  • I've got a single malt scotch whisky from the Tamdhu distillery in Speyside today. This is their famous 15 year old. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

    I broke out a dram in honor of the re-review. Was surprised how little was left in the bottle - much like your own - a sure sign that I've enjoyed this one a lot but these days the price is closer to €105/$117 USD in my market (Poland) [up from $105 when I bought my current bottle in around 2022] which puts it at the very edge of 'worth it' .The 'hot' peppery spice gives it a _bit_ of an edge and that burnt Christmas Pudding note. Tamdhu 12 on the wishlist now.

    Tamdhu was the whisky that got me into whisky full stop so the 12 and 15 have a special place in my heart - right up until you mentioned it: -
    “This is an alternative to Macallan…”
    Personally I think this has gone to both Tamdhu’s and Ian MacLeod’s heads (distillery and parent company respectively)
    Tamdhu 15 was already expensive enough at £75 RRP a couple of years ago and now the RRP sits at £110 (£35 or approx 30% ish increase!) granted the clever thing to do is never to buy direct from the distillery and get the bottles instead from retailers but at some point the prices will creep up to that RRP and this will become prohibitively expensive (for a 15YO!!!)
    I have an unopened bottle of 15YO at home however regardless of how classic it is, when you start trying to get into Macallan pricing you’re priorities are totally incorrect and the Tamdhu brand is giving me red flags about its long term business plan: -
    1) constant comparison to Macallan by whisky reviewers
    2) releasing an 18YO to market then hiking the prices from £140 to £185 after 6-9 months of release
    3) very large marketing of their current expensive old 43YO and 46YO compared to other releases they’ve done
    4) focusing on hyper premiumization of the brand, similar to Glengoyne - nice stuff but not worth the prices they are asking for
    Too pricey for what it is and I’m going to have to turn my back on Tamdhu as I’m clearly not a target customer for them - feels like the distillery is looking for someone with £1 million plus in their bank account to purchase a special old cask or something

    • @dextercool
      @dextercool 3 дня назад +3

      @@PaulGiannandrea it went from £80 when I purchased my current bottle to now £90 at the lowest but some sites here in Poland have it for more like £100. I’d still buy at 90 but not too often and make that bottle last two years.

    • @PaulGiannandrea
      @PaulGiannandrea 2 дня назад +4

      @@dextercool don’t get me wrong, a price increase is never expected or wanted however I would have to say your increase their in Poland is at least gradual - ours here in the UK was all of a sudden
      It still annoys me that scotch whisky from some distilleries is more expensive to buy here in Scotland where it’s made!!
      Makes me slightly ashamed to be Scottish sometimes 😔

    The Tamdhu 12 and 15 are $70 and $130, respectively, in my area (Chicago metro). Macallan 12 and 15 are $100 and $170, which is nuts!

    I’ve read all comments and I’ve seen various complaints about the price of this one , but I think I can top every one of those prices: in Oregon (price controlled market) it sells for $160.95!! The 12 is $83.95 and the cask strength is $127.95 ! I’d say the Tamdhu is no longer a cheaper alternative to Macallan, it’s just an alternative. I’ve only tried the batch strength at a bar and I loved it. I still have a bottle of the 12 and one of the 15 , both unopened, on my shelf, but they were bought a while ago, at much better prices.

    Tamdhu 12 is £45 and the 15 is £85 in the UK right now. I prefer the value for money on the 12 but the 15 is great whisky. If the 12 was £50 and 46% it would be a no brainer but it is what it is. Cheers dude, great review as always!

    It’s $150 around here (New England) even in a price-controlled state. If it were $80, it would probably be my go-to scotch, but as it is, Glendronach 15 is my staple non-peated bottle ($109). One of these days, I’ll give the Tamdhu 15 a try. It sounds like the only potential for disappointment would be the value.

    Terrific review Geoff! Who the heck isn’t terrified of cockroaches?!! 🪳 They also fly in Hawaii and years ago in Kauai, on a family trip, with my hubs and 3 kiddos, we exchanged houses and initially we thought the gorgeous home in Princeville, on the North side of the Island, was fabulous. No!!! It was infested with huge flying tropical cockroaches and within a few days we checked out and went to Maui to a gorgeous hotel and thankfully hotels fumigate Regis no roaches. We were so stressed. Understatement! Love hearing your thoughts!! Cheers!!🍻

    I loved this 15 yr old. Mainly because it scratched the Glendronach itch I had. I do own a few of the old Billy Walker 15s and a couple 18s. But truthfully I’m not touching those for a while. So this is in the neighborhood of that flavor profile. I think it’s better than Edradour , Glengoyne ,and Aberlour of similar age or thereabouts. I’m really curious about the 18 yr old. It’s expensive though. Just over over the $200 mark.

    Sadly here Tamdhu 15 is pricier (115€ at least os 127usd). for less than that price I could go for Kilkerran 16, Bunnahabhain 12 CS or Craigelachie 17 which give me a bit more of that 'edge' of something special.

    Definitely my favorite sherry whisky, but due to the pricing i rarely buy it. At 46% NCF, I've found Glenfarclas 15 and Edradour Caledonia 12 to be good alternatives, although they are more rugged and an entirely different experience. I like the dynamic of that rotation, so that when i pour a dram of Tamdhu, it feels special.

For some reason, I always find some other whisky to spend my money on, whisky that makes me more curious, I'm convinced that I will like both of the, so...sometime they will show up on my shelf, atleast the 12 yo...imho, I think the 15yo is a bit expensive. Just don’t understand why we don’t all buy cheaper whisky then boost it with a few drops of sherry or Madeira or port. I blend 50/50 Prohibition with a Johnnie Walker 12 Islay edition and create various flavour profiles by adding a few drops of Madeira or olorosso or port. It is a great way to experiment and gets great results. Try it Geoffrey and tell us what you think.

    It’s too expensive in my market ($130-135 pre-tax). I liked the 12 & the batch strength is good & still just barely sub $100. I’d probably push folks in my market towards Glenturret 12 (@$85-90) for a naturally presented sherry cask dram.

      I find the Tamdhu 15 has been available for the past 2 years at $135 at a couple of random stores.
      If the glenallachie 15 is under 100 and the 12 is not 43% I am not pulling the trigger. I got a CS batch 4 and that's a young A'bunadh killer.
      Sherry is just sherry so as my supply drops I would be on the lookout for an edradour or glen turret over this expensive macallan alternative every time.

Not an alternative. It is like comparing apples and pears or Ardbeg and Lagavulin or Spaghetti and Linguine. It is all atoms and molecules. So... why?
