I think the main problem with his video is that he says it’s an ANIME problem but then all his examples are just shonen. Yeah shonen isn’t the best when it comes to female characters, but I’ve seen plenty of good female characters in the anime I’ve seen
And when people refer to shonen, they always talk about the same big anime as if those r the only shonen mangas to exist, completely disregarding the 1000s of shonen manga that don't have fanservice.
Man i disagree Even battle shounen has a amazing female cast Jigokuraku Chainsaw Man Undead Unluck Black Clover Edens Zero One Piece Fullmetal Alchemist Jujutsu Kaizen Fire Force Kaiju No 8 (Mainly next gen battle shounen)
As a female Japanese, I say I'd be offended if a character's written solely for another character's developement. If it's a female or male doesn't matter.
I would be offended if someone says that ''a character was written solely for another character's development" because they weren't, at least I don't look at it that way. They have their own individual presence and moments.
The women in my hero are actually really well written and play an important role in the story. And Ochaco literally has an entire character arc about how she has to put her feelings for Deku aside to focus on her own goals.
She also has her own villain, isn't that enough? And toga is perfectly written character in my opinion Also momo is really good character, that the other guy called uselsess just because she was insecure 😂 Not to talk about mirko... But as the guy of the video said, people like to complain about every detail
@@0doge632 i don't know, it feels like you have to ask permission to watch anime, cause people will always open their damn mouth and say shit things about anime they don't like or haven't watched and still complain about it
But both girls AND boys are well written almost in every shoujo, and boys in shoujo are NOT sexualized and used only for fanservice unlike female characters in shounen. Even if the target audience of shounen are boys, this still does not justify excessive sexualization and poorly written female characters
That MHA portion of the video was godawful, the only 2 women he actually priased are the ones that have barely anything major to do in the story, while he either ignored some great plot relevant female characters or mischaracterized them completely and ignored their accomplishments
I have lost a lot of love over MHA as time goes on because it didn't really go the route I was hoping for but MHA gets trashed entirely way too much. MHA has top tier character moments and emotional impact on the fans. The fact that this original video only picked out a couple of characters to hate on when you have a whole buffet of strong independent and important females in the series. When he says something about the other characters that he defines as "good" females in MHA he is continuing to pick and choose while absolutely shitting on the series.
He even said that there was no reason for her clothes to be like that but im pretty sure that it is explained in the fucking anime that it is because of her quirk so it makes it easier for her to use it or something like that, it's been years since ive seen mha and i still remember this shit so either this guy didnt even watch the anime or he just didnt play attention because he was too busy looking at the booba
@@shun9191 exactly! if he wanted to make a more valid critique he should've gone in the direction of "the author makes an unnecessary scenario so he could have his female character in as revealing outfit as possible" instead of saying "her clothes have no reason to be like that" since they really do in canon
I am not much of a fan of garbage... I mean demon slayer. So I will just flat out say it. May come off as complete hate but its what I really think. Demon slayer characters are the most 1 dimensional boring characters in shonen jump. Just my opinion. I expect 10 year old demon slayer fanboys to come at me but it is what it is.
Anytime I hear this "women in anime are always just objects to be sexualized" argument coming from someone, I immediately know how sexist they are because they'll always completely ignore the fact that the women they're complaining about kick serious ass and are powerful in many, many ways to complain about how much their tits are showing. I'll always find it hilarious how much the west loves the women in JJK because every time they're are brought up, its never about them as individuals and always about how they're fighting the patriarchy. They're only good to the west because they're perceived as feminists and aren't sexy. Like the video says Maki and Nobara are such well written characters because they fight patriarchal standards and are doing it for themselves. Meanwhile, no talk about how every woman in MHA is working towards professional careers in an extremely dangerous and demanding job for various reasons that all have absolutely nothing to do with the fact that they're women. The world of MHA literally doesn't have any of the patriarchal standards he thinks are so amazing that the women tackle in JJK. In MHA, the women have already won equal rights and are treated as equals to their male counter parts but no talk about that cause he wants the socio-political commentary to be there. The women in JJK aren't good because they're well written. They're good because he thinks having socio-political commentary on sexism is what makes female characters good. He's an awfully biased reviewer and an even worse writer cause what he wants, Hollywood already has and it sure is working well for them, isn't it?
