They explained for dragons its not a big deal to let others eat a piece of them, since they can regenerate them back, its kind of an intimate gesture. Kobayashi isn't cool with it at all and Tohru just wants to show more love. I see it more as a cultural misunderstanding between the two.
Wayneisboss that is half the journey. Every season has anime targeted toward groups, there are lots of other anime out there that can scratch that itch. The only thing one can do is seek them out. Season by season.
Good news is that GR is very good a trying to be spoiler free. At the very least he tries to warn you if they come up or will post the rating before the review if a proper review will just be spoilerific.
1:43- I'd like to take a moment to express my gratitude to Mr. Takemoto, as sadly he was one of the 35 who died due to the Kyoto Animation arson attack in July 2019. Dragon Maid is and will remain one of my favorite shows of all time, and while a second season is planned for release (although the release date is up in the air, especially after aforementioned fire), it saddens me that Takemoto nor the other 34 will ever see it. Rest in peace.
Also, I would like to mention that not only the comedy is subtle, but many action of these characters are pretty deep, the reasons for these make you feel the character. That is why I personally loved Kobayashi's....
Misi Balint that's KyoAni's style in general where their storytelling is given extra small touches through character animation. I think to explain it better you should check out the video about Kyoto Animation by Under the Scope he can explain it much better than I can.
Remember the episode where Tohru and Kobayashi compete who is better at house-holding? Well you can argue that for Kobayashi the competition was just a stupid, but time killer, but for Tohru the race was challenging his reason of existence, because if Kobayashi was better at hous-holding than her, She wouldn't need Tohru in her life, Period. And since Tohru gave everything she had in this, Kobayashi respected her effort and she followed Tohru's example. WEEELLL you see, these moments made the anime so enjoyable for me... Does these moments fit that description?
Misi Balint that's a good example of what I'm talking about. There's also scenes like how Kanna grabbed the keychain and decided to put it back because she saw how much money was being spent all without a single word being spoken on her end or how she willfully accepted that Kobayashi might not make it for the sports festival but showing by her body language that she was still upset that her mother figure couldn't come. It's scenes like these are why I love Kyoto Animation because they are the masters of making things that seem mundane tell us things without needing to say it.
Baka Yatsu Yup, though his current style has me worried a bit. Not that I have anything against, but not hearing about certain things is a little unfortunate. Like, I don't see him talking about sound in this video, which I woulda liked to hear what he thought of it. Maybe I too attached with the past format, but other than that hopefully he still keeps up the reviews, however he does it
Yea I agree. He didn't include as many details like voice acting and music. He also didn't have the two titles of the alternate anime recommendations in little boxes like he used to. Things feel a little incomplete without them. Also yea, I've said multiple times in comments how he doesn't seem to be doing full series reviews as much and is doing a lot of first reactions and I like his full series reviews the best.
I bow my head for our new lord and ruler Fafnir, but I would stay away from his treasure(In the Norse mythology, Fafnir is the ultimate symbol of greed and owns the most cursed treasure in Norse myth)

