For an old SD40-2, she was movin right along! Can't beat those 645E3 prime movers. Robust and versatile things, they are.
I love seeing a freight locomotive hauling revenue passenger service. "I can only haul freight? Hold my box cars and watch this".
Fantastic catch!
Well in Brazil SD40-2 did use as a passenger train back in the day
I know Amtrak has Maintenance issues but it still brings a tear of pride to my eye to see an old single Emd rescuing two newer GE's. Just the visual is enough, forget about what the actual reason is. Great Video.
Not many engines can beat an SD40-2's ruggedness.
Tompa
The SD40-2 is simply the best! All the GE Dash 7 (with the same age than the SD40-2), and GE Dash 8 were retired, sold or scrapped, while the SD40-2 still alive on the battlefield. You can be sure that when the Dash 9/AC4400CW be retired, some SD40-2 will still in service.
Wow! A Santa Fe locomotive pulling a train that was originally of Santa Fe heritage! The Super Chief returns!
The Santa Fe Super Chief has made a comeback!

I’m happy that BNSF is keeping Burlington Northern and Santa Fe heritage liveries.
They're not heritage units, they just have not been repainted yet
I love the friendly engineer on that F59phi waving the paper
What an amazing piece of video. To catch a santa fe patch in 2015 is just incredible in my book.
I ride Amtrak fairly often and always love to see rail fans as we blow through a town.
if that SD-40 could think anything it'd probably be thinking "god damnit im 30 years older than these genesis loco's and yet here i am coming to their rescue"
Actually 20 because 816 was one of the first P40DC's ordered in 1992 and 80 was ordered in 1995 and built in 1992. SD40-2's were built in 1972
Solowarrior1221 well the Genesis has been out in the 90’s, so it’s 20 years old
That's a perfect way of putting it. That's why railroad companies should have kept GP9s, and the like instead of replacing them and 38s and 38-2s with freaking 70Ms and ES44ACs.
He caught the same train ironically... 456

He even caught 452 again too! 1:36

the old girl still doing it!!!!!! priceless
that sd40-2 is a switch engine for the city of flagstaff AZ and when the p42s reached town they blocked up traffic so the city lent them the engine for the trip i just didnt realize it made it all the way to California
I don't think the city of Flagstaff lent Amtrak anything ... BNSF owns the locomotive, not the government. Also remember that while a locomotive might be used for local/yard switching for a while at a certain location, it will get rotated out and replaced with another one for maintenance etc.
Damn, that SD40 is hauling it fast!
Parece mó legal
One EMD locomotive does the work of two General Electric locomotives + pulls them along as ballast
Those Amtrak engines always break down not surprised that they got rescued great catch miss Santa Fe
i remember when I was like 7 or 6 Santa Fe trains like the first one would always pass by across from my house.. i miss these Santa Fe trains ): and such a nice horn !
I love the rescues of Amtrak trains. They are just so awesome.
LOL You'd think the Southwest Chief would've been later than ever! I swear, I was only able to catch that train twice out of all the times I've heard it pass by my school back when I lived in Texas!
COOL!! SD40-2 and an Amtrak, epic moment!!!

Santa Fe Super Chief Brought Back to life, I wish an FP45 could lead!
With all these new locomotives debuting, I’m sure gonna miss the sound of an f59 hammering towards you
Who else noticed in the fourth and fifth train, the guy was hitiing his paper on the dashboard like "This job sucks. -_-"
Ashura The Hedgehog Morse Code...
Lol you saw it to?
phillyslasher I never see them wave down here.