Nah it's not about being sexist, you can really really tell when people sexualize women unnecessarily in any type of media. and that's fucked up, people that disagree with the fact that female characters are often sexualized are the same kinda people who are heavily sexist
@@kampurin Not saying over-sexualization doesn’t exist. But when you start with complaining about how sexualized a female character is, I immediately know where you’re coming. Here’s an example. Tamaki from Fire Force is a fun character who’s unfortunately poorly written. She has probably the most unique powers in the show, Nekomata, where she moves and fights like a cat complete with fiery cat ears, tails and claws. But the show never allows her to actually fight, relegating her to over the top comedy involving her “lucky pervert” condition. Whenever she gets in a fight, her lucky pervert trope would kick in, catching her enemy off guard and she’d win without actually fighting. Couple that with the fact that we know next to nothing about her and that she she does basically nothing throughout the show, and we get a character that exists for no real reason. Her absence to the cast of Fire Force would change nothing except losing the pre-teen comedic moments of her losing all her clothes for no reason that get in the way of what would be otherwise serious moments in the show. Now notice how I’ve not mentioned her attire at all because how sexy she is doesn’t matter to her overall character. She’s literally dressed in a bikini the whole time and it shouldn’t matter. The content of her character, what she brings to the table as a character, is what matters. Not how much skin she’s showing. The unfortunate reality for her is that the author has made her the most shameless fan service character ever and she exists for no other reason than that. When a character exists for no reason but eye candy, THAT is over sexualization. Most women in anime aren’t written like that. They’re often sexy, yes. But most of the time, they have a lot more going on than that even if they’re not the main characters and people tend to ignore that just cause they show skin. They aren’t judging the character on who they are but on how they dress as women. That’s sexism. Enjoying the sight of attractive characters in skimpy clothing is universal. Both men and women do it to each other. That’s not sexism, that’s just being human.
Being sexist is imposing the culture on a certain sex, neglecting individual freedom, being prejudiced against those who differ from these cultures, among others. It's okay to sexualize, it's an art form IF done well, but objectifying a man or woman is categorically bad, the point is to know how to analyze when this is being done, as this clearly reflects the author's vision, and others may end up alienated in this (weebs, incels, etc. whoever says so). You talk too much for a simple subject.
@@flur9430 You can't "analyze" when its being done because what is objectification differs wildly depending on what your stance on the subject is. A lot of people think Momo is objectified because of her outfit and a lot of people don't think so because there are in universe reasons for why she has to dress that way. What you think is objectification may not the same as what I think it is which may differ from what someone else thinks it is. You can't say this reflects the author's vision because you can't impose your standards of objectification on the author. Are there objective standards for this? Definitely. Tamaki from Fire Force is an example cause she literally exists as nothing more than eye candy. But even with a character that's just a bit more complex than her like Momo, the standards instantly become subjective.
I am a woman btw, so don't come for me- I love how the only good women are manly women. Every time. If a woman is feminine or insecure or has any flaws, she's not a "real woman". Well, most women in the world ARE feminine (literally idk why it's so hated on, you're a literal woman, so what's wrong with acting like a female? I don't understand) insecure, think about how men (or other women) perceive them, etc. Most irl women wouldn't fight in these fictional worlds or join the army as well (the lack of female characters in Shounen is EXTREMELY well explained with this. First of all - it's an anime for men - and second of all, women are biologically weaker than most men). Not all women are powerful either, it's ok to be wimpy and scared and insecure (any gender), it doesn't make you any less the gender you are. We're humans, not very powerful, perfect aliens. Not all of us are independent, strong, and can fight powerful enemies, and not all of us want to be that. He IS seeing these "characters who aren't here just to be women" as women (if they were men he'd have no issues, or even praise the behavior for not being stereotypical. OR he'd be sexist towards men as well - thinking a weak whimpy man isn't a real man either - like he does with Armin, unless it was a joke), which is hypocritical. Being the kind of feminist this dude is, is just another way of being sexist... *facepalm.*
As a Japanese male “otaku”, I can’t understand why some people always want a single anime to have all diversity. Just watch the anime you like, and don’t complain about others wife.
I don't what he was talking about in Aot. But how in the nine titans did he forgot Sasha? She's a beast, and from season one she didn't stray off her goal of meat and potato.
5:45 the thing is there are plenty of women criticizing shonen writing of women, but the moment these vids become popular, the crowd tells them to "stick to shojo" or something more sexist :^/
If you wanna a see a woman’s take on this there’s inakyu’s video “Why are shonen women trash” Or a better take on this video “How to (NOT) write a female character “ by Nuxanor 12:35
U guys are cool ya know. The problem is the west viewers because they have different perspectives and culture with all this feminism and LGBTs bullshitter.. because of them, they ruin the anime community and the west viewers reputation.
