There's always gonna be controversy over who and who isn't "Hair Metal." That's why I put it in quotes. I wouldn't call Skid Row, Savatage, or Van Halen Hair metal, but many people do as well as many top ten lists. Doesn't mean they're right but it means I have license to use them in these videos. ;) hehe
totally hair metal. great playing!
I wouldn't call Loudness hair metal either, they were a normal metal band who had a hair phase. Come the 90s they went back to their roots, their song Firestorm sounds like a long lost Megadeth tune.
@Ushio Yes! White Lion and Stryper. "Soldiers Under Command" has a great intro. White Lion's "Out With The Boys" and "Lets Get Crazy" also.
@Ushio Agreed. Stryper has songs like The Reign that are practically speed metal.
Cool, just like everything else you do! I was just surprised to hear Savatage there. One of my favourite bands.
Lay it down gives me chills everytime that opening riff comes in.
Everything considered: It's my choice for Riff Of The Entire Genre.
It's a sick lick for sure.. 🤘
The intro is my ringtone on my phone.
Killer riff
Warren was a guitar ninja
they have sooo many killer tunes, and this is one of the pinnacle efforts for sure.
I don't care what anyone says, 80s 'hair metal' high-treble rock is the best melodic guitar era. Such good writing from all of those bands.
What do you mean by high treble rock? Never heard that term before
@@mexstrat96 The tone, the treble is high. In the 90s and today the popular tones got darker.
Yes! 🤘🔥
@@mexstrat96 It refers to the high treble guitar tone of that era. It's not really a phrase, just a description.
There were a ridiculous number of bands, great songs and riffs.
Loudness kick ass!
M! Z! A!
Akira does not get the recognition he deserves. He is a legend!
RATT had some of the most underrated guitarists of the 80s. Especially in terms of writing riffs that just plain sounded cool.
Robin Crosby: Wanted Man, Round and Round, and Looking for Love
Warren DeMartini: Never use love, Lay it Down, and Shame Shame Shame
And Juan Croucier wrote some bangers too surprisingly though he was primarily the bassist.
Lack of Communication, You're in Love, and Body Talk.
Shame shame shame is a GREAT song!
I dig Juan croupiers vocals on lack of communication and your in trouble
JUAN CROUCIER WROTE THE RIFF FOR BODY TALK???!!! I love that song, by far my favorite Ratt song
Crazy Nights by Loudness & Hall of the Mountain King by Savatage, awesome!
Akira Takasaki & the late Criss Oliva are absolute legends and very underrated.
But yeah, I wouldn´t classify neither of these 2 bands as Hair/Glam Metal.
You got some Firehouse in there! Dude, I am a HUGE fan of their first album. I’d love to see you play/analyze some of the tunes off that album. Especially the soloing. 🤘
Yeah me too Bill Leverty is AWESOME!!!
@MJR, Jason, if you like Firehouse, go hunt out a self titled album by the Irish band, No Sweat.
Heart and Soul being the standout track, which even has one Joe Elliott getting a producer credit.
Their first record was my favorite record for a long time. Great memories!
XYZ - Inside out
White Lion - Hungry
Firehouse - Overnight Sensation
Motley Crue - Piece of Your Action, Live Wire
Great White - Step on You
Dokken - Kiss of Death
Scorpions - The Zoo, Animal Magnetism, China White, Lovedrive
I love XYZ. So underrated! Harem Scarem too.
good picks
Piece of Your Action and Animal Magnetism for the win!
Hell yes! Now that is a list! \m/ \m/
XYZ has amazing riffs!! Almost anything from their “hungry” album could be in these videos!
The Lay it Down riff is fire. One of the best riffs ever recorded. 🔥
Loudness is such an underrated metal band. they are amazing. Theres an insane solo in rock n roll gypsy wow mind blowing
M.Z.A.!!!
I LOVE SAVATAGE!! SO HAPPY TO SEE THEM HEAR. I used to have severe OCD and listening to that album was one of my escapes. Haven't heard that track in years.
