Film Synopsis: Set in 19th century France, Les Miserables tells the story of broken dreams, unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption. The musical is the story of Jean Valjean, Fantine, Cosette, and Inspector Javert told through the power of some of the world's most well known and beloved songs.
The film stars Hugh Jackman as Valjean, Anne Hathaway as Fantine, Russell Crowe as Javert, Amanda Seyfriend as Collette (err Cosette), and Sacha Baron Cohen as "Thenardier". The adaptation is of the musical but it includes more including stuff that is in Victor Hugo's novel of the same name.

I really wish Enjolras and the students would get mentioned in things like this. I'm more interested with their characters and the barricade then the protagonists and the prostitutes
+Jazz Bugg There is a whole different video for the barricade.
Aaron Galloway Is there?!
Jazz Bugg I think so. I remember watching it, it's not a long video but there is one.
I agree, I am playing a student in my schools production, and I think the bond between their characters is very important. It should get more attention!
sameeeeeee
The girl who played young Cosette is absolutely beautiful! And such a sweet and lovely singing voice
She plays sophie in mama Mia too
@@alexklairetaylor9917 she also plays Karen Smith in Mean Girls
Isabelle Allen
@@alexklairetaylor9917 that's older cosette
Samantha Barks isn't given enough credit in this movie, in my opinion she is the best in the movie, yet just because she wasn't famous before hand, she is just taken for granted and no one knows her unbelievable talent
#proudsprout!
she is my idol and I know what you mean... but I think you mis read... what I meant was everyone else in the movie was given so much credit, with Oscars and interviews and posters and things... but sam was one of the bigger roles yet she didn't have any posters or major interviews, purely because she wasn't famous in the movie world before hand. In my opinion tshe should of been recognised a lot more because people are missing out on her amazing talent. :)
:) thanks ahaaa... she is so good and not enough people recognise her because of more well known actors like hugh and anne ... but her time is coming :) #christmascandle :D
Nicole Whinnett I agree with you and also think Aaron Tveit did not get nearly enough credit, his vocals are AMAZING, and not to mention he's extremely attractive ;)
Haha i agree! :D Aaron and Sam should of had so much more than they did! :) Is it just me that ships them? ;) x
Nicole Whinnett i agree with you so much! on my own is the highlight of this movie!!! :D
This movie never gets old for me.
Yani SAMEEEE
Just like most of the characters
Same here
Anne says she can't sing I Dreamed A Dream in a pretty version, but I thought she sang it beautifully.
Vlad Sicoe Because it had devestating emotion and heart in it.
+Piwork69 "Devastating" is right! I have never seen such a powerfully-delivered, emotional song performance in any movie before that I can remember! It seemed SO real; how you might expect a poor woman in her situation to "sing" a soliloquy about the real hell her life had become.
Mywork777 Yes, I understand that. But still, in spite of that, that she had to cry while singing, I think she did an awesome job.
YES!!!!!!
I cannot listen to her version without sobbing. Even without watching her in the scenes you can here it in her voice. It's an incredibly powerful version.
Whilst watching this, I played "How Many Time Can I Find Aaron Tveit In The Shot."
maddilew15 exactly what I did
just got the chance to watch this wonderful movie for the first time on Amazon Prime in 2023. I wish I could’ve watched it much earlier. Great great musical! Anyone else also here in 2023?
Seriously this movie is so beautiful!, I just hate when people start talking crap about it because every actor makes a great job on their role and make the story come to life ♥
Did Tom Hooper get an award for this? Because the amount of detail and intricacy that went into making this film deserves immense amounts of credit. I havent even seen the theatrical production but I think from the looks of this and behind the scenes cuts I've seen of theatrical versions, this is ten times more real and impressive. But I guess for something that is performed in front of a live audience and in a single take can't achieve the power of a film. But then again, some people say the theatrical production feels more 'magical'. I dont know.
I get chills at Anne's "hell I'm living" 😍
i dont see anything at all wrong with Russell Crowe. He fitted Javert perfectly...He had his own sort of style that he brought into the film
Totally agree, he is good for any character
Yeah, people are always saying how is voice isnt good. I think it’s beautiful and fits Javert perfectly
Nooo
@@jaspervanbeers7874 shut up
I mean if you like Javert with the personality of a wooden board than yeah he’s great
The problem with the trailer was that it painted Fauntine as the main character, which she isn't. She dies less than halfway through the first act. Yep...
