We run only black water (from toilets) through our septic system. This reduces the workload on the septic. Gray water from showers and kitchens is used to irrigate a small group of fruit trees. Washer discharge waters a shade tree to a small swale. Our simplified septic system has functioned without maintenance for 16 years. Due to its simplicity, we installed a separate septic system for our guest house. As we don't use any medications and processed foods, we protect our septic as a living ecosystem within our rancho.

I love that you include your boys in helping out. I remember as a child helping my parents weed the flower beds. My Dad had a lawn business on the side to help earn money and I would go with him in the summer months to help him. Because of that I do landscaping and gardening and am a Master Gardner, helping others with their gardening issues. You are teaching your boys so much respect for the land and plants. It's fun to watch their enthusiasm as it reminds me of being a child in the yard with my own parents. Wonderful memories.

The first home I built, in 1975, was a small one room,off grid, board and batten cabin with an outhouse. In 1978 when my son was born I realized that I needed a real bathroom! It was no fun anymore walking through knee deep in snow, in the middle of a New Hampshire winter, at night, in below 0 degrees! So we sold the cabin and got a house with TWO bathrooms!! 😂 So I understand what it means to have a real bathroom! Congratulations and enjoy the wonders of plumbing!! 🛀🏻🚽😁. FUN VIDEO ❤

Christine here, don’t often comment but absolutely love your channel. Your forethought is amazing and your future certainly looks bright! Watching you from a cold winter’s afternoon here in Pretoria where we have had no water since 6am yesterday morning(Saturday) due to maintenance on the system. I am so proud of you getting away from any toxins in your home. I had breast cancer in 1997 and I did that long ago. Even thought it came back 2011,2016,17,18 and 19. So I am constantly upping my game. Hopefully you will share the products you decide on and share them with us. Thanx for another wonderful episode. I will arrive in Portugal and begin working on my land with a river in central. I am interested to see how your system works. I have nothing on my land but a river. Oh John, how I feel for you! My husband hates plumbing with a passion! He can’t believe how little has changed over the years and just hates working on it. So sorry for you! I used for 8 years such a waste tank but - seeing you - I consider I was lucky. The company which sold us the tank included in the price the whole installation process. They digged the hole, digged the grooves for the leaking water under the garden, made all the electrics, leaving outside a control panel. They also gave us a lot of chemicals to drop in the toilet but, in time, we replaced the chemicals with... yogurt 🙂. Good luck further, the tank will be a great relief for the family!
Wow! What an accomplishment. Plumbing can be the biggest challenge of all. You two are so resourceful in wading your way through the assembly of your new unit. So impressive !!!
I've never seen such a setup but it looks very eco friendly. Best of luck with it to do as it says. It looks very interesting. Wondering if they have such things used in the US. I am sure they must perhaps. We are on our property for 50 years now and never an issue with the old fashioned big cement tank and inlet and outlet. Never any issues and we check it every so often. I do put a bit of yeast down it every couple times a year, not much but it keeps it active, that or a bit of raw hamburger. I learned that from the owners of this property originally who used it in their place for year. They were indeed real old time homesteaders. Most all of their assist on such ideas of 50 years ago have exactly worked for us over the many years.
Best of luck to you and anxious to see how it all works out. One thing I never put down the drain are coffee grounds. They do better in the garden.......they tend to plug up lines to the septic works.

Fascinating! And a real wake-up call for those of us who are probably not as mindful as we might be. Being plumbed to the local water district can make you less careful about what you let go slinking down your drain. When we were more rural, with a septic tank, there was more awareness of what went down the pipes. So, thanks for this episode that has got me thinking about my own habits.
Also, the next time I need plumbing help from my handyman, I’ll lead with a bag of gummies! John, you are good sport.

Cracking project. 👏👏. If this has been mentioned before ( lots of comments to go through ! ), I apologise, but......the cable entries to the two grey boxes ( the small 85mmx85mm one and the timer socket. The cable entries need protecting with stuffing glands, 16mm on the small box and I think, 20mm (maybe 25mm) on the timer socket. This protects the cable sheath and stops water/ condensation entering the boxes. 10 minute job.

My dad was an engineer and basically could fix anything and as his child assistant on many projects, he would always say “there 2 things that are not my favorite and that’s plumbing and electric bc both gave him a headache so marry a plumber or an electrician” 😂😂. Good team work with your septic tank. I believe everyone needs to learn basics about everything. I will attempt to fix everything that breaks and leave the plumbing and major electrical to real tradesmen. I love being on septic and well water.

I'm I remember my Dad doing the same thing you. I ws raised in the state o Oregon, which has been a green state since the 50s. In those years, the rest of America thought we were the crazy state. But my Dad had a list of things we didn't put down the pipe. We put it with or farm animal waste and were used for our crops. I'm pleased to see you doing the same thing. I'm still doing things green. I loved watching your boys trying to help you.