Her right eye is a Mayan calendar, that's just such a neat little detail to stick on there, as if to say "even the fanservice characters here have depth to them."
im ordinarily not into slice of life anime but i found this one and watched it and i now love it sooooo much, cannot wait for s2 in july! kanna is so precious.
Thanks for the review. Quality-wise the series doesn't seem like something I would enjoy. But the performance of the youtuber is so confident and convincing, he'd probably be able to sell ice cubes to Eskimos. It's this contagious enthusiasm, which I've rarely seen in other youtubers.
I don't gave the video a dislike to clarify it but you can also reverse the question: How can you like the video before watching the whole video ? Never understood this mindset. I also have conent creators I usually like but I usually watch their videos first before ever thinking of giving them a like or not.
well if you look at it this way.. it is liked because he finally uploaded again. It is hated because he finally uploaded again. People will like/dislike for randomish reasons.
Does anyone else agree with me that the play that tohru and company put on their own version of the little match girl was amazing Also where Kanna builds a chimney in her room to invite santa
It´s a heartwarming feel-good anime. And i can only recommend it. Elma is my personal favorite. Watching the Dragons and humans interacting and finding their place is wonderful.
I've taken a break from anime the past few months, but this video has reignited my interest! Appreciate it, Arkada, it's always nice to find excitement in something!
The show is very touching. I just wish it was stated clearly whether or not Kobayashi and Tohru become lovers. It really feels like they are with that ending in the anime. Haven't read the manga so I don't know if it's full blown shoujo-ai there or not. Any word from Coolkyoushinja?
Chef Larom buuuuut in the trailer for s2 they actually kissed because "warning spoilers" it was valentines day and tohru has a love potion later on she put some in kobayashi's drink which making her love tohru in a lover way common sense that's all
There is no trailer for season 2. The series just ended 4-5 weeks ago.. The only "Love potion (chocolates)" was in the manga during chapter 10, but it didn't even work. Just read the manga and it's not even partially as good as the anime. The anime has actual depth and subtlety to their relationship and the family unit. I can't believe KyotoAni took that manga and made an extremely good anime out of it.
In all seriousness, is anyone else genuinely perplexed by how adorable Kanna is? It's like they merged qualities from completely different animals to make her as cute as possible! She is truly a mythical creature!
Ended up watching Non Non Biyori thanks to Arkadas recommendation at the end of this video... and it's now one of my all-time favorite animes - Thanks Arkada, you're the best!!! Also, you should review Non Non Biyori.
I really don't know why, but this one touched me so much. It's simple, warm, fuzzy and really did melt my heart at some points. One of my best picks of the year and you do it justice Arkada, as you always do.
Honestly the most heartwarming and enjoyable show of the previous season imo. I just couldn't help myself waiting for a new episode to come out every week among other shows I watched.
Arcada man....you are awesome bro....Your reviews are so in depth...I love them.....never stop making them......never stop being awesome man....best of luck for growth of your channel...I am sure you gonna reach million subscriber milestone
God I miss this show, I looked forward to it every single week! It was such a nice break from everything, so adorable, funny, pretty to look at, and amazing characters! The character development was actually amazing. The season finale literally had me in tears.
The scoring, though a tad repeadetive, is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. I can find it something I'd love to listen too on long car rides or just searching the web.
Just finished season 1 and watched up to season episode 4. All in all, I love it. It quickly became one of my fave anime. It’s so homey. Kanna is cute but Tohru is best girl!
This show had an amazing tendency to subtly tackle grown-up subject matter such as moving for the sake of a growing household, learning to live with roommates, and even how hard being a single parent can be (think last episode with Kobayashi having to look after Kanna by herself). Dragon Maid is a lot more mature than it lets on at first.
Using Kobayashi as a palette cleanser is exactly what I did while watching Saga of Tanya the Evil. It was the perfect contrast and I highly recommend watching them together.
I feel like this anime suffered a little bit due to all the comedy anime that came out in winter 2017. Konosuba S2 and Demi-Chan Wa Katari I felt were both better than Dragon Maid. Don't get me wrong, I still loved the anime, but it came out at the worst time.
I wouldn't put demi-chan up that high, it was an interesting concept but just kept going back on cliche jokes and the teacher got WAY to close to his students than he ever should, emotional support is one thing, harem anime tropes with a teacher is wrong. Dragon Maid and Konosuba S2 are nearly on par with each other. Both had me laughing my ass off, Dragon Maid had more in the way of feels than comedy, personally Konosuba was the best of the season for me but that's just because it was Konosuba.
Me, too. Demi-Chan, Konosuba S2 and Gintama S4 were my top favorite of winter 2017. I think people gave Kobayashi way too much credit when it appeals to lolicon & yuri fans and the jokes are pretty cringy.
demi wasnt bad, dub was kinda bad, not the voice acting but it really did show how crap the scripting was. and yeah as i was watching it i had this really uncomfortable feeling that this show should be "law suit: the anime" but at the same time i think its relatively realistic, its not uncommon for girls or guys to have crushes on the hot teacher. i hated dragon maid konosuba was ok, but i agree with most other people, it wasnt as good as s1
No, Demi-chan isn't even a harem anime. The anime is very self-aware that it could potentially be seen as a typical harem anime, so the main MC being a teacher who is smart, buff, and responsible to his duty as an educator is a great spin that differentiate it from other generic anime. Like, when was the last time we had an adult as a protagonist in a high school anime setting? The anime even address the fact that sometimes student might have romantic interest with teacher, which sometimes happen in real life as well, and the teacher is showed to be clearly against it and kept distant between him and his students but at the same time educate them properly. Beside, it's pretty clear the story is pushing Takahasi and Sato as the main romantic leads, and it rather felt genuine than the cliché tsundere girl and the dense MC. Overall, Demi-chan is a smarter anime than Kobayashi, but whatever, people just want to lewd over the Dragon Loli, I guess.
