- Never buy Yogurt again!! It is one of the easiest hands off recipe you can make with only 4L of whole milk you can have an entire crock pot full of yogurt!
The steps are simple:
- Add milk to the crock pot and turn on low for a few hours to scald the milk to 180F.
- Unplug it and let the temp come down SLOWLY to 115-120F.
- Whisk in 1 cup of full fat plain yogurt (the kind with only a few ingredients in it).
- Cover with towels (to keep the heat in ) and leave it overnight or for around 12 hours. Then its yogurt!!
- Watch the video to learn how I make it into greek yogurt, and even cream cheese boursin style. Plus I show what I use to flavour our yogurt with freeze dried powders and natural sweeteners.
- We use this for all our yogurt, greek yogurt, dips and spreads, and sour cream!

Thank you so much for this recipe and with Canadian ingredients ! I live in rural Nova Scotia and sometimes it's tricky getting certain items. This is incredible!
Thank You for wisking in that film on milk.
Thank you Ash! Such a great detailed video! Can't wait to try making my own yogurt!
Thank u for a good and easy recipe for
Great video! I've tried several homemade yogurt methods but don't feel like I've quite found the right/most sustainable method for me over the long run. Can't wait to give this a try! Also love the fruit powder idea!
I’m baking bread and Dutch babies while watching. Thank you 😊
thanks for watching!
Incredible video, your a true God send💕🌸🇦🇺💕
Seems the KEY to fermentation (wine, sourdough starter, yogurt, etc.,) is TEMPERATURE. 🤔
My wine failed because I did not maintain a warm enough temperature during the fermentation phase. 🤨 My sourdough starter did not ferment until I kept it in a warm place, and yogurt is also dependent on temperature maintenance at certain phases of production... 🤔
I live on a mountain and keep the thermostat at 64° which is apparently too cold for yeasts in the aforementioned cultures... Lol.
I've subscribed! Adding you to my collection of homesteading farm mamas pursuing a Renaissance in homemaking for family and farm care. Can't wait to make the breads and yogurt! Cheers from northern Nevada.
The recipe looks great, I love homemade yogurt. Here is a note about the crock pot. My instructions for the same pot say not to clamp down the lid. The clamp is used for transportation purposes.
i have never had a single issue with that! :)

The cheesecloth is called Plyban party🎉
so nice and thick. I usually get quite a bit of whey. I see you don't get any. I also strain to make Greek yogurt.
This recipe worked out perfectly for me (thank you!), we have similar preferences and will want to be straining moving forward. Would you be able to share where you sourced your silicone cheesecloth?
It was a part of a cheese making kit i got years ago. i dont remember the source unfortunately
3 questions:
1) How long does the yogurt keep in the fridge?
2) How long can the starter stay in the fridge?
3) Can you freeze the yogurt and/or starter?
We’re empty nesters and won’t go through this very fast.
Yes you can freeze your start. I don't know how the yogurt will be if you freeze it. Try it and see? I would recommend making a smaller batch in the first place. 😊 As for how long it will last? I keep mine 10 days to 2 weeks in the fridge. We just smell it and taste it if it has been longer and don't eat it if it isn't good beyond that time. 😊
Wondering if you can half this recipe? My crockpot is slightly smaller. Thanks!
Great video! Any ideas for using the whey? I always hate throwing it away.
sourdough!
@@turnerfarmcan you elaborate on how to add whey to my sourdough?
Use the whey as liquid in any recipe, soups, etc.. It is supposed to be a really good probiotic, very good for you. I have been making my own yogurt for probably 40 years. I also make my own cream cheese and cottage cheese, both very easy to do with store bought milk as I am unable to buy raw milk.
Any ideas on how to use the whey?
Thank you!
Use it as liquid in bread...on the farm fed it to chickens lots of protein in it
Do you turn the crockpot on low or high initially? What ten does it need to cool to b4 you add yogurt?
I haven't made yogurt in a crackpot, rather the instant pot. After getting the milk to 180°F, you lower it to 110°F and then temper your yogurt start in 1/2 cup of the 110° milk. Then stir it into the main amount. And then hold at that temp (I believe) during the fermentation process. 😊
low. it explains it all in the video :)
What do you do with the whey that was extracted from the yogurt?
i make sourdough with it or feed it to the dogs !
I bought the yogurt to do this but it says whole milk, bacterial culture and pectin. Will the pectin get in the way ??
i try to avoid pectin. but its worth trying!
