I love the Kinks way more than the Stones or the Beatles. This band is warm, humane, smart and funny - so many dimensions the Big Ones never reached. I've told my wife to have Waterloo Sunset played out in my funeral.
I think one reason is that, as most groups achieve financial success, they start to take themselves too seriously and become more self important. The Kinks innate cynicism about everything (including themselves) would never allow that to happen. They question success; deflate ego and celebrate ordinary people. They never really left Muswell Hill.
The moment where Ray Davies sings "Sad memories I can't recall", the inflection of his voice, the sagging and cracked musical backing, the meaning of the words themselves of course, that moment has always been and will forever remain the platonic definition of wistfulness for me
That's great Lacey, it can be done don't let anyone deter you. Avoid the non-alcoholic drinks, there just a tease. When I went to AA the counselor had a saying, "ONE IS TOO MANY AND TEN IS NOT ENOUGH". Feel free to contact me any time and when I see your notice I'll get back to you asap. Hang in there Lacey, it can be done...
I've thought that the Kinks were a decent band for a long time because I was only aware of their early riffy rock stuff. The more I hear and find out about them, I realize they are EXCEPTIONAL! VERY creative group indeed!
One of my favorite Kinks songs. When Ray Davies sang this at a concert he gave a friend of mine the bear he was using for prop. Unfortunately his mother threw it away thinking it was just an empty beer bottle while cleaning his room. It was this song that my friend introduced me too and told me the story
Here's a story about a sinner, He used to be a winner who enjoyed a life of prominence and position, But the pressures at the office and his socialite engagements, And his selfish wife's fanatical ambition, It turned him to the booze, And he got mixed up with a floosie And she led him to a life of indecision. The floosie made him spend his dole She left him lying on Skid Row A drunken lag in some Salvation Army Mission. It's such a shame. Oh demon alcohol, Sad memories I cannot recall, Who thought I would say, Damn it all and blow it all, Oh demon alcohol, Memories I cannot recall, Who thought I would fall a slave to demon alcohol. Sad memories I cannot recall, Who thought I would fall a slave to demon alcohol. Barley wine, pink gin, He'll drink anything, Port, pernod or tequila, Rum, scotch, vodka on the rocks, As long as all his troubles disappeared. But he messed up his life, went and beat up his wife, And the floosie's gone and found another sucker She's gonna turn him on to drink She's gonna lead him to the brink And when his money's gone, She'll leave him in the gutter, It's such a shame. Oh demon alcohol, Sad memories I cannot recall, Who thought I would say, Damn it all and blow it all, Sad memories I cannot recall, Who thought I would fall, A slave to demon alcohol.
I've been listening to Beatles for years because I really vibe with them and I love what their songs speak of.... then i discovered the Kinks. My god, these guys are not only better than the Beatles in my opinion, but they talk about stuff that actually matters! Straight truth! Such spiritual songwriting, really hits you in the soul.
I agree for sure! Beatles may be better in song writing , but no one has the soul of the Kinks. Beatles are great, but they rarely crack the outer layer of human existence. The Kinks hit your heart.
It's good to see young people realize the social genius of Ray and Dave Davies songwriting. I have followed them from the sixties thru the 70 s and 80 s and got to see them perform live in the 70 s.
we understand underrated is terribly underused but don't be an undereducated underclass- don't feel under-appreciated. you are where you fit in the underworld
Kinks were always there...just under the Beatles and the Stones...but they were always there...We always loved them...regardless of the other two greats..
I agree with most of your belief...but I really dont like the stones, I know I kbow, ill be crucified for my opinion, but alas I do admit I own n listen to SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUESTED
+Michael Hooky Me, too. And today on my wall, I have the original 3-D vinyl cover that I got for Christmas in 1967, framed and displayed, right next to Sgt. Pepper.
I sing this song all the time at nights out but it doesn't go down too well in Dumbarton, a town dominated by the whisky industry and populated by alcoholics. Never mind, I can only sing the truth....
If you have the vinyl, there are some great shots of the boys in a bar in England. Ray Davies was a good-looking dude and a top-10 songwriter (top 5 for me). Great days of wasted youth. I was 21 when this came out and tried my best to emulate that classic look. God bless the Kinks.
cometome255 For months I held up Lola vs Powerman as one of the greatest albums ever made. Then I listened to Village Green, and I thought that was their best by far. Then I got Arthur on vinyl and it became one of my favorite albums of all time. Now I'm working through Muswell Hillbillies, and I think it's happening again.
Cómo argentino y amante del tango y de The Kinks digo que está canción es una joya, tanto la composición musical como su letra! Me sorprendieron gratamente una vez más!
david dullmour ?? keith Richards same sentence? you utter moron what are you thinking?? Richards wrote and played guitar to so many classics , ok later years he was shite no worse than dullmour and dull Floyd without the charisma and energy of syd they were mediocre

Love this, them. Remember my big brother Muck listened to them downstairs, I wanted to hear it with him, always got picked up and tossed up the steps, miss him.