Funny to see that SD 40 saving the day..When I worked for Amtrak in the 90's they had I believe a former Santa Fe (really faded out paint) SD49 or maybe a GP something as a yard switcher and MOW engine...We don't see Santa Fe or BNSF equipment here in the Boston area very often..There is an oil train that is up in Maine that comes from out west with UP equipment on it... Great videos, you've got a new subscriber...
I really love the quality of your videos.
That first scene is very reminiscent of the later years of ATSF.
Am I the only one who hates the godawful P3 on the Santa Fe? That SD40 either needs a K3LA or RS3L, just like Santa Fe days. Nice catches!
I think you are the only one. There were SD40-2s with P3 horns back in the ATSF days ... at least in the early 80s when I lived in Flagstaff. They weren't common, but they did exist. K3LAs were more common and the RS3L was definitely ubiquitous.
Both Southwest Chiefs stopped in Albuquerque and stabbed SD40-2s on point. BNSF 1815 EAST and 1755 WEST. Thanks Amtrak for the scraps. Anyhow 1755's P3 horn (rare for Santa Fe) is sounding at-home in Cali.
I kinda do feel sad at the Amtrak being towed by the SD40-2 because P40DC 816 there is my #1 Favorite of all Genesis Locomotives ever built...
Amtrak 456 engineer was being super nice to you spencer
how lucky to see one its really rare now a days since bn and sf merges u can mostly see bnsf paint scheme but not in santa fe paint scheme
SD-40: *_i am stronk_*
Definitely pretty rare, especially a Bluebonnet
Hey I’m gonna be going to Los Angeles in April and we’re staying somewhere in Anaheim. Are the street running tracks on Santa Ana Avenue used a lot?
Hey Spencer, nice video! I wanted to ask what external microphone you use for ur camera, I'm in need of one, and want a few ideas. Much appreciated, thanks.
It’s a shame that 1755 was given an E-bell. :(
that same P40 (816) had to be towed by NS 2771 on Amtrak 48 2 months before that.
EMD having to rescue GEs? And a EMD engine thats at least 30 to 40 years older than those genesis engines at that. How could GE replace EMD if they cant even handle mearly a decade and a half of usage? I bet f40s didnt break down all the time
trains
Well, what if there was no engines available? Then BNSF was kind enough to send one of they're engines.P42s OR any GE engines rarely break down.
Nothing to do with the locomotives, Amtrak is just shitty at keeping their trains and crew working.
You can find video and photo of almost every railroad rescuing Amtrak trains, be it Chessie GP30s, Southern Pacific Tunnel Motors, Santa Fe SD40-2s, Union Pacific SD60s, Even CSX has rescued Amtrak a few times.
And it seems every news story about some major train derailment or collision, is at the fault of or somewhat to blame of Amtrak.
phillyslasher Yeah.
+phillyslasher you need to get off the California weed bro. Emd engines are 20 time's more reliable then ge engines and for your information the only time emd made a shit engine was the sd45, sdp45 and sd50. Sd50's are now sd50-2 for csx and norfolk southern sd50 are sd40e basically are internals of a sd40-2 now the sd60 and sd70 that goes for the m, m2 mac and ace they proven to be more reliable then any emd 645 20cyl engine out there, of course they don't make them anymore do to emd 710 prime movers are proven success. stop putting shit out there that's false because the biggest piece of shit on the rails are GE engines.
Ok see a SF engine is rare but with Amtrak! 🤯 nice catch

Nice! Do you use an external mic, if so what kind?
Now we need a catch of a old steam locomotive that paused its excursion to rescue an Amtrak train
And said locomotive is probably about 40 years old
A lot of the engineers are waving!
Great Catch And Nice Video!
Pretty rare to see a freight train here in South Orange County with full hoppers cars. Normally we only get certain freight trains like autoracks and daygos, because more people here prefer shipping it on trucks instead of trains. So seeing a freight train with full hoppers are pretty darn rare.
Actually no. Before 2000, south OC got lots of freights cause the port was open and there were also less scheduled surfliner, Metrolink, and coaster trains back then. After 2000, passenger service ramped up and the port in San Diego closed therefor killing off the many intermodal and other freights
sorry about this chief needed to be rescued but it’s cool to see a Santa Fe that came to the rescued
These railroad signal crossings, Norwalk ,Pioneer, and Los Nietos, now have the bell/gong circuit connected to the lamp flashing circuit. SCAX & PUC ordered this change. Other BNSF x-ing signals in most other areas have the bell/gong circuit controlled by the master/GCP controller relay, which means bell shuts off when gates rise. This is still the current standard work installation procedure.
Not only was a rare ex-Santa fe sd40-2 rescuing an Amtrak train but behind it was a P40DC
Nice catch with the Santa Fe BNSF EMD
the station crossing sounds like center and mesquite st., the 1 way streets in arlington, tx, where i live
GREAT CATCHES!!!!
Nice p3 on the SD40
Very Nice Diesel horn on that Burlington Northern Santa Fe Dash- 9
Great Video!!!
BNSF 1755 Tales on Springfield Railroad like Ben
Can anyone tell me this? If Amtrak breaks down anywhere in the country, do freight railroads charge Amtrak for the assistance or is it a matter of we need to get you out of the way so our freight can get through?
Yes and yes, except on the Northeast Corridor where Amtrak is on their own.
Is that a reason why freights have 2 to 3 locomotives Lol
@@fullreddotsight8300 No, most freights need that power, but keep an ES44 more than they need in case of a failure.

