The sound blossoms... That is the word I searched for. When instrument really starts to vibrate the way it was intended it saturates with it's own vibration even in piano mode. It's a moment of sheer bliss for violinist.
Nah, that is just her with bad technique, poor intonationd and unfortunate sound "desire". Applying pressure to the violin and having tension in the right thumb achieves that ugly sound. My teacher said once, lending me his Stradivarius for a moment, "This instrument is like a Ferrari: if you know how to drive, you fly. I you don't know how to drive, you crash".
Beautiful playing, thoughtful voiceover, with intelligent insights into the violin's sound. It absolutely blows my mind that this is Paganini's actual violin. Amazing. Did I mention the playing was superb? :)
I was in the room at the museum to look at the instrument. Bruce Carlson was cool enough to take the instrument out of the case so we could look at it in further detail. It really was a once-in-a-lifetime moment that I'll always remember.
@@savromx4230 In fact Bottesini was the Paganini of Bass. If I had a 5 String Double Bass in Fifths Tuning (C, G, D, A, E) I could play Paganini's Violin Concertos arranged for 5Bass by Bottesini.
Wow, being able to listen to Paganini's Il Cannone is breathtaking!!! It really deserves its name! What an powerful instrument! ...not to mention Johanna Frankel's wonderful playing! Amazing!
Wow! Those high registers are fabulous! She is very talented and I'm sure has worked diligently for years to be this adept. Her fingers are fast! I am glad I found this video of her playing. Thank you all.
The bridge seen at 1:08 is a copy of Paganini's bridge (which has no heart-shaped hole in the centre, just under where the strings sit). 1:35, they seem to have changed it to a modern bridge. Paganini's bridge is known as a "transitional" bridge due to the time period. A company called Milo Stamm make perfectly cut copies of this bridge, along with other styles from different time periods. They use lasers for precise cuts! The Paganini bridge is slightly more powerful and has that punchy sound, yet due to the lack of heart-shaped hole it is less forgiving on the strings and many notes are prone to squeaking. A modern bridge allows the violin to vibrate a little bit longer.
The whole process of putting the strings was so nerve wrecking for me because of how old the instrument is. I completely understand the consent of it of it coming alive. It sounded so ordinary in the beginning then it "woke up" and it just changed. I don't know how to describe it.
She is a wonderful player and what she says is interesting and authoritative. As far as the video is concerned, I would have liked it to be a little longer so that I could have heard more of the playing without her talking over it. - I think we hear the violin 'on its own' for no more than about 40/50 seconds.
oh my god. looks like she is a maestro. she was played it without see it aka blind concept ( blind concept = playing by hearing and feeling, not by remembering and see the melody sheet ). if it is a car, she drive Ferrari.
Three questions: 1. What is the Brand [name] of 'your' strings which you were allowed to use-?, 2. Were you allowed to use your own bow-?, & 3. How long would you say does it take for the 'Canon' to ωarm up-?
They were Pirastro Obligato strings, high-quality modern strings, which have a modern multifilament fibre core inside a metal coat (I think tungsten/silver). Though gut strings, which Paganini would have used, were mentioned, these are not gut strings but ones which she is more used to, as she said.
The physics of Violin passivity between playings, ie the equivalent of ageing sand grains out of the light, by the Scintillation technique.., how long does it take to re-awaken the Timbre? One hour, in this excellent demonstration.. (Drawing a long bow..?)
Romeo Vashishth bec I thought it was his violin when I wrote the comment, so I thought it is nice that sometimes a violinist plays on it...but it was not his instrument......
Having heard examples of the 'big 3'(amati,strad,& Guarnneri) to me,the Guarnneri is superior in overall tone& sound. Beautiful sound/ beautiful, talented player. Te salute'!
They are - you can tell from the windings. She said she was used to these strings, so they would be more comfortable - and they are very good (modern mulitfilament fibre core wound in a metal coating).
1:50 I wish people could rent churches for an hour or so to be able to once play with that great resonance. Most hobby players just practice in more or less small rooms...
Paganini gave it to the city with agreement that it would never be sold or lent out to musicians. They play it once in a while because sitting too long is bad for it.
I think it’s a shame that it’s not played but put in a glass box. It’s a musical instrument not a painting. That like hiding the Mona Lisa behind a curtain
Such a shame and a bit distespectful to keep it locked up. Keep it locked up and itll be worth nothing eventually, nothing more than a ego ticket to brag about letting a masterpiece rot like that
what a stupid piece to showcase a violin! its meant to showcase the violinist..she should have chosen a piece that has a lot of legatos in all strings and a few double stops. u would not notice any difference tonal qualities if you play a super fast piece on a de gesu or a chinese factory violin.

The violin was not named "Il Cannone" for nothing.

That is Il Cannone Paganini's violin
Paganini was a composer and Violinist. He came up with techniques as the instrument improved.

Wonderful description of such an amazing instruments.
The sustain is amazing
1743....older than the USA
happens pretty often here in europe 😅
Holding up better than the US too tbh
Both incredibly loud and pretentious, the difference is the violin can end conflict, usa cant wait to start it
The caprice no.5 is not the original bowing

Probably the happiest day in that violin's life for a long time...
Wonderful.... Thank You
Wonderful demonstration.....the best I have heard to date, on this violin.....you made it bloom!

Great sound, great performance.
Instead of the caprice she could have played the Paganini Cantabile which would have showcased the tone and singing qualities of the violin
It’s so shocking how SoHyun has a 300 year old one. The sound is so much richer and more in depth.
Absolutely beautiful video. Thank You for posting

It’s a shame such a beautiful instrument gets played so infrequently, what a waste.
Yup! It's sound might even get fuller if it is used more frequently.
Wow! Love this violin. ❤ 🎻😊👍
That was awesome! You have a fantasic bow arm.
So excited to see her play tonight!

Bravo!!!
Brava ! Paganini a casa sua !
I'd be so nervous handling that violin. Amazing.
Honestly I would place soft pads on the floor with cotton all around to make sure the violin is safe in case it slips.

Oh, yeah. Our job is to inflate the price of the violin by showing "not musicians, but replayers" orgasming about that italian violin xD
