RogerWilco They didn't. Actually, they did a bunch of shows for several weeks, then they broke for a bit. Read Jim Henson's latest bio and you'll see how they worked.
+RogerWilco Hahaha! Great name and profile pic, Roger :P Sierra all the way!!!! But you will never see a movie or show, as creative and in-depth as the Muppets.
The original Muppet Show was an incredible show. Hilarious from the beginning to the end. So creative. You never knew what to expect when the Muppet Show theme began on your TV. It wasn’t just a show, it was a weekly event. I wish they’d rerun the entire series on TV now uncut, the way they were originally broadcast. I’d definitely watch em all!
Danny Lawson It was also that these guys had worked together for years at first, so there was some chemistry already. Even when new people joined, they started as "right hands" and learned the craft very well so they could get their own characters.
Jim Henson was a genius...always loved watching the Muppet show as a kid. I have worked my whole career in the video/film production business. This segment brings back alot of memories and gives me a deeper appreciation for the muppets. Fascinating insight into the voices, characters, stage direction, blocking, and camera angles that went into the show!
I watch this documentary every couple of months for a new spark of inspiration. Muppets have always fascinated me and they got so inventive with the show over the years.
That is interesting to find out and makes sense, that when the muppets are walking around, the stage sets are actually high, so the actors can just walk.
Same, it was like Muppets and Yellow Submarine.. gosh when I look at footage of Jim Henson on set it's like looking at the Beatles in the Get Back documentary. He's a very quiet rock star, and every episode of The Muppet Show was an album he made. Jim is that high up for me as a personality and creative icon in pop culture. He's the only celebrity I can say "I wanna be like that guy" and I know nothing will ever cancel him.
I am 55 years old, I was blessed to be raised on Sesame Street As my mom brought me pancakes and then as a teenager ,to see the awesomeness of the Muppet show ..Alice Cooper ,Raquel Welch, all the other stars -movies and TV .. Nothing but happiness
First of all I First saw this as a Child in the 80's and remembered it fondly, but could never find it again.. So rediscovering it 37 years Later Almost brought tears to My eyes..and Finally, not judging, but look how bloodshot and High a lot of the Puppeteers look during Rehearsals lol..they Must have had a Blast!
I know that I can't be the only one who cried when he died! Really cried. Such a gentle genius hippy who saw a way to make the world a better place, one child at a time ❤️🕊️
I swear that every time I watch the puppets, I remember my beautiful days and tried to prevent my tears. I wish with all my heart that I met one of the characters who embodied this wonderful work
The amount of creativity to make the show even happen, let alone the writing and performing is insane. And it all had to be in sync. It's amazing to see.
Thank you for posting this. I am finally reading Jim Henson's biography and this was great to watch after reading the section on the Muppet show. Its good to put names and faces together after you read about the performers. I think Jim Henson had the perfect career arc. It took him longer than he thought it would to get an opportunity like the Muppet Show but all that time spent doing commercials and specials and appearances really prepared him for what it took to make the Muppet Show superior in every way. When the Major league called he was ready. And he did all this work and much more without being a jerk to the people around him. He wasn't perfect of course and some performers often felt left out or got their feelings hurt but he tried to make them feel part of something special and loving. and fun.. He loved what he did and truly felt that it was play more than work. His like won't be seen again for a long while.
I don't think some of the performers sometimes felt "left out" as much as they were "busy with other stuff". Frank Oz, for example, wasn't in many Muppet projects during the late '80s, including performing on Sesame Street that often, but that was because he was beginning a career as a film director.
To this day, hearing the Muppets theme song still fills me with a feeling of effervescent joy, a light inside that goes back from the child-me who watched these in the 70s and loved them to grown up me now, normally rather bitter and depressed but seeing these shows and characters, feels like that child again, hopeful, trusting, believing in magic and the fun of show business without being sullied by the knowledge I have, seeing the innocence and joy and accepting and embracing it, not doubting it. I wish I was part of it, somehow.
wow.very enlightening.never realized what all went into making the show.you guys, all of you, were amazing.Jim,you...are... sorley..missed.Frank,thankyou sooo much for your wit and talent.Jerry,wow.all you guys are amazing.the show would not have worked without all of you talent.thankyou for 35 yrs of your remarkebel creativity.you inspire us all. thankyou.
Me too grew up with them in the late 70's early 80's and when they brought out the Muppet show on DVD I had to have them now I own all the seasons and all the movies and they still make me laugh Jim Henson was a Genius with these guys
I was born in 1979, and the Muppets were my Childhood. I even wrote Kermit fan mail lol, I remember seeing this Documentary as a kid- (decades ago) and I always wanted to see this again...now finally after at least 25 years or more I get to watch it again! Thanks for posting this? RIP JiM HENSON, and the other man who also held my Childhood in the palms of his hands....RIP STAN LEE. Also.....RIP to RICHARD HUNT, I know after he passed away from HIV they retired the Scooter character for several years.