+HermitVlogs I believe they use the song because it's relevant to the whole film, in different circumstances
well if you read the book...
I know. I haven't cried that much in a movie since seeing Phantom of the Opera. Beautiful beyond words.
I was crying once Hugh Jackman first started singing and I still am crying even though I got home from the theater 4 hours ago
I can't pick a favorite song. Every song speaks to my heart.
omg I've watched this movie so many times and each time every one of the songs gives me chills
I have watched this movie so many times. My favourite musical ever
Same
One of the best Films ever, greate work. Nice to see the Film after i had directed the musical 3 times in Germany.
Bitonic for real?!
When I read the book I cried... When I saw the theatre musical I didn't... When I saw this beautiful version on the big-screen it broke my heart and I cried... Watching this made me cry again from remembering the film! Never in our lives have my friend and I cried so much! Beautiful set, amazing cast, everything brilliantly done! Really want to go see it again!
I was in a professional performance of Les miserables when I was aged 11 until I was 12. I'm 13 now, we performed it in Scotland. Most amazing experience I have ever, and will ever have
LUCKYYYYYY
This movie was SO amazing!!! Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, and Samantha Barks totally blew me away with their performances. Everyone was spectacular!
This is my favourite musical movie of all time.
There's something about the music from les miserables that makes me so emotional. I cried at this, I cry at the soundtrack, I can't help myself! It speaks so much truth, meaning and passion. I love it.
DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING, SINGING THE SONGS OF ANGRY MEN
IT IS THE MUSIC OF THE PEOPLE WHO WILL NOT NE SLAVES AGAIN
WHEN THE BEATING OF YOUR HEART ECHOES THE BEATING OF THE DRUMS
THERE IS A LIFE ABOUT TO START WHEN TOMORROW COMES
WILL YOU JOIN IN A CRUSADE
WHO WILL BE STRONG AND STAND WITH ME
It's kind of sad that Javert (Russel Crowe) is not really talked about in the movie even though in my opinion he did great as being Javert
I think his version is really good, but compared to Philip Quast, there’s no comparison
A tribute to these wonderful, unsung real stars of a magnificent, visual & musical joy.
Made me want to cry! To see the passion that they put in this work of art is just overwhelming! You can see from the whole cast's expressions that they love what they are doing with this film and they want it to be perfect! Extraordinary really; proud to be a fan!
If I have a budget to make a theme park, I would build a Les Misérables place there.
DO IT DO IT, DO IT, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO IT!!!!
YES, DO IT, PLEASE!
yes one of those shooty gun ride things where you have to aim for the national guard soldier and you get a certain amount of points n a barricade rollercoaster lmao
I never was a big fan of Russell Crowe but NOW I am. After watching this movie, I decided to watch all his movies I didn't already see. And I really don't understand those who don't like his voice! His voice is great and his acting...well, no one should question his acting.
im so glad they added the scene of little cosette and jean falling in love
And even with all of their best efforts, it is still incomparable to the stage show!
This film was everything I hoped for and more. It Deserves several Academy Awards
Okay... now Cameron Mackintosh... please do the same thing with Phantom Of The Opera.... i know there's been one, but one where they sing live would be amazing....
I agree. I loved the movie version already, so I wish it was the same cast an everything, just live. That would've made the movie way more dramatic and beautiful. Then the acting and emotion could be emphasized.
+North Bridge You can see the playback in several parts of the movie. I don't think it was live
I've seen Les Mis three times since it's been in theatres and I'm not done yet. It's the most beautifully tragic film I've ever seen.
I've never been so affected by a film in my life. Just perfect, perfect, perfect.
the idea of singing this live and recording at the same time was absolutely brilliant I wish they would do more like this it's hard to describe the passion that these actors and actresses have this was so fantastically done
even though this movie was long, and i chose to go at 9 when i was already exhausted, i still really loved the movie. It made me so emotional, and i would LOVE to watch it again.
I saw this on stage in London, England and was mesmerized. Came back to Canada and sang the music in a stage performance. Of all the music I’ve done, this had the biggest impact on me. Didn’t expect to like the movie, but I loved it!
I started crying from when Fantine died and then kept crying throughout the whole movie. I cried so hard I got a nose bleed :P
SO EMOTIONAL!
