Blue Magic Hair Grease vs Shea Butter | Moisturizing SUPER DRY "Natural Hair" for Length Retention

- Опубликовано: 15 сен 2024
- I think this is a battle the natural hair community has been waiting for. When natural hair became popular amongst Black women well over a decade ago, there was also a movement to discontinue the use of grease and petroleum/petrolatum products and replace them with shea butter and natural oils. But was that the best decision? Is the shea butter hype real? LET's FIND OUT!

I like the way both sides look but I do like the volume of the grease side!
I do too but it was dry chile
Oh snap...."Samantha "😆 is here y'all 💛
Yes!! I tried the grease a month ago and that is my go to every time. Moisture and shine... Love it!!
@@SheReaDelSol you said you are usually more heavy handed. I think if you used a bit more grease and a bit more water, your grease side may have felt more moisturized.
Of course, it may not have either.
No matter what, your hair is beautiful, and BOTH sides look great to me.
Both sides look good but the shea butter side appears less fluffy/more defined than the grease side.
yuppp
The Shea butter side definitely looks more moisturized and shiny
I agree!
since it's for 22 USD, I was wondering what would happen if I used a different brand, would it still be as moisturizing? (Well, sealing moisture is more accurate)
I cut my hair due to heat damage in January, my wedding is in September. I needed a for sure way to keep my hair from breaking and maintain length. I knew grease was the only way. I use the Super Sure Gro one a week to seal in moisture during wash day. I use it after my leave in and my hair has grown significantly. I was kicked out of a natural hair group on Facebook for trying to show my results. The only thing with grease is you must use a SLS to wash it out. Therefore you must deep condition afterwards
Glad you’re thriving!
There are rules to be in fb groups?
@@ReginaB4JC For that group yes. I couldn't believe it
what is a SLS?
What’s your hair porosity? Also what leave in you use
I would agree: the Shea Butter looks much more moisturized and shinier and healthier than the grease side. 💕💕
I was shooook
Because grease is a sealant...The Shea butter is the moisturizer
A cheaper alternative for the Jane Carter is Camille Rose's Brown Butter Melt. Works great and it's only 8 bucks.
Oh I love CR. Thank you!!
Team Shea Butter 🙋🏾♀️. I was using chebe but now I’m using Shea Butter. I like mixing mine with oils and whipping it up. My hair loves it 💁🏾♀️
Naturally Dunn i’ll venture into making my own soon
can i still whip shea butter only by itself?
Great idea to whip up the shea butter
I prefer the grease side, but it is not my hair. LOL. I love the fluffiness!
I have definitely taken it back to the basics with using grease and water on my hair. Blue magic and water and twist. Looks good on both sides.
My older sister still swears by Blue Magic!!! I brought her 7 to fit my suitcase, she didn't know about the magical gro she went nuts!!! I am still African Pride Miracle Gro since '92 (even though they aren't black no more) but hair grease is always good for our texture!!! Thanks for the Shea butter I am gonna look it up!!
No problem hon!
Im in love with the blue magic (blue) when i use ot in my twist out routine!
I don’t mind the grease side. I tend to like more carefree looks with my hair. I’ve never gotten upset about frizz or desired crazy definition. Have you tried the Ashea’s Shea butter pomade? I’m not sure how similar or different it is to the nourish and shine.
I know people like sealing with grease but I couldn’t handle the feel of it. Even as a kid, I hated the feel. I much prefer oils. My hair has thrived better since using more natural products. Most of my products are affordable for my budget.
Never tried it
I’m the same, I hate the feel of grease.
Personally I use shea butter AND grease as my sealant...keeps my hair moisturized 'till wash day! Have you ever tried Dax's greases? I feel like theirs are even BETTER and keeps my hair even more moisturized for longer than Blue Magic.
What’s your favorite?
@@SheReaDelSol Dax Indian Hemp and Dax Lanolin!