Love the clip where you see Jim doing Kermit and Frank only doing Fozzie's voice. I wonder also if the bear doing Fozzie in another language doesn't get heckled by Statler and Waldorf.
mine too! My dad liked Floyd the guitarist in the Dr.Teeth band -- he had the fluffy white eyebrows. I liked Rowlf. My kids enjoyed The Muppet Movie -- starring Jason Segal and Amy Adams and we are definitely looking forward to the next one that hits the theatres. Hopefully it will be soon. I thought that "Man or Muppet" song was one of the best in the movie!
The amount of dedication, work that goes into the Muppet shows and movies is incredible, jim Henson was a genius and really made you believe the puppets are real! His son brian has worked so hard to keep the Muppets alive, the whole family has ❤ The Muppet show is hilarious All the guest stars were incredible, they really got into the show and you could see that they loved it !
THE MUPPET SHOW........ONE OF A KIND...they just made another muppets movie for the box office...although kermit is silenced frank oz is still here...JIM HENSON..will be missed and responsible for the muppet dynasty and many shows followed there lead..A GREAT TEAM OF WRITERS........im hoping to be blessed by this review...............
Always loved the muppets, it is wonderfull to see the magic behind cameras... and funny thing to think about David Cross (arrested development) doing time travel and working at his dream job
I just love this.. thank you so much for uploading! About the Whatnots: I just ordered three whatnot muppets from FAO Schwarz, it was their very last shipment (and sold for only 8 dollars each, originally 129). So I got the 3 very last customized whatnot muppets from Fao Schwarz :)))))))))). It's been on my wishlist for years and I got them just in time !
If anyone is interested please check out Rowlf's beginning on the Jimmy Dean show from the 50's. They have some of his skits on RUclips. They are amazing! Also Kermit and Fozzie co-hosted the Tonight Show. Again EPIC!
How am I ever gonna bring Jim Henson, Richard Hunt, Jerry Nelson and many other late crew members from The Muppet Show back from the dead, back to life, bring The Muppets and The Entertainment Industry back to what it originally once was? I have absolutely no idea at all. I really wish that I was God. I would absolutely do a lot more than just my best to change things from the worst to the absolute best.
Josh Berman I agree with you. When Jim Henson died, so did the muppets. Everything after that was trashy and dumbed down. Like we didn't have enough of that already.
Even worse Liz, most kids are tuning into really bad Children's Networks like Nickelodeon and even every Disney Network is a grown ups nightmare. Full grown men are acting like children and a lot of women are always cat fighting with each other on TV. No wonder why I would rather watch RUclips instead.
Would you believe the Sesame Street from the early 70s is considered inappropriate for children today? Heaven forbid Cookie Monster gorge on cookies or smoke a pipe. I worked in a church that counseled a lot of families and learned something interesting--the smartest, most respectful kids, regardless of race, class, one or two parents, all had one thing in common--little or no TV. Here on YT kids as young as 11 are watching MTV videos (from back when MTV was MTV), old variety, comedy and game shows, and classic cartoons. Oh well, off to watch the Muppets with the Star Wars cast.
I don't like all modern Sesame and I don't like all classic Sesame. I like whatever I like and what pleases me the most whether it's from retro Sesame or Elmo Sesame. I like Sesame Street and that's all there is. I think it really is a great idea that people today watches either very little or no TV at all because besides that most of the stuff that they show nowadays is pure junk. Way too much TV is absolutely no good. I wish that I realized that a lot sooner Liz. You don't even have to wait nor spend your money just to watch The Star Wars Muppet Episode. You can easily watch it on RUclips. How cool is that? Anyway, I don't wanna hold you up any longer just for you to watch that Classic Season 4 Episode. Especially that everything will be complete and uncut unlike what I originally saw on WCBS TV 2.
Some of the most familiar and popular Muppets are full-bodied characters. Big Bird is the best known example, though his Sesame Street cohorts include Snuffy and his family, Bruno the Trashman, Sam the Robot and Barkley. The Muppet Show played host to Sweetums, Thog, Timmy Monster, The Mutations, Doglion, Behemoth, Fletcher Bird, and Sopwith the Camel. The Gorgs loomed large on Fraggle Rock, while Bear and his friend Ursa star in Bear in the Big Blue House. Later examples include Mopatop on Mopatop's Shop. Various overseas versions of Sesame Street have had their own larger than life stars, including Kippi Ben Kippod, Boombah, Nimnim, and Zeliboba. Feature films brought a new raft of full-bodied characters, including Miss Finch, Mommy Dodo, Daddy Dodo, Marie Dodo and Donnie Dodo from Follow That Bird, and The Ghost of Christmas Present and The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come from The Muppet Christmas Carol. Creature Shop productions such as Dinosaurs and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles made extensive use of more advanced types of realistic suit characters.
I remember watching this as a kid. Thank you for posting it! I'm thinking the subtitles are Dutch? It reminds me of German, but I know it's not German. I can kind of understand it though since I can read German fairly well.

