  • This is the true story about Huey, the baby raven I helped get back into the wild. This short (40 minutes) is a "movie" that was made between 2005 and 2009 as a Christmas present to my then nieces and nephews ages 7 to 11. Others wanted it so we made it available on VOD and DVD and it did well. Since it was never about money I now release it to the RUclips audience even though I'm well aware most movies, even shorts are too long for the normal You Tube audience. Also. being an old style movie, where conflict is written into the story and somebody has to be the bad guy, the crow is made out to be the villain, even though in real life, I know the crow is not a villain.
So, I hope you enjoy this simple yet fun story about real life dealings with our amazing wildlife found in our own backyards, and how God personally answered some of my questions and made me see some things both about me and this world that are truly miraculous. I apologize the original is before HD! Kids will be watching this so "stupid and foul" comments will be removed...

Yes, Eric, before I met these birds I too felt anxious and weighed down. Since, I've been given the greatest gift I believe an adult can be given, and that is the heart of a child. Every time I get with theses birds, even the wild ones, I'm filled with awe, and wonder, and yes, peace. Aw peace, in this day and age there is no substitute for peace... Thanks for writing, your comment assures me I made the right decision to release this! Thank you!

I too have been blessed with the friendship of our resident wild crow couple in our garden. They are very loving, loyal and protective of each other. The male crow lost his flight feathers and the female crow brought food and water up to him for months until he grew back his feathers and could fly again.

I have a crow call and I'll sometime copy a crow, repeating them exactly, while I'm fishing. If they caw three times I'll do it back, etc.
Once a crow came over and led me in a count from one to eight and back down again. I thought OMG, it showing me that it can count! Then it tilted it's head and flew away. Soon I realized it was testing ME to see if I could count.

Dad named the raven Madam. My dad passed away and later my mom moved about 20 miles away. Shortly after the move she noticed some ravens near her house. When she looked closely she noticed Madam’s white feathers. They actually followed her to her new place! Watching your videos gave me a lot of insight into ravens! Thank YOU ! When I was a kid on a farm my brother and I found a very young down covered Great Horned Owl that had fallen out of the nest, you guessed it we had named him Hooey and for the next 3 years Hooey which was actually a female and very large as the females are was the roaming pet of the barn yard that was ALWAYS hungry, then one day she figured out how to get her own food like going to a city drive thru fast food restaurant , flying Into one big door of the hay barn and out the other with a mouse snack she would eat on the side of the cattle water trough. She too took great delight being close except big owls have big sharp talons they hold onto your shoulder arm with or she loved if your leg was propped she went for the leg every time she would greet you every time you walked out side then fly around proving just how superior owls were compared to humans, she loved to hear you talk to her and she would bring you a present out of the barn and did not understand why you didn't eat it and instead refused to eat it if you offered it back to her, crazy but just so interesting was the time Madam Hooey shared her time with us. the I guess she matured and would see her but not like before she started raising her own little owls in Our Barn which of course was really HER Barn she just let us hang out around it.

Corvids have an amazing vocabulary. What does that say about their intelligence ... about their ability to communicate with humans? I've noticed that crows tend to flock in odd numbers and that they rule they sky wherever they fly. Everybody gets quiet and hides when a red-tailed hawk sails over, except for magpies, who will singly harass a hawk untill it leaves the area. But whenever crows fly over, the sky is empty and only the crows are to be heard. Nobody, but nobody messes with the crows! I'm convinced that they have only one wing in the blue sky we see ... the other is in a different world altogether. They can only be sacred, like messengers from the other side.

That was beautiful. It is God's confirmation to me that He speaks to us through His creation, especially His special gifts to us, His precious animals. When my daughter was living in London, we went to Stonehenge, and there was a crow there, that stayed on the same standing stone around the perimiter, the entire time we were there. So as we were leaving, I stopped and talked to him for a while. He looked directly at my eyes and very obviously was listening to me, trying to understand what I was saying. He never showed any fear, just watched me, turning his head from side to side, never taking his eyes off of me. He knew I wasn't a threat. When I was living with my other daughter , her landlord had horses, and they were the same. They would come over to me, and actually rubbed their heads on my shoulder, because they knew I wasn't a threat, even though I'd never had any experience with horses, and that I loved them. I know that animals, including our own pets, will be, and already are in heaven, waiting for us, having the time of their lives till we get there. They have perfectly innocent souls, as they're incapable of sin. I can't wait to see all my pets again, and run with the horses, and talk to all the animals, because they won't have to fear man, anymore.

