    But it costs less than a 480 at launch! That is the main point people are forgetting. I don't care it's the same, most 3rd party cards were overclocked, this one is overclocked, and it has better cooling - It's a much better 480, and it costs less than 480 would cost just a few months ago... it's a win win for new people interested in upgrading their GPU

    My board died after 2.5 years. I found that the two 10A fuses were blown. On debugging the my board, I came across this video. According to this video, the board is supposed to have 6 phase VRM for the GPU BUT Phase 1 (as mentioned on this video) is NOT enabled. If you look carefully at the board components, resistors R5177 & R5178 near the two 10A fuses are NOT populated. One ends of these resistors are connected to the Phase 1 DrMOS SIC632 (it's NOT SIC632A) Vin Pin and the other ends connected to the Fuse NF102 (6-PIN PCI-e connector).
    Since these two resistors are NOT installed, in effect Phase 1 is not enabled. Thus this board ONLY has 5 phase VRM.
    It is really strange why Sapphire would do this since they populated the board with all the components for this Phase EXCEPT linking the Phase to 12v Input. Why ?
    Also, Phase 2 input is via the 6-Pin PCI-e 12v connector and the manual suggests that you do not need to use the 6-Pin connector - just the 8-Pin. In that case, Phase 2 will not be used. So if you JUST use the 8-Pin connector to power the board, then ONLY 4 phases are used to power the GPU chip.
    BTW, I fixed my board after replacing a shorted capacitor on Phase 5.

    I know you usually don't revisit PCB's but it would be awesome for you to do a side by side comparison of some PCBs. 480 vs 470 nitros and 480 vs 580 nitros would be awesome! Regardless thanks for all the videos man, and this one so soon! As soon as they released the NDA I was hoping to find a breakdown from you, and I did :D

      performance isn't much further ahead than the 480 with the cost of higher power usage.
      it's perfectly fine if you have an old card, but if you already have a 480 or a 1060 it'd be a sidegrade with no real benefit.

    Sapphire RX 580 performs the best of the current available cards when you look at the noise level and the temperature. Asus is a close second and MSI realy fucks up again, even worse than with the RX 480 from the looks of (much more noise, little difference in temperature, the temperature for Sapphire RX 580 during load is fine). Buildzoid was quite negative about that card if I remember correctly.

    Hello. I have the same card. I recently saw that in games that use over 3gb of vram(i have the 4gig version with Elpida memories) some small dashes of purple light appear on the screen after some time playing (can barely see them).
    I thought that the vram might be bad so I installed OCCT to test it. 1 minute into the test and I already have 7k errors. What does this mean? Could the thermal pads be that old? Is my card dying?... What can I do? I bought some thermal pads and plan on replacing them, but I have a feeling it might no be that. Help :(

    less phases = worse voltage, since more ripple voltage is introduced.

    Hello AHO, good review of this card.
    What i think AMD did is just a plug and play card. Their cards are just for this purpose. You can't toy with them unless you know what you are doing. Overall good job for this, i hope that more "tech reviewers" see you and ask you to review stuff, technically though.
    You could benefit more from your audience if you had a better wrighting style though.
    It's a bit hard to read sometimes, not the color as you could go pink and still have a tremendous style, but the writing is hard to follow.
    Hope i don't hurt your feelings on this. You are good at what you do, enjoy. :)

    @actuallyhardcoreoverclocking I know this video was awhile ago but if you had time it would be awesome if you could test rgb led header on this board to see how it outputs and if it is a standard 3 pin or 4 pin l ask as I have the 570 version of this card which is exactly the same minus a few cores but sapphire trix software is the only way to control the rgb and it is terrible so if the led uses a standard header it could be adapted to run on a regular rgb controller only current have slight oc on my card as my psu is a bit small for my system

    Samsung gddr5 ICs are still better. They have a better process than hynix limit is IMC as you guessed.
    580 clocks better under ln2 ;). not by much but enough to beat the 15720 FS of the RX480 on the bot. 1750~

    Do you think 4gb vram is enough for 1080p i mean for 2 or 3 years like getting a rx580 4gb now or just go 8gb?

    SK Hynix memory chips ? Now I know how they saved those additional 10$ on the MSRP... from personal experience those chips suck. Can't go over 7Ghz memory on my RX 470 because over that frequency the BIOS sets timings which are so bad that even @7.5GHz the memory is slower than before...