Vaudeville.... guys like George Burns, Milton Berle and Bob Hope probably loved The Muppet Show because it was the closest to old Vaudeville they'd seen in ages!
yes but it wasn't this time that Jim was about to Begin The dark Crystal and then fraggle Rock so it was sort of a look back at the end of a run and what he's going to be doing in the future at the time
I am amazed that they could do a show each week. The amount of creativity and effort is astonishing.
RogerWilco They didn't. Actually, they did a bunch of shows for several weeks, then they broke for a bit. Read Jim Henson's latest bio and you'll see how they worked.

@@sha11235 It's funny, I think every Muppet performer in history has done right handing, except for Jim Henson himself.
@@sha11235 That's Great
This level of talent, drive and excellence wil likely never exist again...
I hate to say it, but you may be right.
Thanks again Jonathan.

I think that thought would make Jim sad.

starilie it's fascinating isn't it, I'm currently planning on making my own puppet.
HBO are giving us a new Muppets doco soon!
One thing I have to say: every time I saw Kermit doing his tap dance routine, I would've sworn I saw his "feet", that's how convincing it was!
R.i.p Jim Henson 1936-1990
Andrew Cottington R.I.P Carroll Spinnie 1933-2019
When you don't see Jim, then when you hear his voice, it actually doesn't sound terribly different than kermit's.
It's hard to believe that no studio in the U.S. thought this show would work. So he had to take it to England
*cough* Star Wars *cough* The English understood concepts, Americans had to be shown (was the general thinking in the 20th century)
Blame Sesame Street. All the American networks denied Jim because they thought puppets were for kids
There will never be another time like the 70s so much good television with so many devoted people
Jim Henson, wherever you are, I hope you found the rainbow connection.
45 now and still love the muppets.

I know this show has been such a joy to me and my family. My parents would buy all the movies for us when we were little.
Jim Henson was a genius. He died waaaaayyyy too soon.
So, when should he have died?
Dennis Regling Not at the age of 53 from a curable disease.
Jim didn’t want to go to the hospital until it was too late
Jim should of went to the hostiptal or else Steve wouldn't be fired.
If Jim Henson is dead how is the Muppet still on Because somebody’s mean Muppets most wanted and The Muppets

I love their camaraderie. I only wish I had been a puppeteer with them
This was one of my favorite shows when I was younger!
And now it's owned by Disney, the place creativity goes to die.
0x777 It’s too wholesome and has lost its anarchy and edginess. After all one of the first episodes was called sex and violence.
bookwoman53 and that 2015 show went too far with snideness. Hopefully the rumored new show on Disney plus will be better!
Disney deserves better CEOs to make the muppets live up to Jim’s legacy

interesting seeing the Muppeteers in action bringing these iconic characters to life.
I forget until I watch behind the scenes footage that this was the muppet era where everyone(except Frank) had a really big beard
All my life I´ve got the dream to perform with the muppets. On stage with one of my chilhoodidols Miss Piggy.
