hi y'all! it's Anjali. I'm rewatching this almost a year later & I just want to pop in to say that while Sufi has grown to appreciate vegetarian food more during her time with me, we definitely don't want to conflate vegetarianism with Indian culture as a whole - in fact, I'm not even vegetarian myself, and only one member of my family is. Conflating the two would feed into an idea of Indian culture that erases the existence and experiences of Dalit/Bahujan and Adivasi Indians, and we're not about that narrative. We're looking forward to continuing our anti-Caste learning and looking critically at ourselves and our communities as our first steps. Nobody has called us in on this or asked us to address it, we just think it's important to make note of it and hold ourselves accountable - thanks for reading!
@@scifigrl92 About 30% of the population is, which means India has more vegetarians than rest of the world combined. It's more prominent in Northern & Western India and many Hindu families that do eat meat in these regions typically don't eat it everyday and certainly not for every meal. I'm not a vegetarian myself, but it's entrenched with Indian culture. In any major city, you'll find hundreds of vegetarian only restaurants, and even the ones that serve both would typically have 50% of the menu catering to only vegetarian food. KFC/Mcdonalds/Burger King, etc. have at least 3-8 vegetarian options with many different veggie patties made of different plant-based foods. Food companies are required by law to have a mark on packaged foods to indicate whether it's vegetarian or not, green dot signifies vegetarian and red dot non-vegetarian. India is incredibly diverse from state to state and region to region. India has at least 30 languages with over a million native speakers, with each state having their own language, cuisine, and culture. And this is reflected in food habits too. When this popped up in my recommend I clicked it so fast. I started to tear up. There's so little representation in the media of Indian girls let alone QUEER Indian girls. My family literally sees gayness as a 'white people thing' because that's what they see (We live in Canada). I live with my parents and grandparents (as is common in Indian families) and I've always had no idea how to come out because its still such a foreign concept to my family. And every coming out video is about Christians and while that is great... I never saw people who looked like me or people of my culture sharing their stories so it felt like I was alone and doing everything blind. I used to send requests to big lesbian channels asking them to bring in guests from different cultures if they knew any to speak about this topic, but nothing happened. Thank you so much for this.
I love that they show you can be an active participant in your culture and be a “true” brown person and still be gay. I feel like often when POC come out as gay, people treat that as a white or whitewashed “lifestyle”, when you can be immersed in your culture and still defy a stereotype.
The worst thing is that my parents have no clue abt lgbt+ community. So even if I decide to come out, Imma have to spend some time explaining what it is. I can't handle that stress.

Guys definitely have it way harder. I feel like I get away with A LOT of things hitting on a girl as a girl. i.e. The things I do or say could come off as creepy or weird from a guy but from a girl, it's friendly and cute.
W P guys have it harder when approaching woman due to the statistics of male violence. The simple fact that a man can overpower a female if he chooses to is enough for most females to put up a strong guard. Plus females learn quick that you can't give a male too much leeway as he will escalate it from there and be ticked off that you're a tease n led him on which can turn violent sometimes. They have nobody to blame but themselves for why it's harder for them.
