    Hi there, yep just put a drip tray under them and prize the bails clip down with a screw driver, the RHS one can be a bit fiddly to juggle over the rocker arms and the body but they come off pretty easy.
    Pays to have a new gasket on hand for each side too.

    Great job on video, thanks. I am having trouble finding information on how to inspect the distributor itself. For example, is the vacuum advance and centrifugal advance both working? My distributor is installed as you described, however it seems "stuck" internally providing almost no advance. I am not sure how to proceed short of a replacement.

    • @BoostedVW
      @BoostedVW  5 лет назад +1

      The vac part is easy to test, if you suck on the hose the arm should move, if it doesn’t the diaphragm is bad.
      Seized centrifugal Weights is common, there’s a felt pad under the rotor that needs oiling each service, most get forgotten and seize up.
      You would probably need to pull the shaft out and soak it in something for a few days to free it up.

  • @fenixfire009
    @fenixfire009 8 лет назад

    What would you recommend instead of an 009 for a buggy with all vacuum ports removed? The VW buggy specialist doing the restoration recommended the 009 over the 1970's era electronic advance it was built with. 1967 HO motor code, so single port.

    • @BoostedVW
      @BoostedVW  8 лет назад

      It's fairly hard to remove the vac port on the carb for the distributor, most people just cap them off, is it still a stock 30pict carb?
      009s work a little better with them than the later 1600 carbs but still a vac advance will perform much better

    • @fenixfire009
      @fenixfire009 8 лет назад

      So I downloaded an owners manual for the Weber DFEV and did a thorough search and it is there, though the nipple has been removed and the hole tapped for a hex socket set screw. I assume since I have a lathe I could make a threaded nipple to change it over.

    • @BoostedVW
      @BoostedVW  8 лет назад

      Oh right sorry didnt realise you werent running a stock carb.
      not sure what the setup on a weber progressive is, I steer clear of them.

      The 009 distributer is fine. I haven't touched a vw in 20 years but I always thought the 009 was an improvement as long as a person knows how to drive.

    • @BoostedVW
      @BoostedVW  8 лет назад

      009s need to be timed with a timing gun so they max out at 30degrees.
      that aside having to close the mixture screw righht off is a sign its getting too much fuel, check the float level and also the jet sizes

    I don't understand what difference it makes if the engine is TDC on cylinder #1. No matter which cylinder the engine is on the distributor will only fit one way. It's not like you can turn the distributor 90 degrees and put the distributor back in. But even if you turn it 360 degrees, you are right back where you started. The distributor only fits one way.

    • @BoostedVW
      @BoostedVW  6 лет назад +1

      Philip Culver this is how people get into trouble not understanding how it works.
      Not meaning to offend but what you said is gibberish, the distributor can be installed any direction you put it in.
      You often see them fitted 90 degrees out which works as long as the plug leads are realigned to suit but the #1 notch is no longer for #1

    • @AmosMosesJr
      @AmosMosesJr 6 лет назад

      "These distributors all have the #3 cylinder timing running 3 degrees less advanced than the other cylinders due to the fact that oil cooler is located inside the fan shroud, resulting in warmer air being directed to the left side cylinders. The #3 cylinder got the worst of it and overheated/detonated a little at normal advance."

    • @BoostedVW
      @BoostedVW  6 лет назад +1

      J Man the early single port distributors were like that but not the later dual port SVDA and DVDA like these, they fixed that issue with the offset doghouse oil cooler
