that the curse is not transmited as everyone thought. The curse was always there but it becomes noticeable when the fire starts to fade. Dark Souls 2 is meant to be the start of the search of an alternative to linking the fire to get rid of the curse (which would be in fact control it).
Remember the start of Dark Souls 1 the "things" that found the Lord Souls were empty husks, hollows. Then the furtive Pigmy found the dark soul and with it filled up those empty hollow husks.
Now that I'm immersed into Demon's Souls because I promised to finish it before Bloodborne comes out, I wish you had created more Demon's Souls Lore Videos
I don't know what it is about Demon's Souls.. The atmosphere is unbelievable. I can't even put into words why I like it so much, it just keeps pulling me back in. I love every game in the series, but Demon's Souls feels unique. I love it and hope they port it to PS4.

You are starting to become one of my favorite RUclipsrs. There are a lot of things that I have learned from your videos since I never really realized that the story is in the item/character locations. I just read the descriptions on items and those sucked me into the lore, but these videos do so much more than that and now I can't get enough of Demon's/Dark Souls lore.

I was upset when I saw Ostrava at the bottom of the stairs in 1-4 seemingly defeated that the man he thought was his father was now a demon and had lost all hope. After saving him 3 times throughout Boletaria I was sad to see him die.
Please continue the good work, one thing I like in your videos is the fact your narrative is dark and melancholic, that put us on the mood of the game, and thank you for all this.

I like the video but I dont think Ostrava kills himself. I think he might have been fatally injured by the False King and bleed to death on the steps after speaking with you. just my opinion, still great video!

I bet that Vaati could narrate even the most inconsequential thing (like paint drying) and still make it seem like it truly matters and is dramatic. Plus he could probably make anyone bawl their eyes out by the end of it.

The cgs is the Covetous Gold Serpent ring, found in Sen's Fortress - most players find it, I think. It's used to boost item discovery.
The first sentence of the description reads; The serpent is an imperfect dragon and symbol of the Undead.
Did the game ever actually explain what happened to the sixth archstone in the Nexus, or did I just miss it? I gotta admit, I found the lore in Demon's Souls to be a bit more haphazard and easy to miss even compared to Dark Souls
It was meant to be DLC, but, they never released anything. Fan theory, from what i've heard, is that it leads to Lordran. Somewhat connecting the two games.

I wondered this too, but I realized the bit the Monumental explains to you is the sixth archstone. The fog started in the land of giants, all giants were corrupted and the fog swallowed the dimension. And in midst of desperation it was probably quarantined until Allant started playing with soul arts.

The only thing about this that bothers me is that Ostrava tells you before he dies about the room, and in it are Demonbrandt and Soulbrandt, but he had seen and momentarily fought his father... so he would've clearly seen that his father is holding the dreaded Soulbrandt. Yet he thinks both blades are still in the locked room... >_>
There's a possibility that Ostrava doesn't know what Soulbrandt looked like.

I mainly play on PC, and I bought a ps3 a couple of months ago mainly due to demon's souls (of course i had other games i wanted to play like heavy rain, dragon's dogma, ninja gaiden, the last of us ecc...would be exagerated to buy a console just for one game. That's why i'll never but an Xbox)
in my opinion it was DEFINITELY worth it!
I'd put Demon slightly after Dark souls 1 in terms of quality...and the reasons are just 3:
the less "coesive" level design (separate "levels")
there are very few movesets (very few)
and lastly, but maybe even more important, the "lore" of the world is not as strong and well thought as DKS1
i still think that is better than DKS2 (which is a great game but lacked too many points that i would have forgive in demon's souls since it came before, but i expected some evolution)
let's hope for DKS3!!!!!!!!!!
the rune shield and sword, if anyone was wondering, are also available in the second portion of the tower of Latria. although, the fall required to get to them is slim and stacked against an instant kill drop from the tower.

Wow, looking at this game, it's really hard to believe it came before dark souls. All the animations are awesome, especially the run and sprint animations. What happened to dark souls?
Dark Souls was given more weighty animations, Demons Souls looks more floaty. See how the light shields are held? I prefer Dark Souls animations
Ryan Wong it's up to you how to get the key, if you save him, you'll get it before fighting King Allant, by killing him or letting him die, you can get the key and weapons out of his dead body
Ok, the reason Demon and Dark Soul's are so close to looking the same, is because Demon Souls is PS3 Exclusive when it was made. Dark Souls was built for 360, PS3, and PC all at the same time. When you do multiple platforms for a game, you sacrifice graphics and animation to make sure it works for all systems.

Never got to play Demon's Souls b/c I'm an Xbox player (until the ps4 comes out) but I've watched a couple playthroughs and man do I wish I could have played it. As good as Dark Souls is, the story in Demon's just seems a bit fuller and more interesting. Good job again Vaati, your videos never disappoint.