I agree. One of my favorite groups to play back after high school. Especially Hall of the Mountain King.
STILL my favorite band! RIP, Criss Oliva!
damn, that Lay it Down opening riff is just one of the best riffs out there
LOVE you covered Siagon Kick. They were really underrated....incredible band
Wow, did not expect such an amazing job on the drums
💥 🤯
Lay it Down is great, but the opening riff for Lack of Communication is easily Ratt's heaviest riff ever.
Never use love is is also quite heavy. It's sort of polished version of Lack of.. I like it more.
Shit, first few Ratt albums were riff fests.
It's in the first video
Yes, every time I hear it is like heavier and heavier.
Love Loudness! They are so underrated. Their first few Japanese records are amazing. Would love to see you do a whole video on Akira Takasaki!
Finally Saigon Kick getting some recognition. Such an underrated band and Jason Bieler is such an amazing player
The Lizard is an absolutely amazing album. I remember when I picked it up 30 years ago. On my first listen front-to-back I was floored how good each song was. A vastly underrated gem at the tail end of glam/hair metal for sure.
@@MossTheBoss 100% right. Amazing and unique album that is overlooked since it came out at a bad time for that style.
@@MossTheBoss Ditto. Excellent band.
Still one of my favorite bands!
This! I saw them open for Extreme back in 92 or 93. Killer show.
Great selections. Notable mention that would be qualified for a future Part 3. . . . . 'Bang Go the Bells' by Babylon AD (from their 1989 self titled release)
Maryann from they debut album also has a really badass and heavy guitar riff
Babylon AD kicks ass!
Babylon AD "Hammer Swings Down" as well as "Bang go the Bells!", Wild Side "Hang on Lucy", White Lion "Lonely Nights".... so many, many more....
Babylon AD is the way to go! Underrated af
Bells don't go "bang"...they go "ding dong"
Love the fact that you threw in Saigon Kick and Savatage in the mix along with Loudness.
On your next one throw in some Bonfire, Lillian Axe and Stryper.
The heaviest lillian axe song I know would probably be misery loves company
LOVE all of these! I feel a playlist coming on haha. Looking forward to Part 3! 🤘🏻🔥
I'm gonna go with the following for Part 3....Winger-Big World Away, Stryper-Caught in the Middle, 5th Angel-Midnight Love, Malice-Breathin' Down Your Neck, Wildside- Hang on Lucy, Ice Water Mansion-The Swing. Throw is some Extreme as well. Maybe some Von Groove, Saints n Sinners, Badlands, Baton Rouge, oh and like someone said, definately Spread Eagle.
Another vote from me for Wildside.
Kiss animalize was a damn good album from start to finish… when I first heard that .. I said to my self.. the same kiss who wrote songs like firehouse, Detroit rock city.. I also thought that album was a bunch of other musicians who filled in for gene and Paul .. but nope.. gene Paul mark St. John and Eric carr played heavy… I’m a fan of animalize..
Never was a kiss fan but I loved that album too!
Animalize was Kiss's finest hour, IMO.
Here’s another great HEAVY Kiss moment:
ruclips.net/video/lXJ5r7tbVz4/видео.html
"I've Had Enough" is one of my favorite KISS songs. The energy is insane, and Paul's vocals are unmatched to me.
This is fantastic!
In high school, my friend and I used to set up at the church we went to when no one was there, because the acoustics were so freakin' good. He played electric guitar and I had two drum sets (Tama and Ludwig). We played just about all of the songs from your Hair Metal series. One Sunday, we went to get my drum set and there was a potluck dinner going on. They asked us to play. We just went off! There were some 80-year olds that looked somewhere between energized and terrified. 🤣💀
Wildside for the part 3! Their riffs are badass
This hair metal series has been great! I love how you do so many different styles and era's of rock/metal on your channel. You really do have something for everyone. It's great!