This may be different in Japan, but in the west, mainly the United States, people will always complain and complain. There really is no pleasing any one if a female character is not up to their liking, but I'm not Japanese, know not how you guys feel towards the girls in the show.
The guy's take is honestly not so bad hes just saying that there are alot of girls in anime that are so similar to eachother and most of the time just sexualized which is not a bad thing (most of the time) but it does get more repetitive and boring , now that being said tho there are alot of animes that have done a great job when it comes to girls such as chainsaw man but its getting kinda rare now adays
@@Jinfwjump it would become a bad thing once it affects the main story ,like imo if fanservice was done right and it serves the story in some way it would not be so bad but when it just happens at the most random times then it really pisses you off sometimes
People often forget anime is an entertainment industry, there're masterpieces mixing with some cheap instant noodle type of anime following the popular genre for quick cash grab. And just like everything else, there are alot more trash than diamond.
There are 4 characters in mha that I can think of off the top of my head, all 4 being women, and all having some ability that benefits from them showing as much skin as possible There’s a girl that’s invisible but her clothes aren’t so she’s constantly naked Momo can create shit but it comes out of her skin so she has to reveal as much skin as possible to create larger objects There’s a girl that secretes acid from her skin though that one isn’t as bad And midnight releases a sleeping toxin from her skin Bottom line is all of these girls benefit from being completely naked, but then when you think of the guys, not a single guy in 1A has any skin-based ability that I can think of
Kirishima and the steel guy like him are shirtless if i remember good so yeah idk if it really helps that they are like that or not but i haven't seen people saying anything about it. would their clothes rip if they harden their body?
The biggest problem with Demon Slayer isn’t the women, it’s Zenitsu. That clown should have been left on the side of the road when he was cry-proposing to that random girl. Get his snotty face away from me.
@@natalimoina he’s a throwaway character and his back story is as generic as it gets. The show could be better but they keep clowns like him around and they get rid of the interesting characters. Never seen a better example of a show getting carried by its animation like Demon Slayer.
@@tpost117 yeah, this is OBJECTIVELY wrong. he's literally one of the main characters, and his back story is incredibly unique, never seen anything like it in any series. No interesting characters are gotten rid of and EVERY single character is interesting as hell. Demon Slayer getting "carried" by animation is just some dumb nonsense haters came up with to justify their jealousy and inferiority complex towards DS. DS is carried by its characters, plot, themes, world, dialogue, etc. Your favourite series will never match up. Cry harder.
Started watching Frieren today and it's one of the rarest shonen anime where the mc is a girl. So far it seems like a good heartwarming show, really needed after watching AOT and JJK.
Balsa, the main character of Seirei no Moribito, is my favorite female character by far. She's strong and has flaws, she's 30 yo (unusual for an anime protagonist), and the most important part, she feels real in every single interaction.
@@AiSayuriChan That would be amazing honestly :) but I think that it's a bit old, unpopular, no news... so we're probably not seeing it here haha. I'm glad to read about someone else liking it tho ^^
this guys standers for woman: -cant be attractive / have revealing clothing. -cant do things out of love for a male character. -has to speak a lot. -basically has to be more important then the protagonist. -cant have common personality traits that real woman have. -has to make hardships that woman go thru real even in anime to make sure people know there struggle (even though there probably using it as an escape from that stuff). -cant like guys. -cant be submissive, because apparently for this guy just being a dom makes them a good written anime character. -no fan service. -cant even just be average, all of them have to stand out more then the males.
The concept of the guy's video makes sense but he really chose the wrong examples for this 😂The females in Demon Slayer are well-written. They don't talk too much because the story isn't focused on them yet. I mean Genya did nothing for the first seasons and was actually annoying but he was a beast in s3. Same goes for the girls. Nezuko had her moment in s3.
@@AniMangHwa_Not really. A lot of manwhas r trash. And a female character being strong willed or whatever doesn't make her a good character. Cos from what I've read, there r more annoying female characters that good ones.
The thing is japan did something amazing which was separate anime or manga and alot of their media into demographics. Its clear at a glance who an anime was made for. This arguments only holds water when you only watch Shonen and never delve into other anime lik Shoujo and seinen.
It is actually even funnier than that, tons of shoujo/josei are just smut targeted towards women and often written by them, and it is very often either a female protagonist being objectified and forcefully dominated by men. or 2 men being objectified and sleeping together. Those are the 2 most popular things women are consuming and somehow nobody complains about that though. It is like people are just pretending 50 shades of grey wasn't the biggest selling novel in the west suddenly? Sexualization and objectification is fine in fiction, people need to realize that. If you make something and try to make it for everyone, it will get boring and stale fast.