I was bawling at the end of this movie. No other movie made me cry at the end like this one...
I will never ever forget the day that I went to go see Les Miserables in the theater, it was one of the most amazing and emotional days in my entire life.
This was one of the best movies I've ever seen, so beautiful
So happy they sung the sings live. So much more raw emotion. Fantastic movie
anne hathaway! you just left a huge gorgeous mark on musicals! Fantine will never will never be the same again! incredible !!
In movies, the acting is more important than the singing, even in musicals. These actors are able to become the characters, to really live out every emotion, and it's okay if it affects their singing, because it's a movie, and the acting is what is most in focus.
I haven't seen the stage version, but this movie has at least introduced me to Les Miserables, which wouldn't have happened otherwise. Now I dream of seeing it live on Broadway one day.
Russell is well trained in singing techniques. He is a passionate actor as can be seen in this performance and also in Master and Commander.
Watching the movie in Norway now. The musical always made me weep; and so does the movie. A very deep, moving show.
one of my favourite musicals!
When i went to see it i nearly cried a few times throughout the movie
such an amazing piece of art
I absolutely love the fact that they paid attention to everyone's teeth because we see so many movies portraying that particular era where the directors seem to have forgotten the fact that no one had pearly white teeth in the 18th century.
A local church near me (a HUGE church) put on a Christmas production. The pastor surprised everybody when he started talking about how he grew to love plays / theater and before we knew it, the lights went dark and the spotlight was on a lady who began singing 'I dreamed a dream'.......It was one of the coolest moments ever.
One person's flatiron building in New York is another person's Diagon Alley, I suppose ...
starlinguk can’t unsee
In all honesty this has to be the most beautiful movie i have ever seen. True perfection.
I first heard this musical back in 1994 and it has been my favourite ever since. I truly cannot wait to see this film!
I'm a straight 15 year old guy. I cried. It was amazing! First time ever I want to see a movie a second time while still in theaters.
the acting was phenomenal, the cinemetography and make up was awesome and the singing was fantastic.
I cried and cried. Then I went back the next day and cried some more. Beautiful beautiful movie....Thank you for staying true the play.
The film takes the story places the stage production just can't go. I've been a Les His fan for 20 years, I've read two translations of Dumas novel, seen the film versions of that...despite all this, I left the theater feeling that I understood the story in an entirely new light. I now have a new depth of appreciation for the songs I've known for years. I was absolutely blown away.
Throughout the whole movie I was shaking and I cries for the whole second half of the movie. It moved me and the movie changed me. I am a different person.
gosh, hughs voice is lovely man
this moving was honestly, the most incredibly moving and touching experience i've ever had the honor to watch. never in my life has a movie made me just step back and realize, "wow, life is just too precious". it blew my mind in every sense of the word & i just can't thank the cast and crew enough for such a stunning movie.
& i think this is the deepest youtube post i've ever made considering i'm thirteen.
Yes
I just got back from seeing the movie, and I have to say it was amazing! I have never cried so hard.
I'm up to 9 times. I never saw the Broadway show so it was all new to me. This movie takes away, it's amazing, it's like nothing I've ever experienced before. The cast is incredible, yes, even Russell Crowe.
Even if you have no idea what Les Mis is about, even if you don't like musicals, just see it. Trust me, words cannot describe how perfect this film is.
From what I've read, it seems many people involved in the film were confused with the timeframe. The battle in the film is the June Rebellion of 1832--16 years before the revolution in 1848. So, this film is really historically about a failed uprising in 1832, and the embers of which ignited a revolution many years later. The idea that the barricade boys fought a failed uprising does make the plot even sadder.
that's awesome that they wrote the song suddenly for hugh jackman to sing to cossette! that scene was so beautiful and it made me so happy:
After watching this i respect the producers more than the actors now....... their efforts to make everything become reality are impressive (especially the creation of the song "Suddenly"). Hope this movie can win Oscar awards because they really took a big step in cinema history.
I think that just described almost everyone who went to watch it. I saw full-grown men tear at the end. It was beautiful.
I didn't cry until the meaning of the final chorus reprise hit me like a ton of bricks. Absolutely brilliant. Javer could have reacted like Jean when forgiveness and mercy were extended to him but he didn't. Sad.
this is the best movie ever, i'm not even exaggerating. no other movie has affected me as much as this one did.
