I love halušky so much too! I am really happy to see foreigners liking them as well - especially thise like you who also decided to live here it makes me happy! We usually go to salaš to eat them after trip during summer so I usually eat them on summer days. But when I go visit grandparents at their cottage house in village in Liptov or when I visit them in general sometimes she makes them and I agree that homemade ones are the best. One day I’d have to learn how to properly make them cos my mum is not confident in making them so that’s why we only eat them at restuarant or at grandma’s!

I have a different suggestion. maybe you could show how to make some filipino foods? I would recommend to go with mango float, there are all ingredients available in slovakia. Salko - condensed milk, mango in every supermarket i hope (even not as authentic as in philippines lol), instead of grahams you can use either BeBe, Marina or can go for piskoty.
The other suitable snack might be banana cue however i am not sure if you will be able to get the right bananas for that.
Or maybe you can compare siomai with slovak plnena kapusta? just thoughts i think may slovaks find interesting

Hi Igor, that sounds a very interesting idea! I will plan this and find all the ingredients I will need to make the video. Not sure about mango float tho, because so far I haven't had a good mango that I thought would be good for the float 😂😂😂 Mangoes here are huge but not very sweet! about the banana que, I found the variety of banana like we have in Philippines but it is ridiculously expensive, I can't accept buying it knowing that I am only buying it in Philippines for less than a Euro per kilo 😂😂😂 But yea, great ideas. I will plan this for my future videos 😉😉 Thank you!

Halusky is a food we eat in my family basically every week and we make them according to an old family "recipe" which says, no egg. I am very passionate about this topic so I am sorry in advance but I am able to talk people's ear off about this haha, it's my favourite food. I know some Slovaks think that egg is an automatic part of the recipe and they use it because it's easier to make with it, as you do not really have to find the right consistency as when you just have potatoes and flour and people are afraid it won't stick together without the egg. (Then there are people who put flour and egg together and make "halusky" with that and I would bodily fight those lol. That's nokerle which at most you can use as a side for your perkelt...anyway...) I am not saying that my great great grandparents have invented halusky and are the only ones right but people originally from the region with old recipes usually agree on no egg (I say "recipe" because there is no real measurments). Bryndza is also an interesting topic...we get ours from local salas and there is this saying, that May bryndza is the best and I agree. Bryndza didn't use to be available year around and we also tend to make halusky with other cheeses like bambino mixed with smotana, cottage cheese and also sauerkraut in the winter because even if you can get bryndza in December now at the supermarket, the taste is not right:'). But the most non traditional thing we do about halusky is, we make them from gluten free flour because everyone except my mom is either a celiac or very gluten intolerant. Anyway, I am happy to see foreigners enjoy bryndzove halusky because as you said, to many the taste is off putting and people from countries where they usually do not make and eat variety of "weird" cheeses are not huge fans. I am involved in Korean community in Slovakia and I know exactly about two Korean people who enjoy bryndzove halusky, lol.

And would you mind telling me what kind of gluten-free flour you use for the Halušky? Normally, we use buckwheat for cooking but we haven't tried it for halusky, which one you think is the best gluten-free flour for halusky taste-wise? Would really appreciate your advice on this! Thanks a lot and merry Christmas 💜

One small variant in preparation of bryndzove halusky we do to make it a bit more tasty in my opinion. - not just putting bryndza on top of halusky, but a bit of hot water where halusky were prepared is left in bowl with bryndza added directly into and stir. Hot halusky with water disolve bryndza nicely and coat all halusky eventually. After that its being server. Just sour cream is added on top of dish with fried bacon. But has to be eaten immediately after preparation. If kept to cool down to ambient temperature its like concrete then :D

