- McLaren Racing And Google have unveiled a special Livery For British Grand Prix, based on previous McLaren liveries, we look into the process of how the original silver chrome livery was painted and why it's switched to vinyl!

Lando is right. This needs to be "the" livery. This is actually quite cool and of course it works with the marketing being "Google Chrome." Love to see the behind the scenes and learn more about how teams do the things they do. Great stuff!

The paint would be much deeper and shiny, but it's gonna look great on track from camera shots. Good vid!
In person it does look as shiny as their other cards on display at the MTC!
I don't mind the chrome orange combo, I just wish they cover all or most of the carbon fiber part with chrome paint.
Yeah but weight *is* a factor and so is the agreements among the sponsors. I’m sure they wanna be seen easily like white on black instead of “I Spy” on shiny silver metallic bodywork.
That’s why the Mclaren doesn’t have the kindles for this race. Saves a few grams i suppose.
I’m not an aerodynamicist but I agree, I think some more chrome in certain spots would’ve been nice but only if it’ll help with performance. Otherwise keep it limited and let Lando be chromed out on his helmet so he’ll be happy 😂

I saw she was the marketing director and was expecting a pr script of how great it is working with google but she gave an amazingly concise yet detailed explanation of all the logistics that go into a livery. Top notch!
The dark Grey and red livery of the MP4/30 (2015 Spanish Grand Prix) is to me, one of the best the team ever had, I hope to see it again one day.

mclaren used to have the most beautiful chrome livery ever, it looks classy and fluid, like quick silver, should have keep it and make it their signature like red with ferrari

@@tommygately8461 Well, for many people, growing up, the silver and red McLaren is the one that they saw awesome moments of McLaren history. Hakkinen, Hamilton, Coulthard. Just like some people grew up seeing the white and red of Senna. If you're going to do a homage about past achievements, you have to go all the way. Sure, I don't expect them to sign a one-off deal with Vodafone or West to add the red, but come on, one single race with some shade of red instead of papaya won't destroy their brand.
I don't hate the orange/papaya, but I hate the look of this car, for me it's an ugly mix of carbon/black, orange and chrome. They should have done the entire car in chrome, and then maybe the pinstripes in orange instead of vodaphone red similar to the 2007 design

I wish there was more chrome. All the exposed carbon fibre being chrome would have made this great, unfortunately this attempt is just okay.

I believe Red Bull (Mercedes might use it as well) are the only team on grid that still use paint. Adrian Newey insists that although vinyl is lighter, paint still has an aerodynamic advantage which more than makes up for the weight.
Williams also, therefore last year they had so much black carbon because they stripped the paint.
It actually looks really good in this video and an improvement to the original livery! Can't wait to see it on track!

The chrome paint looked good. Chrome-colored vinyl can be applied quickly and easily but it doesn't look good.

0:32 That's how you should be making a special livery, and argubaly the best special livery in recent years. Too bad the FIA are idiots to make the new cars heavier so the teams have to resort to strip paint to keep it as light as possible

The Chrome should stay. However, to really make it beautiful, it needed way less papaya and a gradient between the Chrome and the black, like the old McLarens.
3:20 actually they could do it with a paint scheme. Seems like people don’t realize Ron Dennis had the painters repaint the cars after every weekend back in the 80s and 90s. So yes, it is possible.

For me it's the google colours. I think they clash too harshly against the chrome and ruins the contrasting patches of silver-orange.

They should keep it for the rest of the season I don' t like sky blue. 2021 car looked good with the darker blue on the airbox and sidepods. This blue with the black makes it too busy for me.

Having been an automotive painter for a few years, it amazes me that they paint all their parts the traditional way. The amount of microns is a lot higher than by automated paint machines. And since it's all about weigh, filler, primer, paint and clear coat, that's a lot of weight, even considering very experienced painters. I'm shocked.
They just explained that they no longer use paint. It's all vinyl now

No, they havent. They were the silver arrows back then and they should be today. 2 Stripes of chrome doesnt make up the livery and the Vodafone in COMBINATION is what made the livery so awesome. This ist just a try to produce a hype around a livery that fans loved with a big letdown... At least they could make everything chrome instead of sticking to some ugly black parts...
This is such a let down after the hype... It isn't even close to the old livery. It looks more like the old force india livery. We need more chrome!