Every second, every actor, every line, every scene, every song of this movie were PERFECT.
I've gone to this twice now, going a third time this week with my little sister (her first time!) Beautiful and transporting.
Un-arguably the best film ever made...perfection.
Watched over a dozen of times. Still get all teary.
Anyone who knows me, knows "speechless" is not my MO .. but after seeing this stunner, I am.
MANY applauses to the cast and director. Thank you for bringing real theater back to film!
It was one of the best films I've ever seen. Remarakable Masterpiece
Amazing Musical Movie! Truly a Masterpiece! All the actors did incredible, but Hugh Jackman was Outstanding!!!
I just can't get over this movie yet..still thinking about it..
Having seen the film, my first comment was; "I can't wait to get the dvd" ! I just want to watch it over & over again. Magnificent.
Anne Hathaway is amazing in this movie as Fantine, her story was one of the most heartbreaking parts of the movie. And as for Hugh Jackman, I've loved his singing voice ever since I heard him sing oh what a beautiful morning in the musical Oklahoma. I remember thinking before they even announced the movie & the casting for it that if they ever made a movie of the musical he should be Valjean, he was born to play that role.
I still get goose bumbs everytime any of them sing. Gah. That's how real this movie feels for me. They were fantastic. I can't wait till I own this film
iloved the movie so much but i cryed alot
holy crap i love russell Crowe's normal voice!
I am a true les mis lover😍😍😍😍😍😘😘😘😘😘😘i love Sam barks and Russell Crowe !!!!!
Jess-specs Ashcroft so refreshing to see someone saying they love Russell Crowe , so do I! I think he did really well it upsets me to see so much negativity towards him.
Videostar2218 I know yr so right !
+H Jess Croft yes finally
I cried just hearing Anne sing that song, so emotinal
This movie takes a great book, turned into a life changing play, to the limits of incarnation. Absolutely, makes you feel like you are by yourself in a theater, and you forget about reality, you forget about your troubles, and you see it all brand new for the first time. This film IS the absolutely mold shattering. You can FEEL the story. It's YOUR story. This is how a musical SHOULD be done. 10 for 10.
I love this masterpiece so much! I wasn't prepared to fall in love with this movie the way I have. I'm afraid of how many times I'm going to see this movie. Brava! Hollywood got it right!
I cried so hard. I loved the movie!!!!!! 100000000000000000000000000/10
Finally the emotion is captured, im tired of seeing endless MT performers smile their way through these songs an this story, an MT performer should be at heart an actor a song is simply a monologue, Anne Hathaway wipes the floor with every MT college performer ive seen, and I work in the industry. Stunning emotion
This movie was amazing and now seeing that they had to sing live makes this movie even more amazing
At 1:44 it looks like Diagon Alley from Harry Potter
That's because it's the same set
Peter Shipway no it’s not
@@malloryfallon6394 it actually is tho
I watched Les Miserables just two weeks ago at a movie theatre. Awesome movie! I like the fact that the actors themselves are singing; they're not just lip syncing to someone else's singing, like it is with most musical movies I've seen.
Amazing Movie! I saw it two weeks ago and i'm so addicted to the Music and to Aaron Tveit.
It seemed so.. Real. And I've watched this before then went and saw the movie for the 3rd time and it still made me feel like it was real. Not just a movie.
My favorite character is Fantine, and im so glad that anne took her place (Y)
Wow. I love how they put it all together.
1. @16.00 "the fragility of a voice which matches with the emotions of what a character is saying". absolutely spot on. 2.Russel Crowe may not have what we think of as a good singing voice, but he does sing well. 3. if it wasn't for politics involved in everything nowadays, would this have won the oscar for best film?.
the movie places such a special place in my heart
I watched the movie twice, I cried twice.. Never cried when I saw it on stage (twice). I love Les Mis, it's one of the best best best musical ever. Thanks for posting this video.
I'm in the middle of being in Les Miserables right now actually :) It is SO MUCH FUN!
what part are you playing?
Mallory Fallon the show was a long time ago haha but I was in the ensemble and my mom played Madame Thenardier! It was a blast!!
First time I saw the trailer I began to tear up and I'm like 'Shit this movie's gonna kill me' and when I finally saw this masterpiece I was balling my eyes out.
Its the most wonderful film .its so real its difficult to put into words just how it leaves you feeling so emotional, the actors are so brilliant. .