Dude is saying that anime has a problem with his women: Proceeds to showcase only shoenen anime. Shonen. As in: Anime for BOYS. Of course they're not gonna highlight or even develop big back stories for the side characters much less the girl characters. So its not anime's problem that he's complaining about. He's complaining about Shonen anime's problem. Go watch some Shojou. Or hell there's a ton of anime out there thats not shonen or shojou but have very compelling female leads. But naw don't bring up a string of anime with male main characters and be shocked that the females are less important to the story or not as well fleshed out.
I don’t like arguments like “that’s the character, that’s the plot” Yea man. Character and plots have to be designed by someone that makes conscious decisions. And people make conscious decisions due belief and lived experience. Not to mention that individual decisions can build up eventually to form patterns.
As a Japanese point of view, this is absolutely nonsense. They talk about things that are not a problem as if they were. They push for diversity, but they deny diversity the most. Just keep watching Lego movies or Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Nowadays, these pebbles are getting worse and we are tired of it.
I find this hilarious because over 70% , FLIPPIN 70% of manga creators are women , so that guy is actively spitting in the face of women and telling them they don't know how to write women 🤣🤣 .
@@Anoc003 it's actually overwhelmingly female . What the women do is they get a male face for the manga so that more people will buy . But yes, even Shonen manga are mostly female made manga . So all these " bad oversexalised " women are made that way by women 🤣 .

yeah, when I was in the Disney animation program in college, the professor that was teaching us was an ex-Disney animation director... and before that, she was an animator worked for about 5 years of it before she burned out - but she still could manage, so she did it for 7 more years. (her name on was on a few Disney animations mid 80's - before little mermaid.) She included her story on the first day because she tell everyone that you will get burned out if you are not careful. I left the program after 1 year... mainly because then Disney will make you goes into a 2 years intern contract after you graduated from college (regardless of your major) But that left me only with character design (which they actually didn't teach you, per say... it was NEVER an art class, but they want you to learn the technique without weed off your own creative style.)
Agree with aot take historia was great up until season 4 after that autgor sudenly forgot about her , she was waaay better than mikasa(ereeh) after the first 8 episodes she had no progres
A lot of people when they're white knighting like this and or writers think that for a female character to be strong funnily enough they often apply masculine traits to them. They want them to be independent, not care about men (to not be an accessory), not where clothing that accents or sexualizes their form. Meanwhile like your gf said an actual good female character is just a well written character who is a woman. One of the best examples of this was Ripley from the Alien franchise. At no point does she act like a guy, she's very motherly there are scenes that show off her body and she's a total badass while doing it. It's the same for Sarah Conner, she's looking for love in all of the parts of the first Terminator before she's running for her life but when the shit hits the fan she steps up and becomes a total badass. People think lesser of female characters becaue they have a love interest they think that makes them NEED the man or whatever and sure that trope has been done... but to say Mikasa is a bad char for having a strong attachment to the boy who saved her from being raped and sold into human trafficking when they were just kids? That's fucking dumb.
Imagine that being a woman and being sexy is a bad character trait, like that's cringe. If you gone talk about women being sexualized you need to talk about how there isn't a single male anime character that's is even slightly overweight's unless it's specifically done so the can make fun of it, or so they can disappear only to reappear a few episodes later as the husbando. They also have an entire 3 episodes in MHA dedicated to explaining why females wear outfits like this in the show, and it's all about how it brings in money from civilians so they can work to save people. I would say the vast majority of female characters in MHA are extremely well written just because you don't like the character doesn't mean it's poorly written. Obviously not every shounen is going to have the best female characters you've ever seen, but to boil things down to such simple terms is also not good writing. Real women want to be sexy, they want to be attractive, that's why they will always rate themselves a 10/10, sure not every woman want's to walk around in a skimpy outfit, but there are plenty of them who do. Just from his examples he showed people who are idols, and wearing uniforms as being sexualized, but there are literally thousands of women who are idols who wear cheerleaders' outfits, Swimsuits, and other forms of fashion that normal people would consider to revealing. Also would just like to point out that in MHA all the outfits are designed around the powers, he literally choose like 2 of the worst examples to showcase but there are plenty of costumes that aren't sexualized hardly at all. Bro literally talks about characters being one dimensional and then says it's multifaceted for a woman to want to not be oppressed, like that's literally so fucking troped out. The reason you don't see women like that in anime, is because the culture is different in japan, it's not about a badly written character, the women are more conservative, the people are more conservative, it is legitimately embarrassing to be seen doing public displays of affection in japan, people are more shy, and men in general do have more confidence than women. You can look up behavioral psychology, it's a proven scientific fact that on average men are more confident, because men have to be more confident as they are the providers they cannot afford to be indecisive, and also men who are not confident are not attractive to females, which is why you don't see them as MCs as much because anime is just as much fan service for women as it its men. Dude is giving massive angry incel vibes.
