Remember Me - A Civil War Short Film

- After nearly 3 years of work, our short film, "Remember Me," is finally complete!
"Remember Me" tracks the experiences of a single Union soldier from Berdan's elite group of sharpshooters. Although the film is set during one of the Civil War's iconic battles, the film takes a look at the much more isolated and personal battles our main character struggles with. It takes more than nerve and grit to survive the day...

Congratulations Cole!!! I enjoy it very much. Great work. You guys made it like a pro.
@@ernststukahess Thanks Hess! :D That's awesome to hear!
Thanks for the compliment Hess! We'll keep working and learning, and hopefully our future films will continue to improve.
To the soldier who faught to the last. To the soldier everyone thought was past. The last round fired. The last stands taken.
The blood spilled for freedom ring not just in history.
But what they did echos throughout eternity.
HAIL THE VICTORIOUS DEAD!!!!
Great job! Chase Elliot playing the union soldier! No serious. Loved!
Yes, we had to get him between races, haha. 😉 Seriously, glad you enjoyed the film! 😊
Thanks for the support, Joseph!
Wonderful and touching story, a budding career in the making! I do believe Matt Damon and Ben Affleck got their start that way. Well done to all.
Thanks Gordon! :D I didn't know that's how they got their start; that's really neat! :)
Just seen this. Deserves more recognition.
Thanks, ArcticWolf! We’re glad you enjoyed it! 😃
Thanks!
No problem. You all do great respect to the era!
Well done...very well done. Keep at it. There is definitely something happening here. Hope to see more shorties ...then.
Thanks for the compliment, William! And yes, we are planning to make more shorts...they just take time (since they are a hobby).
Excellent job! I am a Civil War reenactor myself of 30+ years and your attention to detail was amazing. And the story is something that did happen during that war more often then not.
Thank you, Doug! We’re happy the attention to detail shined through. 😊 Glad to hear you enjoyed the film!
Great casting :) Wyatt and Cole looked like they were from the parts of the country they represented. Loved the musical scores, too. Extremely well done!
Thanks Michael! That’s great to hear - we worked hard on that! Our own JG1_Ewald actually helped advise us on the costumes and props! :)
Thanks Michael! As long time residents of South Dakota, we were a little worried that our cast wouldn’t fit the story, so we’re quite happy to hear that you found them believable.
Wow! Impressive work, right through the credits. Glory to God!!!
Glory to God, indeed! We're so glad you enjoyed this film! :D
Thanks for the compliment!
Hey everyone, glad to see you here! Cole and I will be online today to answer any questions you might have about the film.
I loved it; great work Team Austin! The location/setting, the use of the diary to tell the story, the focused characters, and the atmospheric music all made for a compelling, very personal, vignette of one of the tens of thousands of similar happenings throughout the course of the Civil War.
We're so glad you enjoyed it! The Civil War - just like every major event - was made up of thousands of individual lives, each dealing with their own beliefs and choices. In the end, conflict seems to unearth the truth in every heart. And we felt it was worth trying to portray in film, as best we could.
Thanks for letting us know what you thought!
All I can say is, wow. A lot of folks will fail to grasp the simple message in this excellent work, but it is very clear to me. I have been fortunate enough to have, thanks to my late parents, been exposed to history throughout my life. I've stood in many historical locations, on many battlefields, and had the opportunity to (in many ways) relive the history of our great nation. Through all the glory and the misery, this film demonstrates the greatest power of all... love and a common respect and compassion which transcends all politics and all conflicts. At least it should. You guys did a great job, I hope to see more from you. If future endeavours are as well done as this, it will be a genuine gift to everyone who follows your work.
Aw, thanks! We'll try to keep up the good work!
A Masterpiece short story great and with good heart ❤️ .😊
@@Lawrence-ho9eq thank you! 😊

TWO THUMBS UP !
What an amazing short film story with true meaning and a message. Wonderful tribute to those whom will probably remain unknown for all time.
You and your kin did a great job brother. Looking forward to your next project.