They both look good to me however, I do prefer the original Blue Magic hair grease overall, I make my own hair butter from scratch. I use & love both ☺️💜
Omg you’re so Photogenic 🥰 sending Love from the UK 👋🏾💛
Thank you honey
I make my own whipped Shea butter and my hair is HYDRATED!!! highly recommend and you can make it for very cheap!
Do you have a recipe? I’m going to check it out!
pls give us the recipe
The Shea butter side looks shiny and moisturized from my view
very!
I just get shea butter from walmart, mix it with olive oil & castor oil (all affordable) and I have tons of butter for months. Easy.
I had to move my wash day because I took a nap in the afternoon 😂now am just wishing I could do this with you 😂
LOL
@@SheReaDelSol also could you do a "week in my hair" video☺
I have one already 😩
🤣🤣
The grease side looks fluffier. The Jane Carter side looks shiner and more defined. I'm breaking out my Jane Carter next wash day. I use the original blue magic. My hair stays moisturized all week, but I look forward to trying the nourish and shine.
As you should 🗣🗣
All my hair products together do not amount to $22... Hell they don't amount to $10.
1. Dollar Tree Leave in ($1)
2. Grease ($3-$4)
3. Dollar Tree Pyrithione Zinc Shampoo (I have flakes sometimes and that stuff is great!) ($1)
4. VO5 conditionner ($1)
5. Olive oil for my prepoo (steal some from the kitchen)
That's what I use for now and hair is happy...
Glad you found what works
Love the background colour!!!!🥰
Thanksssss
I love Shea butter I finally got mom mom to try it she was like “I don’t like this it’s too greasy” 😏 yeah sis exactly that’s that moisture locking in. But don’t get me wrong if I’m stranded some where and all they have is grease I’d be a happy queen.
I agree! I have my preference but they both work
I prefer the shea butter side. It looks more defined and moisturized. The grease side is certainly more voluminous!
Correct!
@@SheReaDelSol I just heard your thoughts. 😁 I love using Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter on my hair.
I need to reup on that
I clicked on this video so fast I saw smoke!🤣 I have that same Blue Magic grease in my stash, love it. I picked up a grease the other day called Nature's Blessing, it has some really good ingredients too.
It does!
Yep I have Nature's Blessing grease. I love it
I need both! Your hair looks great after 5 days!
I be telling y’all about that week of moisture
This video inspired me to stop and put my hair in twists. I sprayed with leave in conditioner, then twisted with grease. I noticed halway thru that i felt so relieved. My hair and scalp has been so neglected because i didnt know where or how to start taking care of it. This was a great start. My scalp feels so soothed. I feel at peace. Self care at its finest. Thank you for the inspiration.
“I’mma use this much..I’m heavy handed- I’mma use more stop playin” LOL 😂
LMAO
Both sides definitely have a soft hold. I like using grease with a leave in under it. Grease is a sealant not a conditioner
Yes its a sealant so its obvious that the Shea butter which is a moisturiser would look more moist
Hey SheRea❤️I’m a waver during the hot 🥵 months and I use beeswax to lock my waves in but Blue Magic(blue) is for maintenance along with a good brushing and covering with silky durags. To me, both sides look lovely but I knew there would be a differnce in feel. I actually thought the Blue Magic side would possibly have a greasy residue but not messy.
It didn’t actually. It’s not super greasy if you don’t use a lot
Another great video! The JC shea butter side looks shinier and more defined than the grease side. But I love both sides. I am wearing a protective hairstyle and I used blue magic hair grease & it's been 4 weeks of me wearing my protective style. I was squeezing my braids and my hair is still moisturized and that has never happened with anything else I've used while wearing a protective hairstyle. I know the natural hair forum is not on the hair grease bandwagon but for protective styling I am sold!❤
There’s a place for it, I agree
It's crazy because I've tried to get into shea butter for years and it's never really worked for me, but that good Blue Magic (the original blue one) works wonders! I could definitely tell that the shea butter worked better for you though.
Yupppp
@@SheReaDelSol Btw I watch every single one of your videos (I've even binge watch your playlists as I do my own hair lol) and this is the first time I've commented 😂
Awwww thanks for commenting. Love you lots
Have you tried mango butter? My hair finds shea butter to heavy.