    • @TheWarTube
      @TheWarTube 7 лет назад

      Yea, I did some testing with 3DMark graphics score and it's the same crap... i'm just keeping my memory locked on 7ghz and try to push the core as high as it can go (1350 so far, haven't really raised the voltage tho)

    • @TheWarTube
      @TheWarTube 7 лет назад

      it depends if the memory chips can actually sustain tighter timing without stability issues... anyways for now i'm not gonna mess with the BIOS since the card is less than 2 months old and i want it to last for a while ;)

    Do you mind doing a walk through of a gigabyte 580 8gb?
    (gigabyte rx 580 8gb gaming / gaming8g)
    How big of an overclocking difference would I be getting with 8+6 instead of the 8 pin 580 8gb? I can hit 1411 on gpu with a 50mv increase but i can't seem to get it stable over that no matter the voltage. Is this the limit of these cards? The xfx model seems. To have the highest base oc.. I haven't bothered to push the memory as the difference seems nominal but I set it to 2100 at the stock voltage.
    I saw on gamers nexus they hybrid modded a 480 8gb and he only cooled the outer rows of Mosfets leaving the entire middle row of vrms Un-sinked. How big of a deal is this? Is it OK to just cover most of them?
    I attempted to hybrid mine with a kraken g10 and a custom modded antec 620 with a 240mm rad and res and the flow is good but I've heard that cpu cold plates are bad for gpus.. Do I need to get a clc with a specific cold plate designed for a gpu or is the difference nominal?
    I have copper sinks for the vrams from my 290x kit but the thermal tape is shot and the 290x had one row of vrms so the heatsink won't cover two rows.. I tried with just fans blowing directly on the vrms on both sides of the die but it throttles immidiately even though the gpu core is at 30c or so. Hwinfo seems to occasionally show vrm temps but I can't figure out why I can't see them in gpuz or any other sensor software and I've tried them all. It looks like it could be a conflict perhaps but I've disabled everything and I can't see the vrm Temps in any other app and in hwinfo it shows it sometimes but the reading is slightly grayed out but seems to be stuck at like 45C and then I can't get it to show again.. I'm using the Asus software for fan control on the mobo (z170 pro gaming/aura with a 7700k and 16gb 3000mhz Cl15 for reference) so maybe that's what's conflicting? Nonetheless, the backplate on the other side of the vrms is burning hot with the stock cooler but the gpu core temp doesn't exceed the high 70s with the stock cooler. I just like liquid more.. Lol
    I've had cards in the past that didn't need any vrm cooling but I realize all cards are different and amd seem to be quite hot and power hungry from what I've seen in the past. Any thoughts on this are greatly appreciated and thanks for making these videos. Some of the best tech content I've seen.definitely subbing. Ty

    Do you think that flashing this bios on a Sapphire nitro RX480 could give issues because of the extra 6 pin? and extra phase? the obvious answer is a yes but I'm hoping for a no.

    Do you think the lower power consumption is worth getting a 480 instead of the 580? I was planning on getting a 480 until rumors of the 500 series started swirling. Now I want a 580 but I'm afraid that my 500W PSU won't be enough.

    • @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking

      Unless you have a 9590 a stock clock 580 will be just fine on a 500W PSU.

    Hey, Buildzoid - I have a good Sapphire nitro RX480 OC, Reached 1470 on air without any modding to the cooling, do you want it as a loan for some OC testing and results?

    can someone tell me what tweaks you can do to Windows to improve scores

    • @smashtime1904
      @smashtime1904 7 лет назад +1

      Timothy Lindblom you talking about using a ryzen system? cuz that's just come down to updating the BIOS and most recent updates the new AMD power profile for Windows. if you're using Intel switch to the performance profile the maximize core usage and then increase priority of the program being used everything else is going to be Hardware dependent so like what graphics card and motherboard you're using... I mean this is literally the most vague question ever hahaha

    • @SuperCaptain4
      @SuperCaptain4 7 лет назад

      Sam M. Atherton no im talking about optimizing my OS for overclocking

    • @smashtime1904
      @smashtime1904 7 лет назад +1

      What I said is the basic way of doing just that, but an "optimized" overclock is done manually uefi side and windows doesn't play a huge part in that - windows is just the os the user friendly interface that allows you to use your computer for stuff like internet and games. optimize the power profile to allow for 100% CPU usage and maybe dedicate more resources to just the task at bay(which can actually cause crashes). But knowing whether youre using ryzen or Intel is kinds key here cause the optimization you speak of is really done mostly by windows itself and you just set a couple of settings based on what they've given you to work with...
