@SnoopWillPac SkateOn same I like to play more games offline than online soo.....if we're not able to consistently play offline for more than 2weeks at a time that's booty.
This was a really informative and helpful video, offline mode is something rarely looked into when people talk about the steam deck, I myself forgot to look into it until I saw that reddit post where the dude had issues with offline mode on a plane.
i've always hated drm for this very reason. i was in the navy for 10 years, so obviously when i was in, for years, it was a deal breaker for me. if i cant play games i own and paid for while i was out at sea, then i wasnt going to waste my money on it. but even here state side, you never know when you internet might go out. or maybe you might find yourself in hard times and have to stop paying for internet for awhile. or in this case, its a portable system. do these companies really think its just ok that you cant access a product you paid them for?
Sadly they do think it’s okay. They make their games require an online DRM to deter people from pirating games. Which doesn’t really work at all and just hurts the consumer. The companies that do this don’t care if the customer don’t have access to it since people keep buying from them anyway.
OK!!! So.... you can absolutely play games on your steam deck offline. Although some games won't (most Rockstar games require you to sign in, in order to save progress). But just about anything else you can download, accept all licenses for the game, and turn your steam deck on Airplane mode/shut off wi fi and be good to go. For some reason nobody can just come out and say YES THE STEAM DECK GAMES CAN BE PLAYED OFFLINE BUT SOME GAMES YOU CANT. How hard is that???
Maybe valve should put a little DRM tag on games that have a always online DRM or a re-login online DRM to let people know what games won’t work off-line
I'm living in my car in Amish country right now and I just never got into my switch because the games price tags thinking about picking up a 399 model and a 512 as my Christmas gift so I can play some borderlands or bring the pain with project zomboid this will almost entirely be an offline console for me other than charging and work wifi to download games

@@Cub__ you can, but it depends on the game and if it requires you to have an Internet connection to play :) honestly, I'm having an absolute blast with my steam deck! Much better than a streaming service over broken/ low 4g+ connection :)
@@buddybleeyes Awesome to hear that because I sometimes want to play games offline or if I'm never around Wifi and chill... What games do you play if you don't mind me asking? Wonder if Boarderlands 2 would work offline, cheers!
In my humble opinion I think that any single player experiences should not require an active internet connection. For multiplayer games and even more so for MMOs it's completely understandable that active internet connection is required because how else you would play with others. It's not that I don't understand why companies may want to use DRM. It's to protect their product and their rights. In a long run it will only affect those who own legitimate copies of the games. I assume those who pirate the games have games without the DRM or it's behavior is changed so that it's not doing what it should (because otherwise what would be the point of pirating if DRM was working as intended?), so if the DRM affects legitimate owners but not pirates then why to use it at all? Maybe it could be there just for a month or two after the launch until it loses its effectiveness but after that I don't really see the point of it. To be fair, I've never been much into absolutely having to get games on launch (although I can understand the appeal to some degree), so in that case if there was a month or a few period when DRM was active on launch but later removed then those who don't like it could get the game after the launch period and those who don't mind it but want to play it sooner could get the game at launch. It's not that I support DRM. As long as it doesn't bother my gaming experience, go too deep into privacy or affect the performance of the hardware then I'm most likely able to ignore it. If it starts affecting some of these in a way that I become aware of it then I definitely think there is a problem. If it is one time check on first launch of the game just to check that the installed game is a legitimate copy then I can accept that. If it prompts me every time for an internet connection on each launch then yeah, there is a problem. I mean, if I already have installed a legitimate copy of the game then why would I suddenly have a pirated copy of the game the next day or the next week? I'll admit I've used pirated copies of some games in the past but if I recall correctly, that was before I started using Steam for most of my gaming needs. Steam makes it a lot more convenient to get games legally, and various sales around the year makes the prices quite reasonable. Can't afford a game? Put it in your wishlist and wait for a notification about a discount for the game from Steam. In fact I have bought so many games over the years that my problem is not so much lack of games but lack of time playing them. Anyway, my main point is that I hope Valve can come up with something that makes the offline experience on Steam Deck even better and better for the customers. I don't expect all the game companies to remove the DRM from all of their games completely but it would be great if they could find a solution that satisfies both the gamers and the game companies.
I get that the offline mode needs some fixes, but what I don't get is why people are making a big deal of it. You can literally turn on airplane mode and play your games. I do this all the time on my Deck. If I need to connect to the net, I just toggle on Wi-Fi while still in airplane mode. Am I missing something here?
The problem is that the benifit of portability is playing on the way to work, on planes, or somewhere where Internet isn't a possibility.. It sucks when you sit down at your 4 hour flight and you can't play any of your single-player games because they don't launch.
@@tf2293 That's literally the point of Airplane mode. So that you can play on planes and places where you can't have radios firing. I play in airplane mode all the time. Even at home sometimes.
Good video, thats literally what i asked for you.I loved that you do a follow up for how long can you stay and whats the offline experience after the patch.
I heard of some users who got logged out of their steam deck and couldn't essentially use it because it sepnt too long in offline mode, would be nice to have a confirmation on this aspect. Beside, the issue with GOG is that it doesn't support offline achievements, so even if you go through the hassle of installing those games through galaxy launcher on the steam deck, you would have to be connected to the internet to log them. Anyway since I bought the steam deck, I discovered how much of an hassle DRMs are, as opposed to the experience I had with my other portable devices like the PSP and PS Vita, so even if I cannot get offline achievements with GOG, I try to buy my game there when available, even just for the sake of having an offline DRM free installer, as many of the games available on gog are DRM free even on steam.
I have unlimited hot spot it makes it handy with the steam deck. But at work I have very little signal so I have to use offline mode. This has made me search for games that don’t require internet. Valve fixing offline mode was a huge help.
