I love how he says "I´m confident this is where the DLC will be based" and right after that he says "let me paint a picture" ... the force is strong with this one, intuition can´t be fooled, but sometimes we´re not even aware of it.
@@SpectraVoidborn Vaati tried to guess in this video where the DLC would be based, but he got it wrong. Still, right after, he says: "Let me paint a picture". So even though he wasn't right about the londor DLC, the DLC was set inside a painting. Pretty ironic. Nice observation by the guy in this comment.
I personally was hoping for a Londor DLC and seeking out all those lovely dark miracles and sorceries that rips gods to pieces. RIP - Dark Fog, Resonating Soul, Great Resonating Soul and Scraps of Life...you’ll be missed!
poor me! I never got the Londor DLC I wanted! Not to say the Ashes and Ringed DLCs were bad. They just sorta deus ex machina'd the whole series with so many interesting questions and scenarios unexplored.
I'm Irish so swearing isn't offensive but me and my kids and giggled when he swore, definitely unusual, I say either edwad or bed bananas are to blame for this, horrible influences on our vaati hahaha
DS is over, at least for the current generation of gaming, so don't get your hopes up. From is focused on Sekrio now, an action game with zero RPG/Multiplayer elements. Sigh.. will be passing on that one, sadly. The only thing we can hope for in the next few years is a Bloodborne 2, but we may never see another Souls game, and if we do it'll be 5+ years off I imagine. From themselves has confirmed it, Miyazaki is tired of Souls.
Maybe not, there's a lot you can draw that the ringed city might be Londor. They are both cities of hallows, and there are dead primordial serpents there.
you better watch out as a silver K***ht is gonna fuck you right at the end of the slide and you better not wait in line for too long you might turn hollow
I'm glad somebody else was as taken aback as I was. Now I've heard Morgan Freeman, James Earl Jones and Vaati swear, rendering my innocence truly lost.
Tom Bonney shame it wont actually happen ,dark souls lore way to serious for that, even if it would make the whole world laugh and choke and die if it ACTUALLY be canon
I am not sure but are you talking about these 3 fat golden winged knights at the top level (roof) at the bridge to reach the twin princes to get hunter ring I believe?
Anri Wedding = Dark Bonfire. Look at their positioning, the animations, and the dark flames that creep out into the player. It's totally a Dark Bonfire to link humanity. The only difference is that instead of stabbing the corpse in the chest, we stab it in the brain. Speculate.
It does look like it now that you mention it, it could serve as a mockery to how bonfires are made. Plus all of the Dark Pyromancies of the game say that the Flames of Humanity are Black.
I'm convinced Yuria is some form of dark firekeeper who serves Kaathe and Velka, and their goal is to do the impossible: unite fire and dark into one entity. "Black flames born from the Abyss bear no shadow." By creating a black flame, there is no more light and dark, and no more cycle. If you let the flame fade, it will only come back, and if you try to keep the flame going, it will only fade. The only way to stop the cycle is to "wed" both light and dark together. Maybe that's why the ritual is conceived as a wedding in the first place. This unison is also reflected when Yuria says, "Make Londor whole." The gods broke the world by creating light and dark, shattering time and space itself, and Yuria is actually the good guy trying to reunite the broken world. Also, if you think about it, 8 dark sigils are needed because 8 represents infinity and cycles. Okay I'm done for now.
I have the Ring of Whispers from DS2, it lets me hear hidden things. For instance, you know what became of Ornstein and Smough? Ornstein searched for his old friend the Nameless King and pledged loyalty to the dragon covenant. He stripped off his armor, jammed the front gate shut with his dragonslayer spear, and became a dragonkin/full-on dragon. He might even be the Storm Drake for all we know. As for Smough, he hung up his executioner's hammer, joined the Way of the White, changed his name, ate so many men he turned into writhing dark humanity, then went back to get revenge on Gwyndolin. He ended up right back where he started. That might sound crazy, but don't forget you can only get Smough's set after defeating Aldrich, just like every other boss set. So yeah, Ornstein is Storm Drake, Smough is Aldrich, NK is Firstborn, Gwynevere is Queen Lothric, Ocelotte could just be Prince Lothric's birth name, and the "angels" are the primordial serpents. Boom.
I favor the Usurpation of Fire ending because it offers us a way out of the cycle. You unite the flame with the darkness of humanity and your own powerful soul. Creating something that might be a little... different. I always ripped on the "let the fire fade" endings because the Age of Dark would be a miserable place to live. Everything would be hollow, with no light, no civilization, just a savage orgy of violence. But with the Ringed City, we find out that the Darksign was the doing of Gwyn, and we know that the hollows of Londor retain their sanity and even form a society. The Dark Sigil is like the Darksign, but it's not a shackle. There's no fire to burn away your souls on death, to burn away your memories and sanity. As an Unkindled, you're not the kind of Undead that you were in previous games. Rather, you are a sort of magical construct made to link the Fire. When Yoel gives you Sigils, you become human again. You're reintroduced to the darkness of humanity that you lost when you were resurrected as Unkindled. And once you have enough of these Sigils, you are a worthy vessel to harbor the First Flame within yourself. The power of the flame, the good things it gives us, combined with the immortality of the Dark Soul. You might be becoming a flame that never fades, just as bringing the Dark Soul to the Painter is speculated to create a painting that will never rot. It's striking to see what a visionary Kaathe was. He must've realized after so many cycles that letting the flame fade was never going to be enough to empower an Age of Man. The Firekeeper tells you that the Flame will relight. The answer wasn't to destroy the flame, but usurp it. Use its power for humanity. And conveniently, the Gods created the Unkindled. A vessel for fire, but not a Hollow, not really a human. An Unkindled can't betray the flame on its own. You don't have the option ingame without discovering certain secrets, as you were created to be drawn towards flame. The gods must've thought that they'd created something foolproof, an instrument in the Linking that couldn't choose the path of the Dark Lord. But Kaathe outplayed them. He devised a way to reintroduce the darkness of humanity to the Unkindled, turning the perfect tool for the Linking into the perfect Lord who could harness the Fire for Humanity.