From what I’ve watch not only on here but several other videos you can buy their favor buy feeding them. But remember what you have learned here. They are not tame even when they like you. On a video on RUclips they have a young girl that feeds them and they have brought her at least 100 “gifts” and continue to. A ravens memory is long on how you treat them and they are able to share this with their family of Ravens. I too would love a relationship with one or more. But I see the responsibility of it as well. I hope you as well as many more get to at least get a time of interaction. 😁💖

Hey Raven Diaries, I've been following your channel for awhile now. I absolutely loved this video, your relationship with ravens is beautiful and it brought a tear to my eye. I also have a relationship with birds although it isn't as personal and intimate as you and your ravens, I'd say that I have a pretty good relationship with birds. For the last couple of years I've been feeding the California Scrub Jays unsalted peanuts still in the shell and they love them, every other day I'll throw a handful of peanuts on the oning above the back door to our backyard and they'll swoop down one by one collecting their peanuts, we grew accustomed hearing their little claws landing on the oning. Haha... Everytime their supply is low a scrub Jay will hold a peanut in their mouth to show us that want more peanuts (isn't that something? The scrub Jays can communicate to is through objects). We've been giving peanuts to the Jays since December of 2013. Other birds I feed just recently are hummingbirds, a friend from work gave me a small feeder and at the beginning there was one hummingbird (an Allen's) that'll come around, then we had 2 of them, then 3, just recently I bought 2 big feeders at Walmart and we have at least 7 hummies, mostly Allen's and a few Anna's. These birds are very special to me.

Awe so sweet. I actually think crows are very smart. I had never been around them until I moved into this house in the city. Right after moving in I saw a crow in the back yard up in a tree and looked up talking to him, figuring he didnt even know I was talking to him. Then one day when I came home a tree outside one of my widows was covered with a flock of crows that were all in sync facing in the direction of the window. As if they were pointing to it like a bird dog. It was the oddest, cutest thing. I felt maybe I should make sure that window was secured. It had some problems so I didnt do a good job. I wish I had called a professional because a week or so later the window was broken into and someone robbed me. Some time later a person I suspected might have been involved came by to do work on my car and when the birds saw him they had a fit, they were screaming and swooping down trying to attack him the whole time he was there trying to work on the car. And I felt like they were angrily trying to scold me for having him there as well. That just felt like a miracle from God they were actually so caring and aware of things like that.

@theravendiaries A totally touching and heartfelt film. Well done. I'm in a small relationship with a young Crow here in Upstate SC. I had much the same feeling of "bugger off Crow, my local Hawks don't like you" when I came out back one day and she was on my feeders. I grabbed a dog's squeeky maker and squeeked it at her. She dropped her head and shoulders but didn't move. I heard somewhere "I'm just hungry, can I have some food" but I ignored it. I moved closer and squeeked again. Then, louder this time, the question was repeated. I understood right then. I put the offending noise maker away and grabbed some fresh feed. She's been back every day since then and has even taken food from my hand. God's Grace has brought me a friend in this time of shelter in place, during an unusual time in my life that I'm totally alone and needed it the most. #peaceandlove

This is fabulous and tells us all birds are wonderful .👍👍 Crows are very quiet when you see them .No crow is vile ..They saved my life with their quiet nature and endless games as they soared , twirled and dived over the TV station across from my flat .I was in bed with a fractured spine / alone and in massive pain .Tp focus on them had me trying to take images ( crazy ones as I couldn't stand or sit ..the idea was to try and draw them ) Sun glinting on my lens was seen and they came to see me .Each day they would call and look as if to say ."still there, hows things ? " Once able to get out and with difficulty who should fly to meet me ( the only noise was the beating of their wings ) Our friendship has grown .and will always be special
You see you cared for a raven .I was saved by the cows here...All are Corvids and all very special .In Berlin we have Corvus cornix and yet every now and then their cousins visit .Like out of towners .Ravens , Rook , Corvus corone . They meet on Theodor Heuss Platz and it is a lovely sight ..All birds are wonderful .Once in a while something happens and a particular species means something very special to us .A world minus birds would be awful .One where humans shoot birds tragic ..and God must be mighty sorry so much happens ..---Thou shall not kill :)