I’m surprised that nothing from Mötley Crüe’s self titled album has been in these videos. It’s really heavy compared to their older stuff
Their first two albums are heavy
@@TheOnlyHollywood1 kickstart
Ikr, the riffs that lee wrote should've been on here imo
@@TheOnlyHollywood1 true, but self titled is even heavier
THANK YOU. I said that on the last video he put out. The album-opening riff on "Power To The Music" is one of the heaviest riffs Motley ever did. That self titled record was their heaviest by far.
Another great list - love that “Lay It Down” was included! I’d still like to throw the intro riff from “Kiss of Death” from Dokken out as a riff to be included in #3. George Lynch is a beast!
Also “Valley of the Kings” from Blue Murder (a very under-appreciated band).
John Sykes such a great player.
Blue Murder/ John Sykes are amazing!
Nope nope nope. Just nope. Yes John Sykes is amazing. Those two whitesnake albums were the best ones. But Blue Murder….that was a stitch up. Absolutely abysmal. Go back and have a look and listen. Really hard to get thru a whole song these days without realising how bad that entire genre had become.
George Lynch is awesome.
Great video =). I'd suggest WASP's "Harder Faster", "Shoot from the Hip", and/or "Animal (F.L.A.B.)".
Videos like this from Mike and others have introduced me to so many bands I probably wouldn't have really listened to otherwise. I always enjoy these.
Ohhhh man! Throwing some Savatage in there at the end was awesome! Great series Mike! Loved the 1st one as well. Talk about some awesome memory flashbacks! Haven't seen ya in a while. Good to see you still rippin it! 🤘
Not sure if it’s hair metal but try and find a song from a band, W.A.S.P. fucking epic
Chainsaw Charlie🤘
Definitely hair metal and one of the best at that
@@BraydenM014 There's no such thing as "Hair Metal," as it was a derogatory term used by the grunge pu$$ies. W.A.S.P is definitely one of if not the best bands of all time, imo.
Loudness!!! Wow, that takes me back. I was in high school when Thunder in the east came out. Not sure I'd call them a "hair metal" band but that was the '80s. excellent choice, also Wasted. That was the 1st riff I ever learned. And Savatage?!?! Hell Yes!!!
Love the Hair Metal! Waiting for part 3, 4, 5 and more.
That Saigon Kick album, all of it, was so damn good!!
I've been a hair band fan all my life. They are always overlooked as great musicians
These videos are great! Perfect song selections! Keep 'em up!
Glad to see this genre getting some love! Keep 'em coming
These are really cool riffs! And your guitars sound and look great! 😁 Solid drumming, too!
Nice choices love all those songs…yeah that Heavens Trail by Tesla is heavy as you know what glad to see Savatage getting some respect that’s not easy to play.
Another great video. Love the sound quality 🤘🏻
Cool video! I really like the heavier side of hair metal. I miss W.A.S.P. on this list tough ;) They have some heavy songs too.
Part two was awesome! Part 3 possibly in the near future? Thanks for sharing! Digging your channel BIG TIME! 😉👍😎
Cool to see Saigon Kick in there. Great band. Heavy guitars and vocal harmonies.
This sounded soooo gooood!! Can't wait for Part 3!
Just like to add that you play those riffs insanely well. Good job fella.
That whole Saigon Kick album has got some kickass guitar. I was always kind of partial to "Body Bags".
Really great. Awesome sound and awesome playing!
Killer playing and tone. Your drum sounds and overall mixing are really, really good.
Great job as always! Hadn't heard a few of these before.
Love it! Takes my back! Back in the club days, used to see a band called Maxx Warrior and a couple of their members went on to Firehouse.
Thank you for not doing some long, drawn out, and totally unnecessary intro! Such a breath of fresh air.
So happy to see Savatage getting recognition. Criss Oliva was a guitar god. RIP.
Excellent list and playing as always!
man your tone is spot on both the drums and geetar and mixed perfect
What a great selection of riffs! Takes me back to high school.
