EXO covers varied music genre. So far you’ve only seen their bad-ass songs - there’s still one left, Lotto. But they also do pop, R&B, ballads, even techno. For sure, you won’t get bored figuring them out. And their LIVE performances are even way better! Enjoy your EXO journey!

Fun fact when Exo first debuted
They were called a “flop” group because of their unique sounds and concept. They went through such a tough time during their beginning years (their first time performing they got payed with rice bags) but now they are one of the top boy bands in Kpop. Check out their song Tempo.

I'm a hardcore EXO-L but when it comes to "Bad Boy of Kpop" title, that belongs to BigBang. If you want to be more into what is EXO is all about, I suggest you go next to EXO's debut MV which is MAMA back in 2012. Watching both version of EXO-K and EXO-M is a MUST.

I LOL’d so hard at that “bad boys” comment that I had to pause. I mean, they do a great job of it, and I can see why someone might think that… but they’re also just a bunch of puppies that with a slogan that’s literally “let’s love!” I love it, though. Originally we thought in Exo monster MV is when their enemy the RED FORCE in disguise as the government swat team came to capture EXO as we see them rebelling agaisnt them. But fast forward to 2019 during Obsession Era we realize the plot twist that this back in 2016 during monster Era, we mightve been watching their evil clones X-EXO all along without knowing😅 and it would also explain why their storyline mv from the beginning has been getting darker and darker each time with every comeback.

As you are starting to see, everything SM does is connected to EXO's storyline like one giant graphic novel or mystery movie series. Each new MV or project that is created is like another chapter in SM's SM Culture Universe. And "Monster" is another piece of that story.
"Monster" was released in 2016, so there are 9 members in this MV.
As the English lines in "Monster" say ... They're "Creeping, Creeping Creeping .... Creeping in your heart babe" "You can call me Monster (because) I'm creeping in your heart babe." "She got me goin' crazy." The song's called "Monster," so the words are about acting like a monster: "Don't be afraid, love is the way ... I'm sorry, you make me sooo craaaazzzy, you know you dooooo."
So the floating watch and the car that is on fire in reverse, etc., I think was -- on top of being a metaphor in the story -- also supposed to be the members using their superpowers. And the snake, like a monster, mirrors the beat of the song, which kind of slithers like a snake as a metaphor for the way the guy slithers in and out of the relationship stealing warmth and affection from the girl, but in the end, leaving her cold and alone like a cold-blooded snake, etc. The snake is also red, so it is thought to be linked to something involving the Red Force.
However, the lyrics of the song have very little to do with the story in the MV. If you want to know what the song is about, you should look up an English translation of the lyrics. Because the lyrics tell a different story than the story in the MV. In the song the members are talking about a girl and they are telling the girl that "You can call me Monster" because I know I am bad for you and I will ruin you. I know that when we are over that I will have destroyed everything that is good about you, but I don't care because I want you so much that it doesn't matter to me. But the MV is about EXO's origin story and about the fact that they have come to Earth on a mission to stop the Red Force from corrupting humanity.
Also, the majority of the choreography for "Monster" has to do with the members using their powers, so when/if you watch the dance practice and/or watch a live performance, if you know what you are looking for, you will see that each move is done for a very specific reason.
The X they make to represent EXO is only the beginning of the story in their choreography. Every move of the choreography has been designed to be an extension of their story and it uses elements of their dance to represent several of the members using their powers. For example, D.O. has the power of super strength, so during his part in the song and choreography you will see that he waves his hands and the other members are pushed away from him or pulled toward him. When you see Suho in the middle of the group and they have a hold of his arms, he rotates his body around like swirling water because Suho has the power to control water. Xiumin has the power to control snow/ice/frost, so during one part of the choreography you will see that each of the members pause as if frozen as he moves in front of them. Sehun has the power to control wind, so during his parts, you will see the other members shuffle around him as if they are creating a windstorm. And the part where they are sitting on the ground is supposed to represent a sundial -- EXO gets their power from the eclipse and their powers are affected by planetary and solar phenomenon, so the sundial is meant to represent the passing of time and their connection to the sun.
You should also make note that EXO's next MV for their song "Lotto" is a prequel to "Monster," so when you watch "Lotto," if you keep in mind what you saw happen in "Monster" is what is going to take place after or in conjunction with the events in "Lotto", the story might make more sense.
How "Monster" and "Lotto" tie into EXOs larger storyline is a little open ended, but because "Lotto" is thought to be the prequel to "Monster," I think the story starts out in "Lotto" where the members have somehow infiltrated this big gambling ring and are undercover as they work to uncover a clue or something they need in order to accomplish their tasks here on Earth. I think the underground gambling establishment is run by a gang of bad guys who are probably members of the Red Force.
"Lotto" is where we are introduced to a girl who is being held captive. And ultimately, I think what EXO are trying to do is rescue the girl from the Red Force, but they are trying to do it without blowing their cover or being found out. So, that's why you see in "Lotto," and continued in "Monster," the members are fighting against the police because the police have come in to take down the gambling ring and rescue the girl, which is also what EXO are trying to do. However, the members of EXO don't want to be discovered, so they play along as if they are part of the bad guys. EXO are supposed to be going about their tasks here on Earth incognito, and humanity is never supposed to find out that EXO are other-worldly beings, so they are trying to keep a low profile.
As we see in the end of "Monster," Baekhyun disguises himself as one of the police and helps the other members escape from the back of the police van before they are taken to jail and/or captured by the Red Force, etc.
You also see Lay, EXO's Chinese member, crouched in the middle of what looks like a pile of people -- I'm not sure whether these are the FBI agents, or if these are members of the Red Force -- and I think he is checking to make sure they are OK and possibly trying to use his power of healing to fix things and heal the injured.
Because some theories believe that EXO are traveling between time periods and dimensions, I think in "Monster" they also might be showing how some of the members are arriving on scene at different moments in the timeline of events that are taking place in the MV -- the members don't necessarily arrive at the location together. For instance, you also see Kai standing on or near a giant pile of people as well, and he seems to be standing over them. Some have pointed to this as possibly showing evil X-EXO Kai -- Kai's alter ego clone that was created by the Red Forced and introduced in EXO's "Obsession" MV -- who has done something bad, but I think this may be showing good EXO Kai, who has just shown up at that moment, observing what has taken place. Because Kai has the power of teleportation he is the one that is in charge of bringing the members together and traveling between time and space, so I think he has shown up from a different time or place and is now trying to figure out what has happened, etc.
In EXO's "Obsession" MV the members in the bright colored clothing with the crazy makeup and hair are supposed to be X-EXO and the ones in the black or dark colored clothing are supposed to be EXO. So, in the parts where they are dressed in all black in "Monster" I think this is showing EXO, and where you see them in the clothing with red accents, this might by showing X-EXO. At the time when "Monster" was first released, we had no idea about X-EXO's existence, but since "Obsession", we have started to go back and reanalyze some of their older MVs, and it appears that what we thought was always EXO, may have been in fact X-EXO some of the time.
As you can see, EXO's story is always evolving and changing, and just when you think you have one part understood, SM introduces a new piece of the story and changes the direction of the narrative.
Also, yet again, pay attention to when you see red and blue light. As mentioned, in EXO's MVs when you see red light this is where the Red Force has control, and when you see blue light this is where EXO has the upperhand. However, if you see purple light this is when EXO and the Red Force are battling for control.
Unfortunately, as you can see, what makes EXO's storyline even more difficult to follow is the fact that nothing is ever in chronological order. So you really have to pay close attention to every detail, to even begin to make connections.