I wish I had known about all the great sales when I first became natural, I was in college like most of us and was broke of course, so I used alot of cheap products that claimed to be natural but provided absolutely nothing for me. For the past two years I've discovered all the amazing sales and coupon codes from different brands, sally's, etc., and I've been able to get my hands on quite a few great products on the expensive side, that work wonders for my hair. My product stash is pretty decent and I owe it all to sales.
These sales weren’t in abundance even a few years ago
Oh wow, that actually does make sense, because now there is more competition due to so many natural hair companies. Thanks for letting me know, I'm so grateful for those sales now!
I wonder who the only hater disliking 2hrs after post.... They be early spreading the hate 👀
It was six mins in, honey... six lol
SheRea DelSol lmfao wow they be camping out your channel's door 😂😂😂I don't think Britney Spears and her latest dance moves have these kind of haters 😂😂
I love when people test these statements rather then just go with what’s in or what big companies say! Everyone’s hair works differently and should treat their hair as such! 👍🏾 Shea butter side looked more defined and it was less frizzy while the other side was the complete opposite.
That’s why I do them!
SheRea DelSol love it!
I can't wait to get through these products. 😔 I've been wanting to try JC FOR-ever!
It’s bombbb
Used the same blue magic castor oil for my mini twist yesterday will be monitoring how my high porosity natural hair will keep moisturizer for this week! Thanks for the video!!!!
Hope you like it!
TFS! Both sides look good but the JC side has a bit of an edge for me... I like the volume/movement.
I agree!
When u catch urself in a lie n say stop playin😭
LMAOOOOOOO
The blue magic grease definitely gave you more volume and definition.
It’s not more defined, but it’s bigger
im loving loving your content =) all these experiment and comparisons and DIY videos but still sprinkling in the hauls and reviews. im living for it! very different to what most YTer's are doing and very interesting and informative.
I’m trying to be fresh! Glad you’re noticing. Thanks so much
I'd like to see a comparison between the Jane Carter and the camille rose ajani balm. But I like the shea butter side more
Oh don’t do this to me lol
@@SheReaDelSol Might have to I heard the Jane Carter has changed its ingredients. Is it still as good? Do you have the new formula or the old one?
I'll stick to my Decononaise imperialism is Dyin pudding, which is shea, mango and avocado butter mix. Grease does nothing for my hair, but make it greasy
Thanks for watching!
Used the same blue magic castor oil for my mini twist yesterday will be monitoring how my high porosity natural hair will keep moisturizer for this week! Thanks for the video!!!! Will try the J.C. BUTTER soon just the mango butter... my relaxed hair hates Mango butter not sure if my natural hair will like it... just been avoiding it... but time to give it a chance 🙈
And you can always return it...
SheRea DelSol I know right just want to find my ultimate sealant because my high porosity has no behavior.... will moisturize it and in one hour it looking like me like I am a joker.... 🙈
I like the butter side better- side note I’m glad you said that about water- I thought I was crazy- I need to trust my judgment more. I’m mad that I didn’t pick up that refresher spray. I bought a bunch of DC’s from the company. Will we be getting a review from them next?! Hope so. Great video!
When i say that refresher is BOMBBBBBBBBB, chile imagine how bomb everything else is.
SheRea DelSol I bought 2 last night lol I could see that it was bomb from your facial expression lol I’m glad they still had it because almost everything else says sold out.
I have to go back to Shea butter. My hair was thriving when I used to use it but the product junkie in me has me out here dibbling and dabbling. Anyway, if you were to add a mousse or gel for hold would you add it before the Shea butter or after?
After
Wow I can see a huge difference in my opinion! The Shea butter side actually looks so defined and shiney I'm sold😍
Correct!!