Letting the fire fade is the best ending; Gwyn feared the dark, so he linked the flame himself, going against nature. When you let the flame fade in DS3, the Firekeeper says that this is how it was meant to be, and that flame shall return, but without gods. Just a world led by humans, nothing else.
it was going to happen anyway. the age of dark. besides. the kingdom is already dead by ds1. hollows are everywhere the land is infested with beasts. dragon decendants, demons. its all fucked already. might as well get the age of dark over with sooner rather than later imo.
I realise I go pretty ham with the dark sign / nashandra discussion around 9:30 - so if you wanna go straight back to Londor stuff then skip to 17:32 Next video should be on the Angels! Going to try and make it a shorter video so I can get back into a damn weekly schedule.. :(
He's eternal he is the beginning and end life and death everything in this universe comes from the giant dad he is dark and light he's the giver of life and the grim reaper
Clearly he'll be the secret final boss that only unlocks by beating every game in under 8 hours with no deaths (this sort of save state transfer will be added unannounced in the final DLC).
I don't see the Atonement Miracle as a punishment imposed through deception upon traitors to Londor, but just what it says: the opportunity given to _atone_ for their sins. Drawing enemies to kill you, over and over again, is certainly a novel path to penance.
"This is the only tale known by exiles, who believe it carries words of forgiveness. Cursed journeys, too, must ultimately come to an end." I dunno man the wording on this sounds kinda like they're being tricked
So I'm really hoping for 2 things from the Dark Souls 3 dlcs. The first being a "light" based DLC that digs deeper into the Lothric royal family and the existence of angels, because Angels are seriously the most mysterious and straight up alien concept to be introduced to the lore. The second being a "dark" based DLC, that focuses on Londor and the Sable Church, because that has been the most interesting new land/faction added in Dark Souls 3. I think that, thematically, the dichotomy of having Light and Dark expansions would perfectly sum up the spirit of Dark Souls in both an in universe, and meta way.
If love how Angels are like something straight out of Berserk. Despite their... kinda noble, holyish facade, you can *feel* that something is off. They're probably eating babies or something. That's why they're so fat.
YouSoSpice Those are actually just winged knights, the golden ones implied to be somehow "ascended" or more powerful, but still human knights who worship the actual angels. actual angels aren't really seen in the game as far as we know. Though I do think it's really cool, because they don't really fit into the established lore at all. The gods in Dark Souls aren't actual deities, at least not in the typical sense. They're just pygmies powered up by the light soul. They're more powerful than humans yes, but fundamentally not that different from them. Also the gods aren't creators, they didn't form the world, they're not the ones responsible for any of the major laws of nature or metaphysical concepts, and most importantly they are all physically bound to the world. There is no alternate world or "after life" in which they live, let alone a "heaven", which Angels are normally associated with. The gods are just a race of really powerful people, and they don't use angels as servants, just other, weaker gods. So angels really don't seem to fit in with the lore of the gods at all, which means they must be a completely separate thing entirely, which makes them super terrifying, because if there really is some kind of heaven/celestial world where these beings are living in, then that means there are concepts and laws of nature and worlds that even the gods were completely ignorant of. They could be something on an entire different plane of existence, kinda like how love craftian entities are too us.
pdragon619 Ah, that's right. Those three dudes are just Ascended. All in all, something sure is off about them and their angels. Leaving a maiden blind and deaf and locking her in a cage is no laughing matter, too.
What if Velka is the old lady we hear narrating at the beginning of Dark Souls 1 and 3? The first thing we hear in DS3 is the same voice as the one from DS1 saying "yes, indeed. It is called Lothric". Sounds like she's responding to someone here, no? What if that someone was Yuria, and she was asking her something along the lines of "I hear there's going to be another linking of the fire soon. Do you know where it is?" Then Yuria sets out for Lothric in order to find a Lord and usurp the flame.
The Dark Sigil description is as follows: "A black gaping hole in the flesh that resembles the brand of an Undead. The darkness of humanity seeps from this bottomless pitch-back hole, the gap filled by the accumulation of the curse. This Dark Sigil will never heal, but there is a tale told of a Fire Keeper who returned from the Abyss, and brought great comfort to a bearer of the curse." Could the Fire Keeper who returned from the Abyss be Velka??
I'm assuming that the referenced firekeeper is the one who's soul you find at the top of the tower outside firelink shrine, since giving it to the firekeeper allows her to heal the dark sigil.
I wouldn't think that firekeeper had been to the abyss either, if it weren't for that quote about the firekeeper who returned from the abysss bringing great comfort to a bearer of the curse. What greater comfort is healing?
@Crackodemon Friede also acknowledges you as the lord of Hollows and tells you to go back to your subjects if you usurped the fire before going into the painting.
Julian Lopez Exactly what I was thinking. Speaking of, I hope Edwad continues into the DLC, being so close to end of the series I'm kinda... Sad to see Edwad go.
I live in San Diego but it’s so sad when I go outside. I live downtown & have to avoid human shit & needles when I walk around.... when I was a kid I ran around in orange groves without shoes on

@@The_Fat_Turtle Nobody enjoys actually playing the Drakengard games. The controls are clunky, the frame rate is abysmal, and combat gets boring quickly. People play them just to keep up with the lore nowadays. They didn't age well either. I suggest to just watch some Drakengard/NieR lore vids or something. (Be sure to see the weird AF "joke" ending to the last game since that's actually canon) Then skip to the NieR series. The gameplay isn't by any means perfect in those games either but the story more than makes up for any shortcomings and it's still quite enjoyable. Automata was the first one that nailed every aspect to make a real masterpiece though.
This probably means nothing, but I've noticed a couple instances of Sindarin in Dark Souls. Sindarin is one of the Elvish languages created by J.R.R. Tolkien. Anor Londo is one example, as "anor" means "sun" and "lond" most closely means "haven." This might be the same case as Londor, since "dor" means "land." Though the grammatically correct name would be "Lonnor."