Are you talking about the English dub being bad or the Japanese dub being bad? I find the Japanese dub to be completely fine, though. As for the Demi-chan anime overall, people tend to overlook it because they thought it was just another typical harem anime but with inappropriate teacher-student relationship like Kidomo no Jikan, which is a problem that the anime addressed itself by showing how Takahashi handled the situation with Maki, and he never once showed any perverted tendency toward his co-worker Sato or his students. It's a really smart anime that's also relevant to the ongoing problems in high school as well. I heard a season 2 is coming this October, but I could be wrong. I actually enjoyed Konosuba S2 just as much as S1, if not more with the story actually progressed to a different location and the last episode just totally nailed how epic Konosuba can be, kind of like Gintama that balance the comedy and action dram perfectly.
Please focus less on sound effects. Get a bit distracting after a while. You mentioned fanservice, yet not a single mention of how they treated Kanna which is an honest disappointment for me. I'm personally also bothered by the fact that while there was somewhat nicely paced character development throughout the show, it lacked at the season's conclusion, where it felt like it was celebrating the new status quo it had now developed.
Hey Arkada. Like the slight shifts in the format, but I do have one issue. I liked how before in your older videos how the name of the recommendations would be typed out, so it was easy to add to my watch list since spelling japanese names is not my strong suit. On the other hand, I also liked how you showed clips from the anime you recommended as opposed to a tiny slot on the screen. Maybe flashing the tittle for a couple seconds at the beginning of said anime being showed would work.
It was just so smoothly put together, the animation has no shortcuts, the sound and music are crisply cheerful, the pacing and way that a lot is accomplished in few minutes while feeling leisurely makes it very watchable and satisfying, and the way it mixes in small cute scenes to break things up keeps the cuteness levels balanced and i wound up smiling constantly every aspect or theme of this series is well done, the dragons are -dragons- and the maid theme is played with, there are proper programming tidbits, the subtle and slow transition of Kobayashi turning into a motherly and responsible figure was heartwarming, that subtle growth and warmth from the other dragons was pleasantly sweet, and every character just has this softness to them without being sugary saturated moeblobs. there are no real antagonists, and you sort of like all of them and adore kanna it is adorable perfection
I just finished the series, and I consider it an absolute riot. Especially with how quickly Kobayashi comes top accept the new paradigm in her life (eg How calmly she accepts the situation when Elma first shows up). And Tohru, while she does go overboard on occasion (all in service to Kobayashi, of course), is an absolute sweetheart. And how can you not love the idea of a CHAOS-aligned dragon becoming someone's maid? A profession that, at its heart, is all about keeping things in ORDER. XD Although they never explicitly come out and mention that.
This is probably one of my favorite anime in a long time. It's short and sweet, and has lots of heart to the characters. The last episode had me in tears, both because it was over and it was a really good ending. Highly recommend this to anyone that is a fan of fantasy, slice of life, or just something that makes you feel good.
I loved the show and would love to own it. The combo of cute and funny, with the growth not only of Kobayashi, but also Toru made for fun ride that I looked forward to each week. Btw: keep up the good work! I love your reviews and always look forward to hearing your opinion on the various shows. Thank you for keeping your reviews balanced, while still presenting your own opinion. Keep it up!!!! Note for your video: the music in the last few minutes got quite loud, almost distractingly so.
I watched this anime based solely on your review and was not disappointed. Had me smiling 95% of the time and I loved the parental dynamic that played throughout. And the little bits of romance within it kept me going and had what I like to consider a satisfying affirmation of said romance.
One thing I do quite in the series (read to the of the sentence before judging) is the whole Quetzlcoatl, Lucoa, (fan service dragon) having slept with her own sister because it's a nod to an actual Quetzlcoatl myth from Aztec mythology though some versions it was just a priestess. It also helps that Quetzlcoatl literally translates to feathered serpent which is a pretty dragonish sounding thing.
This anime is literally one of the cutest slice of life animes I've ever seen I highly recommend
Glitch MC you mad bro
Glitch MC
Amaama to Inazuma is like 1000x more adorable, so if you like cute and adorable af shit, watch it.
I watched one episode and quit
Aww
I think one of my favorite parts of this anime was how Tohru was continuously trying to trick Kobayashi into eating a piece of her tail.
I still don't get why that was a thing, lol XD
Kutao Izumi here's the answer in the bluntest of ways
So kobayashi can always have a price of Touro in her
They explained for dragons its not a big deal to let others eat a piece of them, since they can regenerate them back, its kind of an intimate gesture. Kobayashi isn't cool with it at all and Tohru just wants to show more love. I see it more as a cultural misunderstanding between the two.
I thought it was a subtle way of Tohru telling Kobayashi to eat her ass.
Hahahahahahahahaha
Arkada: Unfortunately the show probably won't get a second season.
Me: YOU WATCH YOUR MOUTH!
I hope it gets one I need it
A second season is coming in April
Dr. Kablamo I hope so
all evidence points to a very possible second season
Update. Spinoff confirmed
It's comedy is not over the top, but it's enough to make me smile, to the point that my face hurts.
One of my fav parts is the cook off the smug look of the cherry tomato victory >:P
My roommate and I held this as our saving grace after Konosuba ended. And then this ended and we were sad again
Wayneisboss well there's interviews with monster girls, I got the same type of feel with both of them
Wayneisboss season 2 in September for Kobayashi
Wayneisboss same.......! Love both konosuba and Kobayashi's dragon maid
Wayneisboss damn
Wayneisboss that is half the journey. Every season has anime targeted toward groups, there are lots of other anime out there that can scratch that itch. The only thing one can do is seek them out. Season by season.
When youre halfway through the season and contemplate to watch the reviews with the risk of spoiler but GR is life..
Good news is that GR is very good a trying to be spoiler free. At the very least he tries to warn you if they come up or will post the rating before the review if a proper review will just be spoilerific.
I agree. Quality and eloquent reviews
pffff, I never finish games/anime so I don't have to worry much about that.
Because this show is so spoiler heavy right.
Well..going in to a show knowing nothing will make you expect less..and when they do break expectation.. its gonna be great