The notion that female characters are poorly written in anime is so false to an extent. I guess Eighty six 86 doesnt exist. I guess bocchi doesnt exist. I guess demon slayer doesnt exist. I guess Bleach doesnt exist. I guess komu cant communicate doesnt exist. I guess Fate doesnt exist... I guess characters like Miruko, Toga, Mt lady, from mha dont exist. Momo suffers from self confidence but she gets over it over the course of the next few arcs fairly well. As for her outfit, WHO GIVES A SHIT. HAS THIS DUDE NOT SEEN SOME OF THE WESTERN COMICS. Woman have always been sexualized, men have to if you really think about it. A sexy hero is what everyone wants lmao. Men and woman alike Makima doesnt exist. Power doesnt exist. Ymir, pieck, Misaka. I could go on and on about series with great female characters. Also there are TONS of MALE side characters in anime that get done just as dirty and to be forgotten. Yes their is a trope mainly within SHOUNEN anime that women are useless. I say cry about it. Women can be strong, but theu are historically on the sidelines fighting wise. Character wise i dont like it when a character exists soley to Boost the MCs morale or character arc, regardless of wether its a male or female. As for fanservice, nothing wrong with it as LONG AS fanservice isnt the whole damm point of the series. Also mha had more well written female characters than the entirety of Naruto. Mha suffers way less from female character "syndrome" than many other shounen and this dude decided to use mha as an example for his video lmao. I'm ranting at how brain dead the video is TLDR some women do deserve more character development in anime and fanservice is Okay as long as its not the whole point of their character, But this issue is not as big of a deal as youd think.
I do agree that women in anime are not well written a lot of times but I don’t agree with the guy’s examples, especially AOT like... those are literally the BEST female characters you’ll ever see on anime. 😭😭
1:13 What is greater art in perspective of work? Animator must create almost every frame. Actor is just in some situation and camera do almost all. Anime is greater in that than anything xd
my problem with women in anime is the over sexualization of the women making it sometimes uncomfortable to watch i literally cant recommend animes to my female friends because how much sexual stuff is placed right beside the great story and animation like to like the fan service scenes but its happening a bit too much lately
I mean, I don't think there is an issue with pointing out things you see to be an issue in a medium you like and are into. Especially when not done in an excessively negative way by highlighting areas it is done well. I think there is fair criticism of anime like Naruto's female characters, and even in MHA, they gave Ochaka really cool setup in the fight vs Bakugo, but in the later seasons her entire personality kinda has become "in love with Deku" which is disappointing. Nobody is saying this is because of some secret hatred for women (okay maybe some stupid people are saying that) but I think it's nice to highlight good female characters, especially in a genre like Shonen which can be lacking. Granted all of the series are both very popular and have well written females like One Piece, JJK, Chainsaw Man, ect. I think a lot gets missed on a good female character, it isn't just writing a good character and them being female, when we think of Nobara, Maki, Makima, all of these characters are very different, but also being female is a part of their character, it just isn't the whole thing. I'd say similar things go for sexualization, a LOT of anime are very bad about this, Momo from MHA is a prime example, as she has no real reason to be sexualized, they just wanted it to sell figurines. Whereas a character like Makima, it's a huge part of her character.
I think when the topic comes to 'sexualized female anime characters are just a bad characters' a LOT of people accepts this as true, without even thinking. Well, for me, an anime woman being sexualized is not a sign of bad writing. I mean, ofc there are cases that this is a major problem, but what im saying this is not the ONLY problem. A poorly-writing anime woman is not just all about sex and stuff. When they have also no motivation or a moral to add their character development, has no real idendity, has no hobbies or anything to say when they intrudice themself; now thats a bad written character. Seems a lot people are just thinking the sexual part of the problem, and not thinking about the others. İm gonna give you guys an example: Rias from Highschool DxD. For me, shes a wonderfully writting woman. And yes, she's sexualized a lot but thats not making her a bad character at all. She has the kind heart of a leader, has a motivation to go. Also a healty relationship with other characters, She cares about her team, shes kind, smart and psychologically/physically strong! Now thats a definiton of a good written anime female. Shes sexualized, but thats not making her a bad-written at all. What im saying shortly: The physical issuses are just a part of the problem, and people need to except that. Not everything is about sex/causing by sex.