There was a goddess in the Greek Pantheon - Nemesis - who stood for revenge. But it wasn't just revenge - it was the elimination of imbalance. If Gwyn in his fear tipped the world with the Age of Fire, perhaps it's the job of Velka to return it to a more equitable darkness.
Gwyn's linking of the fire is literally called "the first sin". Is it not very logical that Velka would have everything to do with restoring the world to its natural order, if going against that order is a sin? Also seems to imply that Gwyn's linking of the fire gave birth to Velka if it's true though. Can hardly be a goddess of sin, if there are no sins.
my guess is that the crow dropped Edwad on his head on the way to Lordran, and when the bell woke him, he wasn't completely healed, thus The Retarded Unkindled
Three humans being the child of a god would be pretty difficult, Light Soul and all. I wouldn't put it past Velka to not get busy with a human though. There were an awful lot of very naughty raven girls in the painted world. I'm mainly lingering on 3 to maybe get answers to the Primordial Serpents' motivations, and where the First Flame came from. If it's just "it's a cycle that always existed" answer, or isn't answered at all, well... whatever, I guess. 3's invented mechanics for sigils and deep waters and ingesting dead god souls that shouldn't exist are so all over the place that my brain has kind of shut off completely past DaS1.
But remember - the Witch of Izalith had humanoid "daughters of chaos", and I think that Velka's daughters could be much the same (if indeed they are hers). I agree that they added too much fluff by complicating the sigils / signs in ds3, I don't quite understand what they're getting at there. That said though, I thought the same way about the Unkindled before this video..but now i love the idea that the Unkindled is born from undead linking the fire so many times that a new type of undead has been created. I often run into the feeling that DS3 is trying to more clearly convey what DS2 tried to. You run into a lot of redundant concepts, and I wish they wouldn't get so mired in the concept of cycles and souls. Hopefully the DLC just..moves things along and shows us something new.
Honestly I thought this would be the game where you broke the cycle since the second game reinforced that it really all was just a cycle that never ended. I was really disappointed that we didn't get more clarity on things like the primordial serpents and all the sigils. I think DS3 is the sequel DS1 deserved, and it isn't to say DS2 is not a good game, its a great game, but I wish DS3 had been DS2 and we got a DS3 that finally tied it all together and broke the cycle. There are alot of loose ends and things I think that would really click and be rewarding if we had something more resolute for the various sigils and endings other than the continuation of a cycle that has been happening for 2 games already. But who knows, maybe the deep waters could tie in bloodborne? lol
Hey Vaati this is totally separate, but what do you think about some of the (I think) retcons done to Carim? The main one which i can think of is how they used to be 'famed' for using things like the parrying dagger and fighting without a shield (a la Lautrec) but now with Eygon we see essentially the complete opposite. I'd be interested to hear your views on this.
Listening to this for the 5th time in 2022. I still deeply wish that we got a “dark souls lands” style game that focused on the other kingdoms, London, Catarina, Astora being the major hits. I guess we can always continue to dream. Thanks Vaati!
It makes sense. In DS1 you leave the fire. You aren't really the dark lord. All you did is abandon your throne as the one who would link the fire. Nashandra wanted someone to smother the first flame, but she couldn't. She is pure dark, and so any attempt to link it would simply destroy her, and fuel the fire. Only one who is both light, and dark could take the fire, and then smother it. That's why she wanted you to be one with the dark.
Also I just had a epiphany in regards to Velka. Look at the parallels between Christianity, and Dark souls. Adam and Eve committed the first sin by breaking the one rule God had made. Eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. This first sin brought death into the world. Gwyn committed the first sin when he linked the fire. It was the one thing he shouldn't have done, and because he did death came into the world. In the form of the undead curse. A curse that makes you die over, and over, and over. Velka is trying to right this wrong, and smother the fire. The player even has a bit of that Jesus imagery. You died to save the world, and because you rose again you are the only one who can save it from it's sin.
+Avarickan That is some next level lore connotation. If you polish up this theory I'm sure that you could make some really interesting speculations with it!
STORM LORD I'd say its Frampt. Lucifer's name means "shining one", or "light-bearer" in Hebrew. Frampt works to make the first flame continue shining. It just seems to fit. This means that Kaathe must be the equivalent of another angel. I'd guess Gabriel as he is the messenger who told of Jesus' birth.
theory: the more sin there is in the world, the stronger and more influential velka becomes, as she has more stuff to punish people for. If this is true it makes perfect sense that she's punishing the world for the first sin and therefore is one of the most powerful gods, no matter how hidden and furtive she is
At 2:54, you can see the game did its job properly, his souls are on the right. Anyway good video. The free camera really helps with the visuals as you explain the lore. It most be hard work.
+Strider-Ragnarok it takes a lot of time to edit, yeah. But once I've started visually representing scenes this way.. I can't stop! At least in ds3 I have cheat engine to help. Bloodborne made things really hard
I feel that the Lord of Hollows ending is the true ending. Humanity finally takes the flames for themselves and take back the world that was rested from their hands by Gwyn and continue the natural progression. (Ancient, Fire, Dark.)
I know this is a two year old comment, but I never understood this take that people seem to have. Usurpation of Fire is literally just you failing to learn the lesson that the gods also failed to learn. No matter how you look at it, you are also resisting the course of nature in taking the flame for yourself. The age of dark ending, which promises a proper renewal of the cycle is proper, I think. And it works this time because rather than just walking away and hoping no one else links the fire in your stead, The Firekeeper herself takes the flame to keep it safe while it fades and ensure it cannot be relinked
@@will2fite34 With the line of thinking in mind wouldn't you also say that by taking the flame within ourselves we are also taking the flame to keep it safe and ensuring that no one can relink exactly like the fire keeper would've done in the other ending? Sure it most likely will still fade, but while it smolders we could use the last of it's power to build a kingdom of man ready for the age of dark to come? I don't see it as making the same mistake as the gods because they have been restarting the age of fire over and over again, but by taking the flame away we can finally begin the age of dark. That's my line of thinking anyway, but as in most things in Dark Souls it comes down to your own interpretation of events. Nothing will ever be confirmed 100% because that's the true beauty of Dark Souls.