Was s’posed to be working but was binge watching your videos ALL day. Gurrrrrl, it’s Monday! 😩
Thankfully I got enough ish for dayssss lol
I’ve heard people use hair grease religiously when they also wash they hair weekly . So maybe you would rehydrate on wash day . I think shea butter might be better for longer term protective styles (4 weeks ). I’m team Shea butter then! I will make it with raw butter olive oil, avocado oil & coconut oil . That way I can use it on my skin too😊😊😊😊
Love you She, you always keep it real! I'm glad that Faye recommended you! I love her too!
Awwww thanks!
Your hair is beautiful! Shea butter for the win. You’re the first person I’ve watched to say that water dries your hair out! Thank you! I thought I was going crazy all these years. Lol It dries my hair out too. What was the refresher you used?
I linked it down below!
It dries my hair as well I thought I was the only one
The Shea Butter side definitely looks better, but I’m a grease girl. I know that people love Blue Magic, but it’s not my favourite grease with the exception of the green one. That’s the only one that works well in my hair.
The grease might not have sealed in the moisture because your moisturizer was too light. In my personal experience, the moisturizer has to be heavy for grease to work. Otherwise, my hair comes out dry like yours did.
Love the comparison video, but I’m going to stick to grease since that’s what works for me.
I respect it! My leave in wasn’t light at all. I just used a refresher to impart more moisture.
You are so right. All leave ins don’t work when I use grease.
I will have to try that shea butter. I’m grateful I can afford 20 dollar products because I do care about ingredients ☺️ the Shea butter side looked better to me!
Did, indeed
It’s because it has a “wax” in the ingredients for a soft hold. The hair grease does not.
Both sides look great and your hair looks gorgeous as always 🥰 I tried the Jane Carter butter last year it was so hard I didn’t know what the heck to do with it, but I was not about to throw $22 in the trash so I took it right back to Sally Beauty Supply 😂 Luckily a friend recommended Qhemet Biologics hydrate & twist butter and I haven’t looked back since then. The moral of the story is, get you some natural hair friends, subscribe to SheRea DelSol on RUclips, make sure you turn on your post notifications cause her hair and videos are poppin’ 🗣🗣🗣
Mine isn’t hard at all even when it’s in the A/C but yes, I co-sign everything else 😂😂😂. Love you!
Both sides look good to me
Aww thanks!
I had to use the Nourish and shine for my skin. For me it was a no go. My hair is fine and high porosity. Nothing has the staying power of hair grease for me. Nothing.
I particularly like the one that you used in this video because it smells SO good, and my hair is still moisturized a week later.
Shea butter makes my hair feel dry again by the next day.
I have a couple of large bins filled with products that I am going to use, thanks to your video about using them for other uses.
I had already used up that Nourish and Shine on my skin. It also smelled way too strong for my liking.
natural7ly no problem!
Its interesting to see how the grease looks fluffiest
Grease is only heavy when we over apply it
First Comment! Glad to know I'm not the only one who was wondering about this comparison
I'm surprised there aren't more videos on this
I like the grease side. It could be you used a terrible leave in cause grease rocks!
Grease does rock. Just doesn’t mean it’s the best for me lol
Gorgeous!!
I luuuuuuuuuv Jane Carter Nourish n Shine (why do we always say the whole name, lol). It can last for a few years...the scent fades but it still does what it do!!! Great vid!
Because you gotta put respek on it!
Girl I was not ready for all that 5 days later!! Love😍😍
LOL LOL! Thanks
❤️❤️❤️ love the Shea butter side it’s very visible that the butter side is more moisturizing and I do love the Jane carter but I also love my grease lol great comparison and tfs
TFW!
This is why the availability of travel/sample size is important. Not only can you take it away with you, if things don't work, well its not a big loss. People are prepared to pay if the product hits the high notes.
What angers me sometimes, is how/why some of these companies can justify their prices.
Shea butter won.... but the side twisted with grease isn’t bad. I can’t use blue magic anymore because it breaks out my skin for some reason... after I had my daughter it just wouldn’t cooperate with me anymore. But when I did back in the day, I would layer it on top on a leave in, twist my hair up and take the twists down when dry. Nourish and shine for the win!!!!
Definitely!!
