- Unlock Serum's Secret Superpower with this Serum tutorial!
For a long time I thought this type of modulation wasn't possible in serum... I was wrong!
Audio rate modulation is a very powerful technique that can produce an unlimited number of sonic possibilities.
This technique used in this video is somewhat of a spiritual successor to the technique used in this video: • [Serum tutorial] Darkp...

Thanks for that feeling, I listened for a few seconds and found myself in the forest on illegal party with friends. Tutorial - dual thanks for sharing the knowledge 🙌🏼
Same haha just took a few seconds
O felt the same . The feeling of arriving at high frequency music festival ! 👏🏼👏🏼
love this sound! thanks for the tutorial. Not a psy producer myself, more into minimal stuff but this is definitely helpful. I love how every genre of electronic music uses certain tricks and techniques that others don't, listening to lots of different music is essential
look arist made minimal trance is name is Minimal Criminal
Serum continues to be full of surprises. Great tutorial.
what a technic !!!!
As you mentioned, there's all kind of crazy sounds to be found, guess I'll be looking for them now ;)
try filter fm ;)
Dude this Technic is so insane, mostly the Noise osc controls the Parameter like over the Vibration coming from the Noise, this is Insane!
it’s is pretty cool huh!
Had no idea you could drag an LFO into the noise oscillator 😮😮, and i overlooked that you can send an oscillator into the noise osc as well. Very nice! Subbed!
yeah, as u said i really dig this sound as well....
Amazing insight of one of the most pleasing timbers you can achieve using simple modulations! Great explanations as well! Thanks Shep! ❤
Thank you so much for sharing all this beautiful knowledge about Dark/Forest Psy oriented sounds. I really appreciate. Keep it Foresty!
that's so awesome.
never knew that you could use the ''audio sampler'' as a ''time selector'' modulation, you get amazing new results with this instead of using the lfo or chaos all the time.
Just tried it, the amount of textures we can get from 1 fm as simple as a basic saw with a few modulations going.
Awesome work brother.
Thumbnail sold me
Awesome ! I make presets for Pigments mainly but if I had more time I'd love to explore Serum (sounds so good for those tight FM sounds)
pigments is fantastic, i think it might sound a bit better than serum even. But for me Serum has the best interface so i use it the most :) I’ve found with Pigments sample oscillator as a modulator you can get similar results to the effects in this video
Legend! Thanks bro - this has given me some much needed inspiration after a patch of creative block
I hope this helps you through it bro 🥰
I'm gonna use this!! Been wanting to find this technique for so long😅 Thanks for sharibg!🙏
one of the nastiest patches i ever seen demonstrated, although im pretty much a novice. Thanks!
This right here is the 4AM content I live for
Thank you so much! never ceases to astonish us with hidden in plain view configurations
"Go to waveform, single, then click send to noise osc"
My head exploded from that alone, simply because I have some double fm patches involving the noise osc and I was limited to very few waveforms that it included (dont even get me started on trying to trim one wave on ableton 😂)
i know the feeling man, it’s life changing knowledge 😂
hahaha no way. i instantly saw the balojax track and i was like this dude likes Deviant Species so this has to be worth my while
haha you got it bro!
Happy to see a new tutorial on your channel ! Its miss me !
Yeah! NEW Video!! Awesome and inspire as always!!!
Very nice! I prefer using FM from Noise and set mod depth to about 50% and manually tweak the pitch of the noise and set the octave in the carrier signal if it's FM i'm going for at least. However I won't get it in key this way but good enough timbre to work with anyway
nice yeah both ways are cool! i quite like using a mixture of the two, textures can get super crazy that way. However i do really like being able to RM or Sync warp so that kinda forces me to do it this way. On the other hand noise osc modding the sync warp can also be aweosme af. On the other other hand filter fm with the noise osc is really tasty
@@MuteProduction Gotta try that, experimenting with the noise osc is still quite uncharted territory for me. I know it's always been there but never really dived into it
@@DaddaPsy it’s very powerful! if only we could use osc a/b in the same way!!!!
Would be awesome with a tutorial on arrangement with those small sounds that just make your head spin around :P
Awesome stuff as always man, nice one!
Dope technique. Will try 👽👍
Awesome thank you
Cool breakdown. The Noise OSC is also cool because you can drag any .wav sample into it, so you can layer in your own drum/instrument one shots or loops or anything into it, and basically you can have your modulation source have some tonal characteristics of say, a brass stab or drum break.