J.A Vance Hmmm, good point. I guess I didn’t think of it like that because the hollows of Londor seem to want to use the power of the Lord of Hollows indefinitely. I guess in the end, whether or not it’s a proper age of dark depends on the player character’s intent. When the time comes will he let the flame within him fade? Or he will further pervert its nature and find some way to keep it going? All depends on role play, really
That isn’t the natural progression though. You are literally usurping the flame as Gwyn did, you are commiting the first sin, again. The natural progression, which is stated multiple times in the game is snuffing out the embers and embracing darkness. Taking the flame for yourself, for humanity, is not snuffing out the embers. What will happen is you will end up having to link the first flame again just as Gwyn did and then the cycle will start once again.
Only 100 lives? That really isn't that impressive when you compare it to the player who slaughters a village of peaceful hollows, destroys a religion, wipes out the current royal blood line and defeats the God of War.
Maybe the reason is cuz she lives in a place where people don't really die such as hollows so the game doesn't count the hollows she kills but the non hollows count cuz they don't come back
The games have some great monster designs, but Kaathe and Frampt freak me out in a way the others don't. The humanish shape of their faces just look wrong.
+Corrector1 just imagine them revamped with new graphics like the halo 2 gravemind. The original one was almost silly looking, the new one looks terrifying.
I would hope the Primordial Serpents make a return, or have a larger presance as they were one of the most influential forces in the first Dark Souls, guiding the Chosen Undead down the two paths, to Link the Fire or seek to become the Dark Lord.
11:29 I like to think that the darksign in the sky is the literal sun itself, and that in the Dark Souls universe the sun isn't a distant star but instead is one of Gwyn's miracles to cast his light across the world and in turn is itself fueled by the flame and fed by the linking of the fire. As the fire fades it begins to falter and fail taking on an appearance reminiscent of the darksign, but you can see trails of energy drawing downwards from it like the flame is consuming even it to try and stay alight, or that it too is being drawn down to the eventual ashen remains of the darkened future world where you fight Gael.
@@kc230285 A black hole wouldn't specifically only be a massive star that has died it's a lump of matter that's compressed below it's respective Schwarzschild radius. Basically a point where the curvature of spacetime is so severe that it enfolds around itself.
When Gwyn linked the fire he "recruited" Velka to create the undead curse; she did it willingly and has kept the curse reappearing for ages since she understands that a world without light would be horrible and enslaving humans is the only way to avoid it. However, with time she starts to feel sorry for her "children" (the undead) due to all the suffering she had been inflicting on them age after age, to help soothe this suffering she instructs her daughters to create the Sable Church as a way to offer comfort to the poor undead. The church became big and attracted the attention of Kaathe, who convinced the daughters to betray their mother and instead usurp the flame for the undead; now instead of serving as a way to comfort the undead, Velka's church has become the tool to destroy the Age of Fire she had painfully been protecting since Gwyn bid her do so. Velka must be a really sad character, she had to do horrible things for the common good, torturing her children for an eternity, and in the end it is her pity for them that dooms all
The Dark Soul was originally found by the Furtive Pygmy...in the First Flame itself. Thus, the Dark Soul is itself a Lordsoul, just like those found by Nito, the Witch of Izalith, and Gwyn himself. I think this is why Nashandra wanted the First Flame, because the Dark Soul and even Dark came from it...and is maybe even powered by it, just like Gwyn's own Lordsoul of Sunlight.
Underrated comment, people always neglect that fact. "Humanity" (The Dark Soul) was split amongst massive amounts of beings, similarly to Gwyn's splitting of his own Lord Soul but on a larger scale, and a large portion locked away by Gwyn using Fillianore at the end of time in the Ringed City, out of fear that it's power rivaled and overwhelmed that of the other 3 Lord Souls. The Dark Soul represents Entropy and the Opposite, not the absence, of Light; The Dark only exists because there is Flame, just as the Light. Pygmies (Humans) are "Pygmies" because we come from the same stock as "Gods" or Lords, we were the same beings before the Flame and the taking of the Lord Souls made small by the nature of The Furtive Pygmy and The Dark Soul. I believe the "First Sin" Aldia discovered wasn't the Linking of the Fire, but instead, the deception of Humanity into believing it was something different from what it truly was, and being forced under control by members of their own kind, "Gods" and Giants. Think of how much Gwyn went through just to secure not only his own strength, but The Furtive Pygmy's Ancestors weaknesses. He feared Humanity almost moreso than Dragons; Gwyn didn't need to deceive them in order to win the war, but he needed Eons of deception to put Humanity on the bottom of the ladder.
so theres ONE thing that could help explain some more things. i dont know quite what it means but if you look at the bridge thing where you fight the dragon slayer amour and look at the statues you can see primordial serpent statues meaning lothric held these serpents to something
+Android 19 perhaps. But why would lothric a people who was obsessed linking the fire ally or think highly of someone who's sole purpose was to *not* link the fire and bring the age of man
Hey, i wanted to tell you a theory about the firelink greatsword. I don't know if there is some similar theory in the internet but i want to talk about it. We always assumed the bonfires were created after the first flame and i think it's still true. But what about the first flame itself? We always saw it as a bonfire. But the description of the firelink greatsword says:.....this sword existed before the age of fire(or something like that)". So if the sword was created before the age of fire then we can say fire already existed during the age of the dragons. So what if the firelink greatsword was born from the tail of a dragon? I think this because of the weapon art of this greatsword. It's a flame attack in a direct line. Sounds familiar? It should because it's a similar attack as the dragon weapons from DS1. Maybe the once upon a time, a dragon like Sieth was born, a mortal dragon. After his death the firelink greatsword was born. (Continue in the comments because mobile)
The dragons discarded the weapon as useless and pointless because of their size. So the weapon remained there, on the ground. After sometime the weapon fell inside an archtree until it reached a cave. The same cave as the one in the DS1 introduction. There the sword hitted the ground, accidentaly using his latent power. And like this, the first flame was born, and the rest is history. Thank you for reading this long theory, i literally made this in 15 minutes because i didn't have anithing better to do. The part of the description of the firlink greatsword was written without reading the wiky, i just tried to remember it. The little story i made up about the dragons and the first flame isn't supported by items description except firelink's. I just tried to imagine a story and this is result. Even if there are no description to confirm this theory, i think the story of Dark Souls isn't supposed to be fully understandable with the help of item descriptions. (Again see under for the
The description are just clues. I now also want to apologize for any grammatical error because english isn't my first language and i'm writing this with a crappy old tablet. So tell me what tou think about this theory
It's interesting to say the least. Honestly though I think the sword itself existed before the age of fire but was renamed the Firelink Greatsword after Gwyn discovered the first flame.
