The stigma to anything sexual in the Indian society is downright hypocritical. Remember, we are not even talking about the poor here. Sex education in this country is something that children are expected to 'pick up' when they become adults. How would males be treating a female if they haven't even had a meaningful conversation with them their entire life?
And as far as government intervention is being discussed, a government that can't even properly enforce traffic lights can't be expected to regulate red light districts. It's a problem they don't understand, and due to the stigma, don't even want to.
It really is glorious being a female in this country. Abso-fucking-lutely glorious.
India is fucked in many ways but let's not give people a one-sided representation of the female experience in India. Most of my relatives live in India and the women do just fine. In fact, I'd say my female cousins are better educated and more responsible (taking care family and doing college educated work) than the guys (mostly farmers). This is not in Mumbai but just saying. Women have to be careful but it ain't necessarily a hellhole for them.
But yes, sex is hugely stigmatized. Also, traffic and pollution are my biggest complaints about India.

I did a paper was on sex trafficking in India for research.
As sad as it sounds this is how it works in India! There's a head of brothel( female ) looking after a harem of girls in return for sexual favours for her clients.
Here's the part which breaks my heart!
1)the girls are forced into sex trade before 18
2)they are not entitled an option to leave even if they want to!
3) if they did somehow escape they don't have the life skills to live and resort to the same work they escaped from
4) few girls in the harem lose hope for themselves and give up. They don't want to be rescued anymore! This gets worse as They have kids when they clearly know they can't take care of them but still do so because they find a reason to live for!
Kids as expected are not in the right minds from day 1! And this sad story continues!
5) less than 2% of the people in the whole sex trafficking business control the rest of the 98% at various levels of authority and have various purposes to serve!
Needless to say the 2% take the lion share of the billion dollar Syndicate and leave scraps for the rest of 98% !

In my country prostitution is legal and well regulated but still sex trafficking happens but it’s always the unregulated back room massage parlours that prey on foreigners brought over from Asia with a promise of legitimate work. As much as I don’t like prostitution on moral grounds I think the only way to fight sex trafficking is for it to be legalised and regulated.
In the years since prostitution was legalised here conditions in brothels have improved both for workers and clients alike. Increased security, mandatory health checks, improved hygiene and strict codes of practice have cleaned up the industry.
We would be naive to think the world’s oldest profession can be stamped out by prohibition.
Of course I come from a first world country so there’s not the rampant poverty and corruption to contribute to the conditions we see on the video. I’m absolutely appalled at what goes on in Mumbai and pretty much all over the developing world. I don’t know how a man could be turned on in such sickening circumstances with young girls that are obviously coerced. They are sick.
