Grand emotions on an intimate scale, from the winner of the Wigmore Hall Quartet Competition
Born in South Korea and now based in Germany, the four award-winning young musicians of the Esmé Quartet have won praise wherever they have played-including at major international festivals such as Lucerne and Aix-en-Provence, and in prestigious chamber music venues such as London’s Wigmore Hall, where they won First Prize at the 2018 International String Quartet Competition.
In its debut Hong Kong recital, the Esmé Quartet will explore the European classical quartet tradition, from the elegant 18th-century wit of Haydn to the romance of 19th-century Russia, where Borodin poured his gift for melody into his luscious Second String Quartet. It will then unleash the storm of Schubert’s mighty “Death and the Maiden” quartet, a chamber work on the scale of a symphony. Expect a performance charged with all the “depth and maturity” (𝘚𝘶̈𝘥𝘥𝘦𝘶𝘵𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘦 𝘡𝘦𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘨) and “unexpected allure” (𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯) that has led critics to praise the Esmé Quartet as one of the finest chamber ensembles of our times.

威格摩爾大賽首獎四重奏　首度來港呈獻弦樂經典
伊斯美弦樂四重奏由四位活躍於德國的韓國音樂家所組成，自2018年於倫敦威格摩爾音樂廳國際弦樂四重奏大賽中奪冠後，隨即登上琉森音樂節與瑞士韋爾比亞音樂節等世界各大舞台，細緻的演出廣受好評，並獲古典弦樂雜誌權威《The Strad》評為擁有「無懈的合奏默契」。本屆藝術節為伊斯美弦樂四重奏首次於香港演出，獻上弦樂四重奏經典曲目，絢麗琴音令人期待！
音樂會以弦樂四重奏之父海頓著名的「玩笑」四重奏揭開序幕，展現了典型的海頓式幽默--突然中斷的旋律讓人猜不透樂曲究竟何時結束。同場呈演鮑羅丁獻給妻子作為周年紀念禮物的第二弦樂四重奏，浪漫優美的曲風深受觀眾喜愛，尤其第三樂章〈夜曲〉更是經常以改編的小提琴獨奏版本演出。「死亡與少女」為舒伯特飽受疾病之苦時所寫，作品引用作曲家另一首同名藝術歌曲主題，沉重憂鬱的樂音深刻描繪「死亡」與少女之間的對話，最終樂章帶入塔朗泰拉舞曲風格，強烈的節奏被形容為「與『死亡』共舞」，全曲戲劇張力十足，無疑為舒伯特登峰造極之作。