Few things off, and the first of which being that the dragon weapons all look like the respective dragon it came from or at least has a nice likeness to it. Secondly, no dragons were metallic. Third, the Firelink Greatsword is much too refined to be a dragon weapon as all dragon weapons save the Moonlight Greatsword all look a bit beastial and raw. That's just from the weapon standpoint though. There are quite a bit more things that also bunk that but it doesn't matter as it is but a theory.
what if Kaathe and Velka are working together, and the angels are some form of creature made of both man and bird because they were a tool meant to be used by both of them to help drive man.
Never noticed that terminology thrown around so continuously in reference to the Dark Sign... a shackle. Makes even more sense having completed the Ringed City and learning of the Ringed Knights. Amazing video, Vaati... of a truly amazing series, From. I especially love your comment about the Age of Fire being undying, trying to die, and the Bonfires continuously being fueled by both man and humanity to continue resetting the world. This happens both from a story aspect, as well as a gameplay aspect. And, its just genius.
Izalith happened because if a crack in her kiln (how you get in excluding the chaos covenant path), so maybe Velka used her magic to cause the crack in the kiln
Finally somebody with the same idea. Dark stalker kathe would be the perfect final boss for the londor dlc. Imagine him fighting him in a pure black space like the 4 kings.
well here's one thing that can certainly tie velka to DS2. The fact that many characters you come across refer to you as a "sinner" when they find out you're undead. Always wondered why undead were associated with sinning in DS2,maybe the people of drangleic just developed that superstition?
Great video Vaati! I’m a long-time fan, first-time commenter. I especially enjoyed your insights connecting Velka to Londor as Velka has always been the most captivating mystery of Dark Souls lore for me and because the connections you pointed out support my personal theory that I have not yet seen discussed. I think her full name is Darkmoon Velka The Goddess of Sin. I believe that she founded the Darkmoon covenant which Dark Sun Gwyndolin inherited leadership of when Velka fled Anor Londo just as Yorshka inherited it from Gwyndolin. I believe that Velka is not only human but a powerful fragment of Manus similar to Nashandra. I think she is the first queen of darkness and attempted to corrupt the first king of light beginning a cycle that would be repeated over Dark Souls 2, its DLC , and possibly Dark Souls 3. I had hoped to keep this short, but I didn't manage. Here are some interesting pieces of evidence connecting Velka to dark: If I had to name Velka’s pardoner’s emote that we can’t get in DS1 I would call it “praise the moon”. Velka’s servant Oswald stands there in a pose that is an inverted praise the sun. (The “Well! What is it!” gesture Oswald gives us is quite different from his pose.) She is connected to occult damage through her rapier’s damage type and the occult ember being surrounded by crows. I think it is safe to assume that occult damage is dark damage due to the damage type of the dark hand in DS1 and DS3 and considering that Lords are weak to occult and the last surviving Lord after DS1, The Nameless King, is weak to dark. On a bit of a tangent I also believe Velka to be the mother of Priscilla the Crossbreed as Priscilla possesses the Life Hunt ability which the gods fear and the dagger made from her tail deals occult damage. It seems reasonable to me that Life Hunt is related to bleed damage and occult. And as I mentioned above I think it’s reasonable to assume that occult is dark. Therefore Priscilla’s Life Hunt is related to dark which I think she inherited from her mother Velka. Also Velka is always depicted as a woman with her face mostly covered by a hooded cloak and there is a hooded-cloaked-woman-with-a-child statue in the painted world that points directly to Priscilla. I think the religion in Irithyll was an extension of the Darkmoon covenant. There are all sorts of moon references in the city and in descriptions of the religion. I think that the people worshipped Dark Sun Gwyndolin until Pontiff Sulyvahn took over and manipulated the religion to suit whatever his own mysterious Profaned Flame related agenda was. The Pontiff’s Greatsword of Judgment description supports this theory, I think. I think it was Sulyvahn who declared worshiping the angels as heresy. The angels likely being the Corvian story tellers. Although I have always had a suspicion that the angels are connected to the Primordial Serpent(s) due to the statues depicting the serpents in Lothric all have angel wings. Now I’ll take a bit of a leap to connect some theoretical dots: Corvians tell stories about Priscilla. Priscilla is theoretically connected to Velka. Velka is theoretically connected to the Kaathe due to their mutual connections to the Sable Church in DS3 and the Darkwraiths in DS1. So, Corvians tell stories about Priscilla, Kaathe, Age of Dark, and Velka (The fuckered-up melted statues next to the serpent statues might be of Velka, but that may be a stretch). Prince of Lothric is into it, because fuck being burned alive to link the flame and likely his older sister Gertrude is into it. This not-linking-the-flame business does not support Sulyvahn’s Profaned Flame related agenda. Sulyvahn declares it all heresy and after imprisoning Gertrude for a while has her hauled off with the Corvian heretics to be devoured by Aldrich. Gertrude manages to not get devoured, loses here tongue and sight, changes her name to Rosaria, and starts putting to practice what she learned from the Corvians and/or Kaathe about Darkwraithing.
Vaati's stuff only gets better with age as we have the hindsight to see what he's right and wrong about and see how our views on the lore have grown over the years. Londor DLC prediction being prime example. That made the most sense from a lore perspective, but what we've got is equally as interesting now imo.
Your videos literally got me to try out the Dark Souls game. I have yet to finish the first game, but you've made it all the more interesting. Playing a game with such complex lore... and to have it all explained. Amazing work, man.