Also, OSC A and OSC B can both use FM from the Noise on the Warp knobs, so you can always additionally do FM modulation directly onto an OSC from the Noise OSC.
If you want extra wonkiness, play with the Phase knob on the Noise OSC while your sounds are playing, especially if you dragged a more realistic noise sample into the Noise OSC, because it's like playing with the playhead position in a granular FX. The Phase knob is like a sample start time, and the Random knob adds a bit of variation on top of that. The Noise OSC can somewhat become a granular OSC.
all good points, in particular that manipulation of the phase is super powerful, I quite like using the velocity to control the phase and pitching the noise osc right down! :)
full support. thx for your work
wow that is really cool. Im definitely goigng to use this! thanks
woooh thanks a lot mute for this secret trick 🙏🏻🤫
Sick tutorial and very very lovely sound! Thanks for sharing it
thanks man! unfortunately i don’t have any releases yet!
@@MuteProduction u should release your music! It's too good for being not published
nice Styleee! kick and bass killa
Smashing. Can you make tutorial for a full on synth and fx??
Thank you man. Your tuts always inspiring me 💫💫
The best!
Great video sir.I need to study Serum
Gracias por explicar bien, gracias por tu tiempo, me fue de mucha ayuda bro.
de nada bro 😎
Veryyyy nice trick thank you so much for sharing it :)
5:25 is the sweetspot
Thank you
Mad tutorial! Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for the video man🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
amazing, bro!
Lots of great tips!
Magic!
Muchas gracias!! Contenido muy bueno ❤
nice, i didnt know about this function
Haha freaking awesome 🤩🤩🤩
Thnx for sharing..
Very interesting mate! :)
You tha man!
thanks man really useful!
Bro @Mute Production...please make a tutorial on how you making all the other foresty sounds that are in the background of the song. Like the whale type squelch singing lead that's singing in the back and the atmost, and the bell sounds....Lol sorry for asking much
i’ll see what i can do for the whale squelch thing
Sweet.
Sweet as! =D
Great tutorial! In addition to the great Serum tips, I was very interested in the M4L Autoplay device but I've recently switched over to Bitwig. I found that the Rhythmizer VST is a good substitute for Autoplay. Cheers!
indeed! I believe you can make your own device in bitwig as well :) also there is a vst version of auto play called the acolyte :)
Beautiful. Now we need a video with this bass and kick 🤌🏻😏
The kick and bass are from the packs; forest kicks and psybass vol.2 :) i might do a video on forest bass though…
@@MuteProduction What pack? Would love to see it.

JUICY!
i love the video and only watched the intro
Hey what was the note generator thingy you were talking about at the 5:43>? Sounds good, but I've got no idea what you did.
I tend to use Autoplay from Altar Of Wisdom
Very very nice!
How can I generate random notes? I'm using fl studio?
When it comes to modulating the coarse pitch of the oscillator, I can’t wrap my head around the fact that ‘regular FM’ is pitched tracked as well, isn’t it, or am I missing something very obvious 😅 ? Basically why does FM from B with a saw doesn’t sound the same ? It’s actually phase modulation in that case I’m guessing ? Anyway love your sounds and sound design videos !
fm from b is phase modulation, which can sound great too but imo fm is a more powerful technique. there’s a number of different types of fm, read this if your interested learningmodular.com/understanding-the-differences-between-exponential-linear-and-through-zero-fm/
Great tutorial - thanks Shep!
awesome thanks
Hello, which version of Serum are you using? I can't find the "send to noise oscillator" option in the waveform editor
Thank you
ya i dont have it too , help
I have the same issue…have you found a solution?
@@radamadam4309 1.35 will give you this option
you need to update serum
Cool thanks, will try pull this off in Vital
in vital it’s very simple, just set an lfo to keytrack mode
Bro whats the story on that username
@@personnamed2764 It's my musician name, made it up in the middle of a song n it sounds bluesy...I havent harmed any dogs n I aint as skinny as I used to be!
@@faulderrr HAHA dude its awesome man, If i saw you're nameup at a festival I'd be sure to catch that set.
i missed the part fully, to pull llfo or waveform to the noice. Well done!
it’s a game changer huh!
@@MuteProduction yea super feature, it has to be made for Nighttime Goa of any kind.
