  • Official name: Grove Road Level Crossing
    Date filmed: 26/04/2021
    Video filmed at 16:43
    Route: Marshlink Line
    - Rye Station
    Location: The Grove, Rye
    Trains:
    Lowering 1 (0:00):
    171 402 (Southern) - 1:50
    2D43 Ashford International ➡ Eastbourne
    Lowering 2 (2:42):
    171 803 (Southern) - 4:55
    2D46 Eastbourne ➡ Ashford International
One of two level crossings located within Rye, this level crossing is located just away from the Eastern end of the station, which is the passing loop for this section of the line with off-peak services timetabled to meet each other here. This level crossing has four fairly quiet alarms which rather uniquely are located within each of the four barrier boxes. Both the alarms and barriers here date back to 2019 and have been renewed since my previous visit here.
The level crossing activated within only 20 seconds after raising in this video, which only just gave me enough time to make it to the other side. All four alarms are individually heard in this video as I managed to cross the road to hear what each sounded like during each lowering sequence, at all times keeping a safe distance from the barriers.
    Thanks for watching!

Great video! Interesting that they kept the alarms in the gate mechs when upgrading the crossing, I'm guessing they didn't want to have to rerun the wiring too much or something? Definitely ain't something that could be done with the gate mechs used here in the US, lol.
Also seen a good few crossings here in the US located next to or inside of passing sidings. The latter can be especially annoying if one train has to stop on the crossing you're trying to film, and its either due to meet multiple other trains or the train(s) it's due to meet there are some distance out still.

Thank you! It would've been too much of a job to rewire it all so that the alarms could be fitted externally. It would've had to be fully renewed all-together. That does sound annoying if you had a crossing in a passing loop and one of those situations arose. Here in Rye, it tends to vary which crossing of the two remains lowered and which raises when the trains meet here every hour, and that can be annoying if you're expecting the one you're at to raise and it stays lowered for both.
