03:47 Unfortunately for those of us trying to play this, there is another little 3 note run and a single note after what you have in the tabs. I had to slow it down to hear it. Great video though. I learned most of this song using your video.
What always makes me wonder about is how Jimmy Page was able to think of stuff like this! He was always experimenting and looking for new sounds, and that's what keeps music interesting. Led Zeppelin was always trying to sound different from other bands, and they did. Most bands had a common core base that they followed, but Led Zeppelin was always different, and that's why they became so successful.
0:47 I've convinced myself that on Physical Graffiti this break was done with a Leslie on a fast rate. If anyone knows better, please set me straight. Note that at this time, I don't thing it was a Uni-vibe.
It sure is a Leslie,! Page used those quite a bit, including the solo for Good Times. I don't hear any Uni-vibe in the Zep catalog, it was usually Phase 90 live or Eventide Instant Phaser in the studio.
Just a general note for bassists and guitarists learning this song that the opening-riff octaved G's are played as follows: On guitar: low-low-high-high-low-low-low-high on bass: low-low-high-high-low-high-high-high
I find this part surprisingly tricky to transcribe- working it out for a student on guitar & kept changing my mind. Is Page consistent on it or does he vary it? The tone & the doubling w/ bass makes it extra mushy to hear. Is the original double tracked?
My take: guitar: low-high-high-high-low-low-high-high bass: low(hold for two beats)-high-high-low-high-high-high IDK, I just hear the three high on the guitar the first round, and and bass holding the first note to make a boom to punctuate the riff. I guess it's all subjective.
Exactly why I came here, because the online guitar tab site shows the pattern of 335 33355 | 335 33355 | F7, F#7 :| Slowing down the actual song, it does sound similar to this. Yeah, Page was that good to where it seldom gets interpreted exactly as the record. No wonder it's difficult to pin down if the bass riff is slightly different. Phenomenal riff and song.
There's two guitarists that I've studied who really play outside the box. Page and Steve Howe. Page is not just a power chord / riff guy, he composes a song. Howe is similar in that he doesn't just use chords, but often he'll use chord structure to build melodies. It's the oddest thing I've seen. Very difficult to play, but very rewarding when you master it.
Cudos to you for doing this the way we need it!! Close up, slowed down and no talking! Someone finally got it right. I mean I appreciate anyone who takes the time to do video... but we don't need all of the explanation about what finger on want string at which fret. We can see what you showing us. That's all we need. Thank you soooooo much!! Subscribed!!!
Page's jazz chord middle 8 is one of the most surprising middle 8s of all time. it is so good, and then he resolves out of it with some bluesy riffing then back to the B-flat. This tune is so damm funky. led zep were eseentially more or a Funk than a blues orientated band.
I'd love to hear some more Zep stuff with either the Catalinbread RAH, the Retro Channel Fuzz, or maybe the three-knob MJM Britbender, I reckon they get closer to Page's tone, but I'd like to hear more from them to know for sure.
Looking forward to tomorrows Wampler Velvet fuzz Strat demo which will bring the total to 4 demos in 7 days ;) Brian Wampler must give one hell of a ....oh nevermind.
Actually, I have this fuzz, and when stacked with a Barber LTD and the Velvet's Tight switch on, it nails the tone.. I use my vibrato as a Leslie sim on the break.. To be honest tho I haven't really been happy with this particular Fuzz, it's much too dark..
Ken Scott yeah, that surfy bridge has a wild Leslie vibrato.. we need a stab at the lead dub too. one of the reasons they never really played this 1 live, too many tricks w/ poly-tracks.
Great job, and the fuzz is cool, but you forgot the phase shifter. Why does youtube think that 'shifter' is a typo? Why does youtube think that 'youtube' is a typo?? '
I rewatched all 3 demos and they never mentioned it was an exclusive but that would make sense. Apparently the internet didn't like my joke anyway :( Keep up the good work!
If you rolled some of the treble off, you'd have gotten closer to replicating Page's tone on the Wanton Song....He was obviously playing thru a very loud amp, which I realize you couldn't do for this video. I'd have swapped that fuzz box for a Chorus pedal for that middle-eight part, too.
Yes, but have you any tips on the main octave riff. It always sounds way dirty/sloppy with my picking. I have no problems with the Immigrant Song for instance. Whats the pattern? Down/up, down/up?
Its kinda weird how anyone can take tabs and play them right but getting it just right down to the feel and sound of a riff can be a lot looser or different.
Pretty close. But the recording is a lot less mid-rangey and more high range focused. But Andy's playing is extremely good, and the lesson is. So who cares?
Plant and Page play this on Jools Holland and it looks like Page switches from his Marshalls to the Vox for the lead solo, then back to the Marshalls at the end. This version is higher tempo than LZ, but Page plays it incredibly.
Good question, that's backwards guitar! Live, he would just play the chord and switch from both pickup (used in the chorus) back to the bridge pickup for the main riff. Check out some Page/Plant versions. Andy
this is a classic track on the album but live it was something else. Hearing Page play this live made it one of my favorite zep tracks. He did some crazy shit bending the notes together in the solo that was unlike any sound Ive heard a guitar make before or since. The shame is I've not found a live recording of page playing it that really captures how great it is, only a couple of bootleg page sound checks that come close.
The climbing riff on the bridge always made my hair stand. I love Jimmy Page. He doesn't think like other guitarists
Sure man! Such a refined climbing riff!
My God, Pagey is definitly the master riff along with Iommi.
It’s the drumming behind those riffs that make them special
Jimmy Page=Master riffs
Tony Iommi
Nah
-Jimmy Page=Master riffs / old Rock
-Tony Iommi=Master riffs / old Metal

