I'm so glad you filmed the Merritt Parkway. It's by far my favorite ride in Southern New England. Other road video makers shy away from old tree-lined roads with older overpasses, I'm glad you took the dive.

I remember when my father drove me up this route in 1941, and some scenes remain. Too bad it began to rain or you could have brought us all the the way to New Haven or further. It is indeed a lovely drive, thank you for sharing! Memory Highway!

We took this from NJ to Boston and it has been one of the most scenic roads I have driven through. Wanna drive through again.

I drove through this parkway on my way back home to Virginia from Massachusetts. I never knew there was such a beautiful road in the northeast US. I wanted to make a U-turn and drive it again. Everyone was up to speed (about 75 - 80 mph) and the turns were so smooth while also being exciting. 10/10 would drive again.

Old comment but I just drove this for the first time the other day coming back from Brooklyn to Massachusetts. A very nice break from the monotonous highways.

It looks like it hasn't changed much since my family drove through here from Meriden CT to NYC in 1972, during a five-week cross-Canada and US trip (starting and ending in Kamloops, British Columbia). This was definitely one of the many highlights of the trip.

Very scenic parkway! I would definitely take this over I-95, the no commercial traffic is a big bonus. Plus, driving through all those trees seems like a rush!

In Connecticut, they use Sodium Vapor lamp with double door version of the street light fixtures, such as the large Hubbell brand, General Electric, Model M-400A, either Westinghouse or Crouse-Hinds, and McGraw-Edison brand, again with double door versions. I have traveled through Connecticut either I-95 or Merritt Parkway about 20 years ago as I was going to Newport Rhode Island for two weeks for my vacation. About 6 years ago they now installed LED street lights along these stretch on these highway across Connecticut.

Awesome route you chose! I wish I took this route into New York a couple years ago. This parkway is what all parkways should be like unlike the “parkways” here in southeast Michigan!

    • @drtee51
      @drtee51 6 лет назад +2

Yeah, "parkway" can be defined a lot of different ways, can't it? In NY, NJ, and CT it usually means a landscaped freeway that doesn't allow commercial vehicles. This isn't like the Hines Parkway in Michigan, which is 2 lanes and has signals, but does have a lot of recreational stops alongside it. And in Kentucky, "parkway" is just a synonym for "freeway with a name."

    • @tomgeraci9886

@@drtee51 and in Boston, it usually means a scenic major arterial road (usually not limited access, but cars drive like 45 mph on em)

I grew up in NYC but when I was 16 Dad retired and we left that shithole and moved to beautiful Fairfield County for 2 years in the late 1960s/ early 70s. My teenage fantasy once I graduated high school would be to ride a Triumph 650
Bonneville (?) eastbound on the Merritt with it's sweeping curves, rises and falls and lush foliage on the sides and its median. The perfect song, "Up Around the Bend" by Creedence would be playing. Such nice years.

As of today, Massachusetts have their exit numbers changed to a mileage based system on all Interstate, US, and state highways and it is 100% completed. Besides Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, New York and even Vermont will have their exit numbers change from sequential (consecutive) order to a mileage based system. Only two states, Delaware, and New Hampshire will have to keep their exit numbers in sequential (consecutive) order. How 😢.

  • @EpicThe112

This road does have a highway number CT-15 to which you can Bypass I-95 from Exit 38 to NY Border Greenwich Connecticut Port Chester New York. In the summer time CT-15 Meridien to New York state line gets U-Haul truck as common sight.

The Merritt is notorious for crippling traffic. You drove this at a good/lucky time. Never take it during week-day rush hour.

Another distinguishing feature is the typeface used for the texts on the highway signs - it's neither FHWA Series Highway Gothic nor is it Clearview.

  • @davidtosh7200

In Connecticut, they should change its exit numbers to a mileage based markers in the near future on Merritt Parkway in Connecticut, like they did on I-395 in eastern Connecticut, and it makes more sense.