You have more shine, definition and softness on the shea butter side. Just discovered how great Jane Carter Nourish and Shine is. It's $22 but we're worth it.
WORTH IT!
The jane carter nourish and shine is the TRUTH! I will spend my coins on it every time! It’s worth it.
Worth ittttt
I love me some grease and I love the whipped shea butter too, but I use the grease more regularly, because it keeps my hair softer longer. The whip Shea butter I find myself having to apply again after 2/3 days. Anywhos, your hair looks gorgeous boo 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 both sides sexy. 😉
Thank yaaaaa
Hey SheRea 👋🏽
I definitely gotta try using grease as my styler. I do love shea butter for my body but haven't used it yet for my hair. I do use shea butter to loc in moisture for my partners hair. Lol you're so right, you can't seal in dryness. I love both sides of your hair it just depends on what look you're going for. The grease side has more volume and the shea butter side has more definition. I love your earrings and you background. The 5 day end results are flawless. Great video and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching darling
@@SheReaDelSol You're welcome SheRea 🤗
That nourish and shine is a magical formulation.
Idk what JCS put in it
@@SheReaDelSol some magicalblackgirl realness!
@@SheReaDelSol blessings! 💕💕💕💕💕
I LOVE Jane Carter Nourish and Shine! It stays in my stash!
YESSSS
Yea everyone needs to try nourish and shine at least once, buy it during a Sally’s sale 😉
Word!!!
Love the review.. 💕💕 yes the Shea butter looks nice! ...
Thank ya!
The Shea butter side definitely looks more defined!!! That PSA about sealing in moisture 🙊🙊🙊😂🗣🗣🗣
It had to be said
I don’t NEED to spend $22 but I WANT to lmfao. I been wanting that shea butter for a whole now
YES to the sheabutter side
It's sooooo gooooood
Love the video!! I love that Nourish and Shine!! Between that and the Oyin Burnt Sugar pomade have been my go to grease replacements. I had one from Bekura but they discontinued 😢.. Hoping to grab the one from Camille Rose one day.. Thanks for sharing!! 💗💗
Thanks for watching lovely
Just a quick question, is that the Moriche fruit?
@@reeshamiller8869 I had the Java balm... I haven't tried that fruit one yet....
👀 ima look up the ingredients in that shea butter and see if i can diy it lmao
As you should lol
That Nourish & Shine is 💣. The last jar I had I used on my skin during the winter and it stayed soft for days. Check her website during the Christmas season sometimes she has excellent deals.
thank you doll!
I have the nourish and shine right here and it hurt to buy it but it feels so good haha but i agree the shea butter side does have less frizz. The nourish and shine reminds me of two products; The Mane Choice "Doesnt get much butter than this" and the Afro Sheen Lush Fro Butter. Both smell AMAZING!! and are a cheaper
Thanks for that insight!
Hi Sherea, I wonder what the comparison would be like between Alikay shea yogurt and the Jane Carter ...hmmm🤔
Why y’all doing this to me
Shea Butter looks more shiny and healthy. But I do like grease too.
It did!
I love Jane Carter Solution. I make my own shea butter mix, but the shine and moisture doesn't compare to JCS. The bed, bath, and beyond by me has coupons for $10 off $30 so I buy it there along with other beauty items. I use it when i want a really bomb twist out. I use my homemade mix for basic styling and sealing. I love these comparison videos. 😊
Yay!! Glad you like them
That Jane Carter, I love it!!! I used to buy it all the time.
It’s gooooodt
@@SheReaDelSol Definitely!! My husband is allergic to an ingredient in it 😭 So I dont really buy it anymore. It has a nice fresh citrus scent too.
I used regular African whipped Shea butter $6.99 and softee bergamot anti hair breakage grease.
Janiya Gowdy I got it from the beauty supply store and it isn’t a name brand. It just says whipped Shea butter from Ghana.
Does it work for your hair?