Well, it's kind of hard to explain what's going on in the monster MV without giving a hint about the group's concept.
EXO are aliens from outside our solar system, a place called EXO Planet, they came to Earth to save our planet, as the Red Force destroyed their home planet. During Monster's MV they are trying to escape from RF.
One of the members, Baekhyun, during this MV is a double agent.
The concept of the MV goes far beyond that, but it would take me hours to explain about parallel universes, time travel and everything that involves the EXO concept.
I highly recommend you guys react to the MV for Lucky One, it was released along with the MV for Monster.

Please more exo! if you want to get to know them i suggest watching the mvs in order from pre debut onwards and the group/individual guides which explains exo's concept. What is love and history are their pre debut releases and you'd be equally impressed with their vocals 10 years ago as you are today. There's also the 2 sub units exo cbx and exo sc, plus member solo album/eps so plenty of exo content if you like their stuff.

I dig you guys alot, so I subscribed. Not just for Exo, though make no mistake, doing alot more Exo WILL lead to subscriptions like you won't believe. But if you do enjoy Exo like you seem, it wouldn't hurt to dive deeper into their content and learn more about them. They are one of the most popular and beloved kpop groups of all time. When I, as a born and bred American discovered Kpop in the mid 2000s, I never looked back...Exo debuted in 2011, Bts debuted in 2013, and Blackpink wasn't around yet...I love all of them, because they all bring their own styles to the kpop scene...but you have no idea all the different talent kpop has to offer...you will come across many in due time. It's a world I've been lost in for years and I love it.
But Exo became superstars pretty much overnight starting in 2012, worldwide. They've toured the world and the States right out of debut...unheard of for a very young group. So Exo is a household name. Younger groups grew up watching Exo.
But know this...Exo are singers more than dance or rap...singers. People worldwide discovered their amazing vocal talent way back, and it attracted a massive worldwide fandom. They love to sing, and are r&b based, but do all genres. They are more old school vibe, groove, love songs and bangers. They're incredible. Why don't you take a break from mvs and try a live stage to mix it up, get a taste of them on stage...here's a link to a couple songs, a small segment of one of their concerts, it's a bit hype, but blast it on your headphones and join the party. Don't wait for a consensus...not many people know this link...but being an OG fan, I'm telling you, this is fire!