How quaint would it be for Velka to hold the final secrets and details. Her great crow delivers us into the Dark Souls world, and it seems only correct for her to likewise show us the end of all.
Honestly, while it may seem like it's better to grant Anri's wish of defeating Aldrich, I think that she's in a better place after you become the Lord of Hollows.
Wait. Look at the bonfires. They all constitute of a Coiled Sword, plus ashes and bones. The item that levels up a bonfire is an Undead Boneshard. Previously it was Humanities. If the Dark Sigil and Humanities are the same thing, burning Undead at a Bonfire (or maybe a larger, primordial Bonfire) might be the only way to truly keep the age of fire alive, by kindling the fire, and the only way to actually put an end to the curse of a Hollow, as everytime he revived he would be inside the bonfire, leaking his humanity in again. However, an "Ashen" one is someone who kept the perk of being undead, but lost the Dark Sigil when burned for a bonfire, as such, failing to kindle the age of Fire itself, and stopped losing humanity. A creature that can actually stop the age of fire and move into the age of men. Geez this channel gets more mindblowing every new video.
And although I have not played Demon's Souls yet and I'm talking out of brief readings, and I know that it is a spiritual antecessor to DS. This makes me think like there could be more than a virtual correlation between the two. Without the mechanic of humanity (through Ember, Effigy or Dark Soul), this could either mean that Demon's Souls happens during the Age of Ancients (There are Dragons, Serpent like creatures and Demons ruling over, and the world is covered in fog) or Demon's Souls happens during the Age of Man (the Gods are absolutely gone and the sigils no longer exist). It gives a new sense for Gods, as the few humans from the Age of the Ancients discovering the Fire, slaying the ancient creatures and vanquishing the fog and the darkness, and raising themselves to the level of Gods (seeing how you as a player who is a human can kill them without huge differences in stats). If Lord Gwyn as the main "God" is "afraid of the Dark" it would make sense for the Gods to want to keep the Age of Fire alight, and the way they did it was by creating a curse of Dark and offering salvation from it, this way they could always have the Dark Souls literally throwing themselves into the fire for it. This is so interesting.
Man such an old video. But anyway, the idea that Velka holds the last secrets is kinda metaphorical in a sense. Velka is related to the vow of silence miracle. Making her a goddess of silence in a sense. The last secrets of dark souls residing in silence is quite poetic in a sense, well it’s always poetic in dark souls but you know what I mean.
Considering how we encounter Friede in the first DLC, reckon we'll encounter Liliane and Velka in the final DLC? I would LOVE to return to new Londo, and personally, the only way I can think of ending the franchise to perfectly is to kill the sole remaining god.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that the name Londor was simply forgotten by time, since it's a city that exists since the dawn of the age of fire. The Sable Church of Londor seems to be a "perverted" version of the Spears of the Church. (Sable means black) So it's literally the Black Church, instead of being devoted to the gods and the age of fire they are devoted to mankind and the age of dark. The symbol in the sword of avowal is the same as the one in the Ringed City, there are many statues that carry a ring in their backs showing the weight placed upon then by the dark sign. The 3 sisters likely garnered many followers within the city and were probably exiled with their followers which later they later became Pilgrims of Londor.
well. praise the sun. somehow despite loving the souls series since forever. i have never known about vaati. i tend to just look for game release dates and such and discuss the lore with friends,. but this is lovely
Question though, Why Anri? I mean out of the hordes of undead why was Anri selected as chosen Spouse for the unkindled one? As from what is seen Anri lacks a lot of confidence & willpower when S/he is alone. Possible reason for a partner there?
The process of usurping the flame involves cramming one individual with as much darkness as humanly possible to give that person enough strength to overcome the will of the gods.
Another thing to note is that Velka could be the furtive pygmy that was so easily forgotten and that's why she's so important and powerful and yet she is quite hidden as said in the opening cutscene.
Na m8 I personally think the furtive Pygmy is Manus. The Pygmy found the dark soul and shared it with the hollows in the age of grey to create humans, therefore technically making him the first man, and therefore Manus.

Maybe it's too much to cover in a DLC? Perhaps they would have to do another game that includes it. Still sad

Tewi I like to lore a lot.
Boom.
man, your supposition just gave me goose bumps... i mean this could be a valid theory
Kaathe 4 Lyfe
Letting the fire fade is the best ending; Gwyn feared the dark, so he linked the flame himself, going against nature. When you let the flame fade in DS3, the Firekeeper says that this is how it was meant to be, and that flame shall return, but without gods. Just a world led by humans, nothing else.
it was going to happen anyway. the age of dark. besides. the kingdom is already dead by ds1. hollows are everywhere the land is infested with beasts. dragon decendants, demons. its all fucked already. might as well get the age of dark over with sooner rather than later imo.

"This is the only tale known by exiles, who believe it carries words of forgiveness. Cursed journeys, too, must ultimately come to an end."
I dunno man the wording on this sounds kinda like they're being tricked
@@OtepRalloma yeah I was about to say this
So I'm really hoping for 2 things from the Dark Souls 3 dlcs.
That sounds good.
If love how Angels are like something straight out of Berserk. Despite their... kinda noble, holyish facade, you can *feel* that something is off. They're probably eating babies or something. That's why they're so fat.
YouSoSpice
Those are actually just winged knights, the golden ones implied to be somehow "ascended" or more powerful, but still human knights who worship the actual angels. actual angels aren't really seen in the game as far as we know.
That sounds like a good idea, and very likely.
pdragon619 Ah, that's right.
Brendan Routh Uh. I always questioned who is that narrator. Interesting.
Brendan Routh That voice is the high priestess.
Morganthe but we also heard the same narrator at the beginning of the original Dark Souls.
Brendan Routh Could very well be Velka but i thought the Emma had the same voice. Idk
Morganthe according to IMDb the narrator was voiced by Pik Sen Lim and Emma by Joan Blackham, so it's a different (but similar) voice.
The Dark Sigil description is as follows:
"A black gaping hole in the flesh that resembles the brand of an Undead.
The darkness of humanity seeps from this bottomless pitch-back hole, the gap filled by the accumulation of the curse.