I was still looking at your earrings instead of your hair at first LOL
You rude lol
@@SheReaDelSol LOL! They were my favorite color. Got threw off but I agreed that the shea butter side was less frizzy and looked softer
Sherri 😘😘
@@SheReaDelSolI noticed some Product Junkie spray 👀 lol. Just got my orders today.
The JC side looks juicier and more defined. That look though... i had to pause and comment. Lol
Lmaoooo
That’s my FAVORITE BUTTER ....as I mentioned Jane Carter never failed me 😂😭 that was my first expensive brand I stand by that butter in college with the spray....my hair was soo nice back than 😂😭
It’s amazingggg
DO NOT SUPPORT the NEW Nourish & Shine collection. They kicked Jane Carter out of her own company, she hasn't been affiliated with the brand in 3 years. IT IS NO LONGER BLACK OWNED.
I heard 😩
Shea butter side is gorgeous 😍😍 ditch the grease guys! It has no nutrients in it! Lol
💕💕
I know your earrings are always on point😄
Thank you! 😊
@@SheReaDelSol Welcome...thank you for this review...although I have never been a fanatic about Jane Carter, it works for you and that is what matters. Peace.
Shea butter side looks good!!!
gooodt
5 days hair looks great
Thank you hon
Shea butter side looks like it beat the grease!! Grease did it’s thang though!!
Grease did too it’s thang. Glad we have have options
Grease, they keep the humidity/frizz to a minimum. But not blue magic, it’s too heavy.
Which do you recommend?
Heyy Love here for this Comparison. 📝✔👍🏾
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Would you do a comparison with grease and the Oyin pomade? I literally had that thought today. Because I want a greaseless grease that's black owned tbh if it would work. Or the Nourish and shine and Oyin Pomade?
Oyin is one of my favorite “greases”. It’s better! Know that lol
Great video. Can you do a video comparing beeswax to a softee hair grease? I prefer to use softee products rather than Blue Magic. Thanks.
Girl honestly, grease is grease to me. I probably won't branch off into other brands. I do want to revisit beeswax for my twists
Enjoyed this comparison video, very interesting indeed. Would love to try the nourish and shine balm but my hair isn't a fan of shea butter. Would you consider doing another comparison video CRN Ajani shine balm v hair grease? 😀. I love the Ajani shine balm.
I do plan to do a grease vs grease video!! Way ahead of you. Thanks for solidifying it’s needed
@@SheReaDelSol ooh. Looking forward to your review. Appreciate it x
You should try Curlsmith products! Bri Hall convinced me to buy them for my hair and I think me and you have similar hair types so I’d love to see how it works for you
It’s on my list!
SheRea DelSol Yay that makes me so excited ! I’ve been using them for a couple of months now and even though it’s expensive I think it has really helped my hair so I really hope you have the same results !
Alajia Which products have you tried/using?
SheRea DelSol I purchased every product in Bri Halls Video ( ruclips.net/video/gCukZcwxzP4/видео.html )
However, you strictly wanted to use Curlsmith they do have shampoo and i have yet to try it. I tried the Curl Quenching Conditioning Wash, Post Biotic Calming Conditioner and Curlsmith Double Cream Quencher. I also use the Mane Choice Pre-Shampoo and if you watch her Vlogmas series she goes through the process in which she steamers her hair with her Pre-poo and deep conditioner. I don’t have a steamer but I have still had good experiences with all of these products. The sequence Pre-Poo, Shampoo, Conditioning Wash, Conditioner and then Deep Conditioner. For styling they have an in shower style fixer, Curl conditioning oil in cream, and I’ve heard it’s great but I haven’t tried it. Good luck !
Thanks for your through comment!
I was looking for a good Shea butter I will pick this one up... I typically used both together...
This one is top notch
I'd be interested in a comparison between your shea butter mix & the Jane Carter butter
I don’t make mixes for my hair. I use them on my skin
I heard u say that water makes your hair dry It makes mine dry to i thought for whatever reason it was just me lol but what do u use for refreshing or instead of water
A refresher spray like the one from Camille Rose
@@SheReaDelSol ok I will try that cuz me and that water dont see eye to eye lol
Great video 💞