Can we please talk about the

Yea I agree. He didn't include as many details like voice acting and music. He also didn't have the two titles of the alternate anime recommendations in little boxes like he used to. Things feel a little incomplete without them. Also yea, I've said multiple times in comments how he doesn't seem to be doing full series reviews as much and is doing a lot of first reactions and I like his full series reviews the best.

Usagi Drop is a family-unit anime that focuses on the parent as much as the child; while it's not so moe, it's definitely a very heartwarming story.
Is it weird that my favorite part of Lucoa's character design was her eyes? That shit's just neat to look at.
Well you arent alone, mixed colored eyes are the thing atleast for me.
Her right eye is a Mayan calendar, that's just such a neat little detail to stick on there, as if to say "even the fanservice characters here have depth to them."
Personally, her eyes and hair color were pretty neat.
Thanks a lot once again for putting the subtitles in English as soon as the video comes out. It helps me a lot understanding your work.

It´s a heartwarming feel-good anime.

Ended up watching Non Non Biyori thanks to Arkadas recommendation at the end of this video... and it's now one of my all-time favorite animes - Thanks Arkada, you're the best!!! Also, you should review Non Non Biyori.
Roses are red, violets are blue, I'm not the first and neither are you. 🌹

i feel that daily life of high school boys is underrated
it's because most of their characters are boys, not cute girls
but the comedy is pure gold
ShySushi i would say nichijou and daily lives are really amazing comedies

So you are saying Ringo and literature girl aren't cute
7:14 "She's so freaking SMOL". That made me smile. I like that.
wow that "extra Thick" meme from Aku was destined to become a meme the second he said it
It's inescapable destiny of Aku's extra THICK comment!
Honestly the most heartwarming and enjoyable show of the previous season imo. I just couldn't help myself waiting for a new episode to come out every week among other shows I watched.
It's well known amongst fans that Elma is the THICC-est, not Lucoa.
Lucoa is top heaviest though.

