Put a set of Cragar SS wheels on it and that was my high school ride in '83-84! Loved that car. Fun to drive, predictable handling, easy to nearly double the stock horsepower. With the hatchback and the fold down rear seat, I did everything from camping to hauling my drums.
It grows on me more and more. I believe ppl hate them so much bc there isn’t many nice ones remaining. And in rough shape they are very ugly when they clean they are as bad

I have a 1978 Mustang II Coupe with V-8. I have had it since it was new. As I live in Texas, there is no rust on it. However, the Texas heat has caused the V-8 problems. I have put a better radiator on it to help. It is on is second engine(over heated the first) and third paint job. It does look good at present though.
That's an absolutely beautiful II. You probably got a great deal. You've seen how much people are asking for Mustang II V8s these days!? Enjoy those parts. I've found II parts to be expensive compared to other Mustangs - they don't remake them and they're all gone crushed. Wreckers still crush them without parting them.
Back in the 1980s, I worked with a really nice guy who owned a 78. We would go out for lunch together a lot, and he would drive it. He had a red Mustang 2 Cobra, and it drove really nice.

I had a friend with an old Falcon and he pulled the oil pan and pump.And fixed a piston rod and you could balance a nickel on it.I think he held the Nitros button down a little too long.

Car looks awesome as it sits, get a hotter 302 in it and maybe upgrade suspension and brakes and go have fun. You will have the only one at whatever car show you take that to....
I like the Mustang II fastback cars more than the coupes or Ghia's, but I'd be happy with any of the Mustang II's. I had a 1974 Mach I, the first year, and the only year a V8 version didn't exist. You can easily tell a 74 from the 75 through 78's, because the grille sits back at least an inch where it was practically flush on the later years (to make room for the V8 to fit). Mine was green with black trim and comfortable enough that my wife and two preteen kids could enjoy it together. Even though it was a V6, 4 speed car, it was reasonably powered for the day. Your Cobra II is super nice with the tons of mods already done to reconcile the only issue of the day, more power.
I like it, takes me back to my youth, even though these were looked down on because we grew up with power for the time muscle cars before the Govment crackdown. I'd jump on that car fast if I'd of found it. If people don't put the flex agent in paint for the plastic bumpers and such, it will crack and craze with ease.

Great car! Looks like it's missing the quarter window louvers. Hope you can find some and put them on since they add a lot to the look of the Cobra II. I bought a 76 Cobra II brand new back in the day. It was blue with white stripes, and when I saw one in that color combo on the street, I had to get one. It was a lot of fun.

That car is in GREAT SHAPE! sounds like something may be going on in the value train when you first started it but it wouldn't be a bad idea to take a look at for piece of mind. But it sounds real good and smooth ounce it warmed up a little. Seems like you gout yourself a great deal/steal there. Iv'e been a Mustang lover since their beginning but what is it with Fox body Mustang owners always dissin the Mustang II and calling them ugly... I know they weren't fast but that was only because of the era it was born and they arnt ugly and at least it still looked/resembled the Mustang. The Fox body Mustangs don't look or even resemble a Mustang. Yea they started making them perform again which was appealing to the public but it looked more like the Capri than a Mustang. If there was and ugly Mustang it was the 80's Mustangs, the 90's weren't bad and they started getting back to some of the body lines of the Stang and in the late 90's & early 2000's they nailed it when they retro'd it, but thats my opinion. I love'm all. Mustang owners are like Harley owners, its a brotherhood. by the way I had to laugh a little cause after you heard it and you know it has some power under the hood you said, "this is a cool lookin car" Wait till you take it for a ride! 👍 I look forward to more videos on this car to see if it does have any issues.

It also has a 66' 289 hipo in it thats been bored camed and a little head work, about 450hp and with only 2654lbs. curb weight it is a F'n BLAST to drive. im gettin ready to rebuild the engine again and I plan on balancing the engine and going to lose the Holly 750 and going with the Holley Sniper EFI kit.

These Smog and Malaise Era (73-88) Cars are the HOT right now to build into Daily Drivers/Cruise-In/ Cars and Coffee/Weekend Fun Cars, and not just the Mustangs, but all of them, Mustangs, Mavericks, Thunderbirds/Cougars, Malibu's, Nova's, Grand Prix's, Cutlass's, Regals, Monte Carlo's, The 3rd gen Camaro's, The Late C3 and C4 Corvete's, and the X/J body cars, the Chevettes, Omni's and Chargers. With the Economy in the shitter people no longer have 40-60k to go out and buy a new car, but they have 2-3k to go out and buy an "Undesireable" classic car and put a 3-5k into it and bam, they have a car that they can drive back and forth to work during the week and have some fun in on the weekend, you can't even look at a pre-72 roller for 6-8k and they are getting a completed project for that. Every car since the CONvid Outbreak and the lockdown in my Car Club is a 73-85 car or truck, Which most were bought on the cheap to just have something to tinker around with in their garage while everything was locked down and they couldn't go anywhere. I built a 77 Cutlass and have drove it daily ever since, my next door neighbor has a 78 Mercury Monarch, The President of my Car club rebuilt his father-in-laws 74 Maverick for his wife and so on.
I drive a 75 Lemans Sport Coupe daily. I also have a couple of 79 Trans Ams, and a couple more 70's cars. Love the 70's cars, and cheap to own and work on.

This economy is CRAZY and with them and their 2 kids there's times where they barely keeping their head above water with the car payments and insurance plus living expenses, her husbands not a mechanic but he's not retarded when it comes to fixing stuff and there's a couple of us "old heads" at work that will pop over and help them with 'hard stuff" when it comes to the cars stuff.
I had a bunch of these V8 cars..you must use the original oil pan.. pickup tube.. flywheel..motor mounts..these are all specialized parts for the 75 to 78 V8 cars..Nice car though..hard to find

A few tips in case you dont know. Hopefully I can save you some time and misery lol Mustang II has a unique bellhousing and flywheel. They are smaller. To fit in the tunnel. The engine us offset 2 inches to the passenger side to clear the steering. There are only one set of headers that work and they are GARBAGE. youll need to make your own.

They’re lower on hp, but it’s pretty easy to get a decent amount with a 4 carb swap, aluminum heads, exhaust and some basic bolt ons
