I keep coming back to your videos, especially the multiple tips ones. Thank you so much for putting the time, effort and exposition to make people play the violin better. Reading the comments, I feel that I am not the only one really appreciating it 🙂 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Nice video! I would add two more thoughts. First, if the scroll is low, then your bow will be pulled downhill toward the fingerboard. This is usually fixed by raising the height of your shoulder rest or your chin rest. I had this problem back when I was in high school. But since I didn't realize the cause of the crooked bow, I thought that bowing straight must just be one of those things that needs a lot of practice and attention while playing. Second, with the "connect the dots" exercise, it's also helpful to play a short note at the frog and at the tip. This adds direction to the dots. It a bit like how some phones will take a few short pictures in a row; when you look at the picture later, it shows a split second of motion before the still image. I loved the straw idea. I'll add that into my teaching toolkit.
These are great additions to this subject - thanks! One of my teachers asked me to do your second suggestion. At the tip, play a little down bow, at the frog a little up bow, with nothing in between. Strangely satisfying and effective :)
OMG, thank you so much. As a violin player I had this issue for many years, but become worse when I switched to viola, and the angle of the instrument changed to adapt myself to the new size and weight.
Thanks!! It's called Video Delay Instant Replay. There is a free and pro version (the pro version has no ads). Blue symbol with a big V on it. Happy practicing!
Thank you for this video! It was really helpful. I’ve been playing for 3 years and I’m just now having problems with keeping my bow straight. Is this bad?
Glad you like the video Angela. It's normal for the bow to go crooked even after we have had it straight. I've been playing for 40 years and mine still goes out every once in a while and I have to use all of these methods to get it back in line :)
Glad it's useful. I use an app called video delay pro as monitoring tool for my physical work sometimes - it's great! Sometimes I imagine my arm sandwiched between two invisible sheets of glass and that seems to help. 😊

@@practizma thank you! This made me feel a little better 😅
Great! Do you have any tips for keeping the bow straight on the other plane, i.e. to stop it from dipping up and down?

@@practizma I'll try that. Thanks.
Can you send us a link for the mirror? I can’t seem to find one like yours.