This Dark Sigil will never heal, but there is a tale told of a Fire Keeper who returned from the Abyss, and brought great comfort to a bearer of the curse."
Could the Fire Keeper who returned from the Abyss be Velka??
I'm assuming that the referenced firekeeper is the one who's soul you find at the top of the tower outside firelink shrine, since giving it to the firekeeper allows her to heal the dark sigil.
That makes sense although that would be assuming the fire keeper in the tower returned from the Abyss, which I doubt.
I wouldn't think that firekeeper had been to the abyss either, if it weren't for that quote about the firekeeper who returned from the abysss bringing great comfort to a bearer of the curse. What greater comfort is healing?
To me the great comfort of healing is referring to Velkas ability to bring Absolution and Dissolution.
Was Velka ever a firekeeper though? I was under the impression being a firekeeper was a human thing.

Then you might enjoy the Drakengard series, which spun off into the NIer series through time traveling insanity. It's weird but pretty awesome.

If Gwyn in his fear tipped the world with the Age of Fire, perhaps it's the job of Velka to return it to a more equitable darkness.
and perhaps it means the reverse aswell , velka wont let there be more darkness then light but at the same time no more light then darkness
Zero Kelvin The elimination of imbalance ?
Don’t you mean rightful vengeance (ie : retribution) ?
I don’t remember her being linked to balance.
Where's the Edwad Emberpants lore video?
I never realised how much I wanted this until now.
Eyyyyyyyy
my guess is that the crow dropped Edwad on his head on the way to Lordran, and when the bell woke him, he wasn't completely healed, thus The Retarded Unkindled
It would've been too much to ask for this little fad to have died down by now, right?
Hey man, Prepare to Cry is only a couple of Lore Videos away. Though really I think we'd be crying more for Edwad's Compatriots than the Hero himself.
Sigils/Signs problem = different translators + sloppy QA, maybe?
Is it also different in Japanese?
But who knows, maybe the deep waters could tie in bloodborne? lol
you should do a brief vid on Rosaria, or at least touch her lore briefly. She really intrigues me.
Yeah, she is so mysterious.
She should feature in the next vid on the angels!
Thanks man. Awesome videos by the way.
+VaatiVidya awesome, can't wait to hear your thoughts
The Atonement miracle reminds me a bit of the brand sacrifice from berserk. Having enemies and death drawn towards you, following you.
Yeah that's a pretty good point. He drew pretty heavily from the berserk themes in this one, hey
+VaatiVidya You replied to two of my comments, I feel special :)
same
my thoughts exactly. The Outrider Knights also remind me of the Berserker Armor always.
BAZUSO
+Avarickan so true 0_o
+Avarickan That is some next level lore connotation. If you polish up this theory I'm sure that you could make some really interesting speculations with it!
Bread-Sama Thanks. Now to the polishing...
3:00 gotta admit, the “those who fuck up” amongst more formal language and theatrical tone made me laugh WAY more than it should have
theory: the more sin there is in the world, the stronger and more influential velka becomes, as she has more stuff to punish people for. If this is true it makes perfect sense that she's punishing the world for the first sin and therefore is one of the most powerful gods, no matter how hidden and furtive she is
#makelondorgreatagain
The gods are stealing our jobs so we're gonna build a wall and we're gonna make them pay for it.
If you look at all the craziness thats going on with Oolacile, with Londor, with Castle Drangleic- Theres something going on.
nah, nah. We're gonna build a wall around the fire, and we're gonna make the fire pay for it!
Notice that the first place you go to is "The High WALL of Lothric". I think there's a conspiracy going on here...
According to an item description it also appeared out of nowhere. Coincidence? I think NOT
I actually like that idea that Velka is punishing the world for the first sin, if true it would fit her nature I dare say almost perfectly.
Oh that sounds like anal with mudbone
Suddenly everything makes sense.
100% CINDER!
I found the ending of fire ending also very fitting. Paradoxically, the linking of the fire ending was the least fitting imo.
Omg unkindled is Kratos confirmed
Maybe the reason is cuz she lives in a place where people don't really die such as hollows so the game doesn't count the hollows she kills but the non hollows count cuz they don't come back
+Ahmed Rashid I think they would have made something like that more clear in her item descriptions.
+Dimitris Rodriguez And giants potentially. They burn humans in a big fuck-off furnace so the Hitler comparison is pretty accurate.
To be fair, I can't walk a dog through the Undead Settlement without it and all of the inhabitants attacking me

Oh my, that's funny as hell
We'll build a wall. It'll be a great wall. A luxurious wall. And the Lords of Cinder will pay for it!
Goddess Velka, Meme Queen
I hope kaathe and Frampt re-apper in the DLC, their designs were so great
The games have some great monster designs, but Kaathe and Frampt freak me out in a way the others don't. The humanish shape of their faces just look wrong.
Kaathe is gonna get this dark party started right.
+Corrector1 just imagine them revamped with new graphics like the halo 2 gravemind. The original one was almost silly looking, the new one looks terrifying.
"That's dumb. You're dumb."
-Kaathe
I would hope the Primordial Serpents make a return, or have a larger presance as they were one of the most influential forces in the first Dark Souls, guiding the Chosen Undead down the two paths, to Link the Fire or seek to become the Dark Lord.
"I'm confident that this is where the DLC will be based"
Well, this aged like milk
Milk doesn't age for years...
not totally because of Vilhelm and Elfriede
It's literally a black hole, which is nothing else than the remains of a massive star that died
@@kc230285 A black hole wouldn't specifically only be a massive star that has died it's a lump of matter that's compressed below it's respective Schwarzschild radius. Basically a point where the curvature of spacetime is so severe that it enfolds around itself.
I feel the same way, the Flame, is the sun, the age of fire brings light.
I like ops post.
@@kc230285 Is it actually a black hole? I must've missed that bit of exposition because I thought it was a stagnant eclipse.

+VaatiVidya WHERE IS THE EDWAD AND CREW LORE!!!