If you want great strong female leads I would recommend kill la kill but the show concept itself is basically fan service but the characters are great.
Tf is dud talking about 10:26. Bro these americans who thinks everything bruh sakura in vote always voted AS first in japan and i mean always like tf...and Also lets not forgot Narutotop99 where she was voted worldwide Third omg people like sakura like this chat always talking about sakura you guys like sakura more than her fans
The guy in the video is right about Nezuko not talking is dumb, "bUt sHe iS A dEmON" yea so what? all other demons in the show do talk, She does't talk because the author didn't want to write lines for her, maybe to just have to work with lines between Tanjiro Inosuke and Zenitsu first, whatever the reason is the final result is that it hurt the character indeed.
no, there's literally a plot reason she doesn't speak and it contributes to her character greatly, showcasing more of her struggles and allowing her character to be written extremely differently and uniquely compared to all the other characters in the series, having most of her character and biggest moments all come from action (not fighting action lol, but "doing things" action) and expression.
If we only talked about Shonen it makes sense why most of them happen to be useless ,for better or for worse ,people still dont understand what shonen actually means as a genre (a story aimed at teen Boys ) so i think it makes sense why the majority of time female characters arent that well written ,i am not saying is a good thing or it should be like this ,but its literally not the aim of the genre (even tho there are a tone of exceptions like he said JJK ,imo Shaman King is a good example) but again if people want to watch good female characters watch seinen or shojo. And for the people who want to see powerful female leads just watch Claimore or Black Lagoon .
I actually kinda agree with him, Unfortunately the situation has become annoying, how female characters are used sexually or literally a bad writing cuz the writer just have no idea how to write a women, like Mikasa, people think she's "a well-writing" but in fact she's one of the worst characters I have ever seen, It's literally only in the first 6 episodes I saw a good flashback and events for her, and after? Literally she doesn't have any important role other than just action without dialogues, without a story, without development, just worshipping eren without any personality of her own, and in the end we know what she did to Eren.. but thank God that the main women in JJK are really well- writing and in anime monster too, and there's some good women character in naruto and demon slayer but in general, half of them or most of them in Anime are fucking bad-writing or sexually for fan service.. Sorry for my English if it has mistakes, I was busy and in a hurry..
Finally, someone who understands how trash Mikasa is. Everyone glazes her so much as if she's so well written when they only like her cos she's a female character who can fight. She has no personality and she just follows Eren everywhere.

It's all about perspective, really. I think people in the west who have consumed a lot of Hollywood stuff are used to movies and shows that cater to a wide audience-be it men, women, young, old. Sure, there are some niche-specific ones that cater to a smaller group of audience, but the majority of movies and shows in Hollywood are made to cater to a wide audience. Anime, on the other hand, has many different demographics: shonen, shojo, seinen, josei, kodomo, etc. They are divided by gender and age. That means if you watch a shonen anime, it's obvious the show is written from the perspective of young men toward young men. So of course, the female characters exist to service the experience of the young male protagonist, because that's where the focus of the story lies. It's not only with shonen, either. Try watching some shojo-which is mostly romance-you'll see the exact same thing where the male characters exist to look sexy as hell to serve the fantasy of the young female protagonist, and in turn the young female audience as well. Same goes for seinen and josei; as these audiences are older and more mature, so too do the shows in their respective genres reflect their views of the world and the opposite sex.
All individuals should acknowledge and appreciate the diversity of opinions, recognizing that not everyone shares the same perspective. If people could cultivate a mindset of understanding and respect for differing opinions, our global community would undoubtedly thrive as a more harmonious and peaceful place.
btw you can tell from the dudes voice hes probably gay so thats why he has a problem with sexy female characters. i bet hed have no problem if the male character were sexualized and there are male characters that are sexualized in anime as well but everyone ignores that.
There was no good anime where the female is the MC that isn't romance and has a good story. ->also the reason why frieren is so popular. I would rephrase what he said as "99.9% of the time, they exist just to complement the MC."
