My husband and I have done this a few times. Last time, the waitress ratted us out. We purchased an older couple's breakfast. Next thing we know,they came to thank us. My husband told the man, thank you for your service. He was a WWII vet. In the end, everyone was crying.
Sometimes the ghostly gesture needs to have something solid to attach itself to. Maybe you needed the thank you more than the elderly couple needed the gesture. A loop is now created instead of a wave.