I can't count how many nights my brother, our wives, and a handful of friends would caterwaul this song at the top of our lungs while sloshed, banging it out on the baby grand and giving it all we had...
Treat yourself to a terrific album, Muswell HilIbillies, every track a winner, I've had it on vinyl and cd, I Love It, thank you, Gentlemen...The Kinks!!! Paisley Tom 06 22 2012
Me too! I was so surprised and thrilled when I was reading the book and I saw that one of the characters was listening to the Kinks, one of my all-time favorite bands. I had been a big Kinks fan already before, but thanks to Maggie I started listening to this amazing album.❤️💗
The Kinks put out this record after the best selling Lola vs Powerman, and it died on the charts in 1971 It was out of print for 30yrs, that's why nobody knows of it. It's a great record but it seems like the Kinks didn't care about sales back then. Good for them. this is this best thing that came out in 1971 and we are all the better for it
@MrCaptrips just remember the three day hangovers!! ha ha ha. Best thing I ever did was stop drinking. Abstinence isn't for everyone, but after twenty years of trouble with the bottle enough was enough. Still miss the goodtimes, don't miss waking up in a police cell with the devil beating on my head...Thanks for your post, keep up the good work, I know it get's tough at times, but it's worth it. Ray nailed it in this song...cheers, A
Listening to some Kinks now... one thing I never realized was the way they understood and alluded to other musicians. This song, which references at both Salvation Army bands and New Orleans jazz... greatly underrated Loony Balloon, which throw in shanties, Floyd, Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and more... they're amazing. Totally agree...
Same, they stayed humble & true to their British roots.
Maybe Death of a Clown would be more suitable for my funeral!

Did you get your chip?

This song always comes into my head when I drunkenly shuffle to the store to get my last beers of the night

The melody in chorus is just... Damn.
It's amazing how beautiful and yet devastating a thing can be, right?
Gets me deep
The Kinks are the fucking best.
They truly are and should be hailed as such...Beatles were ok but with all that technology that money bought who wouldn't be...Kinks are real
Steady
Well said✌️ edit: just realised you comment was 6 years ago. Yer still right, though.

Ray Davies is an amazing singer/songwriter and he tells amazing stories. He doesn't get the recognizition he deserves :)
Love The kinks, love the beatles, love The who, Love the Stones, why have one when you can have 4 amazing groups ?

I get it. The KINKS lyrics were so good! Listen to Led Zeppelins lyrics now. Nonsensical gibberish.
Michael Hooky Led Zeppelin is good too.
Wtf are you talking about Led Zeppelin has great lyrics you schmuck
leppelin lyrics kinda do suck 75% of songs...
thanks love

My god, these guys are not only better than the Beatles in my opinion, but they talk about stuff that actually matters! Straight truth! Such spiritual songwriting, really hits you in the soul.

Well, love also matters.

Kinks are in a class by themselves. Such great storytellers. Many, many great songs.
i think the Beatles are much much better but i love The Kinks too.

Saw them more than a few times myself years back. Good studio stuff and freakin' boss seen live.
Sad, but wonderful song..
+Vladimir Sánchez my thoughts exactly
Is Ray a genius? you betcha
but he's so much, much more than just a genius ...
A vastly underrated song.
we understand underrated is terribly underused but don't be an undereducated underclass- don't feel under-appreciated. you are where you fit in the underworld
Unglaublich gut. Wenn man den Song hört, fühlt man sich betrunken....
In a class all by themselves, tongue in cheek, wonderful view of the people walking by pretending to be something their not. The KInks pegged em all!

@@sarahengel6531 It's Ok, I don't like them either, also, they killed Brian Jones.
The Kinks doing a Tango, amazing!!!
I sing this song all the time at nights out but it doesn't go down too well in Dumbarton, a town dominated by the whisky industry and populated by alcoholics. Never mind, I can only sing the truth....
So sad,so beautiful... And so true.
What a beautiful song! Just perfect!!! I could not describe drunkenness in a better way!
Nursing a hangover before work with this song
Muswell Hillbillies has easily become my fav Kinks album.
It's their best album!

Agreed, Village Green and Arthur are my two favorites but Muswell Hillbillies is right behind!
You have impeccable taste.
Saw the Kinks in our local dance hall 1964 and loved them ever since,,
You know what my favorite part of this song is? The horn section, especially the TUBA!
Wow, I feel so out of it. 50 years old and the first time I've heard this wonderful tune.

The lyrics to Well Respected Man!! ❤ And,I do love Dedicated Follower of Fashion. :)

I remember seeing the Kinks perform this live BITD. Truly a masterpiece.
I see there are 96 sad people (03/07/2018) who don't recognise good music when they hear it.
Exceptional. I absolutely love this song. The way it was collaborated is outstanding.