Interesting how this guy wants to talk about "anime's biggest problem" and doesn't include shojo anime? Like, yeah, it's a no brainer most women in shonen anime are badly written. It's a genre written for boys and therefore the main people are usually men/boys. Shojo anime on the other hand are written with girls/women as the main target group. Saying there's no character development there and that the women there are all awful and weak is interesting coming from someone who doesn't even seem to watch anything shojo. Or maybe try to watch more "balanced" shows that aren't all about fighting or all about love but a little bit of everything? You'll get more fleshed out characters naturally because there's more space for character development. It's actually the same in all forms of media, like non-animated movies or even books. I mean, let's just have a quick look at the (early) MCU and their female characters? xD Not saying there aren't any issues with women in anime at all. It's well-known Kishimoto didn't do the female characters in Naruto justice and focused on their full potential or that women in One Piece are overly sexualized. But saying it's the biggest problem in anime in general based on shonen anime only? That's a bad argumentative base. As someone mentioned in the comment section, there's a great shonen anime with a female lead called "Guardian of the Spirit". Just as an example of shonen anime with a woman as the main character. I'd be really interested in Nick's reaction to this anime! Especially since it seems to be so underrated and niche, it'd be nice to give it some spotlight :)
What bothers me most about this discussion is how people don't try to understand the "issue" before really putting it out there. "Objectified" women are a shonen problem and people that bring it up just seem to think all anime and manga are shonen while this is just not true. It is just the most mainstream demographic genre but not the biggest in numbers, not by a long shot. Sexual themes in fiction are always popular no matter the demographic, but one could argue that boys between the age of 14-18 are the horniest mfs on earth, which is precisely the shonen demographic. If you look deeper into it, from an author's perspective, if you could sell non-explicit sexual content that compulsive consumers (such as teenagers) can buy... It's just an easy deal. I don't think things like fanservice or poorly written female characters are made out of ill will towards women (for the most part). It's just that the demographic it is targeted to is a bunch of horndogs that only want to watch a cool dude doing cool things and some hot chicks. AND THAT'S OK. In my opinion, there's nothing particularly wrong about teenagers being horny. People just need to understand that they're simply not the targeted audience just like some guys may dislike romance movies for having such dumb male characters that thirst over the female lead. It's just a demographic thing. Plus, to this day there's still no real study that demonstrates any form of correlation between consumed fictional content and real life issues. No, that 15 y/o boy watching anime boobs is not going to become a sex offender when he grows up, just like you're not gonna become a school sh*oter just because you play gta. It still baffles me how there's people that genuinely believe banning "problematic" things in fictional content will solve anything. Even if fanservice and poorly written female characters where to magically banish from the anime/manga industry, it won't solve any sexism issues present in the world or even Japan. In fact, I don't think it would have any impact whatsoever. It is also funny to me how people make it out to be "the biggest problem in anime" when the fact remains that the manga industry is still a female dominated industry both in production and consumption (don't quote on this one cause I'm not actually sure), since most mangaka are women and the largest produced manga demographic is shoujo (again, don't quote me on this one). In sheer volume alone, "women" is not the biggest issue in anime (It may not even be an issue at all from what I stated earlier). Last but not least, it also bothers me how "poorly written female characters" are suddenly a sexism issue. Bro, it's a writing issue. You could argue that all "objectified" women are poorly written (which is not always the case), but you can't tell me with a straight face that all poorly written women are "objectified". It's just not true. In fact, I'd say that most actually poorly written female characters that are not that sexualized are just poorly written because the author just didn't developed that character right and it just happened to be a woman. Anyway, that's all I had to say.
People who think boys watching sexualised female characters might become offenders r some of the most retarded people on the planet. It's sad that anyone would even think like that.
"This is what makes Jujutsu Kaisen women more memorable" Wait till he sees the latter parts of the series with the only exception of a certain Zenin clan member lmao.

Whoever did this video hasn't watched a lot of anime. I can think of several series with strong, well-written female characters: Darker Than Black; Black Lagoon; Psycho Pass. He needs to watch more than Jump shows 🙄
You can roll your eyes all you want, but the guy has a solid point. I'm not from America or Europe, so this is not a "westerner" pov (although Africa is west to Asia :p ).. You may say "well, that's the point of the character/plot" once or twice.. And it's fine. But when you see a pattern that most female lead characters are either fan service or male lead service or no service at all.. Then you gotta ask "why does it happen to be the female lead?".. I mean, I don't hate Mikasa, but she's definitely not my favorite female character in AoT.. Well, she is but she's not, because she had all the potential to be the best character in AoT, but it was all thrown out the window! I'm not saying there are no great female characters in anime, and I'm not saying there shouldn't be fan service or characters that only serve the main character.. But there should be some balance, if most women in anime have a specific trait about them, it's gotta annoy me as a woman first, then as a viewer who doesn't like shallow characters and repetitive plots.
