A Nicolo Gagliano was the first really good violin I ever had a try of. It actually did not seem particularly enthralling under the ear but to an audience in a small room or larger, it sounded stupendous - everything just focussed itself perfectly for the listener. There have been numerous violinists over the years who started out their professional solo career with a Gagliano and for whatever reason thought they needed to "graduate" to a Strad. Anne-Sophie Mutter apparently being one of them (allegedly getting the Strad partly due to the cajoling Karajan so the story goes). To me she never sounded any better with the Strad. And quite honestly there was absolutely no reason why she would have.