that was like 463's horn in that 2017-2018 era
I went to the original place and encountered another train it was so different 7 years from now
I saw Santa Fe 1755 at a BNSF yard today.

Nice catches bro!
Does the Amtrak crew continue to operate the train or does the replacement locomotive engineer and conductor take over?
Yes, Amtrak crew continue to operate.
The Santa Fe super chief is back
Hey it’s Ben from Tales On Springfield Railroad.
cool video can you tell me where it at
19 years since Santa Fe merged with Burlington Northern... and that thing STILL has not seen the paint booth....
That Metrolink startled my balls off.
I like that EMD
Yea I kinda expected a P40 to be pulled
Anyway the second train had horizon cars, not amfleets.
super chief's ghost lol
Benjamin from Tales on Springfield Railroad!
That must have been the fastest that SD40-2 has gone in a while. Typically they’re geared for 65 mph maximum, which is lower than the BNSF system maximum for rescuing Amtrak trains at 70 mph. Wonder what it was like.
Whether a locomotive is an EMD or GE does not matter. Poor maintenance or the lack of routine maintenance contribute to failures of different types. With our dumb politicians in Washington cutting Amtrak's budget more and more every year, there will be more failures.
Amtrak has old equipment. They need new equipment, but again, Washington cuts the budget so new equipment cannot be purchased.
If Amtrak is ever privatized, or at the very least removed from government funding and funded other ways, things might change for the better.
Dennis B hopefully trump with his $1 Trillion will donate at least 100 billion to the railroads, or even better 500-600 billion.
BoomClashPirate-Games and trains Trump recently slashed funding for Amtrak, endangering passenger rail in the USA once again.
Old equipment? The oldest are only 22, newest just 17. These engines are pampered, they are never rushed, take their good old time, take lots of rests, and are pulling trains of negligible weight. 4000 horsepower, seldom asked to exceed 60mph, and usually paired with a helper engine or two. A freight engine, take the P32's for example, have 3100 horsepower, and haul quite a bit more cars at similar speed, all day long. Those things are just now being retired from Norfolk Southern in their 30's.
why are the headlights on the nose instead of above the cab
Our employer work standard and installation guide still has the bell circuit connected from the signal flasher unit. So wrong!!!
Some of our x-ings use the horizontal position(when gates are in down position) to mute the bell. However, the bell power is still from the flashing circuit. Another weird configuration! We are not regulated by the CPUC, we are regulated by PUCO(Ohio). Also our flash rate for the signals must be 50 rates per min, compared to BNSF standard of 60 rates per min. If we used BNSF standards( flash rate only), we would of committed a LEVEL 3 problem/violation. Bad News!!!
Amtrak 456 Is Nice Clean And Shiny
Rrrrrrr SD40-2 in yellowbonett no finer and reliable locomotive .. style muscle and beauty ..
do you know that guy that was driving 456?
Awesome Video
9:00 You can see that bell in action!!
wonderful catch sch a long container train Remember to to keep your mic 5-10 feet from a train to avoid the audio going into the red . Nevertheless a brilliant catch ...
I said when the F59PHI 452 was coming, I said at least that horn is close to 452's horn, wait, it is 452. How did I know
When I saw the Carlsbad one I knew it immediately
Not just a SD40-2,... but a Bluebonnet!!!
Why did the surf liner drivers always wave that paper in the windshield
Fouled p5, right?
Poor GE. Any loco is going to turn to junk when routine maintenance is consistently deferred.