Hello Helen, thank you for the story, and understand, this was a "movie' made for kids and every story has to have a "bad" guy. The crow was the villain in the story. I did it that way because many people are not fond of crows for numerous perceived reasons like nest robbing, killing each other, and because in larger groups they can be quite noisy, especially at first light when many would rather be sleeping.
Also much of the story evolved around the fact that the crow was a wounded wild adult, the raven was a baby and had no fear of humans. A wounded adult raven would be just as mistrusting as the crow was.
But, understand in real life I love crows as much as ravens, but because of the gang personality they have in my area they are much more difficult to get to know individually.
I've never shot or killed one and I have no reason to do so in the future. : )

Thank you for the video. We were also blessed with a Raven, an unforgetable experience. He showed up one day last summer...I'd find him in the feed shed where he'd spent the night all snuggled in the hay. For Three months this young Raven came & went. He'd sneek into the chicken coop when the hens were out and steal the eggs. Later, I'd find the empty eggs in the feed shed where he enjoyed his snack. Now and then he'd dissapear, we assumed back to his family that hatched near by, being part of four siblings. A smart and funny bird, hopping behind me with short flights along the way to the house. One day he came out of the chicken coop with an egg... I laughed and said "where are you going with that?" with potential bone crushing strength, his gentle grip was delicate, he softly placed the egg on the ground and hopped away with a flight back up on the fence. They are indeed a smart and majestic creation - I'm thankful daily for the simple yet deep joys we get to experience and acknoledge when they become a part of our journey. I sense God sends them our way in the right moments & seasons.... angels of comfort sent from above (Yaweh).

Aren't those the greatest gifts: love and friendship. I was never much of a cat lover, because I thought they were selfish like you say crows are. One day I met Simba, a tiny black cat that behaves pretty much like Huey did in his infancy. Simba is literaly everybody's friend; incapable of fear or hatred. She has an owner, or rather a provider, and he says he couldn't keep her indoors if he tried. Simba plays with dogs and with children alike (the dogs actually adore her) in the neighbourhood and she walks after you, if you say hi to her. Quite often she follows me home and pays me a visit. And when I talk to her, her head slants just like Huey's one does or the way a dog can do. At a certain point, when I was petting her and talking to her she gently put her little paw at my lips as if to hush me, And with her sandpaper tongue she started licking my entire face, making that 'purring' sound all the way and nudging her head against mine. If that isn't affection I don't know what is. As always, when she pays me a visit, at five 'o clock in the afternoon she meows at the door, signaling she has to go again. Off to another friend or her providing friend. This all happened when I was pretty down because my wife had left me. To me a clear sign God has His ways to let you know there are guardian angels out there, albeit not all of them have feathers and a white corona over their heads. It also convinced me, that one day we all will be judged by the kindness of our hearts and the way we treat who or what He created out of love.
As for crows: a friend of mine had a tame one. He fell out of his nest and my friend nurtured him. He was called Garritt. And if you didn't know any better, Garritt behaved just lik Huey does, although a bit more cheaky and loud. In short, judge not an entire species; each has its own set of special characters of which some kind and some selfish or hatefull. One might say they are just like humans in that respect ;)

Great stories and great advice, thank you for sharing! I keep telling people both ravens and crows raised in a human/animal environment are going to be pretty much the same in both intelligence and affection (with perhaps the crow being a little more vocal) but that it's the environment (especially in my area) where they differ so because of the way the 2 species live; a married couple that homesteads a farm and lives their lives on it together till death do us part ( the ravens) as opposed to the more gang banger life of my American Crows.