19:28
bird flies through the wall and the camera stops like "uhhhhh...wtf? you didn't see that CUT TO NEXT SCENE"
Velka must be a really sad character, she had to do horrible things for the common good, torturing her children for an eternity, and in the end it is her pity for them that dooms all
I find it funny how in finnish the word Velka means "debt"
She absolves stuff. Thats cool

Clutch rings aren't in DS1 lmao
true lol
so theres ONE thing that could help explain some more things. i dont know quite what it means but if you look at the bridge thing where you fight the dragon slayer amour and look at the statues you can see primordial serpent statues meaning lothric held these serpents to something
to me that pretty clearly indicated that Frampt was still around and was still seeking Lords.
+Android 19 perhaps. But why would lothric a people who was obsessed linking the fire ally or think highly of someone who's sole purpose was to *not* link the fire and bring the age of man

I dont care how long the videos are, i love watching long lore videos that go over every possible theory like you do. Keep up the good work
Hey, i wanted to tell you a theory about the firelink greatsword.
So tell me what tou think about this theory
your dum your missing the age of the Lord's but keep going
It's interesting to say the least. Honestly though I think the sword itself existed before the age of fire but was renamed the Firelink Greatsword after Gwyn discovered the first flame.
Few things off, and the first of which being that the dragon weapons all look like the respective dragon it came from or at least has a nice likeness to it. Secondly, no dragons were metallic. Third, the Firelink Greatsword is much too refined to be a dragon weapon as all dragon weapons save the Moonlight Greatsword all look a bit beastial and raw. That's just from the weapon standpoint though. There are quite a bit more things that also bunk that but it doesn't matter as it is but a theory.
what if Kaathe and Velka are working together, and the angels are some form of creature made of both man and bird because they were a tool meant to be used by both of them to help drive man.
maybe that's why Lothric doesn't want to link the fire.
Raven Master maybe framt is also working with them maybe he is the angel that visited gurtrude he is like a an inside man
Note : pardon my English (;
Imagine Vaati saying "those who fuck up" in a modern lore video
Never noticed that terminology thrown around so continuously in reference to the Dark Sign... a shackle. Makes even more sense having completed the Ringed City and learning of the Ringed Knights.
Amazing video, Vaati... of a truly amazing series, From.
I especially love your comment about the Age of Fire being undying, trying to die, and the Bonfires continuously being fueled by both man and humanity to continue resetting the world. This happens both from a story aspect, as well as a gameplay aspect. And, its just genius.
So Velka hates the flame. Maybe the Izalith incident wasn't a fuck-up and actually a sabotage.
We know that Oolacile and the corruption of Artorias & Friends was an inside job, so I wouldn't put it past them.
Interesting.
Don't all the gods hate the flame?
Emmanuel Chaus No, they used the flame to gain power, and their act of relinking is their way of trying to preserve their power.
Izalith happened because if a crack in her kiln (how you get in excluding the chaos covenant path), so maybe Velka used her magic to cause the crack in the kiln
You know what they should’ve had, a dlc that changes based on which ending you get
Ah, now *that* would be something!! It'll never happen, but perhaps a skilled enough modder could make something like that?

I can see Velka being a final boss in one of the DLCs.
From LOVES hinting at characters and then having them fought in DLC.
The Londor ending was my first one, and thus my headcanon one. It was very thrilling, made you feel mighty!
Yeah I feel you on that, its the most memorable one for me as well.
same
I litrally had to see wiki for step by step to get that ending in my 4th run. Very easy to mess up.

Velka's link to Crows could make her connected to the Pursuer from Dark Souls II. Would be neat to see him again.
Well, seeing him again would truly honor his name.
Damnit you're right.
Seriously, the Pursuer was so cool, i really liked him as a character.
well here's one thing that can certainly tie velka to DS2. The fact that many characters you come across refer to you as a "sinner" when they find out you're undead. Always wondered why undead were associated with sinning in DS2,maybe the people of drangleic just developed that superstition?
lame and easy boss
Here are some interesting pieces of evidence connecting Velka to dark:
If I had to name Velka’s pardoner’s emote that we can’t get in DS1 I would call it “praise the moon”. Velka’s servant Oswald stands there in a pose that is an inverted praise the sun. (The “Well! What is it!” gesture Oswald gives us is quite different from his pose.)
She is connected to occult damage through her rapier’s damage type and the occult ember being surrounded by crows.
Now I’ll take a bit of a leap to connect some theoretical dots:
Corvians tell stories about Priscilla.
14:00 Michael Jackson usurping the flame.

Where is the Edwad Emberpants lore!?
Dead, hopefully
with that face i hope his just tutorial hollow
Don't quote me, but I did hear somewhere that Vaati said he's working on it
Do u know if Vaati will be doing a lore video about the Dark Lord and Francis of the Filth?
That Anri moment. Ugh. Still gives me the feels 6 years later. 😪
Honestly, while it may seem like it's better to grant Anri's wish of defeating Aldrich, I think that she's in a better place after you become the Lord of Hollows.
i like it that you put in the sources in the bottom. you're one of the best DS historiens!
***** Huh, that is fair. Like I said, I haven't played it, just read a bit. But it could have been an interesting nod.
that's the best description of an unkindled I've seen, good job :)
Thank you :D
People seem to always forget that while Light and Dark are opposite, Flame encompasses both, since Flame is Disparity.
Vaati saying “Those who fuck up” is so funny
Is the ringed City pretty much londor, land of Hollows?.
There's always something new to learn about the world of Dark Souls it's so amazing
I'm fighting for my Cheetos back.
None can stop me.
well. praise the sun.
somehow despite loving the souls series since forever.
i have never known about vaati.
i tend to just look for game release dates and such and discuss the lore with friends,.
but this is lovely
Pretty sure Furtive Pygmy has been referred to as male
Na m8 I personally think the furtive Pygmy is Manus. The Pygmy found the dark soul and shared it with the hollows in the age of grey to create humans, therefore technically making him the first man, and therefore Manus.
I'd really like to see an episode on Rosaria, since she seems like some interesting, untapped lore.
Man..through your narration dark souls has become the best story i've ever heard!