You put so much into your videos - respect, bro. 😌🙏
I have to say what really caught my eye was the Charvel with the antique white crackle paint job. I have one I bought in the late '80's and this is the first I've ever seen another one. 🤘😎🤘
Stryper had some pretty heavy runs especially in the newer albums.
The people who don't check out Stryper because they get put off by the Christian themes and the sappy ballads are missing out on some scorchers for sure. Probably one of the top guitar duos from the era.
'Caught in the Middle' from Against the Law 1990 is a perfect example. Dead heavy
The Rock That Makes Me Roll has a killer riff
To this day Stryper still rocks all them other bands suck now
Yes the first Motley Crue is an incredible album I love the sound and the guitar is unbelievable
I have been part of this channel for a long time and completely missed this video. A few things are extremely clear in this video. First, it can be argued (very easily) that the 80s was a titanic peak of guitar composition and execution. Second, it is always a treat to see Mike's playing, especially as free and open as this. It's so *clean.* Lastly, I know that Mike acknowledged that Van Halen is not necessarily a hair metal band; though I will mention that Van Halen always called their genre "big rock," back in the day.
Great video set! Thank you! It would have been nice to see longer than .5 second shots of you and your studio. But hey, great song selection and thanks again for sharing.
Savatage! Saw these guys live while I was playing Army down at Ft. Bragg, and they had an amazing show. The sound, accuracy, energy, and everything that makes a great live show was perfect. Criss Olivia was a monster.
With that said, Warrent's Machine gun is a good and heavy underrated song. I also prefer Skid Row's Monkey Business. Not sure why, but it was always one of my favorites to play live.
Almost anything off of XYZ’s hungry album would make this list. Their debut album had some decently heavy stuff too. Amazing guitar player, Marc Diglio!
Agreed. The cover art is also spectacular.
Love that Firehouse album. Good stuff man!
Awesome!! Thanks for including @3:27 Saigon Kick, and @4:07 Savatage.
This series is incredibly entertaining!
Man, you are a BEAST on that ax! Love this stuff.
AWEsome! So glad to see and hear Bill Leverty from Firehouse get a mention here. Besides being an absolute monster of a player, he's SUCH a nice guy in real life. Totally underrated/overlooked as a player, IMHO.
Anyway, when you inevitably do Part 3 of this fantastic series, I'd offer up the following as rightful candidates, complete with two options per artist:
When Darkness Calls, Dance of the Dogs - Lynch Mob
Lights and Thunder, She's Got Everything - White Lion
Valley of the Kings, Ptolemy - Blue Murder
Kid Ego, He-Man Woman Hater - Extreme
High Wire, Sun Red Sun - Badlands
I don't know if you're planning on doing a part 3 to this or not, but def leppard can really provide a clinic on cool/heavy riffs. Tear it Down, and Stagefright being among my personal favorites. Also another band you could definitely think about riff wise is Extreme. Rest in Peace is such an underrated gem of a song and would love to see you feature it on your channel.
These riffs are fire!
Great video man. Good subject. 🤘❤️🤘
What a fantastic combo of songs! Was excited for the choice of Kiss And Crue song! Plus, the inclusion of Every Mothers Nightmare, Firehouse, Loudness, Savatage absolutely made my day!
Great vids man! Two "hidden gems" from Def Leppard are "I Wanna Be Your Hero" and "Ring of Fire" from their Retroactive album. I've always felt that if they had pushed these two songs instead of "Two Steps Behind", It would have helped rock music as we knew it to stay alive during the grunge takeover during the 90's
Awesome that you included Saigon Kick...grew up with them in Coral Springs, Fl...:) Jason taught guitar lessons for quite awhile down there..
Ratt and Saigon Kick are my two fav. bands from this genre. These would be their heaviest songs:
Ratt - Tell The World, You're in Trouble
Saigon Kick - Peppermint Tribe, Hostile Youth, New World, I.C.U., Month of Sundays, .....etc. they had plenty of cool heavy riffs!
+1 on the Saigon Kick!