Thanks Maxe! We're glad the film touched you! It's only right to give tribute to the countless unknown heroes who quietly did the right thing - even in times as horrific as the Civil War.
Great job, Cole! Holds the attention well, nice pace, good image and sound quality, good acting, believable.
Thanks Luis! We're consistently working to improve on each of these things with every short film we make, so it's encouraging to hear that they resonated well with you in this effort! :D
Thanks for the review mate! Glad you liked it!
A beautifully done short film that shows the Humanity that can exist even in the most horrific conflicts. I have contacted the director of the Abbeville Institute, a southern historical site, which I read regularly, to consider announcing to the membership the release of this wonderfully done independent film.
Wow, thanks so much Steve! We would love to have the Abbeville Institute have a look at it! So glad you enjoyed it! :D
That sounds wonderful, to be honest! Thanks for your review and for your time.
For they who gave there lives so we may be free. Let it be our sworn duty as human beings that we not let any memory of them that is left be forgotten
Hear hear!
And the fact that it was an enemy soldier made me think....
I'm glad you liked it!
Although matters of right and wrong ARE incredibly important and worth fighting for, there has never been a battle fought where one side was completely justified. That was important to recognize, so we made the better man the Confederate (traditionally typecast as the wrong). Our story was loosely based on the parable of the "Good Samaritan", so it felt like the right way to illustrate the message.
Epic man! I almost cried!
Very clean and well produced vignette with acts of war and moments of empathy that cast doubt upon the sense of it all....very moving indeed
Thanks for letting us know! I’m glad you liked it!
Great job, Cole and crew. Very impressive what you managed to convey in just 12 minutes. Kudos to the soundtrack as well. Perfect.
Thanks for the support Peter! The soundtrack was actually quite a mess at one point: our composer got involved in an accident soon after composing the fantastic title song, and wasn't able to continue. We were actually able to use royalty free music for most of the rest of the film, and I composed the hill-climbing portion of the score myself. All in all, we are quite pleased with what we got!
Thanks Peter! We're so glad you enjoyed it! The soundtrack took a lot of work for us to compile, edit, and/or hire out. It's really good to hear that all the effort was worth it! :)
@@RookieAce Yeah, I was shocked at how much was fit into this short film!
love the drama the story gives
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Thanks Julie! :D
War veterans would have a better understanding and appreciation of this movie. They know what really happens on the battlefield.
Doing research for this film was fascinating. I was unaware of the stories of sharpshooters during the Civil War. A sharpshooter wasn’t just a “good shot.” There was an elite group of soldiers called the Berdan Sharpshooters!
It was a really interesting perspective to explore.
Very moving 😢
Thanks!
Thanks for the comment! We're glad it moved you!
Great film! Skillful use of the forest elements created some interesting compositions. And the editing of the faster-paced areas was smooth, convincing, and professional. Good work all around!
I'm so glad you liked the editing! We were in post production for quite a long time, and I sometimes worried that we'd missed the mark on some of our sequences. It's fantastic to hear that you liked it!
Thanks Will! The forest made for some interesting shooting locations indeed! We're glad the hard work Shaw put into the editing paid off! :)
Great film, found this link on C&C Sutlery
Thanks, Rango! We’re glad you enjoyed it! 😃
My favorite part is when Earl (Cole) is sliding down the hill. My big part of the movie was pulling him down the hill just off camera. I tried to get an onscreen part, but this is the closest I got.
Haha! Yeah...we ripped a few of the buttons off my trousers doing that lol! I think you've got a talent for stunts...next film maybe we'll get you on screen as a stunt double! ;) :D Seriously though, thank-you for all your help during the filming. We couldn't have done it without you! :D
Very moving film, love the sharpshooters but, it caused the viewer to reflect on the fact of the destruction of war and the fact that Good shines through our actions... hope this can be used for teaching the Civil War in school... perhaps catholic or faith based schools or perhaps charter or public
War is such a complicated subject - especially when considering morally compromising situations.
But one truly good thing can come from the evils of war. It tends to wake people up, making them consider more than they would during peace and plenty.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the film, and thanks for letting us know!
wow! powerful.
remember me
as i lay me down with a will.
in this place of tranquil peace.
amidst the tumult of mortal war.
remember me
to thee and thine.
as slip my grasp upon this mortal coil.
does part me from kin and kind.
remember me
in flesh of mind and heart.
as lifeblood ebb my soul.
from tableau of tide and time.
remember me.