Yay! I'm glad your reviewing this! This is one of my favorite animes
The description is the same as the last video. I doubt that was intentional.
The EXTRA THICK bit with Akku broke me for a minute. Your editing skills are vastly superior to what they were before.
here watching review again after season 2 just got annouced

This show had an amazing tendency to subtly tackle grown-up subject matter such as moving for the sake of a growing household, learning to live with roommates, and even how hard being a single parent can be (think last episode with Kobayashi having to look after Kanna by herself). WHY DO I HEAR JOTARO AT 5:43?!
Elizabeth Cowan thank god I wasn't the only one! I thought I was going mad.
Yes yes yes
I think people gave Kobayashi way too much credit when it appeals to lolicon & yuri fans and the jokes are pretty cringy.
demi wasnt bad, dub was kinda bad, not the voice acting but it really did show how crap the scripting was.
and yeah as i was watching it i had this really uncomfortable feeling that this show should be "law suit: the anime" but at the same time i think its relatively realistic, its not uncommon for girls or guys to have crushes on the hot teacher.
i hated dragon maid
konosuba was ok, but i agree with most other people, it wasnt as good as s1
5:42 YES! YES! YES! XDD Clever Jojo reference there
Please focus less on sound effects.
Maybe flashing the tittle for a couple seconds at the beginning of said anime being showed would work.
season 2 has been confirmed for april 2018 doe
It was just so smoothly put together, the animation has no shortcuts, the sound and music are crisply cheerful, the pacing and way that a lot is accomplished in few minutes while feeling leisurely makes it very watchable and satisfying, and the way it mixes in small cute scenes to break things up keeps the cuteness levels balanced and i wound up smiling constantly
every aspect or theme of this series is well done, the dragons are -dragons- and the maid theme is played with, there are proper programming tidbits, the subtle and slow transition of Kobayashi turning into a motherly and responsible figure was heartwarming, that subtle growth and warmth from the other dragons was pleasantly sweet, and every character just has this softness to them without being sugary saturated moeblobs. there are no real antagonists, and you sort of like all of them and adore kanna
it is adorable perfection
I am also Moe Trash
I just finished the series, and I consider it an absolute riot. Especially with how quickly Kobayashi comes top accept the new paradigm in her life (eg How calmly she accepts the situation when Elma first shows up). And Tohru, while she does go overboard on occasion (all in service to Kobayashi, of course), is an absolute sweetheart. And how can you not love the idea of a CHAOS-aligned dragon becoming someone's maid? A profession that, at its heart, is all about keeping things in ORDER. XD Although they never explicitly come out and mention that.
Ravioli, ravioli, would you lewd the dragon loli?

noperoni
This is probably one of my favorite anime in a long time. It's short and sweet, and has lots of heart to the characters. The last episode had me in tears, both because it was over and it was a really good ending. Highly recommend this to anyone that is a fan of fantasy, slice of life, or just something that makes you feel good.

Don't lewd the dragon loli...
Let the dragon loli lewd herself.
Thumbs up for informing and promoting LEGAL ways to watch and support anime!
God damn it, Arkada, I wasn't prepared for that sudden Aku.
Man I miss your reviews like these! I mean don't get me wrong the new stuff you do is pretty good as well but I really miss these traditional reviews.
I watched this anime based solely on your review and was not disappointed. Had me smiling 95% of the time and I loved the parental dynamic that played throughout. And the little bits of romance within it kept me going and had what I like to consider a satisfying affirmation of said romance.
7:45 I felt that joke coming but am SO GLAD it was there.
Hey GR, I would definitely love to see a review or at least hear your opinion on the Magi series. It's one of my favorites :)
#protectthedragonloli YAY. been waiting for this for weeks now. So happy you seemed to enjoy it just as much as i did
One thing I do quite in the series (read to the of the sentence before judging) is the whole Quetzlcoatl, Lucoa, (fan service dragon) having slept with her own sister because it's a nod to an actual Quetzlcoatl myth from Aztec mythology though some versions it was just a priestess. It also helps that Quetzlcoatl literally translates to feathered serpent which is a pretty dragonish sounding thing.
Well season 2 is coming out in a couple of months so can’t wait!