@@aidanwhite3769 what was Mikasa from season 1 episode 6 to -basically- the last episode of aot? A strong soldier who shows up when Eren is in trouble and saves him? Personally I think anime has some problems with their representation of women. I think that the problem has gotten less frequent with the passage of time as writers learn how to write female characters better and become more sympathetic to women in general (though the problem does still exist). I also think that this guy made a really terrible case for that argument.

And how is every other charachter having their tits swinging on the screen needed for the show
Nah it's not about being sexist, you can really really tell when people sexualize women unnecessarily in any type of media. and that's fucked up, people that disagree with the fact that female characters are often sexualized are the same kinda people who are heavily sexist
I am a woman btw, so don't come for me-
I love how the only good women are manly women.
*facepalm.*

As a Japanese point of view, this is absolutely nonsense. They talk about things that are not a problem as if they were. They push for diversity, but they deny diversity the most. Just keep watching Lego movies or Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Nowadays, these pebbles are getting worse and we are tired of it.

yeah, when I was in the Disney animation program in college, the professor that was teaching us was an ex-Disney animation director... and before that, she was an animator worked for about 5 years of it before she burned out - but she still could manage, so she did it for 7 more years. (her name on was on a few Disney animations mid 80's - before little mermaid.)
She included her story on the first day because she tell everyone that you will get burned out if you are not careful.
I never realized Nicholas had this much Japanese viewers in the comments. That's how you know my boy is making it out to the Japanese audience

That's fucking dumb.
have fun for your vacation nick!
Men and woman alike
Makima doesnt exist.
I'm ranting at how brain dead the video is
TLDR some women do deserve more character development in anime and fanservice is Okay as long as its not the whole point of their character, But this issue is not as big of a deal as youd think.
I do agree that women in anime are not well written a lot of times but I don’t agree with the guy’s examples, especially AOT like... those are literally the BEST female characters you’ll ever see on anime. 😭😭
Bro is like the person who will complain about Anya as a bad female character 😂😂
İm gonna give you guys an example:
Rias from Highschool DxD.
What im saying shortly:
The physical issuses are just a part of the problem, and people need to except that. Not everything is about sex/causing by sex.
If you want great strong female leads I would recommend kill la kill but the show concept itself is basically fan service but the characters are great.
That video didn't make sense even a little 💀
3:34 Orihime is her first name Inoue is her last name
The title of the video should have been different like, Shouen's Biggest Problem Women, Because these problems (most of them) are shounen specific.

@@anonisnoone6125 guy says mikasa is trash written 🤣 and jjk girls r better written 🤣 bro go and research how to develop a character means, u guys have no knowledge about writing that u dont even know what is good and what is trash before blabbing nonsense go and educate yourself

@@rownakbhadra3725 tell me, What is the development of Mikasa? I mean there's development, in S4 she stopped saying "Eren" in some episodes, lol..

..Also after s1 she stopped always babysitting Eren..In s4 she took an another huge step by going against Eren instead of living in a denial and killed him in the end for greater good..And she played a strong, motivational role in Eren and Armin's character arcs thorough out the first three seasons..This is a good character development..Idk what y all smoking
Cringe
Yeah but opinions this stupid don't deserve to be acknowledged and appreciated or recognized and no respect should be given.

btw you can tell from the dudes voice hes probably gay so thats why he has a problem with sexy female characters. i bet hed have no problem if the male character were sexualized and there are male characters that are sexualized in anime as well but everyone ignores that.

Bro had enough 💀
Is jjk only that guy can give good example? Jjk girls r written well at beginning and right now they're dead/disappear lol
@anonisnoone6125 lol I think your reply got shadow banned, but yeah I agree. It's just a dumb assumption
there are so many male characters with the same problems he mentioned so his arguments seem to be invalid

Bro pulled the spy family card 😂
How was Mikasa's potential thrown out the window?
@@aidanwhite3769 what was Mikasa from season 1 episode 6 to -basically- the last episode of aot? A strong soldier who shows up when Eren is in trouble and saves him? Okay she's super powerful so that makes sense, but she's also the last descendant of some clan leader or whatever, and she has a solid, tragic backstory.. What did the writer do with all this potential? Aside from following Eren around, what did she do?

Personally I think anime has some problems with their representation of women. I think that the problem has gotten less frequent with the passage of time as writers learn how to write female characters better and become more sympathetic to women in general (though the problem does still exist).
I also think that this guy made a really terrible case for that argument.
Genre exist. And female leads have its own genres whats more interesting majority of woman love to write men beating other men aka. Action