That is an amazing poem! Who wrote it, may I ask?
@@shawaustin2938 thanks. i did. the short film inspired me.
That is absolutely fantastic! I just assumed it was a famous poem, due to its structure and language. I didn't know you wrote it yourself! In that case, thanks for taking the time to write it!
@@shawaustin2938 thanks for the inspiration.
Probably most of those fellows just wanted to go home and be back with their families and wives. I would bet their families such as wives, children, or parents were the last things they thought of before they died.
I read about your film in the Practical Homeschooling magazine that I got at the library so naturally I had to find your video on RUclips and watch it. I have young kids who I homeschooled through the pandemic. You guys did an amazing job. Love the acting, the music, and the message especially. Great job you guys. 👏🙂
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for the kind words, Shaleice! They mean a lot to us. 😊
Found this video on the "photos and testimony" part of the C&C Sutlery website, and I am damn glad I did!
Hey, we're glad you found our video too! So glad you liked it! :D
Great job guys! I have a deep interest in the Berdan Sharpshooters and have read many books on the subject. This was very well done and I look forward to more in the future. Thanks for sharing your talent, hard work and creative vision!
Thanks so much Scott! As we studied and researched for this film, I found that I fell in love with the Berdan sharpshooters myself! :D We're thrilled you enjoyed our film! :)
Just read your article in a magazine & watched your short film. Great work! Very impressive. Excited to see where you will go with your movie making in the future.
Thanks for the support Andrew! We will certainly continue to do our best!
Thank you, Andrew! 😊 We already are working on our next project in our spare time.
Stumbled upon this video & decided to check it out. Before I knew it I was more than half way through it & drawn to the story. I love it when films do this, you just get lost in that world. I must say, really great job on this project. Great location, great acting, and powerful story. Hope it receives the recognition it deserves. Kudos.
Thanks so much for letting us know you enjoyed it!
Recognition can be overrated, but it is nice to know that the story holds some meaning to other people besides ourselves. I'm glad you liked it!
Thank you so much Javi Mar! That’s exactly what we hoped to do with our film. We’re thrilled it meant that much to you. 😃
Best short film about war I've seen in a while mates keep up the good work and can't wait for the new projects you guys make :)
Thanks so much for the support, Codcas! We do have another film on the table (we've been working on the script for a few years). Hopefully, you'll get to hear about it soon ;)
Great film! The flashbacks added a good depth to the story.
Thanks CircusFlea! Since we had a limited cast and wanted to keep the film short but full, the flashbacks seemed like a good way to help us understand the main character a bit more. :)
The flashbacks were added as a tool to give the audience brief glimpses into the character's past, which - depending on how he remembered it - gives lots of clues as to how he thinks and what he's feeling.
Turned out incredible! Love how realistic and historically accurate this is!
Thanks Riley! :D We worked hard to be as historically-accurate as we could given our budget and limited cast. We're thrilled you enjoyed it!
We actually made sure the script was feasible by choosing a specific unit and date for our main character's story. You can actually see his regiment, company, and line number stitched onto his canteen cover!
"Remember me. Remember what I was born for. What I lived for. What I believed in. What I died for. Remember the laughter. The pain. The tears. The homesickness. Remember the fear and the agony and the desperation. Remember the hope I felt. The comfort I felt. The joy. The pride. Remember the tears streaming down my dirt covered face. Remember my expression of horror on my face, too innocent to be caught in this evil world's fighting. Remember the nightmares and demons that will haunt me for the rest of my life--if I'm lucky. But if I lose my life--and with it, lose my mother and father's precious memories, my younger brother and older sister, and my proud grandparents--I lose my life for my beliefs and the people I died for. If I lose my life than I ask only one thing of you---Remember me. Because I may have lost my life so you could live yours in freedom."
That’s an excellent passage! Is it from a book? Or did you write it yourself?
That was beautiful! 😮❤ Thank you for sharing this!
Shaw Austin Thank you. I wrote it myself.
That's amazing! That passage is a credit to your writing ability - very well composed.

