Hi Sam, wow crazy fickle currents. Makes for a suspenseful video. Dramatic scenary. Great move to tuck close into the shoreline. Most Scottish cuisine is based on a dare. You're a natural for Scotland. I'm watching this video at my home in the British West country doing my 10 day mandatory quarantine after arriving from New Orleans on 29 Sep. It's nice to be home. Take care. Be safe. Paul.
Sam, I've followed your journey since Hawaii, and during that same time I myself have encountered rough seas! My marriage and health are almost in the rocks haha! But like you, I will persevere! I may not smile as often and my cynicism is the equivalent of your optimism. I will sail on, in hopes of fair seas, beautiful mermaids, and far away lands. Thanks for the laughs, courage, and positivity! -Baltazar
Next time you're in a Scottish grocers/supermarket, grab yourself some "Grant's tinned Haggis" for the yacht's pantry. It's honestly amazing!! Much better than the fried and battered stuff. I had to turn veggie years ago and it's the only meat product I truly miss. I know these videos are behind your travels but I'll be watching out for you in my local marina here on the East coast (Arbroath. Historically very important as it is Scotland's birthplace where the declaration of independence was signed at the ancient abbey). Hopefully you manage a visit to our interesting part of the world. Be lucky.
@@samholmessailing Yeah, the deep fried haggis isn't bad, but it can't beat the traditional Haggis, Neeps, and Tattis (with gravy poured over it). I had some in Edinburgh with a whisky gravy. Amazing.
As a Finn like myself, I can't get over how much haggis tastes like our "maksalaatikko" which is basically a casserole with rice, raisins and ground liver. Both are amazing even though the ingredients don't sound the most appealing.
Wow, great video, bro! The sailing there looks so cool, I wish my boat was already built and I could be there. But, hopefully I'll be sailing next year. Good winds to you.
The people in Islay are awesome! Very friendly and very well informed about what is going on in this world, even though there hardly is any reception. The people are just genuinely curious. Fun fact: they say nobody ever stayed more than 3 weeks without moving there :)
I once met a family from Scotland in Thailand. Couldn’t understand much of what they said except that it’s always windy and the rain comes sideways. Best beer I had in Thailand.
Ok... I just discovered Sam Holmes Sailing today (I'm off work with flu 🤧). I've binged from Bermuda to Scotland. Very impressed, I'm so glad RUclips threw this at me! Good for you Sam, I wish you happy sailing!
epic vid, very immersive with the sketchy currents and the hike to the high overlook; Scotland looks amazing. Sam, you are the Rick Steves of sailing to me and sure hope to see your adventures on PBS one day. Stay safe brother.
I’m just learning to sail in the Solent and as Sam has found out, its all about the tidal currents in the UK, you have to plan you passage accordingly.
Sailing around the Scottish coastline must be superb. They've of the most beautiful coastlines in the world...mull of kentyre.. Robert louis stevenson mentions the coastline in his book, kidnapped.. How fortunate you are are sam laddy.
Hey Sam, I don't know much about sailing, just a little. And i found your channel a month bk, and i am hooked. Your skill and level head as you do these trips just amazes me. You clearly have such a passion for life and the world its amazing to see and watch. And i'm thank full for all the effort you put into making these videos so we can in some way enjoy the ride with you. I am from the uk, England, Scotland is a beautiful place. Enjoy. And the people are always nice up north. I will donate as and when i can but i thank you, and good look on your journeys

I've been following your channel - nice to see where I'll be going next season. Just finished a four week passage in my 22ftr London to Anglesey. I was glad to be able to stop and do my videos, but now I'm hankering after some more sailing after watching you. I had to stopand haul out - too many things to fix, working on them now. Have a good trip - looking forward to seeing you cross over to Europe.
I've been following your channel since Chasing Currents recommended it - you sir, are an exceptional human being! I'll be joining the sailing community later this year, hopefully paths will cross! :D
I've recently found this channel and it's grown on me, but what always hooks me in with youtube travelogues is when the presenter gets away from his or her specific mode of travel thing (in your case, your sailboat) every now and again and sees the landscape/features (by foot/pushbike/whatever) - but more so by being a fish out of water and hanging out with the locals in the shop/pub/bar.
Great videos Sam, just one point of order... "Whiskey" is the Irish and US spelling... the Scots drop the "e" and are quite vocal and militant about their spelling of Whisky. Just so ya don't annoy the locals too much pal.😉
Sam, I think your bike handlebar grips are supposed to be rotated 180 degrees. Might be a more comfortable ride. Also try scrapple if you sail up the Delaware Bay.
God where is my boat?? I just don’t have patience I don’t do waiting well. It’s only six months until I get my boat. I will enjoy following Sam in this part of the world! God bless you Sam, good sailing ⛵️, good wind 💨!
Welcome to Scotland Sam, hope you've been made as welcome here as I have in the US over many years of visiting. I sailed into Port Ellen with a pal back in August. We had glorious weather, but the same problem with the tides as you (though we were trying to go west to get round outside of Islay and up to Mull). Thought we'd timed it right, but couldn't get enough wind or a decent angle and by the time we tried all we could in that regard, the tide was starting to move against us. We gave up and went north east to Gigha, which is also beautiful.
A good video! I like the sightseeing too... the old rock walls next to the road, the watchtower, the distilleries, the Haggis (I'd never seen it before) and the view from the cliffs. It's all good!!
Wow. I follow your videos fairly sporadically - every few weeks or so (always enjoy them). Last one I watched you were on your way to Ireland and what a surprise to find you anchored in Port Ellen in this episode ..where I live! If only I’d have known! Would have had you round for a ‘dram’. Love your videos and glad you made it up to America’s monument (not the lighthouse!) - hope you read the story as to why it’s there. Love your videos and hope you enjoyed Islay and Scotland. A beautiful sail as you make your way north - look forward to the next video. Slàinte Mhath

WAY behind videos due to massive amounts of work. Playing some catch up now. Promised myself I’d pour a glass of every distillery you visited. I know you visited laphroaig & lagavulin. Did you visit Ardbeg as well? Out of luck if you dropped by port Ellen distillery as I am not sure they will be releasing anything until sometime around 2030 as they only reopened in 2020.
Another Interesting video. I can see islay coast line clearly from the Antrim coast at white park bay. But when I am on a hill near where I live thirty five miles inland at an elevation of 1500 feet. On a very clear day. I can see the span of water between islay and Ireland and most of its elevated land mass behind. It’s interesting you can see less of islay when you only 20 miles from it at sea level . Yet when you are fifty miles from islay at high elevation you can see much more of the islands land mass.
You are welcome to Norway. Looking forward to following you further. There are many nice places to sail to in Norway, but the wrong season. Short days and a lot of bad weather. What are your plans for the Winter?
13:40 - OMG - Someone is on your boat! Turn around - they are stealing your paper towels!!...lol....
Drinking whiskey, riding a bicycle, and eating "Haggis." What a way to make memories. Amazing.