I love them. Haven't had them in a while because I was diagnosed with milk and egg intolerance a couple of months back :( but I do miss them. My mom and brother don't eat them at all. So she would do them for me and daddy and make strapacky for herself - dumplings with sour cabbage. My grandparents used to put pazitka - I have no idea how to say it in English, on top of them, not onions. I don't think the taste is much different, it's a nostalgia thing mostly. But for me that is the proper way to season them.
Also, beautiful presentation of the dish.
Have you tried zemiakove placky or zemiakova baba? My grandpa used to make the best zemiakova baba or chudobnica, as we called it. Those are the dishes you can't reproduce no matter how hard you try, unfortunately. They are similar but the dough is a bit different, also one is a pancake and the other is more of a cake-y shape.
Or pirohy? In many places they are made from potato dough but my grandma made them from the same dough as noodles and filled them with "povidla" - it's a type of plum jam, the only one I like, and poppy seeds on top. But there are many variants and fillings, both sweet and savory. Depending on where in country you ask.

    • @ChasingKimberly
      @ChasingKimberly  3 года назад +1

Hello! I think pažítka is chives in English? Maybe? 🤣 I also like it on my Halušky because it makes additional fresh flavor.
I also tried the zemiaková placka because its my husband favorite so he always cook it for us.
I tried pirohy filled with Bryndza and I loooove it too 😋😋

You must try bryndzové halušky with fresh bryndza from a real salaš! The flavor of the bryndza becomes then stronger and even richer, and of course it helps to keep Slovak salašes alive. 10 out of 10, try it!
(Slovak health tip: Some doctors say that eating fresh bryndza even supports immunity because it contains a lot of kinds of bacteria, that the body can build immunity from.)

Lol I made bryndza from fresh cheese when I had goats. The process is as follows ... You take fresh cheese, really fresh when it's made. You grind it with a meat grinder and sprinkle just the correct amount of salt on it and mix it. Then you let it ferment by room temperature for a week. That makes the special taste. Yeah it's actually fermented fresh cheese however we call it white gold here :D

In first place I would like to say that I like your channel and I like the way you do your videos. 😊👍
I have one question for the cheff (your husband) and then a trip-tip for maybe the best salaš in Slovakia 😁 So the question is, how he made the bryndza sauce so nice because it is not very easy and you didn't show it in this video, it is important to show this to the people (video Halušky part 2.?😁). This is of course the best slovak meal ever and I just want to be sure that each one who tries it at home will do it and enjoy it in the best possible way 😋🍽️🍺
And now the tip for a trip 😁 The best salaš here what I know and you will have beautiful experience from there is "Salaš Krajinka" near to Ružomberok, in the midle of Slovakia. When this corona craziness will finish you have to do a trip there 👍 So thats all and thank you again for a nice propagation of our country 👏🤗

I'm Slovak and I don't really fancy bryndza. :-) We used to eat halušky with tvaroh (I'm not sure what the English word for tvaroh is, the dictionary says quark but nobody knows what that is - except Germans of course, because Quark is actually used in German), it's less salty than bryndza. Sometimes halušky are eaten with cabbage (good for your digestion), the food is also known as strapačky.

Another delicious meal you will really love is MAKOVE ALEBO ORECHOVE REZANCE- pasta with ground poppy or walnuts, with lots of slightly fried butter and plenty of sugar- plus good cup of warm or cold milk and you are in paradise. I guarantee you that. And my favourite in summer- fresh bread with spread lard on top , plenty of onion on top of it, plenty of salt on onion, so onion looses its juice and good cold beer with it-just great. A bit spicy, aromatic, but i love it. And local speciality only here and in Czech republic- VZPRAZANY SYR S TATARKOU- fried cheese with tartar sauce and roasted potatoes or french fries- high calories bomb, but very very tasty. Make sure that cheese has at least 50 to 60 % of fat, and put some small pieces of onion and black pepper into tartar sauce-it makes the taste of it smoother and stronger- plus good cold beer and sugar shock is on the way-then take a nap and beautiful day is over😉Watch out for growing belly 😉 If you like rice, try RYZOVY NAKYP,basically rice pudding-sweet and served with fruit syrup.