Are you sure ?
Sounds for me guitar & bass play the same : low-low-high-high-low-low-high-high.

what a perfect demo, thank you, right to the point, you play amazing!
I love this song. And I'm even happier I have bought the Velvet Fuzz few days ago, I can't wait for it !

I was lucky enough to see both Page & Howe.....saw Yes 3 times & Led Zep once in 77....great musicians

Andy, you play wonderfully!
Very good lesson. Easy to follow so it only took me a few minutes to learn. Many thanks
Nice cover of one of my Zeppelin favorites.
Love it. One of my favorite songs from a very underrated Zeppelin album.
Under rated? Are you kidding?
Wouldn’t say underrated album, but song is quite overlooked
Nearly 9 years later and I find this instructional. Great tone and playing! Gonna learn this sick song.
Thanks! Hope it helps.
Great riff and great lesson! The best part of this song is the solo, which Jimmy played through a Leslie speaker cabinet.
I really like your teaching technique. Definite subscriber now ! First the song, then the song in sections SLOW ! Nice job.
I appreciate it Jay, this is an archive of older demos. Don't forget to check out Reverb and AndyDemos channels for newer videos. Thanks!
Andy
Thank for teaching me that song !I got thru it fast cause of your education and I thank you for that !

That was so good.
Pagey...just stupid creative and badass.
I love this guitar
Thank you for this!!
Aaaaannnnd that was pretty much awesome.
Tight but loose/nice breakdown/Velvet Fuzz comes pretty close to nailing Jimmy's Tone/THX
I'd love to hear some more Zep stuff with either the Catalinbread RAH, the Retro Channel Fuzz, or maybe the three-knob MJM Britbender, I reckon they get closer to Page's tone, but I'd like to hear more from them to know for sure.

excelent !!!
One of those rare moments I've seen you play with a pick.
Yes, but have you any tips on the main octave riff. It always sounds way dirty/sloppy with my picking. I have no problems with the Immigrant Song for instance. Whats the pattern? Down/up, down/up?
Cool!
Jimmy Page is a genius
Muito bom!
Muy bueno loco
it's essentially the 'cannon' progression. Now, castles made of sand on the other hand...
He should do a lesson for EXP.
Do Jimmy Page Flashing Lights song.
Thanks Andy
2018
Thosee chords!!!!!
Yo, try doing the volume swell like I do it... Cut the volume knob, play the chord, slowly turn up the knob. Gotta be quick tho.
Its kinda weird how anyone can take tabs and play them right but getting it just right down to the feel and sound of a riff can be a lot looser or different.
Cool

how about the lead?

What color is this guitar??
Tobacco Burst.
Hight skill))
I had to slow down your slow version to play it ! LOL
What about those swells
Good question, that's backwards guitar! Live, he would just play the chord and switch from both pickup (used in the chorus) back to the bridge pickup for the main riff. Check out some Page/Plant versions.

The first chord is an Fm9
Are you sure it isn't 2 low G, ONE octave G, THREE low G, two octave G?
It's 2 low G's
and 2 octave G's.

No two zep songs sounded alike.
Andy please "Little Wing" Guitar Lesson...!!