@@Violentic81 it can also be used to make acid style sounds and squelches etc :)
@@MuteProduction Iam Super excited about this. After office i will play arround with this technique. Thanks again, for sharing
Thanks for wonderful video
Hello thanks for the Tutorial but what RYthm for the MIDI Notes is that. I have a lot of Issues with the MIDI Notes
6:32 pattern is fresh! Id keep that pattern for 16bars
Nice tutorial! Wondering how you made the bass in that example here.
it’s a preset from this pack: muteproduction.gumroad.com/l/BassV2
Thank you! Would be great to learn how to make that reverbertion on fx bell sound at 7:34. It sounds like you are inside of a big metal tube. May be you can share this project or sell? Im trying to find out how to get that reverberation, but cant find out which pluging can do it. That specific psy trance "synthetic" reverberation topic completely is very interesting.
I think the effect your looking for can be achieved with a very short delay or alternatively a flange/comb filter
I dont understand what is happening...is the oscillator modulating the noise wave or are we replacing the noise wave with the saw wave sample inside the noise oscillator and isnt this the same as just creating the same saw shape on an lfo and using it as a mudulator ause it certeanly sounds hte same to me..also which version of serum is this
it is the same as using the lfo like that but it will track the speed of the ‘lfo’ to the key you press
Really interesting technique. I can definitely get some sweet sfx from this. What did you use as a midi trigger? Arpeggiator or something similar? :)
I used Altar of Wisdom’s ‘Autoplay’ device to generate midi :)
@@MuteProduction thanks for answering 🤗
@@SlayerDarkRaver 🤗
Man, I didn't know you could do all that. Very interesting, I'll try this for non-forest projects and see what happens!
Dam some gnarly tones after experimenting with different wavetables and modulating the noise osc pitch. What else could i modulate with the noise osc for interesting textures and sounds?
phase, volume, sync warp, octave, filter cutoff…. just try everything
Hello !! Please help me, I try to follow the steps but in my Serum version there's no Send to noise oscillator option in the Table Edit.. why can it be?! I love this sound!! thanks for sharing, I hope I can achieve this sound is amazing!! cheers
you need to update serum
your voice is similar of Korg from Thor
My serum dont have this option to send to noise oscilator, that appears in the beginning of tutorial
you need to update serum bro
Kept trying this out last night. But once I get most set up and turn on the filter to start sweeping the cutoff Serum goes bonkers and keeps turning the filter off. If I keep turning it back on eventually Live crashes. Any tips?
hmm that sounds bad… perhaps try update serum?
awesome
Frags of 12-24! Thanx. #omnirecordsstralia
i dont know how or why but i dont have that option to send to the noise oselator oof
you need to update serum :)
if i go to wavetable, editor, single, theres no option for send to noise osc :/
update serum bro
i cant see "send it to noise osc" button when i try to do that,
update serum bro
Please make a tutorial of the process of kick and bass, this sounds fat
Second
when I click edit on the wavetable and go to single, there is no option to send it to noise osc?
update serum
Fireee
I dont have the option to send it to the noise option :( help
update serum bro
it seems like i don’t have the option “send to noise osc. “, might that depend from the version?
i think you need to update serum
Heia , I'm missing "send to noise oscillator" option. How can I fix that? 😊
you need to update serum
I'm using vital and I can't for the life of me get that bubbly sound with the random oscillators modulating the pitch. It gets close, but it sounds so clicky compared to this.
try an lfo on keytrack mode to modulate the pitch
@@MuteProduction yep, just found your Vital tutorial for Bubbly Nightpsy sounds; exactly what I needed. You're the man. Thank you!!
awsome tip
i have only % instead of semitones in noise osc?? i have 1.334 ver
you need to click the keytracking button in the noise osc
Thank you, I've been trying to figure out how you did this ever since I bought your sample pack
now you know! 😄
can you do an update to this as i dont have "send to noise osc" in the drop down @2:28
you need to update your Serum
What is the noise actually modulating? The filter cutoff or the saw wave? Or what is modulating the saw wave??
Or is the saw wave modulationg the noise oscilator? But what are you doing with the lfo? 🤔
The noise oscillator is modulating the pitch of oscillator A. The LFO is not being used, I’m just drawing shapes in there to feed into the noise osc.
@@MuteProduction because when you changed the lfo the sound also changed. Is the lfo wave used as noise oscilator?
that is correct
why i dont have this feature..?
I think you need to update bro
yoo why dont i have the send to noise osc in the newest serum
you need to update serum dude