@@shawaustin2938 Your welcome pal, I just saw it for the second time I really like it yeah I agree this is for the unknown soldier that fights in the front line first to fight get injured and die, and back then there were thousands of soldiers for bot sides North and South that died Brother vs Brother worst was the civil was ever... I like that there is realism too from the uniforms to the sharpshooter's rifles, it gives a nice message and I will sub so to know when the next film will arrive. @@RookieAce I was born in Germany,.........because politics and politicians are COMPLETE MAGGOT COCKSUCKING ASSHOLES!
I love the short film it shows how even the worst of men can be good at some times in their life and not every confederate soldier was bad and not every Union soldier was always good, I hope everyone in our society today realizes that most of the Confederate soldiers in the Confederate army we're just poor farmers not even able to own their a slave. poor Farmers that enlisted in the Confederacy we're just trying to get money to get food for their families so that they wouldn't starve to death. please tell me that there are people that know about this and that we don't forget our history and cause another civil war
So true, Nick! Rarely in any conflict is one side 100% good and the other 100% evil. Usually, it’s more complex than that. Thank you for sharing your thoughts here! 🙂👍
Amen. As someone who spent a long time believing that the Civil War was ONLY about slavery, it came as quite a revelation when I learned more about the history and political tensions at the time. That is why I enjoyed making this film with Cole, since it is based almost entirely around the idea that neither side was innocent (or evil) in this affair.
You did a great job!
Thanks! :)

Hey there Paul!
This is one of the articles we referred to most heavily while writing the film's script. It's a bit dense, but if you'd like a really detailed look into the lives of the Berdan Sharpshooters, it's really worth a read. I've also talked with Cole, and we'll see about getting the link into the film's description as well.

That's amazing
I lead the FB group Civil War Movies & Series. You can share this video if You wish. I think RUclips eliminates the links, but You can find it with the name I mentioned.
Thank you for the invitation! I'd be happy to share it there. 😊
That sounds like a neat idea!
I know this is kind of a old video but hopefully I can get a response I am trying to make a RUclips mini series about the revolutionary war and I am having trouble finding blank firing guns from the 17th and 18th century and was wondering where did you get the guns for this film would appreciate the information lol
Happy to help! As we could not use real firearms while shooting in a state park, we purchased nonfiring replicas by Denix. They also were cheaper (about $200) than real blank-firing muskets (about $1000). You can purchase Denix replicas from a lot of different online stores. I forgot where we got ours… 🤔 My advice? Do a Google search for “Denix replica musket”. Just make sure you choose the correct model that was in service during the Revolutionary War, and you should be good to go!
We added in the muzzle flash and smoke in post, using a program called Hitfilm 2. That program is a bit out of date now, so we’ve since upgraded.
Is this where you will be discussing the film today ?
Absolutely! Cole and I will be available all day to discuss your thoughts!
Yessir! :D
@@shawaustin2938,, I wanted to learn more about the uniforms used in the film. When I lived in Tenn I got to visit many of the battle sites and historical areas. I remember hearing at the battle of Franklin museum about how Union soldiers would get new uniforms around Christmas due to wear, tear, lice and other wool eating factors. The film made me think of that because the uniforms seemed in good shape and not all powder and blood smeared. At least not until Cole got shot. :)
@@RookieAce Tell me more about the rifle. Sharps, Henry,, Springfield ? Did you use different types for the rebel soldier ?
Cole did most of the costume research. I think he'd know the most about the historical stuff. I had to work on the makeup, and I can safely tell you that it was distressing what we had to do to those uniforms. They looked so nice when they first arrived...then we tore holes in them and smeared dirt and fake blood on them.