Not the heaviest hair metal, but those who don't have a clue was that hair metal is much more musical than the current garbage being passes as music in most cases. This video doesn't showcase the lyric, bass lines or harmonies that together made a very musical and head banging experience. Best era ever for hard music that was still music.
Mick Mars is such an underrated guitarist!
Absolutely
I’d say underappreciated…he’s gotten his shine, just not on a pop culture level.
But, then again…you don’t wanna be as well known as Tommy Lee for HIS reasons!!
I know right?! He never gets the recognition he deserves.
Savatage! YES! So much of Criss Oliva's guitar work is great. Wish i saw more of it online. Nice picks over all!
YES! "Wasted" by Def Leppard - great tune! And Loudness too - outstanding!
I’ve enjoyed the first 2 volumes and am already looking ahead to the next volume
I love your mix of brother's cymbals. I use both also. Sabians Rock, and I love my Zildjians, too. Awesome sounds!!!
Lay It Down is to me one of the best, thanks from France for mentionning it 🤘😘
My favorite genre!🤘🤘. You can make one of these every week and I won't get bored!
The drums are executed excellently as well : )
Always loved the Crazy Nights riff by Loudness.
I’m waiting for part #3 now 😊
Loving these videos - the drums sound killer and the guitar tone is perfect! What are you using to record the guitars?
There ya go--Saigon Kick. Back in the 90s my friend turned me onto that. It was surprising how heavy it was. It was all because of Love Is on the Way I had dismissed them.
Love to see some Firehouse, Loudness and more Ratt in there, such great choices! Maybe some White Lion next?
You nailed it! Crazy Nights, Lay It Down and Wasted were the absolute best songs (& riffs) from these bands!
I always liked the main riff from Crazy Nights by Loudness
First of all, I wanna say you have an awesome guitar collection!
Secondly, awesome video, and Whitesnake go pretty hard too! \m/
Great tone, love the charvel
Ahhhh....the soundtrack to my teenage years, so many memories!
Love this series. You should check out Lillian Axe's first few albums.
A few more:
Europe - Scream of Anger
Scorpions - China White
Bon Jovi - Lay Your Hands On Me
Hardline - Dr. Love
Whitesnake - Crying In The Rain '87
Def Leppard - Lady Strange
Oh yeah, Europe has some scorchers!
Lady Strange is a underrated Def Leppard song
21 Guns - Nothing's Real
Velocity - You don't amaze me anymore
Hurricane - Temptation
Babylon A.D. - Hammer Swings Down
Saints & Sinners - Shake and Lesson Of Love
Bangalore Choir - Angel in Black, If they good die Young.
Saraya - When you see me again and Love Has Taken It's Toll
Razormaid - Sooner or Later
Lillian Axe - Show a little love
Keel - Somebody's Waiting
Beau Nasty - Shake It
@@rodolfomisao123 Bang Tango - Dancin' on Coals and/or Someone Like You
Happy to boast that I knew every single riff in both videos! 😎
Yes, I think this is pretty much the first time Savatage were labelled hair metal - admit it, you just wanted to get that riff in! 😂 So, first Savatage, now you can follow with Fates Warning, Vicious Rumors & Armored Saint - back in 1987 they probably all had the same hair dresser, too! If looks could kill, indeed! 😂
But seriously, as for heavy glammy riffage, I think these qualify as well, at least era-wise: Lady Of The Valley (White Lion), Love Ain't Easy (Steelheart), Arabia (Vengeance), Roses On White Lace (Alice Cooper), Scream Of Anger (Europe)...
Late to the party this week, but I have a touch of the Covid, so wasn't up to much music. I love most of these riffs, I was in my 20's during the hair metal daze, and every week it seemed like a better album was being released! Brings back great great memories, especially since I've seen almost every one of those bands live!
Your tones are very accurate... well done.
Glad to see Lay it Down in there this time. Love that riff.
Thanks for adding loudness!
Fuuuuuck yeah! These are my JAMS! So much nostalgia in one video! 🤘🏽
