  • “Does a Massey Harris 44 operate well on a hay baler?!?!”
Judge by yourself in the video!
The main peculiarity to observe here is that the Massey Harris 44 is NOT equipped with a continuous pto which would allow Mr. Michaud to modulate his tractor speed without causing his hay baler to stop.
However, the tractor is equipped with a rather unusual option: A second clutch, operated by a long lever on the arm, allows the right wheel (!!) to be disengaged from the differential. By activating this lever, the wheels therefore stop moving forward while the hay baler continues to turn.
Note that pressing this lever does not allow to change gears.
    Music: Adéodat Michaud
    Farmer: Réjean Michaud

We used to pull a Oliver 60 baler with our 44. We didn't have a hand clutch but our baler had the Wisconsin engine on it.

Was nice to see a Massey Harris 44 baling hay with a 520 Oliver baler. I had only wished the video didn't have a music track added so that I could hear the tractor and baler in it's pure form. Video needed to be a little longer, but I still enjoyed it!
